Aspects of Modular Flavor Symmetries
Abstract: Modular flavor symmetries refers to scenarios in which fermion masses respect modular symmetries. Such scenarios have been studied in the bottom-up approach and have an explicit realization in string theory. They rely on the remarkable properties of vector-valued modular forms.

Modular invariant holomorphic observables
Abstract: In modular invariant models of flavor, observables must be modular invariant. The observables discussed so far in the literature are functions of the modulus $τ$ and its conjugate, $\barτ$. We point out that certain combinations of observables depend only on $τ$, i.e. are meromorphic, and in some cases even holomorphic functions of $τ$. These functions, which we dub ``invariants'' in this Letter,… ▽ More

Matter matters in moduli fixing and modular flavor symmetries
Abstract: Modular flavor symmetries provide us with a very compelling approach to the flavor problem. It has been argued that moduli values close to some special values like $τ=i$ or $τ=ω$ provide us with the best fits to data. We point out that the presence of hidden "matter" fields, needed to uplift symmetric AdS vacua, gives rise to a dynamical mechanism that leads to such values of $τ$.

Neutrino Flavor Model Building and the Origins of Flavor and CP Violation: A Snowmass White Paper
Abstract: The neutrino sector offers one of the most sensitive probes of new physics beyond the Standard Model of Particle Physics. The mechanism of neutrino mass generation is still unknown. The observed suppression of neutrino masses hints at a large scale, conceivably of the order of the scale of a Grand Unified Theory (GUT), a unique feature of neutrinos that is not shared by the charged fermions. Generation flow in field theory and strings
Abstract: Nontrivial strong dynamics often leads to the appearance of chiral composites. In phenomenological applications, these can either play the role of Standard Model particles or lift chiral exotics by partnering with them in mass terms. As a consequence, the RG flow may change the effective number of chiral generations, a phenomenon we call generation flow. We provide explicit constructions of global… ▽ More

Quasi-Eclectic Modular Flavor Symmetries
Abstract: Modular flavor symmetries provide us with a new, promising approach to the flavor problem. However, in their original formulation the kinetic terms of the standard model fields do not have a preferred form, thus introducing additional parameters, which limit the predictive power of this scheme. In this work, we introduce the scheme of quasi-eclectic flavor symmetries as a simple fix. These symmetr… ▽ More

Efficient sampling of constrained high-dimensional theoretical spaces with machine learning

A note on the predictions of models with modular flavor symmetries
Abstract: Models with modular flavor symmetries have been thought to be highly predictive. We point out that these predictions are subject to corrections from non-holomorphic terms in the Lagrangean. The most general Kähler potential consistent with the symmetries of the model contains… ▽ More

Baryogenesis From Flavon Decays

Such weakly coupled scalar fields tend to dominate the energy density of the universe before they decay. Large hierarchies from approximate R symmetries
Abstract: We show that hierarchically small vacuum expectation values of the superpotential in supersymmetric theories can be a consequence of an approximate R symmetry. We briefly discuss the role of such small constants in moduli stabilization and understanding the huge hierarchy between the Planck and electroweak scales.

A note on the primordial abundance of stau NLSPs
Abstract: In scenarios with a gravitino LSP, there exist strong BBN constraints on the abundance of a possible stau NLSP. We find that in settings with substantial left-right mixing of the stau mass eigenstates these constraints can be evaded even for very long-lived staus.

Unified origin of baryons and dark matter
Abstract: We investigate the possibility that both the baryon asymmetry of the universe and the observed cold dark matter density are generated by decays of a heavy scalar field which dominates the universe before nucleosynthesis. Since baryons and cold dark matter have common origin, this mechanism yields a natural explanation of the similarity of the corresponding energy densities. The cosmological modu… ▽ More

From strings to the MSSM
Abstract: We review recent progress in embedding the supersymmetric standard model into string theory. We discuss how, with the incorporation of certain aspects of grand unification, a search strategy can be developed that allows to efficiently find rather large numbers of promising string vacua. Global string-derived models with the following features are discussed: (i) exact MSSM spectrum below the unif… ▽ More

Running minimal flavor violation
Abstract: We consider the flavor structure of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) in the framework of `minimal flavor violation' (MFV). We show that, if one imposes the MFV structure at some scale, to a good accuracy the MFV decomposition works at all other scales. That is, quantum effects can be described by running coefficients of the MFV decomposition. We find that the coefficients get dri… ▽ More

Notes on Local Grand Unification
Abstract: Grand unified models in four dimensions typically suffer from the doublet-triplet splitting problem. This obstacle can be overcome in higher-dimensional settings, where a non-trivial gauge group topography can explain the simultaneous appearance of complete standard model generations in the form of 16-plets of SO(10) and the Higgs fields as split multiplets. In these notes, the emerging scheme o… ▽ More

The Heterotic Road to the MSSM with R parity
Abstract: In a previous paper, referred to as a "Mini-Landscape" search, we explored a "fertile patch" of the heterotic landscape based on a Z6-II orbifold with SO(10) and E6 local GUT structures. In the present paper we extend this analysis. We find many models with the minimal supersymmetric standard model spectra and an exact R parity. In all of these models, the vector-like exotics decouple along D fl… ▽ More

Gauged Discrete Symmetries and Proton Stability
Abstract: We discuss the results of a search for anomaly free Abelian Z_N discrete symmetries that lead to automatic R-parity conservation and prevents dangerous higher-dimensional proton decay operators in simple extensions of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model (MSSM) based on the left-right symmetric group, the Pati-Salam group and SO(10). We require that the superpotential for t… ▽ More
