Magnetic frustration is a route that can lead to the emergence of novel ground states, including spin liquids and spin ices. Such frustration can be introduced through either the geometry of lattice structures or by incompatible exchange interactions. Identifying suitable strategies to control the degree of magnetic frustration in real systems is an active field of research. In this study, we devise a design principle for the tuning of frustrated magnetism on the square lattice through the manipulation of nearest (NN) and next-nearest neighbor (NNN) antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange interactions. By studying the magnon excitations in epitaxially-strained La$_2$NiO$_4$ films using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) we show that, in contrast to the cuprates, the dispersion peaks at the AF zone boundary. This indicates the presence of an AF-NNN spin interaction. Using first principles simulations and an effective spin-model, we demonstrate the AF-NNN coupling to be a consequence of the two-orbital nature of La$_2$NiO$_4$. Our results demonstrate that compressive strain can enhance this coupling, providing a design principle for the tunability of frustrated magnetism on a square lattice.

Lightwave periodic driving of nearly dissipation-less currents has recently emerged as a universal control concept for both superconducting (SC) and topological electronics applications. While exciting progress has been made towards THz-driven superconductivity, our understanding of the interactions able to drive non-equilibrium pairing is still limited, partially due to the lack of direct measurements of high-order correlation functions. Such measurements would exceed conventional single-particle spectroscopies and perturbative responses to fully characterize quantum states far-from-equilibrium. Particularly, sensing of the exotic collective modes that would uniquely characterize lightwave-driven SC coherence, in a way analogous to the Meissner effect, is very challenging but much needed. Here we report the discovery of lightwave-controlled superconductivity via parametric time-periodic driving of the strongly-coupled bands in iron-based superconductors by a unique phase-amplitude collective mode assisted by broken-symmetry THz supercurrents. We are able to measure non-perturbative, high-order correlations in this strongly-driven superconductivity by separating the THz multi-dimensional coherent spectra into conventional pump-probe, Higgs collective mode, and pronounced bi--Higgs frequency sideband peaks with highly nonlinear field dependence. We attribute the drastic transition in the coherent spectra to parametric excitation of time-dependent pseudo--spin canting states modulated by a phase-amplitude collective mode that manifests as a strongly nonlinear shift from $ω_\mathrm{Higgs}$ to 2$ω_\mathrm{Higgs}$. Remarkably, the latter higher--order sidebands dominate over the lower-order pump-probe and Higgs mode peaks above critical field, which indicates the breakdown of the susceptibility perturbative expansion in the parametrically-driven SC state.

We investigated the nonlinear Meissner effect (NLME) in Nb$_3$Sn thin film coplanar resonators by measuring the resonance frequency as a function of a parallel magnetic field at different temperatures. We used low rf power probing in films thinner than the London penetration depth $λ(B)$ to significantly increase the field onset of vortex penetration and measure the NLME under equilibrium conditions. Contrary to the conventional quadratic increase of $λ(B)$ with $B$ expected in s-wave superconductors, we observed a nearly linear increase of the penetration depth with $B$. We concluded that this behavior of $λ(B)$ is due to weak linked grain boundaries in our polycrystalline Nb$_3$Sn films, which can mimic the NLME expected in a clean d-wave superconductor.

We observe pronounced oscillations in differential reflectivity of 9 nm and 60 nm BaFe\textsubscript{2}As\textsubscript{2} (Ba-122) thin films using ultrafast optical spectroscopy. Our studies show that the oscillations result from propagating longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonon wave packets with strong thickness and temperature dependence. Particularly, the experimentally measured oscillation frequency approaches to 50 GHz for the ultra-thin film. Our calculations show that Young's modulus of 9 nm thin film is nearly four times as large as that of 60 nm thin film, consistent with the experiment. The increase in Young's modulus as thickness decrease was attributed to the decrease in parent Ba-122 tetragonality $c/a$ near the film-substrate interface due to material-substrate mismatch effect. %Temperature dependence of LA phonon mode frequency for 9 nm Ba-122 thin film is reported. The temperature-dependent change in LA phonon frequency was attributed to the change in parent Ba-122 othorhombicity $(a-b)/(a+b)$.

Bulk single-crystal relaxor-ferroelectrics, like Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PT), are widely known for their large piezoelectricity. This is attributed to polarization rotation which is facilitated by the presence of various crystal symmetries for compositions near a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). Relaxor-ferroelectric thin films, which are necessary for low-voltage applications, suffer a reduction in their piezoelectric response due to clamping by the passive substrate. To understand the microscopic behavior of this adverse phenomenon, we employ AC electric field driven in-operando synchrotron x-ray diffraction (XRD) on patterned device structures to investigate the piezoelectric domain behavior under an electric field for both a clamped (001) PMN-PT thin film on Si and a (001) PMN-PT membrane released from its substrate. In the clamped film, the substrate inhibits the field induced rhombohedral (R) to tetragonal (T) phase transition resulting in a reversible R to Monoclinic (M) transition with a reduced longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient d33 < 100 pm/V. Releasing the film from the substrate results in recovery of the R to T transition and results in a d33 > 1000 pm/V. Using diffraction with spatial mapping, we find that lateral constraints imposed by the boundary between active and inactive material also inhibits the R to T transition. Phase-field calculations on both clamped and released PMN-PT thin films simulate our experimental findings. Resolving the suppression of thin film piezoelectric response is critical to their application in piezo-driven technologies.

Strain-mediated magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in ferroelectric (FE) / ferromagnetic (FM) heterostructures offers a unique opportunity for both fundamental scientific research and low power multifunctional devices. Relaxor-ferroelectrics, like (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-(x)PbTiO3 (PMN-xPT), are ideal FE layer candidates due to their giant piezoelectricity. But thin films of PMN-PT suffer from substrate clamping which substantially reduces piezoelectric in-plane strains. Here we present the first demonstration of low voltage ME coupling in an all-thin-film heterostructure which utilizes the anisotropic strains induced by the (011) orientation of PMN-PT. We completely remove PMN-PT films from their substrate and couple with FM Ni overlayers to create membrane PMN-PT/Ni heterostructures showing 90 degree Ni magnetization rotation with 3V PMN-PT bias, much less than the bulk PMNPT ~100V requirement. Scanning transmission electron microscopy and phase-field simulations clarify the membrane response. These results provide a crucial step towards understanding the microstructural behavior of PMN-PT thin films for use in piezo-driven magnetoelectric heterostructures.

The control of the in-plane domain evolution in ferroelectric thin films is not only critical to understanding ferroelectric phenomena but also to enabling functional device fabrication. However, in-plane polarized ferroelectric thin films typically exhibit complicated multi-domain states, not desirable for optoelectronic device performance. Here we report a strategy combining interfacial symmetry engineering and anisotropic strain to design single-domain, in-plane polarized ferroelectric BaTiO$_3$ thin films. Theoretical calculations predict the key role of the BaTiO$_3$ / PrScO$_3$ (110)$_O$ substrate interfacial environment, where anisotropic strain, monoclinic distortions, and interfacial electrostatic potential stabilize a single-variant spontaneous polarization. A combination of scanning transmission electron microscopy, piezoresponse force microscopy, ferroelectric hysteresis loop measurements, and second harmonic generation measurements directly reveals the stabilization of the in-plane quasi-single-domain polarization state. This work offers design principles for engineering in-plane domains of ferroelectric oxide thin films, which is a prerequisite for high performance optoelectronic devices.

The Higgs mechanism, i.e., spontaneous symmetry breaking of the quantum vacuum, is a cross-disciplinary principle, universal for understanding dark energy, antimatter and quantum materials, from superconductivity to magnetism. Yet, Higgs modes in one-band superconductors (SCs) are currently under debate due to their competition with charge-density fluctuations. A distinct Higgs mode, controllable by terahertz (THz) laser pulses, can arise in multi-band, unconventional SCs via strong {\em interband} Coulomb interaction, but is yet to be accessed. Here we both discover and demonstrate quantum control of such collective mode in iron-based high-temperature superconductors. Using two-pulse, phase coherent THz spectroscopy, we observe a tunable and coherent 2$Δ_{\mathrm{SC}}$ amplitude oscillation of the complex order parameter in such SC with coupled lower and upper bands. The nonlinear dependence of the amplitude mode oscillations on the THz driving fields is distinct from any one-band and conventional SC results: we observe a large nonlinear change of resonance strength, yet with a persisting mode frequency. We argue that this result provides compelling evidence for a transient coupling between the electron and hole amplitude modes via strong interband coherent interaction. To support this scenario, we perform quantum kinetic modeling of a hybrid Higgs mechanism without invoking extra disorder or phonons. In addition to distinguishing between collective modes and charge fluctuations, the light quantum control of multiband SCs can be extended to probe and manipulate many-body entanglement and hidden symmetries in different quantum materials.

A non-thermal, THz-induced depletion of low frequency conductivity indicates increased gap splitting of high energy $Γ_{12}$ bands by removal of their degeneracies which enhances the Martensitic phase. In contrast, optical pumping leads to a $Γ_{12}$ gap melting. Such light-induced non-equilibrium Martensitic instability persists up to a critical temperature $\sim$100 K, i.e., more than twice the equilibrium temperature, and can be stabilized beyond technologically-relevant, nanosecond timescales. Together with first-principle simulations, we identify a compelling THz tuning of structural fluctuations via E$_u$ phonons to achieve a non-equilibrium ordering at high temperatures far exceeding those for equilibrium states.

Metal-to-insulator phase transitions in complex oxide thin films are exciting phenomena which may be useful for device applications, but in many cases the physical mechanism responsible for the transition is not fully understood. Here we demonstrate that epitaxial strain generates local disproportionation of the NiO6 octahedra, driven through changes in the oxygen stoichiometry, and that this directly modifies the metal-to-insulator phase transition in epitaxial (001) NdNiO3 thin films. Theoretically, we predict that the Ni-O-Ni bond angle decreases, while octahedral tilt and local disproportionation of the NiO6 octahedra increases resulting in a small band gap in otherwise metallic system. This is driven by an increase in oxygen vacancy concentration in the rare-earth nickelates with increasing in-plane biaxial tensile strain. Experimentally, we find an increase in pseudocubic unit-cell volume and resistivity with increasing biaxial tensile strain, corroborating our theoretical predictions. With electron energy loss spectroscopy and x-ray absorption, we find a reduction of the Ni valence with increasing tensile strain. These results indicate that epitaxial strain modifies the oxygen stoichiometry of rare-earth perovskite thin films and through this mechanism affect the metal-to-insulator phase transition in these compounds.

The spin-Hall effect describes the interconversion of charge currents and spin currents, enabling highly efficient manipulation of magnetization for spintronics. Symmetry conditions generally restrict polarizations of these spin currents to be orthogonal to both the charge and spin flows. Spin polarizations can deviate from such direction in nonmagnetic materials only when the crystalline symmetry is reduced11. Here we experimentally show control of the spin polarization direction by using a non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn$_{3}$GaN, in which the triangular spin structure creates a low magnetic symmetry state while maintaining a high crystalline symmetry. We demonstrate that epitaxial Mn3GaN/Permalloy heterostructures can generate unique types of spinHall torques at room temperature corresponding to unconventional spin polarizations collinear to spin currents or charge currents which are forbidden in any sample with two-fold rotational symmetry. Our results demonstrate an approach based on spin-structure design for controlling spinorbit torque, paving the way for further progress in the emergent field of antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Such SHG signal is observed in single-pulse emission by periodic driving with a multi-cycle THz electric field tuned below the SC energy gap and vanishes above the SC critical temperature. We explain the microscopic physics by a dynamical symmetry breaking principle at sub-THz-cycle by using quantum kinetic modeling of the interplay between strong THz-lightwave nonlinearity and pulse propagation. The resulting non-zero integrated pulse area inside the SC drives lightwave nonlinear supercurrents due to sub--cycle Cooper pair acceleration, in contrast to d.c.-biased superconductors, which can be controlled by the bandstructure and the THz pump field.

Strain-coupled magnetoelectric (ME) phenomena in piezoelectric / ferromagnetic thin-film bilayers are a promising paradigm for sensors and information storage devices, where strain is utilized to manipulate the magnetization of the ferromagnetic film. In-plane magnetization rotation with an electric field across the film thickness has been challenging due to the virtual elimination of in-plane piezoelectric strain by substrate clamping, and to the requirement of anisotropic in-plane strain in two-terminal devices. We have overcome both of these limitations by fabricating lithographically patterned devices with a piezoelectric membrane on a soft substrate platform, in which in-plane strain is freely generated, and a patterned edge constraint that transforms the nominally isotropic piezoelectric strain into the required uniaxial strain. We fabricated 500 nm thick, (001) oriented [Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$]$_{0.7}$-[PbTiO$_3$]$_{0.3}$ (PMN-PT) unclamped piezoelectric membranes with ferromagnetic Ni overlayers. Guided by analytical and numerical continuum elastic calculations, we designed and fabricated two-terminal devices exhibiting Ni magnetization rotation in response to an electric field across the PMN-PT. Similar membrane heterostructures could be used to apply designed strain patterns to many other materials systems to control properties such as superconductivity, band topology, conductivity, and optical response.

The isotropic, non-magnetic doped BaBiO$_3$ superconductors maintain some similarities to high-Tc cuprates, while also providing a cleaner system for isolating charge density wave (CDW) physics that commonly competes with superconductivity. Artificial layered superlattices offer the possibility of engineering the interaction between superconductivity and CDW. Here we stabilize a low temperature, fluctuating short range CDW order by using artificially layered epitaxial (BaPbO$_3$)$_{3m}$/(BaBiO$_3$)$_m$ (m = 1-10 unit cells) superlattices that is not present in the optimally doped BaPb$_{0.75}$Bi$_{0.25}$O$_3$ alloy with the same overall chemical formula. Charge transfer from BaBiO$_3$ to BaPbO$_3$ effectively dopes the former and suppresses the long range CDW, however as the short range CDW fluctuations strengthens at low temperatures charge appears to localize and superconductivity is weakened. The monolayer structural control demonstrated here provides compelling implications to access controllable, local density-wave orders absent in bulk alloys and manipulate phase competition in unconventional superconductors.

By growing (111)-oriented BiFeO$_3$ films on an orthorhombic TbScO$_3$ substrate, we are able to overcome this, and, by exploiting the magnetoelastic coupling between the magnetic and crystal structures, bias the growth of a given magnetic-, ferroelectric-, and structural-domain film. We further demonstrate the coupling of the magnetic structure to the ferroelectric polarisation by showing the magnetic polarity in this domain is inverted upon 180$^\circ$ ferroelectric switching

We report the low-energy electrodynamics of a moderately clean A15 superconductor (SC) following ultrafast excitation to understand and manipulate terahertz (THz) quasi--particle (QP) transport by tuning pump photoexcitation of from competing orders. Using 35-fs optical pulses, we observe a non-thermal enhancement in the low frequency conductivity, opposite to that observed for THz pump, which persists up to an additional critical temperature, above the SC one, from an electronic order in the Martensitic normal state. In the SC state, the fluence dependence of pair breaking kinetics together with an analytic model provides evidence for a `one photon-to-one pair' non-resonant energy transfer during the laser pulse. Such initial transfer of photon energy $\hbarω$ to QPs at the {\em quantum} limit, set by $2Δ_{SC}/\hbarω$=0.33$\%$, is more than one order of magnitude smaller than in previously studied BCS SCs, which we attribute to strong electron--phonon coupling and possible influence of phonon condensation in A15 SCs.

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the interaction between the electron spin and the orbital angular momentum, can unlock rich phenomena at interfaces, in particular interconverting spin and charge currents. Conventional heavy metals have been extensively explored due to their strong SOC of conduction electrons. However, spin-orbit effects in classes of materials such as epitaxial 5d-electron transition metal complex oxides, which also host strong SOC, remain largely unreported. In addition to strong SOC, these complex oxides can also provide the additional tuning knob of epitaxy to control the electronic structure and the engineering of spin-to-charge conversion by crystalline symmetry. Here, we demonstrate room-temperature generation of spin-orbit torque on a ferromagnet with extremely high efficiency via the spin-Hall effect in epitaxial metastable perovskite SrIrO3. We first predict a large intrinsic spin-Hall conductivity in orthorhombic bulk SrIrO3 arising from the Berry curvature in the electronic band structure. By manipulating the intricate interplay between SOC and crystalline symmetry, we control the spin-Hall torque ratio by engineering the tilt of the corner-sharing oxygen octahedra in perovskite SrIrO3 through epitaxial strain. This allows the presence of an anisotropic spin-Hall effect due to a characteristic structural anisotropy in SrIrO3 with orthorhombic symmetry. Our experimental findings demonstrate the heteroepitaxial symmetry design approach to engineer spin-orbit effects. We therefore anticipate that these epitaxial 5d transition-metal oxide thin films can be an ideal building block for low-power spintronics.

We have directly imaged reversible electrical switching of the cycloidal rotation direction (magnetic polarity) in a (111)-BiFeO3 epitaxial-film device at room temperature by non-resonant x-ray magnetic scattering. Consistent with previous reports, fully relaxed (111)-BiFeO3 epitaxial films consisting of a single ferroelectric domain were found to comprise a sub-micron-scale mosaic of magneto-elastic domains, all sharing a common direction of the magnetic polarity, which was found to switch reversibly upon reversal of the ferroelectric polarization without any measurable change of the magneto-elastic domain population. A real-space polarimetry map of our device clearly distinguished between regions of the sample electrically addressed into the two magnetic states with a resolution of a few tens of micron. Contrary to the general belief that the magneto-electric coupling in BiFeO3 is weak, we find that electrical switching has a dramatic effect on the magnetic structure, with the magnetic moments rotating on average by 90 degrees at every cycle.

Our measurement results show that Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ has have a wide superconducting transition width and may have a multi-gap nature. In addition, based on the $1/T^2$ dependence of the third harmonics signal at lower temperature, Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ shows the possibility of nodal behavior.

Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 is the most tunable of the Fe-based superconductors (FBS) in terms of acceptance of high densities of self-assembled and artificially introduced pinning centres which are effective in significantly increasing the critical current density, Jc. Moreover, FBS are very sensitive to strain, which induces an important enhancement in critical temperature, Tc, of the material. In this paper we demonstrate that strain induced by the substrate can further improve Jc of both single and multilayer films by more than that expected simply due to the increase in Tc. The multilayer deposition of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 on CaF2 increases the pinning force density Fp by more than 60% compared to a single layer film, reaching a maximum of 84 GN/m^3 at 22.5T and 4.2 K, the highest value ever reported in any 122 phase.

However, little is known about the electron properties of these systems. Here we investigate the electrodynamics of these superconducting pnictide superlattices in the normal and superconducting state by using infrared reflectivity, from THz to visible range. We find that multi-gap structure of these superlattices is preserved, whereas some significant changes are observed in their electronic structure with respect to those of the original pnictide. Our results suggest that possible attempts to further increase the flux pinning may lead to a breakdown of the pnictide superconducting properties.

We find that the magnetic field induces a transition into a weakly insulating state, as is observed for the electrostatically tuned SIT at this interface. Finite size scaling of the magnetoresistance yields the critical exponent product $zν\simeq$ 7/3, indicating that the transition is governed by quantum percolation effects. While such critical exponents have been reported previously for high resistance films, they have not been reported for a low resistance system like ours, with a maximum sheet resistance of $\approx$ 1.5 k$Ω$, much less than the quantum of resistance $R_Q \equiv h/4e^2 = 6.45$ k$Ω$.

The temperature ($T$) dependence of the optical conductivity spectra $σ(ω)$ of a single crystal SrRuO$_3$ thin film is studied over a $T$ range from 5 to 450 K. We observed significant $T$ dependence of the spectral weights of the charge transfer and interband $d$-$d$ transitions across the ferromagnetic Curie temperature ($T_c$ ~ 150 K). Such $T$ dependence was attributed to the increase in the Ru spin moment, which is consistent with the results of density functional theory calculations. $T$ scans of $σ(Ω, T)$ at fixed frequencies $Ω$ reveal a clear $T^2$ dependence below $T_c$, demonstrating that the Stoner mechanism is involved in the evolution of the electronic structure. In addition, $σ(Ω, T)$ continues to evolve at temperatures above $T_c$, indicating that the local spin moment persists in the paramagnetic state. This suggests that SrRuO$_3$ is an intriguing oxide system with itinerant ferromagnetism.

Significant progress has been achieved in fabricating high quality bulk and thinfilm iron-based superconductors. In particular, artificial layered pnictide superlattices offer the possibility of tailoring the superconducting properties and understanding the mechanism of the superconductivity itself. For high field applications, large critical current densities (Jc) and irreversibility fields (Hirr) are indispensable along all crystal directions. On the other hand, the development of superconducting devices such as tunnel junctions requires multilayered heterostructures. Here we show that artificially engineered undoped Ba-122 / Co doped Ba-122 compositionally modulated superlattices produce ab-aligned nanoparticle arrays. These layer and self-assemble along c-axis aligned defects, and combine to produce very large Jc and Hirr enhancements over a wide angular range. We also demonstrate a structurally modulated SrTiO3 (STO) / Co doped Ba-122 superlattice with sharp interfaces. Success in superlattice fabrication involving pnictides will aid the progress of heterostructured systems exhibiting novel interfacial phenomena and device applications.

Here we report an optical investigation in the terahertz region of a 40 nm ultrathin BaFe$_{1.84}$Co$_{0.16}$As$_2$ superconducting film with superconducting transition temperature T$_c$ = 17.5 K. A detailed analysis of the combined reflectance and transmittance measurements showed that the optical properties of the superconducting system can be described in terms of a two-band, two-gap model. The zero temperature value of the large gap $Δ_B$, which seems to follow a BCS-like behavior, results to be $Δ_B$(0) = 17 cm$^{-1}$. For the small gap, for which $Δ_A$(0) = 8 cm$^{-1}$, the temperature dependence cannot be clearly established. These gap values and those reported in the literature for the BaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_{x}$As$_2$ system by using infrared spectroscopy, when put together as a function of T$_c$, show a tendency to cluster along two main curves, providing a unified perspective of the measured optical gaps. Below a temperature around 20 K, the gap-sizes as a function of T$_c$ seem to have a BCS-like linear behavior, but with different slopes. Above this temperature, both gaps show different supra-linear behaviors.

The concept of duality has proved extremely powerful in extending our understanding in many areas of physics (1, 2). Charge-vortex duality has been proposed (3, 4) as a model to understand the superconductor to insulator transition (SIT) in disordered thin films (5, 6) and Josephson junction arrays (7, 8, 9). In this model, on the superconducting side, one has delocalized Cooper pairs but localized vortices; while on the insulating side, one has localized Cooper pairs but mobile vortices. Here we show a new experimental manifestation of this duality in the electron gas that forms at the interface between LaAlO$_3$ (LAO) and SrTiO$_3$ (STO) (10, 11, 12, 13, 14). The effect is due to the motion of vortices generated by the magnetization dynamics of the ferromagnet that also forms at the same interface (14, 15, 16), which results in an increase in resistance on the superconducting side of the transition, but an increase in conductance on the insulating side.

Using longitudinal and transverse magnetotransport measurements, we have determined that disorder at the interface influences the conduction behavior, and that increasing the carrier concentration by growing at lower oxygen partial pressure changes the conduction from strongly localized at low carrier concentration to metallic at higher carrier concentration, with indications of weak localization. We interpret this behavior in terms of a changing occupation of Ti 3d bands near the interface, each with a different spatial extent and susceptibility to localization by disorder, and differences in carrier confinement due to misfit strain and point defects.

We investigated a switchable ferroelectric diode effect and its physical mechanism in Pt/BiFeO3/SrRuO3 thin-film capacitors. Our results of electrical measurements support that, near the Pt/BiFeO3 interface of as-grown samples, a defective layer (possibly, an oxygen-vacancy-rich layer) becomes formed and disturbs carrier injection. We therefore used an electrical training process to obtain ferroelectric control of the diode polarity where, by changing the polarization direction using an external bias, we could switch the transport characteristics between forward and reverse diodes. Our system is characterized with a rectangular polarization hysteresis loop, with which we confirmed that the diode polarity switching occurred at the ferroelectric coercive voltage. Moreover, we observed a simultaneous switching of the diode polarity and the associated photovoltaic response dependent on the ferroelectric domain configurations. Our detailed study suggests that the polarization charge can affect the Schottky barrier at the ferroelectric/metal interfaces, resulting in a modulation of the interfacial carrier injection. The amount of polarization-modulated carrier injection can affect the transition voltage value at which a space-charge-limited bulk current-voltage (J-V) behavior is changed from Ohmic (i.e., J ~ V) to nonlinear (i.e., J ~ V^n with n \geq 2). This combination of bulk conduction and polarization-modulated carrier injection explains the detailed physical mechanism underlying the switchable diode effect in ferroelectric capacitors.

Ferromagnetism is usually considered to be incompatible with conventional superconductivity, as it destroys the singlet correlations responsible for the pairing interaction. Superconductivity and ferromagnetism are known to coexist in only a few bulk rare-earth materials. Here we report evidence for their coexistence in a two-dimensional system: the interface between two bulk insulators, LaAlO$_3$ (LAO) and SrTiO$_3$ (STO), a system that has been studied intensively recently. Magnetoresistance, Hall and electric-field dependence measurements suggest that there are two distinct bands of charge carriers that contribute to the interface conductivity. The sensitivity of properties of the interface to an electric field make this a fascinating system for the study of the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism.

The variations of the crystallographic tilt angle and the c lattice constant, caused by the lattice mismatch, along the film thickness were analyzed quantitatively using the X-ray diffraction technique. By generalizing the Nagai model, we estimated how step bunching resulted in the vertical lattice mismatch between adjacent BiFeO3 layers, which induced the strain relaxation and crystallographic tilt. The step bunching was confirmed by the increased terrace width on the BiFeO3 surface.

Recently a metallic state was discovered at the interface between insulating oxides, most notably LaAlO3 and SrTiO3. Properties of this two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) have attracted significant interest due to its potential applications in nanoelectronics. Control over this carrier density and mobility of the 2DEG is essential for applications of these novel systems, and may be achieved by epitaxial strain. However, despite the rich nature of strain effects on oxide materials properties, such as ferroelectricity, magnetism, and superconductivity, the relationship between the strain and electrical properties of the 2DEG at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterointerface remains largely unexplored. Here, we use different lattice constant single crystal substrates to produce LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces with controlled levels of biaxial epitaxial strain. We have found that tensile strained SrTiO3 destroys the conducting 2DEG, while compressively strained SrTiO3 retains the 2DEG, but with a carrier concentration reduced in comparison to the unstrained LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface. We have also found that the critical LaAlO3 overlayer thickness for 2DEG formation increases with SrTiO3 compressive strain. Our first-principles calculations suggest that a strain-induced electric polarization in the SrTiO3 layer is responsible for this behavior. It is directed away from the interface and hence creates a negative polarization charge opposing that of the polar LaAlO3 layer. This both increases the critical thickness of the LaAlO3 layer, and reduces carrier concentration above the critical thickness, in agreement with our experimental results. Our findings suggest that epitaxial strain can be used to tailor 2DEGs properties of the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterointerface.

We report a study of high quality pnictide superconductor BaFe$_{1.84}$Co$_{0.16}$As$_2$ thin films using time-domain THz spectroscopy. Near T$_c$ we find evidence for a coherence peak and qualitative agreement with the weak-coupling Mattis-Bardeen form of the conductivity. At low temperature, we find that the real part of the THz conductivity is not fully suppressed and $σ_2$ is significantly smaller than the Matthis-Bardeen expectation. The temperature dependence of the penetration depth $λ$ follows a power law with an unusually high exponent of 3.1. We interpret these results as consistent with impurity scattering induced pair-breaking. Taken together our results are strong evidence for an extended s$\pm$ symmetry order parameter.

Point-contact spectroscopy is a powerful tool for probing superconductors. One of the most common observations in the point-contact spectra on the recently discovered ferropnictide superconductors is a large conductance asymmetry with respect to voltage across the point-contact. In this paper we show that the antisymmetric part of the point-contact spectrum between a silver tip and an epitaxial thin film of Ba(Fe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08}$)$_2$As$_2$ shows certain unique features. These features have an interesting evolution with increasing temperature up to a temperature that is 30% larger than the critical temperature $T_c$ of the superconductor. We argue that this evolution can be associated with the rich normal state properties of these materials.

The normal state properties of the recently discovered ferropnictide superconductors might hold the key to understanding their exotic superconductivity. Using point-contact spectroscopy we show that Andreev reflection between an epitaxial thin film of Ba(Fe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08}$)$_2$As$_2$ and a silver tip can be seen in the normal state of the film up to temperature $T\sim1.3T_c$, where $T_c$ is the critical temperature of the superconductor. Andreev reflection far above $T_c$ can be understood only when superconducting pairs arising from strong fluctuation of the phase of the complex superconducting order parameter exist in the normal state. Our results provide spectroscopic evidence of phase-incoherent superconducting pairs in the normal state of the ferropnictide superconductors.

We measured the THz reflectance properties of a high quality epitaxial thin film of the Fe-based superconductor BaFe$_{1.84}$Co$_{0.16}$As$_2$ with T$_c$=22.5 K. The film was grown by pulsed laser deposition on a DyScO$_3$ substrate with an epitaxial SrTiO$_3$ intermediate layer. The measured $R_S/R_N$ spectrum, i.e. the reflectivity ratio between the superconducting and normal state reflectance, provides clear evidence of a superconducting gap $Δ_A$ close to 15 cm$^{-1}$. A detailed data analysis shows that a two-band, two-gap model is absolutely necessary to obtain a good description of the measured $R_S/R_N$ spectrum. The low-energy $Δ_A$ gap results to be well determined ($Δ_A$=15.5$\pm$0.5 cm$^{-1}$), while the value of the high-energy gap $Δ_B$ is more uncertain ($Δ_B$=55$\pm$7 cm$^{-1}$). Our results provide evidence of a nodeless isotropic double-gap scenario, with the presence of two optical gaps corresponding to 2$Δ/kT_c$ values close to 2 and 7.

We report measurements of the field and angular dependences of Jc of truly epitaxial Co-doped BaFe2As2 thin films grown on SrTiO3/(La,Sr)(Al,Ta)O3 with different SrTiO3 template thicknesses. The films show Jc comparable to Jc of single crystals and a maximum pinning force Fp(0.6Tc) > 5 GN/m3 at H/Hirr ~ 0.5 indicative of strong vortex pinning effective up to high fields. Due to the strong correlated c-axis pinning, Jc for field along the c-axis exceeds Jc for H//ab plane, inverting the expectation of the Hc2 anisotropy. HRTEM reveals that the strong vortex pinning is due to a high density of nanosize columnar defects.

Less than two years after the discovery of high temperature superconductivity in oxypnictide LaFeAs(O,F) several families of superconductors based on Fe layers (1111, 122, 11, 111) are available. They share several characteristics with cuprate superconductors that compromise easy applications, such as the layered structure, the small coherence length, and unconventional pairing, On the other hand the Fe-based superconductors have metallic parent compounds, and their electronic anisotropy is generally smaller and does not strongly depend on the level of doping, the supposed order parameter symmetry is s wave, thus in principle not so detrimental to current transmission across grain boundaries. From the application point of view, the main efforts are still devoted to investigate the superconducting properties, to distinguish intrinsic from extrinsic behaviours and to compare the different families in order to identify which one is the fittest for the quest for better and more practical superconductors. The 1111 family shows the highest Tc, huge but also the most anisotropic upper critical field and in-field, fan-shaped resistive transitions reminiscent of those of cuprates, while the 122 family is much less anisotropic with sharper resistive transitions as in low temperature superconductors, but with about half the Tc of the 1111 compounds. An overview of the main superconducting properties relevant to applications will be presented. Upper critical field, electronic anisotropy parameter, intragranular and intergranular critical current density will be discussed and compared, where possible, across the Fe-based superconductor families.

Understanding new superconductors requires high-quality epitaxial thin films to explore intrinsic electromagnetic properties, control grain boundaries and strain effects, and evaluate device applications. So far superconducting properties of ferropnictide thin films appear compromised by imperfect epitaxial growth and poor connectivity of the superconducting phase. Here we report novel template engineering using single-crystal intermediate layers of (001) SrTiO3 and BaTiO3 grown on various perovskite substrates that enables genuine epitaxial films of Co-doped BaFe2As2 with high transition temperature (zero resistivity Tc of 21.5K), small transition widths (delta Tc = 1.3K), superior Jc of 4.5 MA/cm2 (4.2K, self field) and strong c-axis flux pinning. Implementing SrTiO3 or BaTiO3 templates to match the alkaline earth layer in the Ba-122 with the alkaline earth-oxygen layer in the templates opens new avenues for epitaxial growth of ferropnictides on multi-functional single crystal substrates. Beyond superconductors, it provides a framework for growing heteroepitaxial intermetallic compounds on various substrates by matching interfacial layers between templates and thin film overlayers.

We study the effect of 100 MeV Silicon and 200 MeV Gold ion irradiation on the inter and intra grain properties of superconducting thin films of Magnesium Diboride. Substantial decrease in inter-grain connectivity is observed, depending on irradiation dose and type of ions used. We establish that modification of sigma band scattering mechanism, and consequently the upper critical field and anisotropy, depends on the size and directional properties of the extrinsic defects. Post heavy ion irradiation, the upper critical field shows enhancement at a defect density that is five orders of magnitude less compared to neutron irradiation. The critical current density however is best improved through light ion irradiation.

We have studied structural and superconducting properties of MgB2 thin films doped with carbon during the hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition process. A carbon-containing metalorganic precursor bis(cyclopentadienyl)magnesium was added to the carrier gas to achieve carbon doping. As the amount of carbon in the films increases, the resistivity increases, Tc decreases, and the upper critical field increases dramatically as compared to the clean films. The self-field Jc in the carbon-doped films is lower than that in the clean films, but Jc remains relatively high to much higher magnetic fields, indicating stronger pinning. Structurally, the doped films are textured with nano-grains and highly resistive amorphous areas at the grain boundaries. The carbon doping approach can be used to produce MgB2 materials for high magnetic field applications.

Transport measurements at different perpendicular magnetic fields 0 < B < 9 T and temperatures from 5 to 40K reveal TAFF Ohmic resistivity described by the Arrhenius law with the quadratic field dependence of the activation energy. Our transport measurements on bulk MgB_2 ceramic samples also show the TAFF behavior, but do not show the quadratic field dependence of U(T,B). We explain our results in terms of thermally-activated drift of pre-existing quenched dislocations in the vortex lattice. Our results indicate that thermal fluctuations can be essential in determining the irreversibility field in MgB2 though to a much lesser extent than in high-temperature superconductors.

We observe a shift in the magnetic hysteresis loop of the LSMO layer in the same direction as the applied biasing field (positive exchange bias). The effect is not present above the Curie temperature of the SRO layer (), and its magnitude increases rapidly as the temperature is lowered below . The direction of the shift is consistent with an antiferromagnetic exchange coupling between the ferromagnetic LSMO layer and the ferromagnetic SRO layer. We propose that atomic layer charge transfer modifies the electronic state at the interface, resulting in the observed antiferromagnetic interfacial exchange coupling.

We report a significant enhancement of the upper critical field $H_{c2}$ of different $MgB_2$ samples alloyed with nonmagnetic impurities. By studying films and bulk polycrystals with different resistivities $ρ$, we show a clear trend of $H_{c2}$ increase as $ρ$ increases. One particular high resistivity film had zero-temperature $H_{c2}(0)$ well above the $H_{c2}$ values of competing non-cuprate superconductors such as $Nb_3Sn$ and Nb-Ti. Our high-field transport measurements give record values $H_{c2}^\perp (0) \approx 34T$ and $H_{c2}\|(0) \approx 49 T$ for high resistivity films and $H_{c2}(0)\approx 29 T$ for untextured bulk polycrystals. The highest $H_{c2}$ film also exhibits a significant upward curvature of $H_{c2}(T)$, and temperature dependence of the anisotropy parameter $γ(T) = H_{c2}\|/ H_{c2}^\perp$ opposite to that of single crystals: $γ(T)$ decreases as the temperature decreases, from $γ(T_c) \approx 2$ to $γ(0) \approx 1.5$. This remarkable $H_{c2}$ enhancement and its anomalous temperature dependence are a consequence of the two-gap superconductivity in $MgB_2$, which offers special opportunities for further $H_{c2}$ increase by tuning of the impurity scattering by selective alloying on Mg and B sites. Our experimental results can be explained by a theory of two-gap superconductivity in the dirty limit. The very high values of $H_{c2}(T)$ observed suggest that $MgB_2$ can be made into a versatile, competitive high-field superconductor.
