This article describes new polar angle-dependent magnetoresistance (ADMR) measurements in the overdoped cuprate Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ over an expanded range of temperatures and azimuthal angles. These detailed measurements re-affirm the analysis of earlier data taken over a more restricted temperature range and at a single azimuthal orientation, in particular the delineation of the intraplane scattering rate into isotropic and anisotropic components. These new measurements also reveal additional features in the temperature and momentum dependence of the scattering rate, including anisotropy in the $T^2$ component and the preservation of both the $T$-linear and $T^2$ components up to 100 K. The resultant form of the scattering rate places firm constraints on the development of any forthcoming theoretical framework for the normal state charge response of high temperature superconducting cuprates.

Abstract:
We report a detailed magnetotransport study of the highly anisotropic quasi-one-dimensional oxide Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$ whose in-chain electrical resistivity diverges below a temperature $T_{\rm min} \sim$ 25 K. For $T < T_{\rm min}$, a magnetic field applied parallel to the conducting chain induces a large negative magnetoresistance and ultimately, the recovery of a metallic state. We show e…

We show evidence that this insulator/metal crossover is a consequence of field-induced suppression of a density-wave gap in a highly one-dimensional conductor. At the highest fields studied, there is evidence for the possible emergence of a novel superconducting state with an onset temperature $T_c >$ 10 K.

We present a realisation of high bandwidth instrumentation at cryogenic temperatures and for dilution refrigerator operation that possesses advantages over methods using radio-frequency single electron transistor or transimpedance amplifiers. The ability for the low temperature electronics to carry out faster measurements than with room temperature electronics is investigated by the use of a phosphorous-doped single-electron transistor. A single-shot technique is successfully implemented and used to observe the real time decay of a quantum state. A discussion on various measurement strategies is presented and the consequences on electron heating and noise are analysed.

We have fabricated a custom cryogenic Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) integrated circuit that has a higher measurement bandwidth compared with conventional room temperature electronics. This allowed implementing single shot operations and observe the real-time evolution of the current of a phosphorous-doped silicon single electron transistor that was irradiated with a microwave pulse. Relaxation times up to 90 us are observed, suggesting the presence of well isolated electron excitations within the device. It is expected that these are associated with long decoherence time and the device may be suitable for quantum information processing.

Comparison with results from angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy indicates that the transport and quasiparticle lifetimes are distinct.

The angle-dependent interlayer magnetoresistance of overdoped Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ has been measured in high magnetic fields up to 45 Tesla. A conventional Boltzmann transport analysis with no basal-plane anisotropy in the cyclotron frequency $ω_c$ or transport lifetime $τ$ is shown to be inadequate for explaining the data. A conventional Boltzmann transport analysis with no basal-plane anisotropy in the cyclotron frequency $ω_c$ or transport lifetime $τ$ is shown to be inadequate for explaining the data. We describe in detail how the analysis can be modified to incorporate in-plane anisotropy in these two key quantities and extract the degree of anisotropy for each by assuming a simple four-fold symmetry. While anisotropy in $ω_c$ and other Fermi surface parameters may improve the fit, we demonstrate that the most important anisotropy is that in the transport lifetime, thus confirming its role in the physics of overdoped superconducting cuprates.

Magnetotransport measurements on the overdoped cuprate La_{1.7}Sr_{0.3}CuO_4 are fitted using the Ong construction and band parameters inferred from angle-resolved photoemission. Within a band picture, the low temperature Hall data can only be fitted satisfactorily by invoking strong basal-plane anisotropy in the mean-free-path $\ell$. This violation of the isotropic-$\ell$ approximation supports a picture of dominant small-angle elastic scattering in cuprates due to out-of-plane substitutional disorder. We show that both band anisotropy and anisotropy in the elastic scattering channel strongly renormalize the Hall coefficient in overdoped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 over a wide doping and temperature range.
