The superconductor Nb$_3$Sn has a high critical temperature and high critical field, widely used for high-field superconducting magnets. The high-quality Nb$_3$Sn powder sample was studied in both 3.2T and 7T magnetic fields in the temperature range from 1.5K to 300K. From measurement of the spectrum and its theoretical analysis, we find evidence for anisotropy despite its cubic crystal structure. This anisotropy is manifest in alignment of powder grains under certain temperature and field cycling conditions. The Knight shift and spin-lattice relaxation rate, $T_1^{-1}$, were measured in the normal state. Additionally, $T_1^{-1}$ was measured in the superconducting state and compared with BCS theory revealing a weak field dependence, with an energy gap $Δ(0)=2.0\pm0.08k_B T_c$ at 3.2T and $Δ(0)=1.73\pm0.08k_B T_c$ at 7T, indicating suppression of the order parameter by magnetic field.

Bi-2212 is the only high-field, high-temperature superconductor (HTS) capable of reaching a critical current density $J_{\text{c}}$(16 T, 4.2 K) of 6500 $\mathrm{A\cdot mm^{-2}}$ in the highly desirable round wire (RW) form. However, state-of-the-art Bi-2212 conductors still have a critical current density ($J_{\text{c}}$) to depairing current density ($J_{\text{d}}$) ratio around 20 to 30 times lower than that of state-of-the-art $\mathrm{Nb-Ti}$ or REBCO. Previously, we have shown that recent improvements in Bi-2212 RW $J_{\text{c}}$ are due to improved connectivity associated with optimization of the heat treatment process, and most recently due to a transition to a finer and more uniform powder manufactured by Engi-Mat. One quantitative measure of connectivity may be the critical current ($I_{\text{c}}$) distribution, since the local $I_{\text{c}}$ in a wire can vary along the length due to variable vortex-microstructure interactions and to factors such as filament shape variations, grain-to-grain connectivity variations and blocking secondary phase distributions. Here we compare $\sim$ 0.1 m length $I_{\text{c}}$ distributions of Bi-2212 RWs with recent state-of-the-art very high-$J_{\text{c}}$ Engi-Mat powder and lower $J_{\text{c}}$ and older Nexans granulate powder. We do find that the $I_{\text{c}}$ spread for Bi-2212 wires is about twice the relative standard of high-$J_{\text{c}}$ $\mathrm{Nb-Ti}$ well below $H_{\text{irr}}$. We do not yet see any obvious contribution of the Bi-2212 anisotropy to the $I_{\text{c}}$ distribution and are rather encouraged that these Bi-2212 round wires show relative $I_{\text{c}}$ distributions not too far from high-$J_{\text{c}}$ $\mathrm{Nb-Ti}$ wires.

Understanding what makes Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_1$Cu$_2$O$_x$ (Bi-2212) the only high critical current density ($J_c$), high temperature superconductor (HTS) capable of being made as a round wire (RW) is important intellectually because high $J_c$ RW Bi-2212 breaks the paradigm that forces biaxially textured REBCO and uniaxially textured (Bi,Pb)$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_x$ (Bi-2223) into tape geometries that reproduce the strong anisotropy of the native crystal structure and force expensive fabrication routes to ensure the best possible texture with minimum density of high angle grain boundaries. The biaxial growth texture of Bi-2212 developed during a partial melt heat treatment should favor high $J_c$, even though its $\sim$15$^{\circ}$ full width at half maximum (FWHM) grain-to-grain misorientation is well beyond the commonly accepted strong-coupling range. Its ability to be strongly overdoped should be valuable too, since underdoped cuprate grain boundaries are widely believed to be weakly linked. Accordingly, we here study property changes after oxygen underdoping the optimized, overdoped wire. While $J_c$ and vortex pinning diminish significantly in underdoped wires, we were not able to develop the prominent weak-link signature (a hysteretic $J_c$(H) characteristic) evident in even the very best Bi-2223 tapes with a $\sim$ 15$^{\circ}$ FWHM uniaxial texture. We attribute the high $J_c$ and lack of weak link signature in our Bi-2212 round wires to the high-aspect ratio, large-grain, basal-plane-faced grain morphology produced by partial-melt processing of Bi-2212 which enables $c$-axis Brick-Wall current flow when $ab$-plane transport is blocked. We conclude that the presently optimized biaxial texture of Bi-2212 intrinsically constitutes a strongly coupled current path, regardless of its oxygen doping state.

The increasing demand for improving the high-field (16-22 T) performance of Nb$_3$Sn conductors requires a better understanding of the properties of modern wires much closer to irreversibility field, H$_{Irr}$. In this study we investigated the impact of Ta, Ti and Hf doping on the high-field pinning properties, the upper critical field, H$_{c2}$, and H$_{Irr}$. We found that the pinning force curves of commercial Ti and Ta doped wires at different temperatures do not scale and that the Kramer extrapolation, typically used by magnet designers to estimate high-field critical current density and magnet operational margins from lower field data, is not reliable and significantly overestimates the actual H$_{Irr}$. In contrast, new laboratory scale conductors made with Nb-Ta-Hf alloy have improved high-field J$_c$ performance and, despite contributions by both grain boundary and point defect pinning mechanisms, have more predictable high-field behavior. Using Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure spectroscopy, EXAFS, we found that for the commercial Ta and Ti doped conductors, the Ta site occupancy in the A15 structure gradually changes with the heat treatment temperature whereas Ti is always located on the Nb site with clear consequences for H$_{c2}$. This work reveals the still limited understanding of what determines H$_{c2}$, H$_{Irr}$ and the high-field J$_c$ performance of Nb$_3$Sn and the complexity of optimizing these conductors so that they can reach their full potential for high-field applications.

Here we show that addition of Hf to Nb4Ta can significantly improve the high field performance of Nb$_{3}$Sn, making it suitable for dipole magnets for Future Circular Collider (FCC). A big challenge for the FCC is that a realistic production target for FCC Nb3Sn requires ~30% improvement over current conductor performance. Recent success with internal oxidation(IO) of Nb-Zr precursor has shown significant improvement in the layer J$_{c}$ of Nb$_{3}$Sn wires, albeit the complication of providing an internal O$_{2}$ diffusion path and avoiding degradation of irreversibility field($_{irr}$). We compare Zr and Hf additions to the standard Nb4Ta alloy of maximum H$_{c2}$ and H$_{irr}$. Nb4Ta rods with 1Zr or 1Hf were made into monofilament wires with and without SnO$_{2}$ and their properties measured over the entire superconducting range up to 31 T. We found that group IV alloying of Nb4Ta raises H$_{irr}$, though adding O$_{2}$ still degrades this slightly. As noted in Nb1Zr studies, the pinning force density F$_{p}$ is strongly enhanced and its peak value shifted to higher field by IO. A surprising result of this work is that we found better properties in Nb4Ta1Hf without SnO$_{2}$, F$_{pmax}$ achieving 2.35 times that of the standard Nb4Ta alloy, while the oxidized Nb4Ta1Zr alloy achieved 1.54 times that of the Nb4Ta alloy. The highest layer J$_{c}$ (16 T, 4.2 K) of 3700 A/mm$^{2}$ was found in the SnO$_{2}$-free wire made with Nb4Ta1Hf alloy. Using a standard A15 cross-section fraction of 60% for modern PIT and RRP wires, we estimated that a non-Cu J$_{c}$ of 2200 A/mm$^{2}$ is obtainable in modern conductors, well above the 1500A/mm$^{2}$ FCC specification. Moreover, the best properties were obtained without SnO$_{2}$, the Nb4Ta1Hf alloy appears to open a straightforward route to enhanced properties in Nb$_{3}$Sn wires.

To meet critical current density, J$_c$, targets for the Future Circular Collider (FCC), the planned replacement for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the high field performance of Nb$_3$Sn must be improved, but champion J$_c$ values have remained static for the last 10 years. Making the A15 phase stoichiometric and enhancing the upper critical field H$_{c2}$ by Ti or Ta dopants are the standard strategies for enhancing high field performance but detailed recent studies show that even the best modern wires have broad composition ranges. To assess whether further improvement might be possible, we employed EXAFS to determine the lattice site location of dopants in modern high-performance Nb$_3$Sn strands with J$_c$ values amongst the best so far achieved. Although Ti and Ta primarily occupy the Nb sites in the A15 structure, we also find significant Ta occupancy on the Sn site. These findings indicate that the best performing Ti-doped stand is strongly sub-stoichiometric in Sn and that antisite disorder likely explains its high average H$_{c2}$ behavior. These new results suggest an important role for dopant and antisite disorder in minimizing superconducting property distributions and maximizing high field J$_c$ properties.

The effect of $α$-particle irradiation on a NdFeAs(O,F) thin film has been investigated to determine how the introduction of defects affects basic superconducting properties, including the critical temperature $T_c$ and the upper critical field $H_{c2}$, and properties more of interest for applications, like the critical current density $J_c$ and the related pinning landscape. The irradiation-induced suppression of the film $T_c$ is significantly smaller than on a similarly damaged single crystal. Moreover $H_{c2}$ behaves differently, depending on the field orientation: for H//c the $H_{c2}$ slope monotonically increases with increasing disorder, whereas for H//ab it remains constant at low dose and it increases only when the sample is highly disordered. This suggests that a much higher damage level is necessary to drive the NdFeAs(O,F) thin film into the dirty limit. Despite the increase in the low temperature $H_{c2}$, the effects on the $J_c$(H//c) performances are moderate in the measured temperature and field ranges, with a shifting of the pinning force maximum from 4.5 T to 6 T after an irradiation of $2\times10^{15} cm^{-2}$. On the contrary, $J_c$(H//ab) is always suppressed. The analysis demonstrates that irradiation does introduce point defects acting as pinning centres proportionally to the irradiation fluence but also suppresses the effectiveness of c-axis correlated pinning present in the pristine sample. We estimate that significant performance improvements may be possible at high field or at temperatures below 10 K. The suppression of the $J_c$(H//ab) performance is not related to a decrease of the $J_c$ anisotropy as found in other superconductors. Instead it is due to the presence of point defects that decrease the efficiency of the ab-plane intrinsic pinning typical of materials with a layered structure.

The Fe-based superconductors (FBS) present a large variety of compounds whose properties are affected to different extents by their crystal structures. Amongst them, the $\it{RE}$FeAs(O,F) ($\it{RE}$1111, where $\it{RE}$ is a rare earth element) is the family with the highest critical temperature $T_c$ but also with a large anisotropy and Josephson vortices as demonstrated in the flux-flow regime in Sm1111 ($T_c$ $\sim$ 55 K). Here we focus our attention on the pinning properties of the lower-$T_c$ Nd1111 in the flux-creep regime. We demonstrate that for H//c critical current density $J_c$ at high temperatures is dominated by point-defect pinning centres, whereas at low temperatures surface pinning by planar defects parallel to the $\it{c}$-axis and vortex shearing prevail. When the field approaches the $\it{ab}$-planes, two different regimes are observed at low temperatures as a consequence of the transition between 3D-Abrikosov and 2D-Josephson vortices: one is determined by the formation of a vortex staircase structure and one by lock-in of the vortices parallel to the layers. This is the first study on FBS showing this behaviour in a full temperature, field, and angular range and it demonstrates that, despite the lower $T_c$ and anisotropy of Nd1111 with respect to Sm1111, this compound is substantially affected by intrinsic pinning generating a strong $\it{ab}$-peak in $J_c$.

Nb3Sn wires are now very close to their final optimization but despite its classical nature, detailed understanding of the role of Ta and Ti doping in the A15 is not fully understood. Long thought to be essentially equivalent in their influence on Hc2, they were interchangeably applied. Here we show that Ti produces significantly more homogeneous chemical and superconducting properties. Despite Ta-doped samples having a slightly higher Tc onset in zero-field, they always have a wider Tc-distribution. In particular, whereas the Ta-doped A15 has a Tc-distribution extending from 18 down to 5-6 K (the lowest expected Tc for the binary A15 phase), the Ti-doped samples have no A15 phase with Tc below 12 K. The much narrower Tc distribution in the Ti-doped samples has a positive effect on their in-field Tc-distribution too, leading to an extrapolated Hc2(0) 2 Tesla larger than the Ta-doped one. Ti-doping also appears to be very homogeneous even when the Sn content is reduced in order to inhibit breakdown of the diffusion barriers in very high Jc conductors. The enhanced homogeneity of the Ti-doped samples appears to result from its assistance of rapid diffusion of Sn into the filaments and by its incorporation into the A15 phase interchangeably with Sn on the Sn sites of the A15 phase.

A high Vickers hardness of ~3.5 GPa and a reasonable fracture toughness of ~2.35 MPa m0.5 were measured. Given the untextured polycrystalline nature of the cylinders and their large irreversibility field (> 90 T), it is expected that larger bulks could trap fields in excess of 10 T.

Moreover, FBS are very sensitive to strain, which induces an important enhancement in critical temperature, Tc, of the material. In this paper we demonstrate that strain induced by the substrate can further improve Jc of both single and multilayer films by more than that expected simply due to the increase in Tc. The multilayer deposition of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 on CaF2 increases the pinning force density Fp by more than 60% compared to a single layer film, reaching a maximum of 84 GN/m^3 at 22.5T and 4.2 K, the highest value ever reported in any 122 phase.

Why Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox (Bi2212) allows high critical current density Jc in round wires rather than only in the anisotropic tape form demanded by all other high temperature superconductors is important for future magnet applications. Here we compare the local texture of state-of-the-art Bi2212 and Bi2223 ((Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10), finding that round wire Bi2212 generates a dominant a-axis growth texture that also enforces a local biaxial texture (FWHM <15°) while simultaneously allowing the c-axes of its polycrystals to rotate azimuthally along and about the filament axis so as to generate macroscopically isotropic behavior. By contrast Bi2223 shows only a uniaxial (FWHM <15°) c-axis texture perpendicular to the tape plane without any in-plane texture. Consistent with these observations, a marked, field-increasing, field-decreasing Jc(H) hysteresis characteristic of weak-linked systems appears in Bi2223 but is absent in Bi2212 round wire. Growth-induced texture on cooling from the melt step of the Bi2212 Jc optimization process appears to be the key step in generating this highly desirable microstructure.

In modern Nb3Sn wires there is a fundamental compromise to be made between optimizing the intrinsic properties associated with the superfluid density in the A15 phase (e.g. Tc, Hc, Hc2, all of which are composition dependent), maximizing the quantity of A15 that can be formed from a given mixture of Nb, Sn and Cu, minimizing the A15 composition gradients within each sub-element, while at the same time generating a high vortex pinning critical current density, Jc, by maximizing the grain boundary density with the additional constraint of maintaining the RRR of the Cu stabilizer above 100. Here we study these factors in a Ta-alloyed Restacked-Rod-Process (RRP) wire with ~70 microns diameter sub-elements. Consistent with many earlier studies, maximum non-Cu Jc(12T,4.2K) requires preventing A15 grain growth, rather than by optimizing the superfluid density. In wires optimized for 12T, 4.2K performance, about 60% of the non-Cu cross-section is A15, 35% residual Cu and Sn core, and only 5% a residual Nb7.5wt.%Ta diffusion barrier. The specific heat and chemical analyses show that in this 60% A15 fraction there is a wide range of Tc and chemical composition that does diminish for higher heat treatment temperatures, which, however, are impractical because of the strong RRR degradation that occurs when only about 2% of the A15 reaction front breaches the diffusion barrier. As this kind of Nb3Sn conductor design is being developed for sub-elements 1/2 the present size, it is clear that better barriers are essential to allowing higher temperature reactions with better intrinsic A15 properties. We present here multiple and detailed intrinsic and extrinsic evaluations because we believe that only such broad and quantitative descriptions are capable of accurately tracking the limitations of individual conductor designs where optimization will always be a compromise between inherently conflicting goals

Significant progress has been achieved in fabricating high quality bulk and thinfilm iron-based superconductors. In particular, artificial layered pnictide superlattices offer the possibility of tailoring the superconducting properties and understanding the mechanism of the superconductivity itself. For high field applications, large critical current densities (Jc) and irreversibility fields (Hirr) are indispensable along all crystal directions. On the other hand, the development of superconducting devices such as tunnel junctions requires multilayered heterostructures. Here we show that artificially engineered undoped Ba-122 / Co doped Ba-122 compositionally modulated superlattices produce ab-aligned nanoparticle arrays. These layer and self-assemble along c-axis aligned defects, and combine to produce very large Jc and Hirr enhancements over a wide angular range. We also demonstrate a structurally modulated SrTiO3 (STO) / Co doped Ba-122 superlattice with sharp interfaces. Success in superlattice fabrication involving pnictides will aid the progress of heterostructured systems exhibiting novel interfacial phenomena and device applications.

We report here that magnetic fields of almost 34 T, far above the upper 24 T limit of Nb3Sn, can be generated using a multifilament round wire conductor made of the high temperature cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8-x (Bi-2212). A remarkable attribute of this Bi-2212 conductor is that it does not exhibit macroscopic texture and contains many high angle grain boundaries but nevertheless attains very high superconducting critical current densities Jc of 2500 A/mm2 at 20 T and 4.2 K. This Bi-2212 conductor does not possess the extreme texture that high Jc coated conductors of REBa2Cu3O7-x (REBCO) require, avoiding also its high aspect ratio, large superconducting anisotropy and the inherent sensitivity to defects of a single filament conductor. Bi-2212 wires can be wound or cabled into almost any type of superconducting magnet and will be especially valuable for very high field NMR magnets beyond the present 1 GHz proton resonance limit of Nb3Sn technology. This demonstration that grain boundary limits to high Jc can be practically overcome suggests the huge value of a renewed focus on grain boundary properties in non-ideal geometries, especially with the goal of translating the lessons of this Bi-2212 conductor into fabrication of multifilament round wire REBCO or Fe-based superconductors.

Conductor insulation is one of the key components needed to make Ag-alloy clad Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (Bi-2212/Ag) superconducting round wire (RW) successful for high field magnet applications as dielectric standoff and high winding current densities (Jw) directly depend on it. In this study, a TiO2/polymer insulation coating developed by nGimat LLC was applied to test samples and a high field test coil. The insulation was investigated by differential thermal analysis (DTA), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dielectric properties measurement, and transport critical current (Ic) properties measurement. About 29% of the insulation by weight is polymer. When the Bi-2212/Ag wire is full heat treated, this decomposes with slow heating to 400°C in pure O2. After the full reaction, we found that the TiO2 did not degrade the critical current properties, adhered well to the conductor, and provided a breakdown voltage of >100 V, which allowed the test coil to survive quenching in 31.2 T background field, while providing a 2.6 T field increment. For Bi-2212/Ag RW with a typical diameter of 1.0-1.5 mm, this ~15 um thick insulation allows a very high coil packing factor of ~0.74, whereas earlier alumino-silicate braid insulation only allows packing factors of 0.38-0.48.

It is well known that longer Bi-2212 conductors have significantly lower critical current density (Jc) than shorter ones, and recently it has become clear that a major cause of this reduction is internal gas pressure generated during heat treatment, which expands the wire diameter and dedensifies the Bi-2212 filaments. Here we report on the length-dependent expansion of 5 to 240 cm lengths of state-of-the-art, commercial Ag alloy-sheathed Bi-2212 wire after full and some partial heat treatments. Detailed image analysis along the wire length shows that the wire diameter increases with distance from the ends, longer samples often showing evident damage and leaks provoked by the internal gas pressure. Comparison of heat treatments carried out just below the melting point and with the usual melt process makes it clear that melting is crucial to developing high internal pressure. The decay of Jc away from the ends is directly correlated to the local wire diameter increase, which decreases the local Bi-2212 filament mass density and lowers Jc, often by well over 50%. It is clear that control of the internal gas pressure is crucial to attaining the full Jc of these very promising round wires and that the very variable properties of Bi-2212 wires are due to the fact that this internal gas pressure has so far not been well controlled.

Bi-2212 round wire is made by the powder-in-tube technique. An unavoidable property of powder-in-tube conductors is that there is about 30% void space in the as-drawn wire. We have recently shown that the gas present in the as-drawn Bi-2212 wire agglomerates into large bubbles and that they are presently the most deleterious current limiting mechanism. By densifying short 2212 wires before reaction through cold isostatic pressing (CIPping), the void space was almost removed and the gas bubble density was reduced significantly, resulting in a doubled engineering critical current density (JE) of 810 A/mm2 at 5 T, 4.2 K. Here we report on densifying Bi-2212 wire by swaging, which increased JE (4.2 K, 5 T) from 486 A/mm2 for as-drawn wire to 808 A/mm2 for swaged wire. This result further confirms that enhancing the filament packing density is of great importance for making major JE improvement in this round-wire magnet conductor.

Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 can accept a very high density of pins (15-20 vol%) without Tc suppression. The matching field is greater than 12 T, producing a significant enhancement of the critical current density Jc, an almost isotropic Jc (Theta,20T) > 10^5 A/cm2, and global pinning force density Fp of about 50 GN/m^3. This scenario strongly differs from the high temperature cuprates where the addition of pins without Tc suppression is limited to 2-4 vol%, leading to small HIrr enhancements and improved Jc only below 3-5 Tesla.

However, thin-film bicrystals of Co-doped Ba-122 clearly exhibit weak link behavior for [001] tilt misorientations of more than about 5 degrees, suggesting that textured substrates would be needed for applications, as in the cuprates. Here we present a contrary and very much more positive result in which untextured polycrystalline (Ba0.6K0.4)Fe2As2 bulks and round wires with high grain boundary density have transport critical current densities well over 0.1 MAcm-2 (SF, 4.2 K), more than 10 times higher than that of any other ferropnictide wire. The enhanced grain connectivity is ascribed to their much improved phase purity and to the enhanced vortex stiffness of this low-anisotropy compound (Gamma ~ 1-2) compared to YBa2Cu3O7-x (Gamma ~ 5).

We found that the experimental angular dependence of $B_{Irr}(θ)$ does not follow the mass anisotropy scaling $B_{Irr}(θ)=B_{Irr}(0)(cos^2θ+γ^{-2}sin^2θ)^{-1/2}$, where $γ=(m_c/m_{ab})^{1/2}=5-6$ for the RE-doped $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ (REBCO) crystals, m$_{ab}$ and m$_{c}$ are the effective masses along the ab plane and the c-axis, respectively, and $θ$ is the angle between B and the c-axis. For B parallel to the ab-planes and to the c-axis correlated pinning strongly enhances B$_{Irr}$, while at intermediate angles, $B_{Irr}(θ)$ follows the scaling behavior $B_{Irr}(θ)\propto(cos^2θ+γ_{RP}^2sin^2θ)^{1/2}$ with the effective anisotropy factor $γ_{RP}\approx3$ significantly smaller than the mass anisotropy would suggest. In spite of the strong effects of c-axis BaZrO$_{3}$ nanorods, we found even greater enhancements of B$_{Irr}$ for fields along the ab-planes than for fields parallel to the c-axis, as well as different temperature dependences of the correlated pinning contributions to B$_{Irr}$ for B//ab and B//c. Our results show that the dense and strong pins, which can now be incorporated into REBCO thin films in a controlled way, exert major and diverse effects on the measured vortex pinning anisotropy and the irreversibility field over wide ranges of B and T. In particular, we show that the relative contribution of correlated pinning to B$_{Irr}$ for B//c increases as the temperature increases due to the suppression of thermal fluctuations of vortices by splayed distribution of BaZrO$_{3}$ nanorods.

REBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{x}$ films can achieve remarkably high critical current density values by the incorporation of insulating nanoparticles. A particular interesting case concerns BaZrO$_{3}$ (BZO) nanorods, whose strongly correlated effect is seen at high temperatures. Here we investigate the field, temperature and angular dependence of the critical current density over a wide temperature range from 4.2 K to 77 K, and magnetic fields up to 31 T. We show that the correlated c-axis pinning of BZO nanorods becomes progressively less obvious at lower temperature. Indeed at 4.2 K and fields up to 31 T, the only correlated pinning is for fields parallel to the film plane. We interpret the change as being due to significant contributions from dense but weak pins that thermal fluctuations render ineffective at high temperatures but which become strong at lower temperatures.

One of the coils repeatedly reached 35.4 T using a single ~100 m length of REBCO tape wet wound with epoxy and nested in a 31 T background magnet. The coil was quenched safely several times without degradation. Contributing to the success of this coil was the introduction of a thin polyester film that surrounded the conductor. This approach introduces a weak circumferential plane in the coil pack that prevents conductor delamination that has caused degradation of several epoxy impregnated coils previously made by this and other groups.

The Fe-based superconductors (FBS) are an important new class of superconducting materials. As with any new superconductor with a high transition temperature and upper critical field, there is a need to establish what their applications potential might be. Applications require high critical current densities, so the usefulness of any new superconductor is determined both by the capability to develop strong vortex pinning and by the absence or ability to overcome any strong current-limiting mechanisms of which grain boundaries in the cuprates are a cautionary example. In this review we first consider the positive role that grain boundary properties play in the metallic, low temperature superconductors and then review the theoretical background and current experimental data relating to the properties of grain boundaries in FBS polycrystals, bi-crystal thin films, and wires. Based on this evidence, we conclude that grain boundaries in FBS are weak linked in a qualitatively similar way to grain boundaries in the cuprate superconductors, but also that the effects are a little less marked. Initial experiments with the textured substrates used for cuprate coated conductors show similar benefit for the critical current density of FBS thin films too. We also note that the particular richness of the pairing symmetry and the multiband parent state in FBS may provide opportunities for grain boundary modification as a better understanding of their pairing state and grain boundary properties are developed.

Here we compare several examples of both BZO-free and BZO-containing coated conductors using critical current (Ic) characterizations at 4.2 K over their full angular range up to fields of 31 T. We find that BZO nanorods do not produce any c-axis distortion of the critical current density Jc(theta) curve at 4.2 K at any field, but also that pinning is nevertheless strongly enhanced compared to the non-BZO conductors. We also find that the tendency of the ab-plane Jc(theta) peak to become cusp-like is moderated by BZO and we define a new figure of merit that may be helpful for magnet design - the OADI (Off-Axis Double Ic), which clearly shows that BZO broadens the ab-plane peak and thus raises Jc 5-30° away from the tape plane, where the most critical approach to Ic occurs in many coil designs. We describe some experimental procedures that may make critical current Ic tests of these very high current tapes more tractable at 4.2 K, where Ic exceeds 1000 A even for 4 mm wide tape with only 1 micron thickness of superconductor. A positive conclusion is that BZO is very beneficial for the Jc characteristics at 4.2 K, just as it is at higher temperatures, where the correlated c-axis pinning effects of the nanorods are much more obvious.

We report a study of high quality pnictide superconductor BaFe$_{1.84}$Co$_{0.16}$As$_2$ thin films using time-domain THz spectroscopy. Near T$_c$ we find evidence for a coherence peak and qualitative agreement with the weak-coupling Mattis-Bardeen form of the conductivity. At low temperature, we find that the real part of the THz conductivity is not fully suppressed and $σ_2$ is significantly smaller than the Matthis-Bardeen expectation. The temperature dependence of the penetration depth $λ$ follows a power law with an unusually high exponent of 3.1. We interpret these results as consistent with impurity scattering induced pair-breaking. Taken together our results are strong evidence for an extended s$\pm$ symmetry order parameter.

The films show Jc comparable to Jc of single crystals and a maximum pinning force Fp(0.6Tc) > 5 GN/m3 at H/Hirr ~ 0.5 indicative of strong vortex pinning effective up to high fields. Due to the strong correlated c-axis pinning, Jc for field along the c-axis exceeds Jc for H//ab plane, inverting the expectation of the Hc2 anisotropy. We report the influence of atomic disorder introduced by sequential neutron irradiation on the basic superconducting properties, flux pinning and grain connectivity. Two different polycrystalline Sm-1111 samples (SmFeAsO_{1-x}F_x) and two Ba-122 single crystals (BaFe_{1.8}Co_{0.2}As_2) were investigated. The monotonous decrease of the transition temperature with neutron fluence degrades the upper critical field, at least in the investigated temperature region. Pinning on the other hand is largely improved, with a different optimal defect concentration (fluence) in the two materials. The analysis of the current flow in the polycrystalline samples reveals weak link behaviour in the majority of grain connections and the existence of stronger grain connections. The density of the latter seems to be close to the percolation threshold (i.e. the minimum fraction for a continuous current path). Both types of connections are sensitive to disorder and degrade upon neutron irradiation.

Investigating the role of disorder in superconductors is an essential part of characterizing the fundamental superconducting properties as well as assessing potential applications of the material. In most cases, the information available on the defect matrix is poor, making such studies difficult, but the situation can be improved by introducing defects in a controlled way, as provided by neutron irradiation. In this work, we analyze the effects of neutron irradiation on a Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystal. We mainly concentrate on the magnetic properties which were determined by magnetometry. Introducing disorder by neutron irradiation leads to significant effects on both the reversible and the irreversible magnetic properties, such as the transition temperature, the upper critical field, the anisotropy, and the critical current density. The results are discussed in detail by comparing them with the properties in the unirradiated state.

Less than two years after the discovery of high temperature superconductivity in oxypnictide LaFeAs(O,F) several families of superconductors based on Fe layers (1111, 122, 11, 111) are available. They share several characteristics with cuprate superconductors that compromise easy applications, such as the layered structure, the small coherence length, and unconventional pairing, On the other hand the Fe-based superconductors have metallic parent compounds, and their electronic anisotropy is generally smaller and does not strongly depend on the level of doping, the supposed order parameter symmetry is s wave, thus in principle not so detrimental to current transmission across grain boundaries. From the application point of view, the main efforts are still devoted to investigate the superconducting properties, to distinguish intrinsic from extrinsic behaviours and to compare the different families in order to identify which one is the fittest for the quest for better and more practical superconductors. The 1111 family shows the highest Tc, huge but also the most anisotropic upper critical field and in-field, fan-shaped resistive transitions reminiscent of those of cuprates, while the 122 family is much less anisotropic with sharper resistive transitions as in low temperature superconductors, but with about half the Tc of the 1111 compounds. An overview of the main superconducting properties relevant to applications will be presented. Upper critical field, electronic anisotropy parameter, intragranular and intergranular critical current density will be discussed and compared, where possible, across the Fe-based superconductor families.

Understanding new superconductors requires high-quality epitaxial thin films to explore intrinsic electromagnetic properties, control grain boundaries and strain effects, and evaluate device applications. So far superconducting properties of ferropnictide thin films appear compromised by imperfect epitaxial growth and poor connectivity of the superconducting phase. Here we report novel template engineering using single-crystal intermediate layers of (001) SrTiO3 and BaTiO3 grown on various perovskite substrates that enables genuine epitaxial films of Co-doped BaFe2As2 with high transition temperature (zero resistivity Tc of 21.5K), small transition widths (delta Tc = 1.3K), superior Jc of 4.5 MA/cm2 (4.2K, self field) and strong c-axis flux pinning. Implementing SrTiO3 or BaTiO3 templates to match the alkaline earth layer in the Ba-122 with the alkaline earth-oxygen layer in the templates opens new avenues for epitaxial growth of ferropnictides on multi-functional single crystal substrates. Beyond superconductors, it provides a framework for growing heteroepitaxial intermetallic compounds on various substrates by matching interfacial layers between templates and thin film overlayers.

We report a direct current transport study of the local intergrain connections in a polycrystalline SmFeAsO0.85 (Sm1111) bulk, for which we earlier estimated significant intergranular critical current density Jc. Our combined low temperature laser scanning microscopy (LTLSM) and scanning electron microscopy observations revealed only few grain-to-grain transport current paths, most of which switched off when a magnetic field was applied. These regions typically occur where current crosses Fe-As, which is a normal-metal wetting-phase that surrounds Sm1111 grains, producing a dense array of superconducting-normal-superconducting contacts. Our study points out the need to reduce the amount of grain boundary-wetting Fe-As phase, as well as the crack density within pnictide grains, as these defects produce a multiply connected current-blocking network.

We present measurements of the resistivity and the upper critical field H_c2 of Nd(O_0.7F_0.3)FeAs single crystals in strong DC and pulsed magnetic fields up to 45 T and 60 T, respectively. We found that the field scale of H_c2 is comparable to ~100 T of high T_c cuprates. H_c2(T) parallel to the c-axis exhibits a pronounced upward curvature similar to what was extracted from earlier measurements on polycrystalline samples. Thus this behavior is indeed an intrinsic feature of oxypnictides, rather than manifestation of vortex lattice melting or granularity. The orientational dependence of H_c2 shows deviations from the one-band Ginzburg-Landau scaling. The mass anisotropy decreases as T decreases, from 9.2 at 44K to 5 at 34K. Spin dependent magnetoresistance and nonlinearities in the Hall coefficient suggest contribution to the conductivity from electron-electron interactions modified by disorder reminiscent that of diluted magnetic semiconductors. The Ohmic resistivity measured below T_c but above the irreversibility field exhibits a clear Arrhenius thermally activated behavior over 4-5 decades. The activation energy has very different field dependencies for H||ab and H\perp ab. We discuss to what extent different pairing scenarios can manifest themselves in the observed behavior of H_{c2}, using the two-band model of superconductivity. The results indicate the importance of paramagnetic effects on H_c2(T),which may significantly reduce H_c2(0) as compared toH_c2(0)~200-300 T based on extrapolations of H_c2(T) near T_c down to low temperatures.

The correctly extracted $γ$ depends on both $T$ and $H$, saturating at $γ\simeq 9$ at lower temperatures. Neither the London penetration depth nor the superfluid density is affected by high fields fields up to the upper critical field. Our results indicate two strongly-coupled superconducting gaps of nearly equal magnitudes.

In order to understand why the inter- and intra-granular current densities of polycrystalline superconducting oxypnictides differ by three orders of magnitude, we have conducted combined magneto-optical and microstructural examinations of representative randomly oriented polycrystalline Nd and Sm single-layer oxypnictides. Magneto optical images show that the highest Jc values are observed within single grains oriented with their c axes perpendicular to the observation plane, implying that the intragranular current is anisotropic. The much lower intergranular Jc is at least partially due to many extrinsic factors, because cracks and a ubiquitous wetting As-Fe phase are found at many grain boundaries. However, some grain boundaries are structurally clean under high resolution transmission electron microscopy examination. Because the whole-sample global Jc(5K) values of the two samples examined are 1000-4000 A/cm2, some 10-40 times that found in random, polycrystalline YBa2Cu3O7-x, it appears that the dominant obstruction to intergranular current flow of many present samples is extrinsic, though some intrinsic limitation of current flow across grain boundaries cannot yet be ruled out.

Jc reached 104 A/cm2 at 4.2 K and 10 T, with an irreversibility field of about 14 T at 4.2 K, and Hc2 of 9 T at 25 K, high values for not-doped MgB2. The enhanced Jc and H* values are associated with significant grain refinement produced by milling of the MgB2 powder, which enhances grain boundary pinning, although at the same time also reducing the connectivity from about 12% to 8%. Although enhanced pinning and diminished connectivity are in opposition, the overall influence of ball milling on Jc is positive because the increased density of grains with a size comparable with the mean free path produces strong electron scattering that substantially increases Hc2, especially Hc2 perpendicular to the Mg and B planes.

Like the cuprates, the oxypnictides seem to manifest an interleaving of charge donor and superconducting layers emerging upon doping of an antiferromagnetic parent semi-metal. Here we report magneto-transport measurements of three rare earth (Re = La, Nd, Sm) oxypnicide compounds with the transition temperatures near the maximum reported to date, in very high DC and pulsed magnetic fields up to 45 and 54 T, respectively. Early studies have found quasi-reversible magnetization curves in polycrystalline bulk rare-earth iron oxypnictides that suggest either wide-spread obstacles to intergranular current or very weak vortex pinning. In the present study of polycrystalline samarium and neodymium rare-earth iron oxypnictide samples made by high pressure synthesis, the hysteretic magnetization is significantly enhanced. Magneto optical imaging and study of the field dependence of the remanent magnetization as a function of particle size both show that global currents over the whole sample do exist but that the intergranular and intragranular current densities have distinctively different temperature dependences and differ in magnitude by about 1000. Assuming that the highest current density loops are restricted to circulation only within grains leads to values of ~5 MA/cm2 at 5 K and self field, while whole-sample current densities, though two orders of magnitude lower are 1000-10000 A/cm2, some two orders of magnitude higher than in random polycrystalline cuprates. We cannot yet be certain whether this large difference in global and intragrain current density is intrinsic to the oxypnictides or due to extrinsic barriers to current flow, because the samples contain significant second phase, some of which wets the grain boundaries and produces evidences of SNS proximity effect in the whole sample critical current.

The new rare-earth arsenate superconductors are layered, low carrier density compounds with many similarities to the high-Tc cuprates. An important question is whether they also exhibit weak-coupling across randomly oriented grain-boundaries. In this work we show considerable evidence for such weak-coupling by study of the dependence of magnetization in bulk and powdered samples. Bulk sample magnetization curves show very little hysteresis while remanent magnetization shows almost no sample size dependence, even after powdering. We conclude that these samples exhibit substantial electromagnetic granularity on a scale approximating the grain size, though we cannot yet determine whether this is intrinsic or extrinsic.

Abstract:
The ongoing search for new superconductors has recently yielded a new family of oxypnictides composed of alternating La_2O_{2-x}F_x and Fe_2As_2 layers [1-4] with transition temperatures T_c of 25-28 K, which can be raised to 40-43 K by replacing La with Ce [5] or Sm [6] or to 52 K by replacing La with Nd and Pr [7, 8]. Recent experiments and band structure calculations have suggested an unconventional multiband superconductivity in the layers of paramagnetic Fe ions, which would normally destroy superconductivity in the traditional mechanism of the s-wave Cooper pairing. Here we report very high-field resistance measurements up to 45T, which show a remarkable enhancement of the upper critical fields B_c2 at low temperatures, as compared to those expected from the already high slopes of dB_c2/dT ~ 2T/K near T_c . The deduced B_c2(0) ~ 63-65 T exceeds the paramagnetic limit, consistent with strong coupling and important two-band effects in LaFeAsO_0.89F_0.11. We argue that oxypnictides are emerging as a new class of high-field superconductors surpassing the B_c2 of Nb_3Sn, MgB_2, and the Chevrel phases and perhaps approaching the 100T field benchmark of the high-T_c cuprates.

Magnesium diboride (MgB2) powder was mechanically alloyed by high energy ball milling with C to a composition of Mg(B0.95C0.05)2 and then sintered at 1000 C in a hot isostatic press. Milling times varied from 1 minute to 3000 minutes. Full C incorporation required only 30-60 min of milling. Grain size of sintered samples decreased with increased milling time to less than 30 nm for 20-50 hrs of milling. Milling had a weak detrimental effect on connectivity. Strong irreversibility field (H*) increase (from 13.3 T to 17.2 T at 4.2 K) due to increased milling time was observed and correlated linearly with inverse grain size (1/d). As a result, high field Jc benefited greatly from lengthy powder milling. Jc(8 T, 4.2 K) peaked at > 80,000 A/cm2 with 1200 min of milling compared with only ~ 26,000 A/cm2 for 60 min of milling. This non-compositional performance increase is attributed to grain refinement of the unsintered powder by milling, and to the probable suppression of grain growth by milling-induced MgO nano-dispersions.
