Score-based diffusion models have proven effective in image generation and have gained widespread usage; however, the underlying factors contributing to the performance disparity between stochastic and deterministic (i.e., the probability flow ODEs) sampling schemes remain unclear. We introduce a novel formulation of diffusion models using Feynman's path integral, which is a formulation originally developed for quantum physics. We find this formulation providing comprehensive descriptions of score-based generative models, and demonstrate the derivation of backward stochastic differential equations and loss functions. The formulation accommodates an interpolating parameter connecting stochastic and deterministic sampling schemes, and we identify this parameter as a counterpart of Planck's constant in quantum physics. This analogy enables us to apply the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) expansion, a well-established technique in quantum physics, for evaluating the negative log-likelihood to assess the performance disparity between stochastic and deterministic sampling schemes.

Spin parity effects refer to those special situations where a dichotomy in the physical behavior of a system arises, solely depending on whether the relevant spin quantum number is integral or half-odd integral. As is the case with the Haldane conjecture in antiferromagnetic spin chains, their pursuit often derives deep insights and invokes new developments in quantum condensed matter physics. Here we put forth a simple and general scheme for generating such effects in any spatial dimension through the use of anisotropic interactions, and a setup within reasonable reach of state-of-the-art cold-atom implementations. We demonstrate its utility through a detailed analysis of the magnetization behavior of a specific one-dimensional spin chain model -- an anisotropic antiferromagnet in a transverse magnetic field, unraveling along the way the quantum origin of finite-size effects observed in the magnetization curve that had previously been noted but not clearly understood.

By analyzing linear dichroism in soft x-ray absorption and core-level hard x-ray photoemission spectra, the $4f$ symmetry is determined as $Σ$-type $Γ_{7}$, promoting predominant hybridization with the conducting electrons originating from the Ge site. The band structures probed by the soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission indicates that the Ge $4p$ components contribute to the band renormalization through the anisotropic hybridization effects, suggesting that the control of the electronic structures of Ge orbital gives an impact to achieve the exotic phenomena in CeNi$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$.

Although the stoichiometric cobalt-ferrite is known as an insulating material, it is found that the conductivity of Fe-rich cobalt-ferrites can be controlled by changing the source materials and deposition conditions in the pulsed laser deposition technique. The I-CFO and C-CFO films exhibit PMA through the in-plane lattice distortion. We investigated the Fe-ion-specific valence states in both I-CFO and C-CFO films by Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, and found that the difference in conductivity corresponds to the abundance ratio of Fe2+ state at the octahedral B-site (Oh) in the inverse spinel structure. Furthermore, first-principles calculations reproduce the changes in the density of states at the Fermi level depending on the cation vacancies at the B-site, which explains the difference in the conductivity between I-CFO and C-CFO.

By analyzing the line shapes of the XAS and XMCD spectra, we conclude that, in the dead layers, there are a significant number of vacancies at the $T_d$ sites of the spinel structure, which may be the microscopic origin of the degraded ferrimagnetic order in the $M\text{Fe}_2\text{O}_4$(111) thin films.

Many materials with a high figure of merit ZT have been discovered in anticipation of a high thermoelectric efficiency. However, there has been a lack of investigations on efficiency-based material evaluation, and little is known about the achievable limit of thermoelectric efficiency. Here, we report the highest thermoelectric efficiency using 12,645 published materials. The 97,841,810 thermoelectric efficiencies are calculated using 808,610 device configurations under various heat-source temperatures (T_h) when the cold-side temperature is 300 K, solving one-dimensional thermoelectric integral equations with temperature-dependent thermoelectric properties. For infinite-cascade devices, a thermoelectric efficiency larger than 33% (~1/3) is achievable when T_h exceeds 1400 K. For single-stage devices, the best efficiency of 17.1% (~1/6) is possible when T_h is 860 K. Leg segmentation can overcome this limit, delivering a very high efficiency of 24% (~1/4) when T_h is 1100 K.

We present a path integral formalism for the intrinsic quantum dynamics of magnetic skyrmions coupled to a thermal background of magnetic fluctuations. Upon promoting the skyrmion's collective coordinate $\boldsymbol{R}$ to a dynamic variable and integrating out the magnonic heat bath, we derive the generalized equation of motion for $\boldsymbol{R}$ with a non-local damping term that describes a steady-state skyrmion dynamics at finite temperatures. Being essentially temperature dependent, the intrinsic damping is shown to originate from the coupling of thermally activated magnon modes to the adiabatic potential driven by a rigid skyrmion motion, which can be regarded as another manifestation of emergent electrodynamics inherent to topological magnetic textures. We further argue that the diagonal components of the damping term act as the source of dissipation and inertia, while its off-diagonal components modify the gyrotropic motion of a magnetic skyrmion. By means of numerical calculations for the lattice spin model of chiral ferromagnets, we study the temperature behavior of the intrinsic damping as a function of magnetic field in periodic and confined geometries. The intrinsic damping is demonstrated to be highly non-local, revealing its quantum-mechanical nature, that becomes more pronounced with increasing temperature. At high temperatures when the magnon occupation factors are large, the intrinsic damping is shown to yield a modified Thiele's equation with the additional non-local dissipative and mass terms that exhibit an almost linear temperature behavior. Our results provide a microscopic background for semiclassical magnetization dynamics and establish a framework for understanding spin caloritronics effects in topological magnetic textures.

We investigate the element-specific spin and orbital states and their roles on magnetic anisotropy in the Co-ferrite (Co$_x$Fe$_{3-x}$O$_{4+δ}$ (001)) thin films which exhibit perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). The origin of PMA in the low $x$ region ($x$ $<$ 1) can be mainly explained by the large perpendicular orbital magnetic moments in the Co$^{2+}$ (3$d^7$) states detected by X-ray magnetic circular and linear dichroisms (XMCD/XMLD). The XMLD for a PMA film ($x=0.2$) with square hysteresis curve shows the oblate charge distribution in the Co$^{2+}$ site, which is consistent with the change in local nearest neighbor distance in Co detected by extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis. Our finding reveals that the microscopic origin of PMA in Co-ferrite comes from the enhanced orbital magnetic moments along out-of-plane [001] direction through in-plane charge distribution by tensile strain, which adds the material functionalities in spinel ferrite thin films from the viewpoint of strain and orbital magnetic moments.

The magnetic properties and the electronic excitations of the new diluted magnetic semiconductor Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ have been studied by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Mn $L_{2,3}$ edge. The sum rule analysis of the XMCD spectra yields the net spin moment of $0.45μ_{\text{B}}$/Mn and the small orbital moment of $0.05μ_{\text{B}}$/Mn. This indicates that the Mn atoms are in the high-spin configurations of $d^{5}$, whereas the presence of competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions between the Mn ions reduces the net spin moment. RIXS spectra show broad peaks from 1 to 6 eV energy loss, which originate from the $d$-$d$ crystal field excitations of the Mn ions. Based on a comparison of the RIXS line shapes with those of Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As, we conclude that the ground state of Mn in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ consists not only of the charge-transferred $3d^{5}\underline{L}$ electron configuration ($\underline{L}$: ligand hole) with weakly bound holes as in Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As, but also of the pure $3d^{5}$ configuration with free holes.

Correlation effects on both the Cu and Ru ions can be observed. From the Cu $2p$ core level spectra we deduce the presence of magnetic Cu$^{2+}$ ions hybridized with a reservoir of itinerant electrons. The strong photon energy dependence of the valence band allows us to disentangle the Ru, Cu, and O contributions and thus to optimize the DMFT calculations. The calculated spin and charge susceptibilities show that the transition metal oxide CaCu$_3$Ru$_4$O$_{12}$ must be classified as a Kondo system and that the Kondo temperature is in the range of 500-1000 K.

Based on the density functional theory, we examine the origin of ferromagnetism in the Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ using different types of response theories. We argue that the magnetism of Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ has a dual nature and bears certain aspects of both itineracy and localization. On the one hand, the magnetism is soft, where the local magnetic moments strongly depend on temperature and the angles formed by these moments at different Co sites of the kagome lattice, as expected for itinerant magnets. On the other hand, the picture of localized spins still remains adequate for the description of the local stability of the ferromagnetic (FM) order with respect to the transversal spin fluctuations. For the latter purposes, we employ two approaches, which provide quite different pictures for interatomic exchange interactions: the regular magnetic force theorem and a formally exact theory based on the calculation of the inverse response function. The exact theory predicts Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ to be a three-dimensional ferromagnet with the strongest interaction operating between next-nearest neighbors in the adjacent kagome planes. The ligand states are found to play a very important role by additionally stabilizing the FM order. When the local moments decrease, the interplane interactions sharply decrease, first causing the FM order to become quasi-two-dimensional, and then making it unstable with respect to the spin-spiral order propagating perpendicular to the kagome plane. The latter instability is partly contributed by the states at the Fermi surface and may be relevant to the magnetic behavior of Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ near the Curie temperature. Peculiarities of the half-metallic ferromagnetism in Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ are also discussed.

The van der Waals ferromagnet Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ (CGT) has a two-dimensional crystal structure where each layer is stacked through van der Waals force. We have investigated the nature of the ferromagnetism and the weak perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of CGT by means of X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies of CGT single crystals. The XMCD spectra at the Cr $L_{2,3}$ edge for different magnetic field directions were analyzed on the basis of the cluster-model multiplet calculation. The Cr valence is confirmed to be 3+ and the orbital magnetic moment is found to be nearly quenched, as expected for the high-spin $t_{2g}$$^3$ configuration of the Cr$^{3+}$ ion. A large ($\sim 0.2$ eV) trigonal crystal-field splitting of the $t_{2g}$ level caused by the distortion of the CrTe$_6$ octahedron has been revealed, while the single-ion anisotropy (SIA) of the Cr atom is found to have a sign {\it opposite} to the observed PMA and too weak compared to the reported anisotropy energy. The present result suggests that anisotropic exchange coupling between the Cr atoms through the ligand Te $5p$ orbitals having strong spin-orbit coupling has to be invoked to explain the weak PMA of CGT, as in the case of the strong PMA of CrI$_3$.

Titanium disulfide TiS$_2$, which is a member of the layered transition-metal dichalcogenides with the 1T-CdI$_2$-type crystal structure, is known to exhibit a wide variety of magnetism through intercalating various kinds of transition-metal atoms of different concentrations. Among them, Fe-intercalated titanium disulfide Fe$_x$TiS$_2$ is known to be ferromagnetic with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and large coercive fields ($H_\text{c}$). In order to study the microscopic origin of the magnetism of this compound, we have performed X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements on single crystals of heavily intercalated Fe$_x$TiS$_2$ ($x\sim0.5$). The grown single crystals showed a strong PMA with a large $H_\text{c}$ of $μ_0H_\text{c} \simeq 1.0\ \text{T}$. XAS and XMCD spectra showed that Fe is fully in the valence states of 2+ and that Ti is in an itinerant electronic state, indicating electron transfer from the intercalated Fe atoms to the host TiS$_2$ bands. The Fe$^{2+}$ ions were shown to have a large orbital magnetic moment of $\simeq 0.59\ μ_\text{B}\text{/Fe}$, to which, combined with the spin-orbit interaction and the trigonal crystal field, we attribute the strong magnetic anisotropy of Fe$_x$TiS$_2$.

We propose a new class of tight-binding systems of interacting bosons with a flat band, which are exactly solvable in the sense that one can explicitly write down the unique ground state. The ground state is expressed in terms of local creation operators, and apparently resembles that of a Mott insulator. Based on an exact representation in terms of a classical loop-gas model, we conjecture that the ground state may exhibit quasi Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) or genuine BEC in dimensions two and three or higher, respectively, still keeping Mott insulator-like character. Our Monte Carlo simulation of the loop-gas model strongly supports this conjecture, i.e., the ground state undergoes a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition and exhibits quasi BEC in two dimensions.

Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of the new ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ba,K)(Zn,Mn)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is studied by angle-dependent x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements. The large magnetic anisotropy with the anisotropy field of 0.85 T is deduced by fitting the Stoner-Wohlfarth model to the magnetic-field-angle dependence of the projected magnetic moment. Transverse XMCD spectra highlights the anisotropic distribution of Mn 3$d$ electrons, where the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals are less populated than the $d_{xy}$ state because of the $D_{2d}$ splitting arising from the elongated MnAs$_{4}$ tetrahedra. It is suggested that the magnetic anisotropy originates from the degeneracy lifting of $p$-$d_{xz}$, $d_{yz}$ hybridized states at the Fermi level and resulting energy gain due to spin-orbit coupling when spins are aligned along the $z$ direction.

Recently synthesized Rh-Ni trinuclear complexes hexacoordinated with sulfur ions, 3-aminopropanethiolate (apt) metalloligand [Ni{Rh(apt)$_{3}$}$_{2}$](NO$_{3}$)$_{n}$ ($n$ = 2, 3, 4), are found to be chemically interconvertible between the nominal Ni$^{2+}$ and Ni$^{4+}$ states. In order to clarify the origins of their interconvertible nature and the stability of such a high oxidation state as the tetravalency from the physical point of view, we have systematically investigated the local 3$d$ electronic structures of [Ni{Rh(apt)$_{3}$}$_{2}$](NO$_{3}$)$_{n}$ by means of soft X-ray core-level absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The experimental data have been reproduced by the single-site configuration-interaction cluster-model simulations, which indicate that the charge-transferred configurations are more stable than the nominal $d$-electron-number configuration for $n=3,4$ leading to the prominent charge-transfer effects. These are also supported by S $K$-edge XAS of [Ni{Rh(apt)$_{3}$}$_{2}$](NO$_{3}$)$_{n}$. Our results imply that the found charge-transfer effects have a key role to realize the interconvertible nature as well as the stability of the high oxidization state of the Ni ions.

Recent experiments suggest that Mg condensation at threading dislocations induce current leakage, leading to degradation of GaN-based power devices. To study this issue, we perform first-principles total-energy electronic-structure calculations for various Mg and dislocation complexes. We find that threading screw dislocations (TSDs) indeed attract Mg impurities, and that the electronic levels in the energy gap induced by the dislocations are elevated towards the conduction band as the Mg impurity approaches the dislocation line, indicating that the Mg-TSD complex is a donor. The formation of the Mg-TSD complex is unequivocally evidenced by our atom probe tomography in which Mg condensation and diffusion through [0001] screw dislocations is observed in p-n diodes. These findings provide a novel picture that the Mg being a p-type impurity in GaN diffuses toward the TSD and then locally forms an n-type region. The appearance of this region along the TSD results the reverse leakage current.

SmO thin film is a new Kondo system showing a resistivity upturn around 10 K and was theoretically proposed to have a topologically nontrivial band structure. We have performed hard x-ray and soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy to elucidate the electronic structure of SmO. From the Sm 3$d$ core-level spectra, we have estimated the valence of Sm to be $\sim$2.96, proving that the Sm has a mixed valence. The valence-band photoemission spectra exhibit a clear Fermi edge originating from the Sm 5$d$-derived band. The present finding is consistent with the theory suggesting a possible topological state in SmO and show that rare-earth monoxides or their heterostructures can be a new playground for the interplay of strong electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling.

Room-temperature ferrimagnetism was discovered for the anti-site-disordered perovskite Ca2MnOsO6 with Tc = 305 K. Ca2MnOsO6 crystallizes into an orthorhombic structure with a space group of Pnma, in which Mn and Os share the oxygen-coordinated-octahedral site at an equal ratio without a noticeable ordered arrangement. The material is electrically semiconducting with variable-range-hopping behavior. X-ray absorption spectroscopy confirmed the trivalent state of the Mn and the pentavalent state of the Os. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy reveals that the Mn and Os magnetic moments are aligned antiferromagnetically, thereby classifying the material as a ferrimagnet which is in accordance with band structure calculations. It is intriguing that the magnetic signal of the Os is very weak, and that the observed total magnetic moment is primarily due to the Mn. The Tc = 305 K is the second highest in the material category of so-called disordered ferromagnets such as CaRu1-xMnxO3, SrRu1-xCrxO3, and CaIr1-xMnxO3, and hence, may support the development of spintronic oxides with relaxed requirements concerning the anti-site disorder of the magnetic ions.

It is shown that the ground state of weakly interacting Bose particles in a quasi one-dimensional box trap can be converted into an excited stationary state by an adiabatic cyclic operation that involves a quench of interaction strength: A sharp impurity potential is applied and its strength is varied during the cycle, which induces a nonequilibrium stationary state exhibiting the inversion of population. This process is robust in the sense that the resultant stationary state is almost independent of the details of the cycle, such as the position of the impurity as long as the cycle is far enough from critical regions. The case of the failure of the population inversion due to the strong interparticle interactions is also examined.

An array of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice (Mott insulator) excited to a state where single electron wave-functions spatially overlap would represent a new and ideal platform to simulate exotic electronic many-body phenomena in the condensed phase. However, this highly excited non-equilibrium system is expected to be so short-lived that it has eluded observation so far. Here, we demonstrate the first step toward its realization by exciting high-lying electronic (Rydberg) states of the atomic Mott insulator with a coherent ultrashort laser pulse. Beyond a threshold principal quantum number where Rydberg orbitals of neighboring lattice sites overlap with each other, the atoms efficiently undergo spontaneous Penning ionization resulting in a drastic change of ion-counting statistics, sharp increase of avalanche ionization and the formation of an ultracold plasma. These observations signal the actual creation of exotic electronic states with overlapping wave functions, which is further confirmed by a significant difference in ionization dynamics between a Bose-Einstein condensate and a Mott insulator.

The quantitative analysis of the spectra established that the Co ions are in the formal low-spin tetravalent 3$d^5$ state and that the system is a negative charge transfer Mott insulator. The spin-orbit coupling plays also an important role for the magnetism of the system. At the same time, a trigonal crystal field is present with sufficient strength to bring the 3$d^5$ ion away from the $J_{eff} = 1/2$ state. The sign of this crystal field is such that the $a_{1g}$ orbital is doubly occupied, explaining the absence of a Peierl's transition in this system which consists of chains of face-sharing CoO$_6$ octahedra. Moreover, with one hole residing in the $e_g^π$, the presence of an orbital moment and strong magneto-crystalline anisotropy can be understood. Yet, we also infer that crystal fields with lower symmetry must be present to reproduce the measured orbital moment quantitatively, thereby suggesting the possibility for orbital ordering to occur in BaCoO$_3$.

In this study the metal-insulator transition in the square-lattice Hubbard model at half-filling is revisited in relation to the DOS and spectral functions by means of the ladder dual fermion approximation (LDFA). For this purpose, a new expression of the two-body Green's function in the form of resolvents is proposed, which provides tractable and efficient means to calculate the local vertex function with the Lanczos exact diagonalization (ED) method. This makes it possible to use the Lanczos ED method as a solver of the effective impurity Anderson model for LDFA, opening up the way to access low temperatures for these perturbative extensions of the dynamical mean field theory and to obtain accurate DOS and spectral functions on the real frequency axis by a new variant of the maximum entropy method. It is found that for $U\le 3.5t$, as temperature decreases, the pseudogap formation due to antiferromagnetic correlations in the quasiparticle peak of the spectral function occurs at the X point $[k=(π,0)]$, spreads through the Fermi surface and ends at the M$_2$ point $[k=(π/2,π/2)]$. The almost simultaneous creation of the pseudogap and the loss of the Fermi liquid feature is consistent with that expected in the Slater regime. Although the pseudogap still appears in the quasi-particle-like single peak for $U\ge 4.0t$, the Fermi-liquid feature is partially lost on the Fermi surface already at higher temperatures as expected in the Mott-Heisenberg regime, in which local spins are preformed at high temperatures. A sharp crossover from a pseudogap phase to a Mott insulator at finite $U^{*} \approx 4.7t$ is found to occur below the temperature of the pseudogap formation similar to a previous study with the non-linear $σ$ model approach.

Magnetic anisotropy of epitaxially grown thin films is affected by the strain from the substrates due to a combined effect of distorted electronic structure and spin-orbit interaction (SOI). As an inverse process, one expects an anisotropy of the electronic structure induced by magnetization in the presence of SOI. We have studied the charge-density anisotropy induced by magnetization in thin films of the ferromagnetic metal La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_3$ via x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD). XMLD measurements on thin films with various thicknesses have shown that the XMLD intensity is proportional to the square of the ferromagnetic moment. Using the XMLD sum rule and cluster-model calculation, it has been shown that more Mn 3$d$ electrons are distributed in orbitals elongated along the direction parallel to the spin polarization than in orbitals elongated in the direction perpendicular to it. The cluster-model calculation has shown that the effect of tensile strain from the SrTiO$_3$ substrate on the XMLD spectra is also consistent with the observed XMLD spectral line shapes.

We study the electronic structure and the magnetic properties of epitaxial (Ni1-xCox)Fe2O4(111) layers (x = 0 - 1) with thicknesses d = 1.7 - 5.2 nm grown on Al2O3(111)/Si(111) structures, to achieve a high value of inversion parameter y, which is the inverse-to-normal spinel-structure ratio, and hence to obtain good magnetic properties even when the thickness is thin enough for electron tunneling as a spin filter. We revealed the crystallographic (octahedral Oh or tetrahedral Td) sites and the valences of the Fe, Co, and Ni cations using experimental soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectra and configuration-interaction cluster-model calculation. In all the (Ni1-xCox)Fe2O4 layers with d = about 4 nm, all Ni cations occupy the Ni2+ (Oh) site, whereas Co cations occupy the three different Co2+ (Oh), Co2+ (Td), and Co3+ (Oh) sites with constant occupancies. According to these features, the occupancy of the Fe3+ (Oh) cations decreases and that of the Fe3+ (Td) cations increases with decreasing x. Consequently, we obtained a systematic increase of y with decreasing x and achieved the highest y value of 0.91 for the NiFe2O4 layer with d = 3.5 nm. From the d dependences of y and magnetization in the d range of 1.7 - 5.2 nm, a magnetically dead layer is present near the NiFe2O4/Al2O3 interface, but its influence on the magnetization was significantly suppressed compared with the case of CoFe2O4 layers reported previously [Y. K. Wakabayasi et al., Phys. Rev. B 96, 104410 (2017)], due to the high site selectivity of the Ni cations. Since our epitaxial NiFe2O4 layer with d = 3.5 nm has a high y values (0.91) and a reasonably large magnetization (180 emu/cc), it is expected to exhibit a strong spin filter effect, which can be used for efficient spin injection into Si.

We propose a general way to construct an effective Hamiltonian in the Self-learning Monte Carlo method (SLMC), which speeds up Monte Carlo simulations by training an effective model to propose uncorrelated configurations in the Markov chain. Its applications are, however, limited. This is because it is not obvious to find the explicit form of the effective Hamiltonians. Particularly, it is difficult to make trainable effective Hamiltonians including many-body interactions. In order to overcome this critical difficulty, we introduce the Behler-Parrinello neural networks (BPNNs) as "effective Hamiltonian'' without any prior knowledge, which is used to construct the potential-energy surfaces in interacting many particle systems for molecular dynamics. We combine SLMC with BPNN by focusing on a divisibility of Hamiltonian and propose how to construct the element-wise configurations. We apply it to quantum impurity models. We observed significant improvement of the acceptance ratio from 0.01 (the effective Hamiltonian with the explicit form) to 0.76 (BPNN). This drastic improvement implies that the BPNN effective Hamiltonian includes many body interaction, which is omitted in the effective Hamiltonian with the explicit forms. The BPNNs make SLMC more promising.

Yb$_2$Si$_2$Al may be a prototype for exploring different aspects of the Shastry-Sutherland lattice, formed by planes of orthogonally coupled Yb ions. Measurements of the magnetic susceptibility find incoherently fluctuating Yb$^{3+}$ moments coexisting with a weakly correlated metallic state that is confirmed by measurements of the electrical resistivity. Increasing signs of Kondo coherence are found with decreasing temperature, including an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient and Kadowaki-Woods ratio that signal that the metallic state found at the lowest temperatures is a Fermi liquid where correlations have become significantly stronger. A pronounced peak in the electronic and magnetic specific heat indicates that the coupling of the Yb moments to the conduction electrons leads to an effective Kondo temperature that is approximately 30 K. The valence of Yb$_2$Si$_2$Al has been investigated with electron spectroscopy methods. Yb$_2$Si$_2$Al is found to be strongly intermediate valent ($v_F=2.68(2)$ at 80 K). Taken together, these experimental data are consistent with a scenario where a coherent Kondo lattice forms in Yb$_2$Si$_2$Al from an incoherently fluctuating ensemble of Yb moments with incomplete Kondo compensation, and strong intermediate valence character.

From the sign of the XMCD spectra, it was found that the spin magnetic moment of the Co ion is aligned parallel to the applied magnetic field and that of the V ion anti-parallel to it, consistent with neutron scattering studies. It was revealed that the excess Co ions at the octahedral site take the trivalent low-spin state, and induce a random potential to the V sublattice. The orbital magnetic moment of the V ion is small although finite, suggesting that the ordered orbitals mainly consists of real-number orbitals.

Both substitutions have a strong impact on the unusual high N$\acute{e}$el temperature, $T_N$=28.5\,K, and also the direction of the ordered moment in case of Ir. The substitution dependence of the linear dichroism is weak thus validating the crystal-field description of CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$ being representative for the Re and Ir substituted compounds. The impact of electron- and hole-doping on the hybridization between conduction and 4$f$ electrons is related to the amount of $f^0$ in the ground state and reduction of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. A relationship of $cf$-hybridization strength and enhanced $T_N$ is discussed. The direction and doping dependence of the circular dichroism is in agreement with strong Kondo screening along the crystallographic $a$ direction.

B-site ordered thin films of double perovskite Sr$_2$CoIrO$_6$ were epitaxially grown by a metal-organic aerosol deposition technique on various substrates, actuating different strain states. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and polarized far-field Raman spectroscopy confirm the strained epitaxial growth on all used substrates. Polarization dependent Co $L_{2,3}$ X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals a change of the magnetic easy axis of the antiferromagnetically ordered (high-spin) Co$^{3+}$ sublattice within the strain series. By reversing the applied strain direction from tensile to compressive, the easy axis changes abruptly from in-plane to out-of-plane orientation. The low-temperature magnetoresistance changes its sign respectively and is described by a combination of weak anti-localization and anisotropic magnetoresistance effects.

In this paper we propose new algorithm to reduce autocorrelation in Markov chain Monte-Carlo algorithms for euclidean field theories on the lattice. Our proposing algorithm is the Hybrid Monte-Carlo algorithm (HMC) with restricted Boltzmann machine. We examine the validity of the algorithm by employing the phi-fourth theory in three dimension. We observe reduction of the autocorrelation both in symmetric and broken phase as well. Our proposing algorithm provides consistent central values of expectation values of the action density and one-point Green's function with ones from the original HMC in both the symmetric phase and broken phase within the statistical error. On the other hand, two-point Green's functions have slight difference between one calculated by the HMC and one by our proposing algorithm in the symmetric phase. Furthermore, near the criticality, the distribution of the one-point Green's function differs from the one from HMC. We discuss the origin of discrepancies and its improvement.

We report on our investigation of the electronic structure of Ti$_2$O$_3$ using (hard) x-ray photoelectron and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy. From the distinct satellite structures in the spectra we have been able to establish unambiguously that the Ti-Ti $c$-axis dimer in the corundum crystal structure is electronically present and forms an $a_{1g}a_{1g}$ molecular singlet in the low temperature insulating phase. Upon heating we observed a considerable spectral weight transfer to lower energies with orbital reconstruction. The insulator-metal transition may be viewed as a transition from a solid of isolated Ti-Ti molecules into a solid of electronically partially broken dimers where the Ti ions acquire additional hopping in the $a$-$b$ plane via the $e_g^π$ channel, the opening of which requires the consideration of the multiplet structure of the on-site Coulomb interaction.

We present linear polarization-dependent soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy data at the Ce $M_{4,5}$ edges of Cd and Sn doped CeCoIn$_5$. The 4$f$ ground state wave functions have been determined for their superconducting, antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic ground states. The absence of changes in the wave functions in CeCo(In$_{1-x}$Cd$_x$)$_5$ suggests the 4$f$\,--\,conduction electron ($cf$) hybridization is not affected by globally Cd doping, thus supporting the interpretation of magnetic droplets nucleating long range magnetic order. This is contrasted by changes in the wave function due to Sn substitution. Increasing Sn in CeCo(In$_{1-y}$Sn$_y$)$_5$ compresses the 4$f$ orbitals into the tetragonal plane of these materials, suggesting enhanced $cf$ hybridization with the in-plane In(1) atoms and a homogeneous altering of the electronic structure. As these experiments show, the 4$f$ wave functions are a very sensitive probe of small changes in the hybridization of 4$f$ and conduction electrons, even conveying information about direction dependencies.

We present a version of the Hubbard model with a gapless nearly-flat lowest band which exhibits ferromagnetism in two or more dimensions. The model is defined on a lattice obtained by placing a site on each edge of the hypercubic lattice, and electron hopping is assumed to be only between nearest and next nearest neighbor sites. The lattice, where all the sites are identical, is simple, and the corresponding single-electron band structure, where two cosine-type bands touch without an energy gap, is also simple. We prove that the ground state of the model is unique and ferromagnetic at half-filling of the lower band, if the lower band is nearly flat and the strength of on-site repulsion is larger than a certain value which is independent of the lattice size. This is the first example of ferromagnetism in three dimensional non-singular models with a gapless band structure.

Magnetic anisotropies of ferromagnetic thin films are induced by epitaxial strain from the substrate via strain-induced anisotropy in the orbital magnetic moment and that in the spatial distribution of spin-polarized electrons. However, the preferential orbital occupation in ferromagnetic metallic La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) thin films studied by x-ray linear dichroism (XLD) has always been found out-of-plane for both tensile and compressive epitaxial strain and hence irrespective of the magnetic anisotropy. In order to resolve this mystery, we directly probed the preferential orbital occupation of spin-polarized electrons in LSMO thin films under strain by angle-dependent x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). Anisotropy of the spin-density distribution was found to be in-plane for the tensile strain and out-of-plane for the compressive strain, consistent with the observed magnetic anisotropy. The ubiquitous out-of-plane preferential orbital occupation seen by XLD is attributed to the occupation of both spin-up and spin-down out-of-plane orbitals in the surface magnetic dead layer.

We have successfully observed the XMCD signals for all constitute elements, supporting the spin polarized states at the Fermi level. The Mn $L_{2,3}$ XAS and XMCD spectra are reproduced by the spectral simulation based on density-functional theory (DFT), indicating itinerant character of the Mn 3d states. On the other hand, V $3d$ electrons are rather localized since the ionic model can qualitatively explain the V $L_{2,3}$ XAS and XMCD spectra as well as the local dd excitation revealed by V $L_3$ RIXS.

We report experimentally observed linear dichroism in angle-resolved core-level photoemission spectra of PrIr2Zn20 and PrB6 in cubic symmetry. The different anisotropic 4f charge distributions between the compounds due to the crystalline-electric-field splitting are responsible for the difference in the linear dichroism, which has been verified by spectral simulations with the full multiplet theory for a single-site Pr3+ ion in cubic symmetry. The observed linear dichroism and polarization-dependent spectra in two different photoelectron directions for PrIr2Zn20 are reproduced by theoretical analysis for the Gamma_3 ground state, whereas those of the Pr 3d and 4d core levels indicate the Gamma_5 ground state for PrB6.

We have carried out bulk-sensitive hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) measurements on in-situ cleaved and ex-situ polished SmB6 single crystals. Using the multiplet-structure in the Sm 3d core level spectra, we determined reliably that the valence of Sm in bulk SmB6 is close to 2.55 at ~5 K. Temperature dependent measurements revealed that the Sm valence gradually increases to 2.64 at 300 K. From a detailed line shape analysis we can clearly observe that not only the J=0 but also the J=1 state of the Sm 4f 6 configuration becomes occupied at elevated temperatures. Making use of the polarization dependence, we were able to identify and extract the Sm 4f spectral weight of the bulk material. Finally, we revealed that the oxidized or chemically damaged surface region of the ex-situ polished SmB6 single crystal is surprisingly thin, about 1 nm only.

We studied the local Ru 4d electronic structure of alpha-RuCl3 by means of polarization dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Ru-L2,3 edges. We observed a vanishingly small linear dichroism indicating that electronically the Ru 4d local symmetry is highly cubic. Using full multiplet cluster calculations we were able to reproduce the spectra excellently and to extract that the trigonal splitting of the t2g orbitals is -12 $\pm10$ meV, i.e. negligible as compared to the Ru 4d spin-orbit coupling constant. Consistent with our magnetic circular dichroism measurements, we found that the ratio of the orbital and spin moments is 2.0, the value expected for a Jeff = 1/2 ground state. We have thus shown that as far as the Ru 4d local properties are concerned, alpha-RuCl3 is an ideal candidate for the realization of Kitaev physics.

Epitaxial CoFe2O4/Al2O3 bilayers are expected to be highly efficient spin injectors into Si owing to the spin filter effect of CoFe2O4. To exploit the full potential of this system, understanding the microscopic origin of magnetically dead layers at the CoFe2O4/Al2O3 interface is necessary. In this paper, we study the crystallographic and electronic structures and the magnetic properties of CoFe2O4(111) layers with various thicknesses (thickness d = 1.4, 2.3, 4, and 11 nm) in the epitaxial CoFe2O4(111)/Al2O3(111)/Si(111) structures using soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) combined with cluster-model calculation. The magnetization of CoFe2O4 measured by XMCD gradually decreases with decreasing thickness d and finally a magnetically dead layer is clearly detected at d = 1.4 nm. The magnetically dead layer has frustration of magnetic interactions which is revealed from comparison between the magnetizations at 300 and 6 K. From analysis using configuration-interaction cluster-model calculation, the decrease of d leads to a decrease in the inverse-to-normal spinel structure ratio and also a decrease in the average valence of Fe at the octahedral sites. These results strongly indicate that the magnetically dead layer at the CoFe2O4/Al2O3 interface originates from various complex networks of superexchange interactions through the change in the crystallographic and electronic structures. Furthermore, from comparison of the magnetic properties between d = 1.4 and 2.3 nm, it is found that ferrimagnetic order of the magnetically dead layer at d = 1.4 nm is restored by the additional growth of the 0.9-nm-thick CoFe2O4 layer on it.

We revisit the formulations and simulations of angular distributions in polarization-dependent core-level photoemission spectra of strongly correlated electron systems, in order to explain the recently discovered linear dichroism (LD) in the core-level photoemission of 4f-based rare-earth compounds. Owing to the selection rules for the optical process of core-level excitations, the LD originating from the anisotropic outer localized charge distributions determined by the ground-state orbital symmetry can be observed. Our simulations show that core d-level excitations are essential for the LD in localized ions having a cubic symmetry, which is absent in the p-orbital excitations.

Polar catastrophe at the interface of oxide materials with strongly correlated electrons has triggered a flurry of new research activities. The expectations are that the design of such advanced interfaces will become a powerful route to engineer devices with novel functionalities. Here we investigate the initial stages of growth and the electronic structure of the spintronic Fe3O4/MgO (001) interface. Using soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy we have discovered that the so-called A-sites are completely missing in the first Fe3O4 monolayer. This allows us to develop an unexpected but elegant growth principle in which during deposition the Fe atoms are constantly on the move to solve the divergent electrostatic potential problem, thereby ensuring epitaxy and stoichiometry at the same time. This growth principle provides a new perspective for the design of interfaces.
