We report the detailed analysis of temperature dependent neutron diffraction pattern of the Cr$_2$CoAl inverse Heusler alloy and unveil the magnetic structure up to the phase transition as well as its fully compensated ferrimagnetic nature. The Rietveld refinement of the diffraction pattern using the space group I$\bar4${\it m}2 confirm the inverse tetragonal structure over the large temperature range from 100~K to 900~K. The refinement of the magnetic phase considering the wave vector $k=$ (0, 0, 0) reveals the ferrimagnetic nature of the sample below 730$\pm$5~K. This transition temperature is obtained from empirical power law fitting of the variation in the ordered net magnetic moment and intensity of (110) peak as a function of temperature. The spin configuration of the microscopic magnetic structure suggests the nearly fully compensated ferrimagnetic behavior where the magnetic moments of Cr2 are antiparallel with respect to the Cr1, and Co moments. Moreover, the observed anomaly in the thermal expansion and lattice parameters at 730$\pm$5~K suggest that the distortion in crystal structure may play an important role in the magnetic phase transition.

Skyrmions are topologically protected quantum objects at the nanometre scale. They form perpendicular to an applied magnetic field at a certain temperature and arrange themselves in a typically hexagonal lattice. Using small angle neutron scattering we have determined the magnetic field versus temperature phase diagrams of the stability range of the different magnetic phases, the helical as well as the skyrmion phases in the multiferroic skyrmion material Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. Therefore, a single crystal was mounted in different crystal orientations, i.e. unoriented and with the crystallographic $\langle1 1 0\rangle$ and $\langle1 0 0\rangle$ axis aligned parallel to the magnetic field. Furthermore, different cooling procedures were tested, cooling from the paramagnetic phase at zero magnetic field and field cooling through the skyrmion phase where metastable skyrmions are nucleated. From this, not only were the stability ranges of both the helical and skyrmion phases in this multiferroic skyrmion material determined, but the length of the spin helix and the skyrmion distances at different conditions was also determined through detailed analysis of the positions of the observed Bragg peaks. The obtained data provide valuable information about the scaling of the skyrmion distances and therefore their packing density. The knowledge about this tunability will serve as an important input for the theoretical understanding of the formation of skyrmions. Concerning technological applications, for example as high-density data storage devices in information technology, the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the packing density of skyrmions is of critical importance for their design. Therefore, the obtained knowledge is an essential input for future skyrmionics applications in high-density data storage, in low-energy spintronics or in skyrmionics quantum computation.

We investigate the electronic and magnetic properties as well as lattice dynamics and spin-phonon coupling of $β$-Na$_{0.33}$V$_2$O$_5$ using temperature-dependent Raman scattering, dc-magnetization and dc-resistivity, x-ray photoemission, and absorption spectroscopy. The Rietveld refinement of XRD pattern with space group C2/m confirms the monoclinic structure. The analysis of temperature-dependent Raman spectra in a temperature range of 13--673~K reveals an anharmonic dependence of the phonon frequency and full width at half maximum, which is accredited to the symmetric phonon decay. However, below about 40 K, the hardening of the phonon frequency beyond anharmonicity is attributed to the spin-phonon coupling. Interestingly, the estimated effective magnetic moment $μ_{\rm eff}=$ 0.63~$μ_B$ from the magnetization data manifests a mixed-valence state of V ions in 4+ (18$\pm$1\%) and 5+ (82$\pm$1\%). A similar ratio of V$^{4+}$ to V$^{5+}$ is also observed in the x-ray photoemission and x-ray absorption near-edge spectra and that is found to be consistent with the sample stoichiometry. In addition, the V$^{4+}$ ions are distributed between different vanadium (V1 and V3) sites. The analysis of extended x-ray absorption fine structure at different V-sites gives the corresponding V--O bond lengths, which are utilized in the assignment of Raman modes. Moreover, the temperature-dependent resistivity resembles a semiconducting behavior where the charge carrier transport is facilitated by the band conduction at higher temperatures and via hopping $\le$260~K.

Due to the complex interactions between rare-earth elements and transition metals, as well as/or themselves, rare-earth transition-metal oxides are likely to exhibit highly intriguing and novel magnetic structures and dynamic behaviours. Rare-earth elements in these compounds frequently demonstrate unusual behaviours in their crystal-field (CF) excitations, which necessitate thorough research for in-depth comprehensions. When cooling from 10 K to 1.5 K via the magnetic ordering temperature of Er3+ at 4.1 K, we observed a significant energy shift of the low-lying CF excitation of Er3+ in ErFeO3 from 0.35 meV to 0.75 meV utilizing the inelastic neutron-scattering technique. A sound CF model was proposed for Er3+ in ErFeO3 by fitting to the observed CF excitation peaks, which enables to explain all the observed experimental results in a very consistent manner. According to the model, the ground crystal field level of Er3+, which corresponds to the lowest Kramers doublet supposed to be at zero energy, has been shifted by the internal magnetic fields induced by both Er3+ and Fe3+ spin orders below and above the Er3+ ordering temperature, respectively. Additional measurements in various magnetic fields offer compelling evidence in favour of this hypothesis. The measured external field dependence of the CF excitation energy led to the derivation of the internal field of Er3+ as 0.33 meV, which is strongly corroborated by theoretical modelling. Additionally, the effective g-factor for Er3+ in ErFeO3 showed an exceptionally significant anisotropy.

The precise crystal symmetry and hence the emergence of the electric polarization still remains an open question in the multiferroic materials $R$Mn$_2$O$_5$ ($R$ = rare-earth, Bi, Y). While previous diffraction studies have indicated that $R$Mn$_2$O$_5$ possesses the centro-symmetric space group P$bam$, an atomic displacement allowing for the electric polarization would require a non-centrosymmetric crystal symmetry. Our single crystal neutron diffraction experiments on TbMn$_2$O$_5$ provide direct evidence of a reduced crystallographic symmetry already above the magnetic and ferroelectric phase transitions and a change in magnetic order upon entering the ferroelectric phase. This is indicated through the presence of additional nuclear Bragg reflections that are otherwise forbidden for the space group P$bam$ but are in good agreement with the polar space group P$12_11$. It implies that the exchange-striction, which arises from a symmetric $S_i \cdot S_j$ spin coupling, is the dominating mechanism for the generation of the electric polarization in the commensurate magnetic phase of TbMn$_2$O$_5$. Furthermore, the commensurate magnetic reflections are in accordance with a quartile step spin-spiral along the $c$-axis. Therefore, the antisymmetric $S_i \times S_j$ exchange via the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction contributes as well and becomes the leading term in the low temperature incommensurate spin-spiral magnetic phase. These new findings provide important information for the understanding of the complex interplay between the magnetic and the structural order throughout the $R$Mn$_2$O$_5$ series of type-II multiferroics.

Crystal-field excitations, for example in transition-metal oxides where a rare-earth element is used as a spacer between the transition-metal-oxide tetrahedra and octahedra, are assumed to be extremely robust with respect to external perturbations such as temperature. Using inelastic neutron scattering experiments, a giant shift of the energy of the lowest crystal-field excitation of Er3+ (4I15/2) in ErFeO3 from 0.30(2) meV to 0.75(2) meV was measured below the magnetic-ordering temperature of erbium at 4.1 K. Quantum-mechanical point-charge calculations of the crystal-field levels indicate that the shift is caused by the internal magnetic field created by the erbium spins themselves, which causes a Zeeman splitting of the erbium 4f electronic levels, and therefore a change in the energies of crystal-field transitions. To verify this explanation, the effect of an external magnetic field on the crystal-field excitations was measured by inelastic neutron scattering and compared to the field-dependent point-charge calculations. The existence of an internal magnetic exchange interaction will have implications for a deeper understanding of a broader group of phenomena such as multiferroic properties or spin frustration, which are a consequence of various competing electronic and magnetic exchange interactions.

We report the structural, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties of Co$_2$Cr$_{1-x}$Ti$_x$Al ($x=$ 0--0.5) Heusler alloys for spintronic and magnetic refrigerator applications. Room temperature X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction patterns along with Rietveld refinements confirm that the samples are of single phase and possess a cubic structure. Interestingly, magnetic susceptibly measurements indicate a second order phase transition from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic where the Curie temperature (T$_{\rm C}$) of Co$_2$CrAl increases from 330~K to 445~K with Ti substitution. Neutron powder diffraction data of the $x=$ 0 sample across the magnetic phase transition taken in a large temperature range confirm the structural stability and exclude the possibility of antiferromagnetic ordering. The saturation magnetization of the $x=$ 0 sample is found to be 8000~emu/mol (1.45~$μ_{\rm B}$/{\it f.u.}) at 5~K, which is in good agreement with the value (1.35$\pm$0.05~$μ_{\rm B}$/{\it f.u.}) obtained from the Rietveld analysis of the neutron powder diffraction pattern measured at temperature of 4~K. By analysing the temperature dependence of the neutron data of the $x=$ 0 sample, we find that the change in the intensity of the most intense Bragg peak (220) is consistent with the magnetization behavior with temperature. Furthermore, an enhancement of change in the magnetic entropy and relative cooling power values has been observed for the $x=$ 0.25 sample. Interestingly, the critical behavior analysis across the second order magnetic phase transition and extracted exponents ($β\approx$ 0.496, $γ\approx$ 1.348, and $δ\approx$ 3.71 for the $x=$ 0.25 sample) suggest the presence of long-range ordering, which deviates towards 3D Heisenberg type interactions above T$_{\rm C}$, consistent with the interaction range value $σ$.

The low-energy magnetic excitation from the highly Ca-doped quasi-one-dimensional magnet SrCa13Cu24O41 was studied in the magnetic ordered state by using inelastic neutron scattering. We observed the gapless spin-wave excitation, dispersive along the a and c axes but nondispersive along the b axis. Such excitations are attributed to the spin wave from the spin-chain sublattice. Model fitting to the experimental data gives the nearest-neighbour interaction Jc as 5.4 meV and the interchain interaction Ja = 4.4 meV. Jc is antiferromagnetic and its value is close to the nearest-neighbour interactions of the similar edge-sharing spin-chain systems such as CuGeO3. Comparing with the hole-doped spin chains in Sr14Cu24O41, which shows a spin gap due to spin dimers formed around Zhang-Rice singlets, the chains in SrCa13Cu24O41 show a gapless excitation in this study. We ascribe such a change from gapped to gapless excitations to holes transferring away from the chain sublattice into the ladder sublattice upon Ca doping.

We report the structural, transport, electronic, and magnetic properties of Co$_2$FeGa Heusler alloy nanoparticles. The Rietveld refinements of x-ray diffraction (XRD) data with the space group Fm$\bar {3}$m clearly demonstrates that the nanoparticles are of single phase. The particle size (D) decreases with increasing the SiO$_2$ concentration. The Bragg peak positions and the inter-planer spacing extracted from high-resolution transmission electron microscopy image and selected area electron diffraction are in well agreement with data obtained from XRD. The coercivity initially increases from 127~Oe to 208~Oe between D = 8.5~nm and 12.5~nm, following the D$^{-3/2}$ dependence and then decreases with further increasing D up to 21.5~nm with a D$^{-1}$ dependence, indicating the transition from single domain to multidomain regime. The effective magnetic anisotropic constant behaves similarly as coercivity, which confirms this transition. A complex scattering mechanisms have been fitted to explain the electronic transport properties of these nanoparticles. In addition we have studied core-level and valence band spectra using photoemission spectroscopy, which confirm the hybridization between $d$ states of Co/Fe. Further nanoparticle samples synthesized by co-precipitation method show higher saturation magnetization. The presence of Raman active modes can be associated with the high chemical ordering, which motivates for detailed temperature dependent structural investigation using synchrotron radiation and neutron sources.

The in-plane magnetic structure of Co4Nb2O9 is attributed to the large in-plane anisotropy while the noncollinearity of the spin configuration is attributed to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The high magnetoelectric coupling effect of Co4Nb2O9 in fields can be explained by its special in-plane magnetic structure.

In the antiferromagnetic state, the spectral weight below the gap is transferred to well-defined spectral features due to spin and orbital excitations. Low-energy phonons exhibit pronounced Fano anomalies indicative of strong interaction with the electron system for $T > T_N$, but become sharp and symmetric for $T < T_N$. The electronic continuum and the marked renormalization of the phonon lifetime by the onset of magnetic order are highly unusual for Mott insulators and indicate liquid-like correlations between spins and orbitals.

It has been well established that both in bulk at ambient pressure and for films under modest strains, cubic SrCoO$_{3-δ}$ ($δ< 0.2$) is a ferromagnetic metal. Recent theoretical work, however, indicates that a magnetic phase transition to an antiferromagnetic structure could occur under large strain accompanied by a metal-insulator transition. We have observed a strain-induced ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic phase transition in SrCoO$_{3-δ}$ films grown on DyScO$_3$ substrates, which provide a large tensile epitaxial strain, as compared to ferromagnetic films under lower tensile strain on SrTiO$_3$ substrates. Magnetometry results demonstrate the existence of antiferromagnetic spin correlations and neutron diffraction experiments provide a direct evidence for a G-type antiferromagnetic structure with Neél temperatures between $T_N \sim 135\,\pm\,10\,K$ and $\sim 325\,\pm\,10\,K$ depending on the oxygen content of the samples. Therefore, our data experimentally confirm the predicted strain-induced magnetic phase transition to an antiferromagnetic state for SrCoO$_{3-δ}$ thin films under large epitaxial strain.

We report a neutron scattering study of the magnetic order and dynamics of the bilayer perovskite Sr$_3$Fe$_2$O$_7$, which exhibits a temperature-driven metal-insulator transition at 340 K. We show that the Fe$^{4+}$ moments adopt incommensurate spiral order below $T_\text{N}=115$ K and provide a comprehensive description of the corresponding spin wave excitations. The observed magnetic order and excitation spectra can be well understood in terms of an effective spin Hamiltonian with interactions ranging up to third nearest-neighbor pairs. The results indicate that the helical magnetism in Sr$_3$Fe$_2$O$_7$ results from competition between ferromagnetic double-exchange and antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions whose strengths become comparable near the metal-insulator transition. They thus confirm a decades-old theoretical prediction and provide a firm experimental basis for models of magnetic correlations in strongly correlated metals.

Depth-sensitive magnetic, structural and chemical characterization is important in the understanding and optimization of novel physical phenomena emerging at interfaces of transition metal oxide heterostructures. In a simultaneous approach we have used polarized neutron and resonant X-ray reflectometry to determine the magnetic profile across atomically sharp interfaces of ferromagnetic La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 / multiferroic BiFeO3 bi-layers with sub-nanometer resolution. In particular, the X-ray resonant magnetic reflectivity measurements at the Fe and Mn resonance edges allowed us to determine the element specific depth profile of the ferromagnetic moments in both the La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 and BiFeO3 layers. Our measurements indicate a magnetically diluted interface layer within the La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 layer, in contrast to previous observations on inversely deposited layers. Additional resonant X-ray reflection measurements indicate a region of an altered Mn- and O-content at the interface, with a thickness matching that of the magnetic diluted layer, as origin of the reduction of the magnetic moment.

We report on neutron diffraction, thermal expansion, magnetostriction, dielectric, and specific heat measurements on polycrystalline FeCr2S4 in external magnetic fields. The ferrimagnetic ordering temperatures $T_{\mathrm{C}}\approx 170$ K and the transition at $T_{\mathrm{OO}}\approx 10$ K, which has been associated with orbital ordering, are only weakly shifted in magnetic fields up to 9 T. The cubic lattice parameter is found to decrease when entering the state below $T_{\mathrm{OO}}$. The magnetic moments of the Cr- and Fe-ions are reduced from the spin-only values throughout the magnetically ordered regime, but approach the spin-only values for fields $>$5.5 T. Thermal expansion in magnetic fields and magnetostriction experiments indicate a contraction of the sample below about 60 K. Below $T_{\mathrm{OO}}$ this contraction is followed by a moderate expansion of the sample for fields larger than $\sim$4.5 T. The transition at $T_{\mathrm{OO}}$ is accompanied by an anomaly in the dielectric constant. The dielectric constant depends on both the strength and orientation of the external magnetic field with respect to the applied electric field for $T<T_{\mathrm{OO}}$. A linear correlation of the magnetic-field-induced change of the dielectric constant and the magnetic-field dependent magnetization is observed. This behaviour is consistent with the existence of a ferroelectric polarization and a multiferroic ground state below 10 K.

Although both the crystal structure and electron configuration of this compound are closely similar to those of well-studied ruthenates and manganates, it exhibits very different physical properties. The fully-oxygenated compound (x=0) exhibits a charge-disproportionation transition at T_D = 340 K, and an antiferromagnetic transition at T_N = 115 K. For temperatures T \leq T_D, the material is a small-gap insulator; the antiferromagnetic order is incommensurate, which implies competing exchange interactions between the Fe^{4+} moments. The fully-deoxygenated compound (x=1) is highly insulating, and its Fe^{3+} moments exhibit commensurate antiferromagnetic order below T_N ~ 600 K. Compounds with intermediate x exhibit different order with lower T_N, likely as a consequence of frustrated exchange interactions between Fe^{3+} and Fe^{4+} sublattices. A previous proposal that the magnetic transition temperature reaches zero is not supported.

We report a comprehensive neutron diffraction study of the crystal structure and magnetic order in a series of single-crystal and powder samples of SrFeO$_{3-δ}$ in the vacancy range $0 \leq δ\leq 0.23$. The data provide detailed insights into the interplay between the oxygen vacancy order and the magnetic structure of this system. In particular, a crystallographic analysis of data on Sr8Fe8O23 revealed a structural transition between the high-temperature tetragonal and a low-temperature monoclinic phase with a critical temperature T = 75 K, which originates from charge ordering on the Fe sublattice and is associated with a metal-insulator transition. Our experiments also revealed a total of seven different magnetic structures of SrFeO$_{3-δ}$ in this range of $δ$, only two of which (namely an incommensurate helix state in SrFeO3 and a commensurate, collinear antiferromagnetic state in Sr4Fe4O11) had been identified previously. We present a detailed refinement of some of the magnetic ordering patterns and discuss the relationship between the magneto-transport properties of SrFeO$_{3-δ}$ samples and their phase composition and magnetic microstructure.

The electron-phonon interaction is of central importance for the electrical and thermal properties of solids, and its influence on superconductivity, colossal magnetoresistance, and other many-body phenomena in correlated-electron materials is currently the subject of intense research. However, the non-local nature of the interactions between valence electrons and lattice ions, often compounded by a plethora of vibrational modes, present formidable challenges for attempts to experimentally control and theoretically describe the physical properties of complex materials. Here we report a Raman scattering study of the lattice dynamics in superlattices of the high-temperature superconductor $\bf YBa_2 Cu_3 O_7$ and the colossal-magnetoresistance compound $\bf La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_{3}$ that suggests a new approach to this problem. We find that a rotational mode of the MnO$_6$ octahedra in $\bf La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_{3}$ experiences pronounced superconductivity-induced lineshape anomalies, which scale linearly with the thickness of the $\bf YBa_2 Cu_3 O_7$ layers over a remarkably long range of several tens of nanometers. The transfer of the electron-phonon coupling between superlattice layers can be understood as a consequence of long-range Coulomb forces in conjunction with an orbital reconstruction at the interface. The superlattice geometry thus provides new opportunities for controlled modification of the electron-phonon interaction in complex materials.

The data reveal a pronounced softening of the phonon at the in-plane wave vector q = (0, 0.3) upon cooling below ~ 105 K, but no corresponding anomaly at q = (0.3, 0). Based on the observed in-plane anisotropy, we argue that the electron-phonon interaction responsible for this anomaly supports an electronic instability associated with a uniaxial charge-density modulation and does not mediate d-wave superconductivity.

The main focus of this work is a detailed characterization and microstructural analysis of the films. Based on micro-Raman spectroscopy in combination with x-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive x-ray analysis, and scanning electron microscopy, some of the observed phonon modes can be attributed to micron-sized inclusions of Cu_{2}O. In the slightly underdoped film (x ~ 0.08), both the Cu_{2}O modes and others that can be assigned to the La_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4} matrix show pronounced softening and narrowing upon cooling below T ~ T_c. Based on control measurements on commercial Cu_{2}O powders and on a comparison to prior Raman scattering studies of other high-temperature superconductors, we speculate that proximity effects at La_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4}/Cu_{2}O interfaces may be responsible for these anomalies. Experiments on the slightly overdoped La_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4} film (x ~ 0.1) did not reveal comparable phonon anomalies.

In both samples modifications of the electronic pair-breaking peaks when interchanging the a- and b-axis were observed. The lineshapes of several phonon modes involving plane and apical oxygen vibrations exhibit pronounced anisotropies with respect to the incident and scattered light field configurations. Based on a theoretical model that takes both electronic and phononic contributions to the Raman spectra into account, we attribute the anisotropy of the superconductivity-induced changes in the phonon lineshapes to a small s-wave admixture to the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pair wave-function. Our theory allows us to disentangle the electronic Raman signal from the phononic part and to identify corresponding interference terms. We argue that the Raman spectra are consistent with an s-wave admixture with an upper limit of 20 percent.

In all samples we observe a strong continuous narrowing of the Raman-active Fe and As vibrations upon cooling below the spin-density-wave transition Ts. We attribute this effect to the opening of the spin-density-wave gap. The electron-phonon linewidths inferred from these data greatly exceed the predictions of ab-initio density functional calculations without spin polarization, which may imply that local magnetic moments survive well above Ts. A first-order structural transition accompanying the spin-density-wave transition induces discontinuous jumps in the phonon frequencies. These anomalies are increasingly suppressed for higher potassium concentrations. We also observe subtle phonon anomalies at the superconducting transition temperature Tc, with a behavior qualitatively similar to that in the cuprate superconductors.

We report a neutron scattering study of the spin excitation spectrum in the superconducting state of slightly overdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d system (Tc=87 K). We focus on the dispersion of the resonance peak in the superconducting state that is due to a S=1 collective mode. The measured spin excitation spectrum bears a strong similarity to the spectrum of the YBa2Cu3O6+x system for a similar doping level i.e. x= 0.95-1), which consists of intersecting upward- and downward-dispersing branches. A close comparison of the threshold of the electron-hole spin flip continuum, deduced from angle resolved photo-emission measurements in the same system, indicates that the magnetic response in the superconducting state is confined, in both energy and momentum, below the gapped Stoner continuum. In contrast to YBa2Cu3O6+x, the spin excitation spectrum is broader than the experimental resolution. In the framework of an itinerant-electron model, we quantitatively relate this intrinsic energy width to the superconducting gap distribution observed in scanning tunnelling microscopy experiments. Our study further suggests a significant in-plane anisotropy of the magnetic response.

We present inelastic neutron scattering data on highly overdoped Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca Cu_2 O_{8+δ} single crystals with superconducting transition temperature T_C=70 K and, for comparison, a nearly optimally doped crystal with T_C=87 K. In both samples, magnetic resonant modes with odd and even symmetry under exchange of the two CuO_2 layers in the unit cell are observed. In the overdoped sample, the linewidth of the odd mode is reduced compared with the optimally doped sample. This finding is discussed in conjunction with recent evidence for intrinsic inhomogeneities in this compound. The data on odd and even resonant excitations are otherwise fully consistent with trends established on the basis of data on YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}. This confirms the universality of these findings and extends them into the highly overdoped regime of the phase diagram.

The structural and magnetic properties of YVO3, NdVO3 and TbVO3 were investigated by single-crystal and powder neutron diffraction. YVO3 shows a structural phase transition at 200 K from an orthorhombic structure with the space group Pbnm to a monoclinic one with the space group P21/b. But supplementary high-resolution synchrotron diffraction experiments showed that the monoclinic distortion is extremely small. A group theoretical analysis shows that this magnetic state in the monoclinic phase is incompatible with the lattice structure, unless terms of higher than bilinear order in the spin operators are incorporated in the spin Hamiltonian. This observation is discussed in the light of recent theories invoking unusual many-body correlations between the vanadium t2g orbitals. A structural phase transition back to the orthorhombic space group Pbnm is observed upon cooling below 77 K. This transition is accompanied by a rearrangement of the magnetic structure into a mode compatible with the lattice structure. The crystal structures of NdVO3 and TbVO3 are closely similar to that of YVO3. However, only a single magnetic phase transition was found in the vanadium sublattice down to 9.5 K. Below 60 K the magnetic moments of the Nd- and Tb-ions are gradually polarized by the ordered vanadium moments. Below 11 K, we found a noncollinear order of the terbium moments.

Neutron diffraction was used to determine the crystal structure and magnetic ordering pattern of a La2CuO4 single crystal, with and without applied magnetic field. A previously unreported, subtle monoclinic distortion of the crystal structure away from the orthorhombic space group Bmab was detected. The distortion is also present in lightly Sr-doped crystals. A refinement of the crystal structure shows that the deviation from orthorhombic symmetry is predominantly determined by displacements of the apical oxygen atoms. An in-plane magnetic field is observed to drive a continuous reorientation of the copper spins from the orthorhombic b-axis to the c-axis, directly confirming predictions based on prior magnetoresistance and Raman scattering experiments. A spin-flop transition induced by a c-axis oriented field previously reported for non-stoichiometric La2CuO4 is also observed, but the transition field (11.5 T) is significantly larger than that in the previous work.

Resonant magnetic modes with odd and even symmetries were studied by inelastic neutron scattering experiments in the bilayer high-$T_c$ superconductor $\rm Y_{1-x}Ca_{x}Ba_2Cu_3O_{6+y}$ over a wide doping range. The threshold of the spin excitation continuum in the superconducting state, deduced from the energies and spectral weights of both modes, is compared with the superconducting d-wave gap, measured on the same samples by electronic Raman scattering in the $B_{1g}$ symmetry. Above a critical doping level of $δ\simeq 0.19$, both mode energies and the continuum threshold coincide. We find a simple scaling relationship between the characteristic energies and spectral weights of both modes, which indicates that the resonant modes are bound states in the superconducting energy gap, as predicted by the spin-exciton model of the resonant mode.

Single crystals of iron(IV) rich oxides SrFeO(3-x) with controlled oxygen content have been studied by Moessbauer spectroscopy, magnetometry, magnetotransport measurements, Raman spectroscopy, and infrared ellipsometry in order to relate the large magnetoresistance (MR) effects in this system to phase composition, magnetic and charge order. It is shown that three different types of MR effects occur. In cubic SrFeO3 (x = 0) a large negative MR of 25% at 9 T is associated with a hitherto unknown 60 K magnetic transition and a subsequent drop in resistivity. The 60 K transition appears in addition to the onset of helical ordering at ~130 K. In crystals with vacancy-ordered tetragonal SrFeO(3-x) as majority phase (x ~0.15) a coincident charge/antiferromagnetic ordering transition near 70 K gives rise to a negative giant MR effect of 90% at 9 T. A positive MR effect is observed in tetragonal and orthorhombic materials with increased oxygen deficiency (x = 0.19, 0.23) which are insulating at low temperatures. Phase mixtures can result in a complex superposition of these different MR phenomena. The MR effects in SrFeO(3-x) differ from those in manganites as no ferromagnetic states are involved.

The modes differ in their symmetry with respect to exchange between adjacent copper oxide layers. Counterparts of the mode with odd symmetry, but not the one with even symmetry, had been observed before at lower doping levels. The observation of the even mode resolves a long-standing puzzle, and the spectral weight ratio of both modes yields an estimate of the onset of particle-hole spin-flip excitations.

We present results of a systematic study of the c axis lattice dynamics in single layer Bi2Sr2CuO6 (Bi2201), bilayer Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) and trilayer Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 (Bi2223) cuprate superconductors. Our study is based on both experimental data obtained by spectral ellipsometry on single crystals and theoretical calculations. The calculations are carried out within the framework of a classical shell model, which includes long-range Coulomb interactions and short-range interactions of the Buckingham form in a system of polarizable ions. Using the same set of the shell model parameters for Bi2201, Bi2212 and Bi2223, we calculate the frequencies of the Brillouin-zone center phonon modes of A2u symmetry and suggest the phonon mode eigenvector patterns. We achieve good agreement between the calculated A2u eigenfrequencies and the experimental values of the c axis TO phonon frequencies which allows us to make a reliable phonon mode assignment for all three Bi-based cuprate superconductors. We also present the results of our shell model calculations for the Gamma-point A1g symmetry modes in Bi2201, Bi2212 and Bi2223 and suggest an assignment that is based on the published experimental Raman spectra. The superconductivity-induced phonon anomalies recently observed in the c axis infrared and resonant Raman scattering spectra in trilayer Bi2223 are consistently explained with the suggested assignment.

Abstract:
We observe an anomalous oxygen isotope effect on the a-axis component of the far-infrared electronic response of detwinned YBa2Cu3$^{16,18}$O$_{6.9}$. For $^{18}$O a pronounced low-energy electronic mode (LEM) appears around 240 cm$^{-1}$. This a-axis LEM exhibits a clear aging effect, after one year it is shifted to 190 cm$^{-1}$. For $^{16}$O we cannot resolve a corresponding a-axis LEM above…

We interpret the LEM in terms of a collective electronic mode that is pinned by `isotopic defects', i.e. by the residual $^{16}$O in the matrix of $^{18}$O.

Neutron spectroscopy has revealed a highly unusual magnetic structure and dynamics in YVO$_3$, an insulating pseudocubic perovskite that undergoes a series of temperature induced phase transitions between states with different spin and orbital ordering patterns. A good description of the neutron data is obtained by a theoretical analysis of the spin and orbital correlations of a realistic one-dimensional model. This leads to the tentative identification of one of the phases of YVO$_3$ with the ``orbital Peierls state'', a theoretically proposed many-body state comprised of orbital singlet bonds.

Abstract:
Inelastic neutron scattering experiments in high-$T_c$ cuprates have evidenced a new magnetic excitation present in the superconducting state. In particular, recent experiments on single layer Tl$_{2}$Ba$_{2}$CuO$_{6+δ}$, performed near optimum doping ($ T_{c} \sim 90$ K), provide evidence of a sharp magnetic resonant mode below $ T_{c}$, similar to previous reports on the YBCO and BSCCO bilayer…

The magnetic structure is complex, comprising substantial G-type and A-type antiferromagnetic components in addition to the predominant ferromagnetic component. The magnon spectrum, on the other hand, is gapless and nearly isotropic. We show that these findings are inconsistent with the orbitally ordered states thus far proposed for YTiO$_3$ and discuss general implications for a theoretical description of exchange interactions in orbitally degenerate systems.

The predominant structural modification below the transition is an in-plane shift of the apical oxygen. In the doped sample, the orthorhombic superstructure is strongly disordered, and a glassy state involving both magnetic and structural degrees of freedom develops at low temperature. The spin correlations are commensurate.

An unusual spin excitation mode observed by neutron scattering has inspired numerous theoretical studies of the interplay between charged quasiparticles and collective spin excitations in the copper oxide high temperature superconductors. The mode has thus far only been observed in materials with crystal structures consisting of copper oxide bilayers, and it is notably absent in the single-layer compound La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4+δ}$. Neutron scattering data now show that the mode is present in Tl$_2$Ba$_2$Cu$_{6+δ}$, a single-layer compound with T$_c$ $\sim$ 90 K, thus demonstrating that it is a generic feature of the copper oxide superconductors, independent of the layer sequence. This restricts the theoretical models for the origin of the resonant mode and its role in the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity.

These results point towards an unusual spin density wave state coexisting with superconductivity.

In this work we report on Hall effect, resistivity and thermopower measurements in n-type indium selenide at room temperature under either hydrostatic and quasi-hydrostatic pressure. Up to 40 kbar (= 4 GPa), the decrease of carrier concentration as the pressure increases is explained through the existence of a subsidiary minimum in the conduction band. This minimum shifts towards lower energies under pressure, with a pressure coefficient of about -105 meV/GPa, and its related impurity level traps electrons as it reaches the band gap and approaches the Fermi level. The pressure value at which the electron trapping starts is shown to depend on the electron concentration at ambient pressure and the dimensionality of the electron gas. At low pressures the electron mobility increases under pressure for both 3D and 2D electrons, the increase rate being higher for 2D electrons, which is shown to be coherent with previous scattering mechanisms models. The phase transition from the semiconductor layered phase to the metallic sodium cloride phase is observed as a drop in resistivity around 105 kbar, but above 40 kbar a sharp nonreversible increase of the carrier concentration is observed, which is attributed to the formation of donor defects as precursors of the phase transition.
