Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is widely used to build optoelectronic devices. However, as a hygroscopic water-based acidic material, it brings major concerns for stability and degradation, resulting in an intense effort to replace it in organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices. In this work, we focus on the perfluorinated ionomer (PFI) polymeric additive to PEDOT:PSS. We demonstrate that it can reduce the relative amplitude of OPV device burn-in, and find two distinct regimes of influence. At low concentrations there is a subtle effect on wetting and work function, for instance, with a detrimental impact on the device characteristics, and above a threshold it changes the electronic and device properties. The abrupt threshold in the conducting polymer occurs for PFI concentrations greater than or equal to the PSS concentration and was revealed by monitoring variations in transmission, topography, work-function, wettability and OPV device characteristics. Below this PFI concentration threshold, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of OPVs based on poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl):[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM) are impaired largely by low fill-factors due to poor charge extraction. Above the PFI concentration threshold, we recover the PCE before it is improved beyond the pristine PEDOT:PSS layer based OPV devices. Supplementary to the performance enhancement, PFI improves OPV device stability and lifetime. Our degradation study leads to the conclusion that PFI prevents water from diffusing to and from the hygrosopic PEDOT:PSS layer, which slows down the deterioration of the PEDOT:PSS layer and the aluminum electrode. These findings reveal mechanisms and opportunities that should be taken into consideration when developing components to inhibit OPV degradation.

We demonstrate that blending fluorinated molecules in PEDOT:PSS hole transport layers (HTL) induces charge transfers which impact on both charge extraction and photogeneration within organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices. OPVs fabricated with modified HTL and two photoactive polymer blends led systematically to power conversion efficiencies (PCE) increases, with PTB7:PC70BM blend exhibiting PCE of ~ 8.3 %, i.e. ~ 15 % increase compared to pristine HTL devices. A reduced device-to-device characteristics variations was also noticed when fluorinated additives were used to modify the PEDOT:PSS. Shading lights onto the effect of HTL fluorination, we show that the morphology of the polymer:PCBM blends remains surprisingly unaffected by the fluorinated HTL surface energy but that, instead, the OPVs are impacted not only by the HTL electronic properties (work function, dipole layer, open circuit voltage, charge transfer dynamic) but also by alteration of the complex refractive indices (photogeneration, short circuit current density, external quantum efficiencies, electro-optic modelling). Both mechanisms find their origin in fluorination induced charge transfers. This work points towards fluorination as a promising strategy toward combining both external quantum efficiency modulation and power conversion efficiency enhancement in OPVs. Charge transfers could also be used more broadly to tune the optical constants and electric field distribution, as well as to reduce interfacial charge recombinations within OPVs.

In a low-temperature study with a scanning tunneling microscope (STM), the irreducible lateral motion of a CO molecule adsorbed on a Si(001) surface showed a hyperlinear dependence on the tunneling current. This dependence implies that the adsorbate displacement is caused by multiple excitations of adsorbate vibration modes, a situation thus far observed only at metal surfaces. The local vibronic temperature at the atomic scale on the surface heated by ohmic inelastic scattering of tunneling electrons indicates that there is an activation barrier of 0.11 eV for the irreversible motion of CO, in agreement with the adiabatic potential obtained from first-principles calculation. The highly efficient local heating is caused by a mid-gap state at the surface induced by the electric field of the STM tip.

We study the steady state of the two-species Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (ASEP) with open boundary conditions. The matrix product method works for the determination of the stationary probability distribution. Several physical quantities are calculated through an explicit representation for the matrix products. By making full use of the relation with the continuous big q-Hermite polynomials, we arrive at integral formulae for the partition function and the n-point functions. We examine the thermodynamic limit and find three phases: the low-density phase, the high-density phase and the maximal current phase.

We study the A_k generalized model of the O(1) loop model on a cylinder. The affine Hecke algebra associated with the model is characterized by a vanishing condition, the cylindric relation. We present two representations of the algebra: the first one is the spin representation, and the other is in the vector space of states of the A_k generalized model. A state of the model is a natural generalization of a link pattern. We propose a new graphical way of dealing with the Yang-Baxter equation and $q$-symmetrizers by the use of the rhombus tiling. The relation between two representations and the meaning of the cylindric relations are clarified. The sum rule for this model is obtained by solving the q-KZ equation at the Razumov-Stroganov point.

Abstract:
Matrix generalization of the inverse scattering method is developed to solve the multicomponent nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonvanishing boundary conditions. It is shown that the initial value problem can be solved exactly. The multi-soliton solution is obtained from the Gel'fand--Levitan--Marchenko equation.

We study dark soliton solutions of a multi-component Gross--Pitaevskii equation for hyperfine spin F=1 spinor Bose--Einstein condensate. The interactions are supposed to be inter-atomic repulsive and anti-ferromagnetic ones of equal magnitude. The solutions are obtained from those of an integrable $2\times 2$ matrix nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonvanishing boundary conditions. We investigate the one-soliton and two-soliton solutions in detail. One-soliton is classified into two kinds. The ferromagnetic state has wavefunctions of domain-wall shape and its total spin is nonzero. The polar state provides a hole soliton and its total spin is zero. These two states are selected by choosing the type of the boundary conditions. In two-soliton collisions, we observe the spin-mixing or spin-transfer. It is found that, as "magnetic" carriers, solitons in the ferromagnetic state are operative for the spin-mixing while those in the polar are passive.
