The interpolation method for mean field spin glass models developed by Guerra and Talagrand is extended to a quantum mean field spin glass model. This extension enables us to obtain both replica-symmetric (RS) and one step replica-symmetry breaking (1RSB) solutions of the free energy density in the transverse field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. It is shown that the RS solution is exact in the paramagnetic phase. We provide a sufficient condition on coupling constants where the 1RSB solution gives better bound than the RS one. This condition reduced to physical quantities in disordered single spin systems allows a simple computer-assisted proof for the existence of the de Almeida-Thouless-type instability.

Nishimori's gauge theory is extended to the quantum XYZ $p$-spin glass model in finite dimensions. This enables us to obtain useful correlation equalities, which show also that Duhamel correlation functions at an arbitrary temperature are bounded by those in the corresponding classical model on the Nishimori line. These bounds give that the spontaneous magnetization vanishes in any low temperature even if the model enters the $\mathbb Z_2$-symmetry broken spin glass phase. This theory explains well-known fact from experiments and numerical calculations that the magnetic susceptibility does not diverge in the spin glass transition. The new gauge theory together with the known phase diagram of the Edwards-Anderson model can specify the spin glass region in the coupling constant space of the quantum Heisenberg XYZ spin glass model.

The $\mathbb Z_2$-symmetry breaking and the replica-symmetry breaking are studied in finite and infinite dimensions. Obtained bounds on the expectation of the square of the magnetization and spontaneous magnetization enable us to clarify properties of paramagnetic and spin glass phases. It is proven that variances of ferromagnetic and spin glass order parameters vanish on the Nishimori line in the infinite volume limit. These results imply the self-averaging of these order parameters on the Nishimori line. The self-averaging of the spin glass order parameter rigorously justifies already argued absence of replica-symmetry breaking on the Nishimori line.

First passage time plays a fundamental role in dynamical characterization of stochastic processes. Crucially, our current understanding on the problem is almost entirely relies on the theoretical formulations, which assume the processes under consideration are Markovian, despite abundant non-Markovian dynamics found in complex systems. Here we introduce a simple and physically appealing analytical framework to calculate the first passage time statistics of non-Markovian walkers grounded in a fundamental principle of nonequilibrium statistical physics that connects the fluctuations in stochastic system to the macroscopic law of relaxation. Pinpointing a crucial role of the memory in the first passage time statistics, our approach not only allows us to confirm the non-trivial scaling conjectures for fractional Brownian motion, but also provides a formula of the first passage time distribution in the entire time scale, and establish the quantitative description of the position probability distribution of non-Markovian walkers in the presence of absorbing boundary.

The existence theorem for replica-symmetry breaking (RSB) in the transverse field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model is extended to the model with a general random exchange interactions. The relation between the expectation value of the exchange interaction energy and the Duhamel correlation function of spin operators can be obtained by an approximate integration by parts for general random interactions. In addition to the Falk-Bruch inequality, these explicit evaluations enable us to prove that the variance of overlap between two replica spin operators does not vanish under sufficiently weak transverse field in sufficiently low temperature. The absence of the ferromagnetic long range order is also shown to distinguish RSB from the $\mathbb Z_2$-symmetry breaking.

Energy eigenstates in the random transverse field Edwards-Anderson (EA) model and the random bond quantum Heisenberg XYZ model in a $d$-dimensional finite cubic lattice are obtained for sufficiently weak interactions. The Datta-Kennedy-Kirkwood-Thomas convergent perturbative expansion using the contraction mapping theorem is developed for quantum spin systems with site- and bond-dependent interactions. This expansion enables us to obtain energy eigenstates in the random transverse field free spin model perturbed by sufficiently weak longitudinal exchange interactions. This expansion is useful also for the EA model perturbed by sufficiently weak transverse fields and bond-dependent XY exchange interactions. In these models, their perturbations split the two fold degenerate energy eigenvalues because of the ${\mathbb Z}_2$ symmetry in the unperturbed EA model. It is shown that the energy gap between split energy eigenvalues is exponentially small in the system size. We provide a sufficient condition on the perturbation for absence of level crossing between arbitrary energy eigenstates.

We consider the random-field O($N$) spin model with long-range exchange interactions which decay with distance $r$ between spins as $r^{-d-σ}$ and/or random fields which correlate with distance $r$ as $r^{-d+ρ}$, and reexamine the critical phenomena near the lower critical dimension by use of the perturbative functional renormalization group. We compute the analytic fixed points in the one-loop beta functions, and study their stability. We also calculate the critical exponents at the analytical fixed points. We show that the analytic fixed point which governs the phase transition in the system with the long-range correlations of random fields can be destabilized by the nonanalytic perturbation in both cases where the exchange interactions between spins are short ranged and long ranged. For the system with the long-range exchange interactions and uncorrelated random fields, we show that the $d\to d-σ$ dimensional reduction at the leading order of the $d-2σ$ expansion holds only for $N>2(4+3{\sqrt{3}})\simeq 18.3923\cdots$. Our investigation into the system with the long-range exchange interactions and uncorrelated random fields also gives the value of the boundary between critical behaviors in systems with long-range and short-range exchange interactions, which is identical to that predicted by Sak [Phys. Rev. B {\bf{8}}, 281 (1973)]. For the system with the long-range exchange interactions and the long-range correlated random fields, we show that the $d\to d-σ-ρ$ dimensional reduction does not hold within the present framework, as far as $N$ is finite.

The $x=0.047$ sample exhibits high-temperature incommensurate (HT-ICM), commensurate (CM), and low-temperature incommensurate (LT-ICM) magnetic phases in order of decreasing temperature, whereas the $x=0.12$ sample exhibits only HT-ICM and LT-ICM phases. Here, the CM and LT-ICM phases are ferroelectric and weak-ferroelectric, respectively. Measurements conducted under zero field heating after various field-cooling conditions evidence that the microscopic mechanisms of the spin-driven ferroelectricity in the CM and LT-ICM phases are different: the magnetic chirality of Mn$^{4+}$ cycloidal spins plays a dominant role in the LT-ICM phase, whereas the magnetic exchange striction by the Mn$^{4+}$-Mn$^{3+}$ chain plays a dominant role in the CM phase. The polarization of YMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$ flips upon CM to LT-ICM phase transition because the ferroelectricity driven by the magnetic chirality and the exchange striction provides opposite directions of polarization.

We investigate dimensional reduction, the property that the critical behavior of a system in the presence of quenched disorder in dimension d is the same as that of its pure counterpart in d-2, and its breakdown in the case of the random-field Ising model in which both the interactions and the correlations of the disorder are long-ranged, i.e. power-law decaying. To some extent the power-law exponents play the role of spatial dimension in a short-range model, which allows us to probe the theoretically predicted existence of a nontrivial critical value separating a region where dimensional reduction holds from one where it is broken, while still considering the physical dimension d=3. By extending our recently developed approach based on a nonperturbative functional renormalization group combined with a supersymmetric formalism, we find that such a critical value indeed exists, provided one chooses a specific relation between the decay exponents of the interactions and of the disorder correlations. This transition from dimensional reduction to its breakdown should therefore be observable in simulations and numerical analyses, if not experimentally.

We report on x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies of the paramagnetic (Mn,Co)-co-doped ZnO and ferromagnetic (Fe,Co)-co-doped ZnO nano-particles. Both the surface-sensitive total-electron-yield mode and the bulk-sensitive total-fluorescence-yield mode have been employed to extract the valence and spin states of the surface and inner core regions of the nano-particles. XAS spectra reveal that significant part of the doped Mn and Co atoms are found in the trivalent and tetravalent state in particular in the surface region while majority of Fe atoms are found in the trivalent state both in the inner core region and surface region. The XMCD spectra show that the Fe$^{3+}$ ions in the surface region give rise to the ferromagnetism while both the Co and Mn ions in the surface region show only paramagnetic behaviors. The transition-metal atoms in the inner core region do not show magnetic signals, meaning that they are antiferromagnetically coupled. The present result combined with the previous results on transition-metal-doped ZnO nano-particles and nano-wires suggest that doped holes, probably due to Zn vacancy formation at the surfaces of the nano-particles and nano-wires, rather than doped electrons are involved in the occurrence of ferromagnetism in these systems.

From the experimental results and subsequent cluster-model calculation, we find that the ferromagnetic Mn ion in $β$-MnPc is largely in the $^4$$E$$_g$ ground state arising from the ($e$$_{g}$)$^3$($b$$_{2g}$)$^1$($a$$_{1g}$)$^1$ [($d_{xz,yz}$)$^3$($d_{xy}$)$^1$($d_{z^{2}}$)$^1$] configuration of the Mn$^{2+}$ state. Considering that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of MnPc with the $^4$$E$$_g$ ground state originates from the $a$$_{1g}$ orbital of the Mn$^{2+}$ ion, it is proposed that $a$$_{1g}$-$a$$_{1g}$ exchange coupling via the $π$ orbitals of the phthalocyanine ring plays a crucial role in the ferromagnetism of $β$-MnPc.

The optical properties of pentacene (PEN) and perfluoropentacene(PFP) thin films on various SiO2 substrates were studied using variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry. Structural characterization was performed using X-ray reflectivity and atomic force microscopy. A uniaxial model with the optic axis normal to the sample surface was used to analyze the ellipsometry data. A Strong optical anisotropy was observed and enabled the direction of the transition dipole of the absorption bands to be determined. Furthermore, comparison of the optical constants of PEN and PFP thin films with the absorption spectra of the monomers in solution shows significant changes due to the crystalline environment. Relative to the monomer spectrum the HOMO-LUMO transition observed in PEN (PFP) thin film is reduced by 210 meV (280 meV). Surprisingly, a second absorption band in the PFP thin film shows a slight blueshift (40 meV) compared to the spectrum of the monomer with its transition dipole perpendicular to that of the first absorption band.

We study the stability of fixed points in the two-loop renormalization group for the random field O($N$) spin model in $4+ε$ dimensions. We solve the fixed-point equation in the 1/N expansion and $ε$ expansion. In the large-N limit, we study the stability of all fixed points. We solve the eigenvalue equation for the infinitesimal deviation from the fixed points under physical conditions on the random anisotropy function. We find that the fixed point corresponding to dimensional reduction is singly unstable and others are unstable or unphysical. Therefore, one has no choice other than dimensional reduction in the large-N limit. The two-loop $β$ function enables us to find a compact area in the $(d, N)$ plane where the dimensional reduction breaks down. We calculate higher-order corrections in the 1/N and $ε$ expansions to the fixed point. Solving the corrected eigenvalue equation nonperturbatively, we find that this fixed point is singly unstable also for sufficiently large $N$ and the critical exponents show a dimensional reduction.

We study the critical behavior of a random field O($N$) spin model with a second-rank random anisotropy term in spatial dimensions $4<d<6$, by means of the replica method and the 1/N expansion. We obtain a replica-symmetric solution of the saddle-point equation, and we find the phase transition obeying dimensional reduction. We study the stability of the replica-symmetric saddle point against the fluctuation induced by the second-rank random anisotropy. We show that the eigenvalue of the Hessian at the replica-symmetric saddle point is strictly positive. Therefore, this saddle point is stable and the dimensional reduction holds in the 1/N expansion. To check the consistency with the functional renormalization group method, we obtain all fixed points of the renormalization group in the large $N$ limit and discuss their stability. We find that the analytic fixed point yielding the dimensional reduction is practically singly unstable in a coupling constant space of the given model with large $N$. Thus, we conclude that the dimensional reduction holds for sufficiently large $N$.

A renormalization group for the probability distribution of magnetic impurities is applied. New parameters corresponding to the extra $φ^4$ coupling constants in the replica Hamiltonian are introduced. Although they do not affect the critical phenomena near the upper critical dimension, they can when dimensions are lowered.

We also computed the exponents $ν$ and $η$ by the $ε$ expansion. The results are consistent with the argument of the dimensional reduction at least in the leading order.

We calculate connected correlators in time dependent Gaussian orthogonal and symplectic random matrix ensembles by a diagrammatic method.
We obtain averaged one-point Green's functions in the leading order O(1) and wide two-level and three-level correlators in the first nontrivial order by summing over twisted and untwisted planer diagrams.
