Clarifying similarities and differences in physical properties between crystalline and quasicrystalline systems is one of central issues in studying quasicrystals. To contribute to this, we apply multifractal and hyperuniform analyses to nonuniform spatial patterns in the Bose-Hubbard model on the Penrose and Ammann-Beenker tilings. Based on the mean-field approximation, we obtain real-space distributions of boson density and bosonic condensate. In both Mott insulating and superfluid phases, the distributions are hyperuniform. Analyzing the order metric that quantifies the complexity of nonuniform spatial patterns, we find that both quasicrystals show a divergence of the order metric at a phase boundary between the Mott insulating and superfluid phases, in stark contrast to the case of a periodic square lattice. Our results suggest that hyperuniformity is a useful concept to differentiate between crystalline and quasicrystalline bosonic systems. Moreover, we introduce on-site random potentials into these quasicrystalline Bose-Hubbard models, leading to a Bose glass phase. Contrary to the Mott insulating and superfluid phases, we find that the Bose glass phase is multifractal. The same multifractality appears on a Bose glass phase in the periodic square lattice. Therefore, multifractality is common in a Bose glass phase irrespective of the periodicity of systems.

The anomalous transition is characterized by the coexistence of a static order and a frequency-dependent sharp positive anomaly in the 3rd-harmonic susceptibility. Based on the investigation of the reference systems CeCd6 and (Ce0.05Y0.95)Cd6, we speculate that the anomalous transition could be induced by disorder in the possible frustrated Ce-network in the presence of the Kondo effect.

The topological nature of the quasicrystalline system is signified by the Bott index $B$. Topological phase transitions are found to occur, where $B$ changes between 0 and $\pm 1$, as the chemical potential or Zeeman field is varied. In terms of self-consistent solutions, we demonstrate the existence of a Majorana zero mode per edge or vortex when $B=\pm 1$, consistently with the bulk-edge/defect correspondence for periodic systems.

In recent years, quantum computing has evolved as an exciting frontier, with the development of numerous algorithms dedicated to constructing quantum circuits that adeptly represent quantum many-body states. However, this domain remains in its early stages and requires further refinement to understand better the effective construction of highly-entangled quantum states within quantum circuits. Here, we demonstrate that quantum many-body states can be universally represented using a quantum circuit comprising multi-qubit gates. Furthermore, we evaluate the efficiency of a quantum circuit constructed with two-qubit gates in quench dynamics for the transverse-field Ising model. In this specific model, despite the initial state being classical without entanglement, it undergoes long-time evolution, eventually leading to a highly-entangled quantum state. Our results reveal that a diamond-shaped quantum circuit, designed to approximate the multi-qubit gate-based quantum circuit, remarkably excels in accurately representing the long-time dynamics of the system. Moreover, the diamond-shaped circuit follows the volume law behavior in entanglement entropy, offering a significant advantage over alternative quantum circuit constructions employing two-qubit gates.

The topological state of matter is a potential resource to realize long-term fault-tolerant quantum computers beyond the near-term noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices. To achieve the realization, we need a deep understanding of topological behaviors in real quantum computers. However, quantum-circuit algorithms to analyze topological properties have still been insufficient. Here we propose three quantum-circuit algorithms, (i) to find the ground state in the selected parity subspace, (ii) to determine the many-body topological invariant, and (iii) to visualize the zero-energy edge mode. To demonstrate these algorithms, we adopt the interacting Kitaev chain as a typical model of many-body topological superconductors in one dimension. The algorithms are applicable to not only one-dimensional topological superconductors but other topological states including higher-dimensional systems.

Motivated by topological equivalence between an extended Haldane model and a chiral-$π$-flux model on a square lattice, we apply $π$-flux models to two-dimensional bipartite quasicrystals with rhombus tiles in order to investigate topological properties in aperiodic systems. Topologically trivial $π$-flux models in the Ammann-Beenker tiling lead to massively degenerate confined states whose energies and fractions differ from the zero-flux model. This is different from the $π$-flux models in the Penrose tiling, where confined states only appear at the center of the bands as is the case of a zero-flux model. Additionally, Dirac cones appear in a certain $π$-flux model of the Ammann-Beenker approximant, which remains even if the size of the approximant increases. Nontrivial topological states with nonzero Bott index are found when staggered tile-dependent hoppings are introduced in the $π$-flux models. This finding suggests a new direction in realizing nontrivial topological states without a uniform magnetic field in aperiodic systems.

Quasicrystal is now open to search for novel topological phenomena enhanced by its peculiar structure characterized by an irrational number and high-dimensional primitive vectors. Here we extend the concept of a topological insulator with an emerging staggered local magnetic flux (i.e., without external fields), similar to the Haldane's honeycomb model, to the Penrose lattice as a quasicrystal. The Penrose lattice consists of two different tiles, where the ratio of the numbers of tiles corresponds to an irrational number. Contrary to periodic lattices, the periodicity of energy spectrum with respect to the magnetic flux no longer exists reflecting the irrational number in the Penrose lattice. Calculating the Bott index as a topological invariant, we find topological phases appearing in a fractal energy spectrum like the Hofstadter butterfly. More intriguingly, by folding the one-dimensional aperiodic magnetic flux into a two-dimensional periodic flux space, the fractal structure of energy spectrum is extended to higher dimension, whose section corresponds to the Hofstadter butterfly.

Fractionalization of quantum degrees of freedom holds the key to finding new phenomena in physics, e.g., the quark model in hadron physics, the spin-charge separation in strongly-correlated electron systems, and the fractional quantum Hall effect. A typical example of the fractionalization in quantum spin systems is the spin-$1$ Haldane state, whose intriguing characteristics are well described by fractionalized $S=1/2$ virtual spins in a bilinear-biquadratic spin-$1$ chain, the so-called Affleck--Kennedy--Lieb--Tasaki model, delivering two individual spin-$1/2$ degrees of freedom as edge states. Here we theoretically propose an exotic extension of the Haldane state and chirality in a triangular spin tube, inducing a quasi-fractionalization of spin-$1/2$ degree of freedom, i.e., a quarter spin. Existence of the edge state is confirmed both analytically and numerically, combining a low-energy perturbation theory and variational matrix-product state method. Our study can not only propose a new quantum spin property but pave a way to novel quantum states of matter.

Thermoelectric effects have been applied to power generators and temperature sensors that convert waste heat into electricity. The effects, however, have been limited to electrons to occur, and inevitably disappear at low temperatures due to electronic entropy quenching. Here, we report thermoelectric generation caused by nuclear spins in a solid: nuclear-spin Seebeck effect. The sample is a magnetically ordered material MnCO$_{3}$ having a large nuclear spin ($I = 5/2$) of $^{55}$Mn nuclei and strong hyperfine coupling, with a Pt contact. In the system, we observe low-temperature thermoelectric signals down to 100 mK due to nuclear-spin excitation. Our theoretical calculation in which interfacial Korringa process is taken into consideration quantitatively reproduces the results. The nuclear thermoelectric effect demonstrated here offers a way for exploring thermoelectric science and technologies at ultralow temperatures.

We theoretically investigate Majorana zero modes emerging in an anisotropic XY spin chain with second neighbor interactions. The spin chain is mathematically equivalent to the Kitaev chain composing of spinless fermions if only nearest-neighbor interactions are considered. Recent studies on the Kitaev chain with long-ranged interactions, have presented coexistence of several Majorana zero modes. Investigating the topological phase diagram of the anisotropic XY spin chain with second neighbor interactions, we find coexistence of several Majorana zero modes similar to the Kitaev chain. However, we confirm that one of zero modes is restricted into a Hilbert subspace. The mode is regarded as a so-called weak zero mode that should exhibit thermodynamical properties different from a (strong) zero mode appearing in the whole Hilbert space. Since the quantum statistics of spin is the same as a hard-core boson, we expect an experimental realization of the weak mode in not only quantum spin materials but also optical lattices for cold atom systems.

Specifically, we study a two-dimensional electron gas in Penrose and Ammann-Beenker quasicrystals with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, perpendicular Zeeman magnetic field, and conventional $s$-wave superconductivity. We find that topological superconductivity with broken time-reversal symmetry is realized in both Penrose and Ammann-Beenker quasicrystals at low filling, where the Bott index is unity. The topological nature of this phase is confirmed by the existence of a zero-energy surface bound state and the chiral propagation of a wave packet projected onto the midgap bound state along the surfaces. Furthermore, we confirm the existence of a single Majorana zero mode each in a vortex at the center of the system and along the surfaces, signifying the non-Abelian character of the system when the Bott index is unity.

In contrast, one-half spin systems are more designable due to recent progress on intended synthesis of organic materials, quantum dots, and optical lattices. Here we propose a concept to design the Haldane state with one-half spins by making use of a chain composed of one-half spin clusters. If the clusters contains two spins, the ground state of a chain corresponds to the Affleck--Kennedy--Lieb--Tasaki state. In the case of an odd number of spins in the clusters, we propose a concrete procedure to construct a field-induced Haldane state. We illustrate the procedure with a 5-spin cluster chain.

We present a reentrant phase transition in a bridging model between two different topological models: Kitaev and Haldane chains. This model is activated by introducing a bond alternation into the Kitaev chain [A. Yu Kitaev, Phys.-Usp. {\bf 44} 131 (2001)]. Without the bond alternation, finite pairing potential induces a topological state defined by zero-energy Majorana edge mode, while finite bond alternation without the pairing potential makes a different topological state similar to the Haldane state, which is defined by local Berry phase in the bulk. The topologically-ordered state corresponds to the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger state, which is classified as the same symmetry class. We thus find a phase transition between the two topological phases with a reentrant phenomenon, and extend the phase diagram in the plane of the pairing potential and the bond alternation by using three techniques: recursive equation, fidelity, and Pfaffian. In addition, we find that the phase transition is characterized by both the change of the position of Majorana zero-energy modes from one edge to the other edge and the emergence of a string order in the bulk, and that the reentrance is based on a sublattice U(1) rotation. Consequently, our study and model do not only open a direct way to discuss the bulk and edge topologies, but demonstrate an example of the reentrant topologies.

This paper is the first report on its magnetic phase diagram. Using the variational matrix-product state method, we accurately determine phase boundaries. Several kinds of magnetization plateaux are induced by the frustration and the strong correlation among quasi-particles on a lattice. The appropriate description of quasi-particles and their relevant interactions are changed by a magnetic field. We find that the frustration differentiates the triplet quasi-particle from the singlet one in kinetic energy.

The topological phase diagram with respect to Fibonacci potentials follow a self-similar fractal structure characterized by the box-counting dimension, which is an example of the interplay of fractal and topology like the Hofstadter's butterfly in quantum Hall insulators.

Spin-1/2 compounds A3Cu3AlO2(SO4)4 (A=K, Rb, and Cs) have one-dimensional (1D) inequilateral diamond chains. We analyze the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and determine the magnetic exchange interactions. In contrast to the azurite, a dimer is formed on one of the sides of the diamond. From numerical analyses of the proposed model, we find that the dimer together with a nearly isolated 1D Heisenberg chain characterizes magnetic properties including magnetization curve and magnetic excitations. This implies that a dimer-monomer composite chain without frustration is a good starting point for describing these compounds.

In the Ce $L_3$-edge XAS, mixed valence of Ce was found in the $x=0.0$ sample and the F-doping suppresses it, which is consistent with the results on polycrystalline samples. As for the resonant PES, we found that the Ce $4f$ electrons in both $x=0.0$ and $0.5$ systems respectively form a flat band at 1.0 eV and 1.4 eV below the Fermi level and there is no contribution to the Fermi surfaces. Interestingly, Ce valence in CeOBiS$_2$ deviates from Ce$^{3+}$ even though Ce $4f$ electrons are localized, indicating the Ce valence is not in a typical valence fluctuation regime. We assume that localized Ce $4f$ in CeOBiS$_2$ is mixed with the unoccupied Bi $6p_z$, which is consistent with the previous local structural study. Based on the analysis of the Ce $L_3$-edge XAS spectra using Anderson's impurity model calculation, we found that the transfer integral becomes smaller increasing the number of Ce $4f$ electrons upon the F substitution for O.

In the model, cubic symmetry ($m\bar{3}$) of the approximately-regular icosahedra plays a key role in the peculiar magnetic structure determined by a neutron diffraction experiment. Our magnetic model does not only explain magnetic behaviors in the quasicrystal approximants, but also provides a good starting point for the possibility of coexistence between magnetic long-range order and aperiodicity in quasicrystals.

The quasi-spin correlations in a frustrated quantum spin ladder with one-half magnetization are theoretically studied by using the density-matrix renormalization-group method and the quasi-spin transformation. In this model, the frustration induces a gapless-to-gapful phase transition with a strong rung coupling. The gapful state is observed as the one-half magnetization plateau in the magnetization curve. In the magnetization-plateau state, we find that the quasi-spin dimer has a large expectation value with long-ranged correlations. This result does not only comes in useful to clarify the magnetization-plateau state, but gives a crucial information to understand the magnetization curve of the real compound BiCu$_2$PO$_6$, whose effective spin model corresponds to ours.

However, the Mn$^{3+}$ component in the $x$ = 0.00 sample gradually increases with the bulk sensitivity of the experiment, indicating that the Jahn-Teller active Mn$^{3+}$ ions are introduced in the bulk due to the site exchange between Li and Ni. The Mn$^{3+}$ component gets negligibly small in the $x$ = 0.05 sample, which indicates that the excess Li suppresses the site exchange and removes the Jahn-Teller active Mn$^{3+}$.

The quantum phase transitions induced by a magnetic field are theoretically studied in a frustrated two-leg spin ladder. Using the density-matrix renormalization-group method, we find some magnetic phase transitions and plateaux in two different cases of strong and weak rung couplings. With the strong rung coupling, the three magnetization plateaux are found at 1/3, 1/2, and 2/3 due to the frustration. Those can be understood in terms of a quasi-spinon reconstructed from the singlet and the triplets of spins on a rung. The plateau at 1/2 corresponds to the valence bond solid of the quasi-spinons, while the plateaux at 1/3 and 2/3 can be associated with the array of quasi-spinons such as soliton lattice. This is different from the usual Bose-Einstein-condensation picture of triplons. Our results will be useful to understand magnetization curves in BiCu$_2$PO$_6$.

The magnetization curve in a frustrated two-leg spin-ladder system is theoretically studied using both analytical and numerical methods. This spin system is mapped onto a hard-core boson system, which is composed of bond-operators describing the triplon excitation. By the analytical method using the mean-field theory on the bond-operators, we show that cusp singularities emerge in the magnetization curve as a function of a magnetic field due to the strong frustration. This originates from a change of number of Fermi points in the bosonic dispersion relation with the applied field. It is analogous to Lifshitz transition. This singularity is clarified by numerical calculation with the density-matrix renormalization-group method. Our results will be useful to understand the magnetization process observed in the frustrated two-leg spin-ladder compound BiCu2PO6.

The Ce $L_3$-edge XAS spectrum of CeOBiS$_2$ exhibits coexistence of $4f^1$ (Ce$^{3+}$) and $4f^0$ (Ce$^{4+}$) state transitions revealing Ce mixed valency in this system. The spectral weight of the $4f^0$ state decreases with the F-doping and completely disappears for $x>0.4$ where the system shows the superconductivity and the ferromagnetism. The results suggest that suppression of Ce-S-Bi coupling channel by the F-doping appears to drive the system from the valence fluctuation regime to the Kondo-like regime, leading to the coexistence of the superconducting BiS$_2$ layer and the ferromagnetic CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ layer.

ARPES results clearly show a cylindrical (almost two-dimensional) Fermi surface around the zone center. Near the zone boundary, the cylindrical Fermi surface is truncated into several pieces in a complicated manner with strong three-dimensionality. The XPS result and the band structure calculation indicate that the strong Te 5p-Te 5p hybridization between the IrTe2 triangular lattice layers is responsible for the three-dimensionality of the Fermi surfaces and the intervening of the Fermi surfaces observed by ARPES.

The Fermi surfaces of the substituted system are qualitatively similar to the band structure calculations for the undistorted IrTe$_2$ with an upward chemical potential shift due to electron doping. A combination of the ARPES and the band structure calculations indicates that the Te $5p$ spin-orbit interaction removes the $p_x/p_y$ orbital degeneracy and induces $p_x \pm ip_y$ type spin-orbit coupling near the A point. The inner and outer Fermi surfaces are entangled by the Te $5p$ and Ir $5d$ spin-orbit interactions which may provide exotic superconductivity with singlet-triplet mixing.

On the other hand, local compression of RuO$_6$ octahedron in a paramagnetic metal Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ induces global antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic states. This result is consistent with a recent systematic $μ$SR study by Carlo {\it et al.} which has revealed the static antiferromagnetic order at low temperature in the Sr-rich region.

We theoretically study the magnetic excitations in a frustrated two-leg spin-ladder system, in which antiferromagnetic exchange interactions act on the nearest-neighbor and next-nearestneighbor bonds in the leg direction, and on the nearest-neighbor bonds in the rung direction. A dynamical spin correlation function at zero temperature is calculated by using the dynamical density-matrix renormalization-group method for possible magnetic phases, i.e., columnar-dimer and rung-singlet phases. The columnar-dimer phase is characterized by multi-spinon excitations with spin gap, while the rung-singlet phase is dominated by the triplet excitation in the rung direction. It is found that a major difference between these two phases appears in the spectral weight of magnetic excitations, in particular, of the bonding and anti-bonding modes in the rung direction. Therefore, we can distinguish one phase from the other by the difference of the spectral weight. Furthermore, we examine frustration effect on both modes in the rung-singlet phase with a perturbation theory from the strong coupling limit. It is shown that the anti-bonding mode is stable against the frustration, and a wavenumber with minimum excitation energy is shifted from the commensurate to incommensurate ones. On the other hand, the bonding mode is merged into the continuum excitation of multiple triplet excitations by increasing the frustration. By comparing our results with inelastic neutron scattering experiments for BiCu$_2$PO$_6$, the magnitude of the magnetic exchange interactions and the ground state will be determined.

We study spin chirality for a spin-1/2 zigzag XY chain at low temperature by applying a low-temperature density-matrix renormalization group technique. We calculate temperature dependence of dynamical and static correlations of the chirality. In a chiral phase, chiral long-range order at zero temperature disappears at finite temperature, consistent with the fact that there is no long-range order at finite temperature in one-dimensional systems with short-range interactions. In a dimer phase next to the chiral phase, we find an enhancement of static chiral correlation as well as spin correlation with increasing temperature. The enhancement corresponds to the increase of spectral weight inside a gap in the dynamical chiral-correlation function. This temperature-induced chiral correlation is a demonstration of the presence of a chiral state in excited states.

Our density functional theory-based calculations results show that, in contrast to the zigzag edge [cf., e-J. Surf. Sci. Nanotech. 2 (2004) 77], regardless of orientation, there is an activation barrier hindering H_2 dissociation at the armchair edges. And once they do get dissociatively adsorbed at the armchair edges, we find that it would be extremely hard to desorb the H from their adsorption sites at the armchair edges. Furthermore, we also found that, consistent with our earlier conclusions [cf., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 72 (2003) 1867], it is unlikely that we would find a whole H_2 in between plain graphite sheets.
