The realization of spin-glass (S-G) state in Heusler alloys is very rare despite the presence of inherent structural and elemental disorder in those compounds. Although a few half and full Heusler alloys are known to exhibit S-G state, there is hardly any manifestation of the same in cases of quaternary Heusler compounds. Here we report the observation of S-G state in a highly disordered equiatomic quaternary Heusler compound: FeRuMnGa, where the S-G state is in between of canonical S-G and cluster glass. Different intricate features of S-G state including non-equilibrium magnetic dynamics at low temperature in the compound are unveiled through our comprehensive magnetic, heat capacity and neutron diffraction studies. The structural disorder in the sample is neither conventional \textit{A2}- nor \textit{B2}-type while those two types are commonly observed for Heusler compounds. The presence of disorder also plays a significant role in electron transport properties of the alloy, which is reflected in its exhibition of semi-metallic behavior and anomalous Hall effect at low temperature.

The pursuit of efficient spin-polarization in quaternary Heusler alloys with the general formula $XX'YZ$ (where X, $X'$, and Y are transition metals and Z is a p-block element), has been a subject of significant scientific interest. While previous studies shows that isoelectronic substitution of 4d element in place of 3d element in quaternary Heusler alloy, improves the half-metallic ferromagnetic characteristics, our research on the quaternary Heusler alloy NiRuMnSn reveals a strikingly different scenario. In this study, we present a detailed structural analysis of the material using X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and neutron diffraction (ND) techniques, which confirms the formation of a single-phase compound with 50:50 site disorder between Ni/Ru atoms at 4c/4d sites. Contrary to expectations, our DFT calculations suggests a considerable decrease in spin-polarization even in the ordered structure. Additionally, we report on the compound's exceptional behavior, displaying a rare re-entrant spin glass property below $\sim$60 K, a unique and intriguing feature for quaternary Heusler-type compounds.

Canfieldite, Ag$_8$SnS$_6$, is a semiconducting mineral notable for its high ionic conductivity, photosensitivity, and low thermal conductivity. We report the solution growth of large single crystals of Ag$_8$SnS$_6$ of mass up to 1 g from a ternary Ag-Sn-S melt. On cooling from high temperature, Ag$_8$SnS$_6$ undergoes a known cubic (F-43m) to orthorhombic (Pna2$_1$) phase transition at $\approx$ 460 K. By studying the magnetization and thermal expansion between 5-300 K, we discover a second structural transition at $\approx$ 120 K. Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals the low temperature phase adopts a different orthorhombic structure with space group Pmn2$_1$ (a = 7.6629(5) Å, b = 7.5396(5) Å, c = 10.6300(5) Å, Z = 2 at 90 K) that is isostructural to the room temperature forms of the related Se-based compounds Ag$_8$SnSe$_6$ and Ag$_8$GeSe$_6$. The 120 K transition is first-order and has a large thermal hysteresis. Based on magnetization and thermal expansion data, the room temperature polymorph can be kinetically arrested into a metastable state by rapidly cooling to temperatures below 40 K. We lastly compare the room and low temperature forms of Ag$_8$SnS$_6$ with its argyrodite analogues, Ag$_8$TQ$_6$ (T = Si, Ge, Sn; Q = S, Se), and identify a trend relating the preferred structures to the unit cell volume, suggesting smaller phase volume favors the Pna2$_1$ arrangement. We support this picture by showing that the transition to the Pmn2$_1$ phase is avoided in Ge alloyed Ag$_8$Sn$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$S$_6$ samples as well as pure Ag$_8$GeS$_6$.

A systematic study of magnetocrystalline anisotropy is performed for R(La/Ce/Nd)2Fe14B tetragonal compound with the site substitution mechanism. Theoretical calculation suggests the 50% doping with Ce at 4f-site can lead to competitive magnetic anisotropy to that of the champion magnet Nd2Fe14B. Electronic structure calculations are performed using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method by inclusion of the spin-orbit coupling and Hubbard (U) interaction in the calculation for the rare-earth elements to get the correct influence of the localized 4f orbitals. Detailed analysis of the magnetic moment and magnetic anisotropy change has been studied by individually inserting the La and Ce atoms at the two inequivalent sites (4g and 4f sites) of the 2-14-B tetragonal structure. Accurate prediction of the total magnetic moment with the orbital contribution in the 2-14-B structure shows the maximum moment for Ce2Fe14B (3.86 μB/f.u less) compared to Nd2Fe14B. Theoretical analysis confirms that regardless of the anti-parallel spin moment emerging in the Ce atom the complex structure of the Ce substituted compound at 4f-site gives the maximum anisotropy of 2.27 meV/cell with lowering the magnetic moment by 1.26 μB/f.u. compared to the Nd2Fe14B compound.

We explain a profound complexity of magnetic interactions of some technologically relevant gadolinium intermetallics using an ab-initio electronic structure theory which includes disordered local moments and strong $f$-electron correlations. The theory correctly finds GdZn and GdCd to be simple ferromagnets and predicts a remarkably large increase of Curie temperature with pressure of +1.5 K kbar$^{-1}$ for GdCd confirmed by our experimental measurements of +1.6 K kbar$^{-1}$. Moreover we find the origin of a ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic competition in GdMg manifested by non-collinear, canted magnetic order at low temperatures. Replacing 35\% of the Mg atoms with Zn removes this transition in excellent agreement with longstanding experimental data.

Experimental evidence of the anisotropy of the magnetic deflagration associated with the low-temperature first order antiferromagnetic (AFM) --> ferromagnetic (FM) phase-transition in single crystals of Gd5Ge4 is reported. The deflagrations have been induced by controlled pulses of surface acoustic waves (SAW) allowing us to explore both the magnetic field and temperature dependencies on the characteristic times of the phenomenon. The study was done using samples with different geometries and configurations between the SAW pulses and the direction of the applied magnetic field with respect to the three main crystallographic directions of the samples. The effect of temperature is nearly negligible, whereas observed strong magnetic field dependence correlates with the magnetic anisotropy of the sample. Finally, the role of the SAW pulses in both the ignition and formation of the deflagration front was also studied, and we show that the thermal diffusivity of Gd5Ge4 must be anisotropic, following \kappaa>\kappab>\kappac.

Using x-ray powder diffraction technique at various temperatures and applied magnetic fields, we have studied the magnetostructural properties of Ce(Fe0.95Si0.05)2. The x-ray diffraction data establish quantitative relationships between bulk magnetization and the evolution of structurally distinct phases with magnetic field and temperature, and confirm the distinct features of first order phase transition like supercooling and superheating, metastability, and phase co-existence of different structural polymorphs. We observe the lattice volume mismatch across the structural phase transition, which appears to be the cause for the step behavior of the magnetization isotherms at low temperatures. The present study shows that the lattice distortion has to be treated explicitly, like spin, along with the effects of lattice-spin coupling to account for the magnetization behavior of this system. This structure template can resolve the issue of kinetics in this material as observed in different time scale measurements and with different experimental protocols.

We confirm the structure and report the magnetic, thermal, and transport properties of polycrystalline YV4O8 and LuV4O8. A first-order like phase transition is observed at 50 K in both YV4O8 and LuV4O8. The symmetry remains the same with the lattice parameters changing discontinously. The structural transition in YV4O8 leads to partial dimerization of the V atoms resulting in a sudden sharp drop in the magnetic susceptibility. The V spins that do not form dimers order in a canted antiferromagnetic state. The magnetic susceptibility of LuV4O8 shows a sharp peak at ~ 50 K. The magnetic entropies calculated from heat capacity versus temperature measurements indicate bulk magnetic transitions below 90 K for both YV4O8 and LuV4O8.

We present a single crystal neutron diffraction study of the magnetic short-range correlations in Tb$_5$Ge$_4$ which orders antiferromagnetically below the Neel temperature $T_N$ $\approx$ 92 K. Strong diffuse scattering arising from magnetic short-range correlations was observed in wide temperature ranges both below and above $T_N$. The antiferromagnetic ordering in Tb$_5$Ge$_4$ can be described as strongly coupled ferromagnetic block layers in the $ac$-plane that stack along the b-axis with weak antiferromagnetic inter-layer coupling. Diffuse scattering was observed along both $a^*$ and $b^*$ directions indicating three-dimensional short-range correlations. Moreover, the $q$-dependence of the diffuse scattering is Squared-Lorentzian in form suggesting a strongly clustered magnetic state that may be related to the proposed Griffiths-like phase in Gd$_5$Ge$_4$.
