We theoretically investigate strong-coupling properties of an odd-frequency Fermi superfluid. This pairing state has the unique property that Cooper pairs are formed between fermions, not at the same time, but at different times. To see whether or not such unequal-time pairs still exhibit bosonic behavior, we examine the space-time structure of the odd-frequency Cooper-pair wavefunction at $T=0$, by employing the combined path-integral formalism with the BCS-Eagles-Leggett-type superfluid theory. In the strong-coupling regime, the odd-frequency pair wavefunction still has different space-time structure from that in the ordinary even-frequency $s$-wave superfluid state, their $\textit{magnitudes}$ are found to become close to each other, except for the equal-time pairing component. In this regime, we also evaluate the superfluid phase transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ within the framework of the strong-coupling theory developed by Nozières and Schmitt-Rink. The calculated $T_{\rm c}$ in the strong-coupling regime of the odd-frequency system is found to be well described by the Bose-Einstein condensation of tightly bound Bose molecules. Our results indicates that, in spite of vanishing equal-time pairing, odd-frequency Cooper pairs still behave like bosons in the strong-coupling regime, as in the even-frequency $s$-wave superfluid case.

We performed a chirality-controlled crystal growth of transition metal disilicide NbSi$_{2}$ and TaSi$_{2}$ by using a laser-diode-heated floating zone (LDFZ) method. The crystal chirality was evaluated in the crystals of centimeters in length by performing single crystal X-ray diffraction as well as probing a spin polarization originating from chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. The crystals of right-handed NbSi$_{2}$ and of left-handed TaSi$_{2}$ were obtained in the conventional LDFZ crystal growth, while the left-handed NbSi$_{2}$ and right-handed TaSi$_{2}$ crystals were grown by the LDFZ method with the composition-gradient feed rods. The spin polarization via the CISS was observed over centimeters in the NbSi$_{2}$ single crystals and the sign of the CISS signals was dependent on the chirality of crystals. The correlation between the crystal chirality and CISS signals indicates that the CISS measurements work as a non-destructive method for chirality determination even in centimeter-long specimens.

A synthesis of single crystals of chiral dichalcogenides $TM_{3}X_{6}$ ($T$: 3$d$ transition metal, $M$: Nb or Ta, $X$: S or Se) remains an intriguing issue for the investigation of emergent quantum properties such as chiral helimagnetism. In this study, we investigated a correlation between the quantity of Cr intercalation $x$ and magnetic property in single crystals of a chromium (Cr) intercalated chiral disulfide Cr$_x$Nb$_3$S$_6$ in order to optimize the synthesis condition for the intercalation-controlled single crystals. The magnetic properties including a magnetic transition temperature $T_{c}$ take different values depending on the samples. We systematically grew single crystals of Cr$_{x}$Nb$_{3}$S$_{6}$ with $x$ ranged from 0.89 to 1.03 and found that the amount of the Cr intercalation $x$ is an essential factor in controlling the magnetic properties of the grown crystals. The magnetization anomaly, which appears in the temperature dependence as evidence of the formation of chiral magnetic soliton lattice (CSL), was observed only in a narrow region of $x$ from 0.98 to 1.03. The single crystals with $x$ being 0.98 and 0.99 showed the CSL behavior with the highest $T_{c}$ of 133 K. These results indicate that small amount of defects on the sites for $T$ ions dramatically affects the quality of the single crystals in the synthesis of $TM_{3}$S$_{6}$. We also discuss an importance of synthesizing enantiopure single crystals of chiral dichalgogenides in order to observe chiral physical properties unique to chiral compounds such as magneto-chiral effect and chiral-induced spin selectivity.

We performed a crystal growth to obtain chirality-controlled enantiopure crystals using a laser-diode-heated floating zone (LDFZ) method with a composition-gradient feed rod. It has been argued that the crystal handedness of $T$Si ($T$ : transition metal) is fixed depending on $T$ in the case of the ones grown by the conventional methods. We found that right-handed single crystals of CoSi and MnSi were grown from the composition gradient feed rods that consist of FeSi--CoSi and FeSi--MnSi, respectively. The obtained CoSi and MnSi crystals inherit the chirality from the seed part of FeSi, which grows in a right-handed structure, and thus have the chirality opposite to that for the crystals in the literature. The LDFZ method with the feed rods with various combinations of $T$Si compounds enables a flexible control of the chirality of $T$Si and will be useful for clarifying the interplay between the crystalline chirality and chirality-induced physical responses.

Chirality is a manifestation of the asymmetry inherent in nature. It has been defined as the symmetry breaking of the parity of static objects, and the definition was extended to dynamic motion such that true and false chiralities were distinguished. Recently, rotating, yet not propagating, atomic motions were predicted and observed in two-dimensional materials, and they were referred to as "chiral phonons" . A natural development would be the discovery of truly chiral phonons that propagate while rotating in three-dimensional materials. Here, we used circularly polarised Raman scattering and first-principles calculations to identify truly chiral phonons in chiral bulk crystals. This approach enabled us to determine the chirality of a crystal in a non-contact and non-destructive manner. In addition, we demonstrated that the law of the conservation of pseudo-angular momentum holds between circularly polarised photons and chiral phonons. These findings are expected to help develop ways for transferring the pseudo-angular momentum from photons to electron spins via the propagating chiral phonons in opto-phononic-spintronic devices.

A growing number of papers are published in the area of superconducting materials science. However, novel text and data mining (TDM) processes are still needed to efficiently access and exploit this accumulated knowledge, paving the way towards data-driven materials design. Herein, we present SuperMat (Superconductor Materials), an annotated corpus of linked data derived from scientific publications on superconductors, which comprises 142 articles, 16052 entities, and 1398 links that are characterised into six categories: the names, classes, and properties of materials; links to their respective superconducting critical temperature (Tc); and parametric conditions such as applied pressure or measurement methods. The construction of SuperMat resulted from a fruitful collaboration between computer scientists and material scientists, and its high quality is ensured through validation by domain experts. The quality of the annotation guidelines was ensured by satisfactory Inter Annotator Agreement (IAA) between the annotators and the domain experts. SuperMat includes the dataset, annotation guidelines, and annotation support tools that use automatic suggestions to help minimise human errors.

We found out that Gd enters stoichiometrically and randomly into the Ho site, leading to a Vegard-type structural change. The addition of spherical S$^{7/2}$ Gd$^{3+}$ moments prompts an enhancement in Curie temperature, a reduction in peak value of the magnetic entropy change while still being relatively high, and a broadening of the magnetic entropy change curves. The overall influence is a relatively high refrigerant capacity and relative cooling power, and an extension of the thermal working range to higher temperatures; thus, electing Ho$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$B$_{2}$(as potential candidates for cryogenic refrigeration applications.

Here we investigate the effects of Dy substitution in the magnetocaloric properties of Ho$_{1-x}$Dy$_{x}$B$_{2}$ alloys ($\textit{x}$ = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0). We find that the Curie temperature ($\textit{T}$$_{C}$) gradually increases upon Dy substitution, while the magnitude of the magnetic entropy change |$Δ\textit{S}_{M}$| at $\textit{T}$ = $\textit{T}_{C}$ decreases from 0.35 to 0.15 J cm$^{-3}$ K$^{-1}$ for a field change of 5 T. Due to the presence of two magnetic transitions in these alloys, despite the change in the peak magnitude of |$Δ\textit{S}_{M}$|, the refrigerant capacity ($\textit{RC}$) and refrigerant cooling power ($\textit{RCP}$) remains almost constant in all doping range, which as large as 5.5 J cm$^{-3}$ and 7.0 J cm$^{-3}$ for a field change of 5 T. These results imply that this series of alloys could be an exciting candidate for magnetic refrigeration in the temperature range between 10-50 K.

Magnetic refrigeration exploits the magnetocaloric effect which is the entropy change upon application and removal of magnetic fields in materials, providing an alternate path for refrigeration other than the conventional gas cycles. While intensive research has uncovered a vast number of magnetic materials which exhibits large magnetocaloric effect, these properties for a large number of compounds still remain unknown. To explore new functional materials in this unknown space, machine learning is used as a guide for selecting materials which could exhibit large magnetocaloric effect. By this approach, HoB$_{2}$ is singled out, synthesized and its magnetocaloric properties are evaluated, leading to the experimental discovery of gigantic magnetic entropy change 40.1 J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ (0.35 J cm$^{-3}$ K$^{-1}$) for a field change of 5 T in the vicinity of a ferromagnetic second-order phase transition with a Curie temperature of 15 K. This is the highest value reported so far, to our knowledge, near the hydrogen liquefaction temperature thus it is a highly suitable material for hydrogen liquefaction and low temperature magnetic cooling applications.

The x-ray absorption spectra at the Fe L edges for BaFe$_2X_3$ exhibit two components, indicating that itinerant and localized Fe 3$d$ sites coexist. Substantial x-ray linear dichroism (XLD) is observed in polarization dependent spectra, indicating the existence of orbital order or fluctuation in the Fe-ladder even above the Néel temperature $T_N$. Direct exchange interaction along the legs of the Fe-ladder stabilizes the orbital and antiferromagnetic orders in BaFe$_2$S$_3$, while the ferromagnetic molecular orbitals are realized between the rungs in CsFe$_2$Se$_3$.

We study the conductance of phase-coherent disordered quantum wires focusing on the case in which the number of conducting channels is imbalanced between two propagating directions. If the number of channels in one direction is by one greater than that in the opposite direction, one perfectly conducting channel without backscattering is stabilized regardless of wire length. Consequently, the dimensionless conductance does not vanish but converges to unity in the long-wire limit, indicating the absence of Anderson localization. To observe the influence of a perfectly conducting channel, we numerically obtain the distribution of conductance in both cases with and without a perfectly conducting channel. We show that the characteristic form of the distribution is notably modified in the presence of a perfectly conducting channel.

Environmental dielectric screening effects on exciton transition energies in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been studied quantitatively in the range of dielectric constants from 1.0 to 37 by immersing SWNTs bridged over trenches in various organic solvents by means of photoluminescence and the excitation spectroscopies. With increasing environmental dielectric constant ($ε_{\rm env}$), both $E_{11}$ and $E_{22}$ exhibited a redshift by several tens meV and a tendency to saturate at a $ε_{\rm env} \sim 5$ without an indication of significant ($n$,$m$) dependence. The redshifts can be explained by dielectric screening of the repulsive electron-electron interaction. The $ε_{\rm env}$ dependence of $E_{11}$ and $E_{22}$ can be expressed by a simple empirical equation with a power law in $ε_{\rm env}$, $E_{\rm ii} = E_{\rm ii}^{\infty} + Aε_{\rm env}^{-α}$. We also immersed a sample in sodium-dodecyl-sulfate (SDS) solution to investigate the effects of wrapping SWNTs with surfactant. The resultant $E_{11}$ and $E_{22}$, which agree well with Weisman's data [Nano Lett. {\bf 3}, 1235 (2003)], are close to those of $ε_{\rm env}$ of 2. However, in addition to the shift due to dielectric screening, another shift was observed so that the ($2n+m$)-family patterns spread more widely, similar to that of the uniaxial-stress-induced shift.
