We demonstrated crystal structures, magnetic, optical, and photocatalytic properties of the B-site substituted double perovskite Ba$_{2}$Pr(Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$)O$_{6}$ ($x$=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 and 1.0) synthesized by the citrate pyrolysis method. The single-phase polycrystalline samples with the light Sb substitution crystallized in a monoclinic structure ($I2/m$). Magnetization measurements on all the samples showed that the effective magnetic moments are located around 3 $μ_{B}$ , indicating the valence mixing states between Pr$^{3+}$ and Pr$^{4+}$.The magnitudes of band gap energy for the two end member samples were estimated from the optical measurements to be $E_{g}$ =1.06 eV at $x$=0 and 2.71 eV at $x$=1.0. The Ba$_{2}$Pr(Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$)O$_{6}$ ($x$=0, and 0.1) powders obtained by the present technique exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activities when compared to the same compounds prepared by the conventional solid state method. Our findings suggest that the higher photocatalytic activities strongly depend on powder preparation method as well as the band gaps and charge separation.

We report the magnetism and transport properties of the Heusler compound Fe2+xV1-xAl at -0.10 < x < 0.10 under pressure and a magnetic field. A metal-insulator quantum phase transition occurred at x = -0.05. Application of pressure or a magnetic field facilitated the emergence of finite zero-temperature conductivity around the critical point, which scaled approximately according to the power law. At x < -0.05, a localized paramagnetic spin appeared, whereas above the ferromagnetic quantum critical point at x = 0.05, itinerant ferromagnetism was established. At the quantum critical points at x = -0.05 and 0.05, the resistivity and specific heat exhibited singularities characteristic of a Griffiths phase appearing as an inhomogeneous electronic state.

We report comprehensive studies of the crystallographic, magnetic, and thermal properties of a spinel-type magnetically frustrated compound, CoAl2O4, and a magnetically diluted system,Co1-xZnxAl2O4. These studies revealed the effects of dilution and disorder when the tetrahedral magnetic Co ion was replaced by the nonmagnetic Zn ion. Low-temperature anomalies were observed in magnetic susceptibility at x < 0.6. A multicritical point was apparent at T = 3.4 K and x = 0.12, where the antiferromagnetic, spin glass-like, and paramagnetic phases met. At that point, the quenched ferromagnetic component induced by a magnetic field during cooling was sharply enhanced and was observable below x = 0.6. Around x = 0.6, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat were described by temperature power laws, chi ~ C/T ~ T-d, in accord with the site percolation threshold of the diamond lattice. This behavior is reminiscent of a quantum critical singularity. We propose an x-temperature phase diagram in the range 0 < x < 1 for Co1-xZnxAl2O4. The transition temperature of CoAl2O4 determined from magnetic susceptibility measured under hydrostatic pressure increased with increasing pressure.

We report measurements of the magnetic, transport and thermal properties of the Heusler type compound Fe2VAl0.95. We show that while stoichiometric Fe2VAl is a non-magnetic semi-metal a 5% substitution on the Al-site with the 3d elements Fe and V atoms leads to a ferromagnetic ground state with a Curie temperature TC = 33+-3 K and a small ordered moment ms = 0.12 mB/Fe in Fe2VAl0.95. The reduced value of the ratio ms/mp = 0.08, where mp = 1.4 mB/Fe is the effective Curie-Weiss moment, together with the analysis of the magnetization data M(H,T), show magnetism is of itinerant nature. The specific heat shows an unusual temperature variation at low temperatures with an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient, g = 12 mJK-2mol-1. The resistivity, r(T), is metallic and follows a power law behavior r(T) = r0+AT^n with n = 1.5 below TC. With applying pressure, TC decreases with the rate of (1/TC)(dTC /dP) = -0.061 GPa-1. We conclude substitution on the Al-site with Fe and V atoms results in itinerant ferromagnetism with a low carrier density.

We present studies of the thermal, magnetic and electrical transport properties of reduced polycrystalline Pr_2Ba_4Cu_7O_{15-δ} (Pr247) showing a superconducting transition at Tc = 10 - 16 K and compare them with those of as-sintered non-superconducting Pr247. The electrical resistivity in the normal state exhibited T2 dependence up to approximately 150 K. A clear specific heat anomaly was observed at Tc for Pr247 reduced in a vacuum for 24 hrs, proving the bulk nature of the superconducting state. By the reduction treatment, the magnetic ordering temperature TN of Pr moments decreased from 16 to 11 K, and the entropy associated with the ordering increased, while the effective paramagnetic moments obtained from the DC magnetic susceptibility varied from 2.72 to 3.13 mB. The sign of Hall coefficient changed from positive to negative with decreasing temperature in the normal state of a superconducting Pr247, while that of as-sintered one was positive down to 5 K. The electrical resistivity under high magnetic fields was found to exhibit T^a dependence (a = 0.08 - 0.4) at low temperatures. A possibility of superconductivity in the so-called CuO double chains is discussed.

We report magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements on single-crystalline PrCu2 under hydrostatic pressure, up to 2 GPa, which pressure range covers the pressure-induced Van Vleck paramagnet-to-antiferromagnet transition at 1.2 GPa. The measured anisotropy in the susceptibility shows that in the pressure-induced magnetic state the ordered 4f-moments lie in the ac-plane. We propose that remarkable pressure effects on the susceptibility and resistivity are due to changes in the quadrupolar state of O22 and/or O20 under pressure. We present a simple analysis in terms of the singlet-singlet model.

The momentum(k)-resolving capability of ARPES enables us to identify the s- and p-orbital derived bands predicted from band structure calculations and to successfully measure the superconducting gap on each band. The results show that superconducting gaps with values of 5.5 meV and 2.2 meV open on the s-band and the p-band, respectively, but both the gaps close at the bulk transition temperature, providing a definitive experimental evidence for the two-band superconductivity in MgB2. The experiments validate the role of k-dependent electron-phonon coupling as the origin of multiple-gap superconductivity in MgB2.

The discovery of superconductor in magnesium diboride MgB2 with high Tc (39 K) has raised some challenging issues; whether this new superconductor resembles a high temperature cuprate superconductor(HTS) or a low temperature metallic superconductor; which superconducting mechanism, a phonon- mediated BCS or a hole superconducting mechanism or other new exotic mechanism may account for this superconductivity; and how about its future for applications. In order to clarify the above questions, experiments using the single crystal sample are urgently required. Here we have first succeeded in obtaining the single crystal of this new MgB2 superconductivity, and performed its electrical resistance and magnetization measurements. Their experiments show that the electronic and magnetic properties depend on the crystallographic direction. Our results indicate that the single crystal MgB2 superconductor shows anisotropic superconducting properties and thus can provide scientific basis for the research of its superconducting mechanism and its applications.

We present a detailed structural investigation via neutron diffraction of differently heat treated samples Fe2VAl and Fe2+xV1-xAl. Moreover, the magnetic behaviour of these materials is studied by means of mSR and Mossbauer-experiments. Our structural investigation indicates that quenched Fe2VAl, exhibiting the previously reported "Kondo insulating like" behaviour, is off-stoichiometric (6%) in its Al content. Slowly cooled Fe2VAl is structurally better ordered and stoichiometric, and the microscopic magnetic probes establish long range ferromagnetic order below TC = 13K, consistent with results from bulk experiments. The magnetic state can be modelled as being generated by diluted magnetic ions in a non-magnetic matrix. Quantitatively, the required number of magnetic ions is too large as to be explained by a model of Fe/V site exchange. We discuss the implications of our findings for the ground state properties of Fe2VAl, in particular with respect to the role of crystallographic disorder.
