The bottom quark transport coefficients, i.e., drag and diffusion coefficients, have been studied for the collisional and soft gluon radiative processes within the viscous QCD medium. The thermal medium effects are incorporated using the effective fugacity quasiparticle model (EQPM). Both the shear and bulk viscous effects at leading order are embedded through the near-equilibrium distribution functions of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) constituent quasiparticles. The transport coefficients' dependence on the bottom quark's initial momentum and QGP temperature has been investigated. The relative dominance of the radiative over the collisional process for the bottom quark seems to occur at a higher initial momentum compared to that of the charm quark. In contrast, the effect of the viscous corrections seems to be more for the charm quark.

The present document discusses plans for a compact, next-generation multi-purpose detector at the LHC as a follow-up to the present ALICE experiment. The aim is to build a nearly massless barrel detector consisting of truly cylindrical layers based on curved wafer-scale ultra-thin silicon sensors with MAPS technology, featuring an unprecedented low material budget of 0.05% X$_0$ per layer, with the innermost layers possibly positioned inside the beam pipe. In addition to superior tracking and vertexing capabilities over a wide momentum range down to a few tens of MeV/$c$, the detector will provide particle identification via time-of-flight determination with about 20~ps resolution. In addition, electron and photon identification will be performed in a separate shower detector. The proposed detector is conceived for studies of pp, pA and AA collisions at luminosities a factor of 20 to 50 times higher than possible with the upgraded ALICE detector, enabling a rich physics program ranging from measurements with electromagnetic probes at ultra-low transverse momenta to precision physics in the charm and beauty sector.

We report studies of charge-independent (CI) and charge-dependent (CD) two-particle differential-number correlation functions, $\rm{R_{2}}(Δη, Δ\varphi)$, and transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) correlation functions, $\rm{P_{2}}(Δη, Δ\varphi)$, of charged particles in $\sqrt{\textit{s}}$ = 2.76 TeV pp collisions with the PYTHIA and HERWIG models. Model predictions are presented for inclusive charged hadrons ($h^\pm$), as well as pions ($π^\pm$), kaons (K$^\pm$), and (anti-)protons ($\rm \bar{p}$/p) in the ranges $0.2 < \textit{p}_{\rm T} \le 2.0~\rm{GeV}/\textit{c}$, $2.0 < \textit{p}_{\rm T} \le 5.0~\rm{GeV}/\textit{c}$, and $5.0 < \textit{p}_{\rm T} \le 30.0~\rm{GeV}/\textit{c}$, with full azimuthal coverage in the range $|η|< 1.0$. We compare the model predictions for the strength and shape of the $\rm{R_{2}}$ and $\rm{P_{2}}$ correlators as these pertain to recent measurements by the ALICE collaboration. The $\rm{R_{2}}$ and $\rm{P_{2}}$ correlation functions estimated with PYTHIA and HERWIG exhibit qualitatively similar near-side and away-side correlation structures but feature important differences. Our analysis indicates that comparative studies of $\rm{R_{2}}$ and $\rm{P_{2}}$ correlation functions would provide valuable insight towards the understanding of particle production in pp collisions, and by extension, should also be useful in studies of heavy-ion collisions. Comparison of the $Δη$ dependence of $\rm{R_{2}}$ and $\rm{P_{2}}$ could contribute, in particular, to a better understanding and modeling of the angular ordering of particles produced by hadronization in jets, as well as a better description of jet fragmentation functions of identified species at low momentum fraction $(z)$.

The centrality dependence of the charged-particle multiplicity densities ($dN_{ch}/dη$) and transverse energy densities ($dE_{T}/dη$) are investigated using the two-component Glauber approach for broad range of energies in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. A comprehensive study shows that the data is well described within the framework of two component model which includes the contribution of "soft processes" and "hard processes" for different centrality classes and energies. The data at two different energies are compared by means of the ratio of $dN_{ch}/dη$ (and $dE_{T}/dη$) to see the interplay of energy and $x$-scaling.

We report the excitation energy dependence of specific heat (\cv) of hadronic matter at freeze-out in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider energies by analyzing the published data on event-by-event mean transverse momentum (\meanpt) distributions. The \meanpt~distributions in finite \pt~ranges are converted to distributions of effective temperatures, and dynamical fluctuations in temperature are extracted by subtracting widths of the corresponding mixed event distributions. The heat capacity per particle at the kinetic freeze-out surface is presented as a function of collision energy, which shows a sharp rise in \cv~below \sNN~=~62.4~GeV. We employ the Hadron Resonance Gas (HRG) model to estimate \cv~at the chemical and kinetic freeze-out surfaces. The experimental results are compared to the HRG and other theoretical model calculations. HRG results show good agreement with data. Model predictions for \cv~at the Large Hadron Collider energy are presented.

We observe that the transverse momentum dependence of $φ$ and $Ω$ $v_{2}$ is similar to that of $π$ and $p$, respectively, which may indicate that the heavier strange quark flows as strongly as the lighter up and down quarks. This observation constitutes a clear piece of evidence for the development of partonic collectivity in heavy-ion collisions at the top RHIC energy. Number of constituent quark scaling is found to hold within statistical uncertainty for both 0-30$\%$ and 30-80$\%$ collision centrality. There is an indication of the breakdown of previously observed mass ordering between $φ$ and proton $v_{2}$ at low transverse momentum in the 0-30$\%$ centrality range, possibly indicating late hadronic interactions affecting the proton $v_{2}$.

Nearly fully overlapping collisions are selected based on the amount of energy deposited by spectators in the STAR Zero Degree Calorimeters (ZDCs). Within this sample, the observed dependence of $v_2\{2\}$ on multiplicity demonstrates that ZDC information combined with multiplicity can preferentially select different overlap configurations in U+U collisions. An initial-state model with gluon saturation describes the slope of $v_2\{2\}$ as a function of multiplicity in central collisions better than one based on Glauber with a two-component multiplicity model.

We propose to characterize heavy-ion collisions at ultra-relativistic energies by using fluctuations of energy density and temperature. Temperature fluctuations on an event-by-event basis have been studied both in terms of global temperature of the event, and locally by constructing fluctuation maps in small phase space bins in each event. Global temperature fluctuations provide an estimation of the specific heat of the system. Local temperature fluctuations of the event may be ascribed to the remnants of initial energy density fluctuations. Together these two observables give an insight into the system created in heavy-ion collisions and its evolution. Event-by-event hydrodynamic calculations indeed provide adequate theoretical basis for understanding the origin of the fluctuations. We demonstrate the feasibility of studying global and local temperature fluctuations at the Large Hadron Collider energy by the use of AMPT event generator.

Dihadron angular correlations in $d$+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV are reported as a function of the measured zero-degree calorimeter neutral energy and the forward charged hadron multiplicity in the Au-beam direction. A finite correlated yield is observed at large relative pseudorapidity ($Δη$) on the near side (i.e. relative azimuth $Δφ\sim0$). This correlated yield as a function of $Δη$ appears to scale with the dominant, primarily jet-related, away-side ($Δφ\simπ$) yield. The Fourier coefficients of the $Δφ$ correlation, $V_{n}=\langle\cos nΔφ\rangle$, have a strong $Δη$ dependence. In addition, it is found that $V_{1}$ is approximately inversely proportional to the mid-rapidity event multiplicity, while $V_{2}$ is independent of it with similar magnitude in the forward ($d$-going) and backward (Au-going) directions.

The measurements are carried out by the STAR experiment at midrapidity (|y| < 0.5) and within the transverse momentum range 0.4 < pT < 0.8 GeV/c in the first phase of the Beam Energy Scan program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These measurements are important for understanding the Quantum Chromodynamic (QCD) phase diagram. The products of the moments, Sσand κσ^{2}, are sensitive to the correlation length of the hot and dense medium created in the collisions and are related to the ratios of baryon number susceptibilities of corresponding orders. The products of moments are found to have values significantly below the Skellam expectation and close to expectations based on independent proton and anti-proton production. The measurements are compared to a transport model calculation to understand the effect of acceptance and baryon number conservation, and also to a hadron resonance gas model.

A study is reported of the same- and opposite-sign charge-dependent azimuthal correlations with respect to the event plane in Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV. The charge multiplicity asymmetries between the up/down and left/right hemispheres relative to the event plane are utilized. The contributions from statistical fluctuations and detector effects were subtracted from the (co-)variance of the observed charge multiplicity asymmetries. In the mid- to most-central collisions, the same- (opposite-) sign pairs are preferentially emitted in back-to-back (aligned on the same-side) directions. The charge separation across the event plane, measured by the difference, $Δ$, between the like- and unlike-sign up/down $-$ left/right correlations, is largest near the event plane. The difference is found to be proportional to the event-by-event final-state particle ellipticity (via the observed second-order harmonic $v^{\rm obs}_{2}$), where $Δ=(1.3\pm1.4({\rm stat})^{+4.0}_{-1.0}({\rm syst}))\times10^{-5}+(3.2\pm0.2({\rm stat})^{+0.4}_{-0.3}({\rm syst}))\times10^{-3}v^{\rm obs}_{2}$ for 20-40% Au+Au collisions. The implications for the proposed chiral magnetic effect are discussed.

In the frame work of a nuclear overlap model, we estimate the number of nucleon and quark participants in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions. We observe the number of nucleon ($N_{N-part}$)-normalized enhancement of multi-strange particles which show a monotonic increase with centrality, turns out to be a centrality independent scaling behavior when normalized to number of constituent quarks participating in the collision ($N_{q-part}$). In addition, we observe that the $N_{q-part}$-normalized enhancement, when further normalized to the strangeness content, shows a strangeness independent scaling behavior. This holds good at top RHIC energy. However, the corresponding SPS data show a weak $N_{q-part}$-scaling with strangeness scaling being violated at top SPS energy. This scaling at RHIC indicates that the partonic degrees of freedom playing an important role in the production of multi-strange particles. Top SPS energy, in view of the above observations, shows a co-existence of hadronic and partonic phases. We give a comparison of data with HIJING, AMPT and UrQMD models to understand the particle production dynamics at different energies.

Dihadron azimuthal correlations containing a high transverse momentum ($p_T$) trigger particle are sensitive to the properties of the nuclear medium created at RHIC through the strong interactions occurring between the traversing parton and the medium, i.e. jet-quenching. Previous measurements revealed a strong modification to dihadron azimuthal correlations in Au+Au collisions with respect to p+p and d+Au collisions. The modification increases with the collision centrality, suggesting a path-length or energy density dependence to the jet-quenching effect. This paper reports STAR measurements of dihadron azimuthal correlations in mid-central (20-60%) Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=200$ GeV as a function of the trigger particle's azimuthal angle relative to the event plane, $φ_s=|φ_t-ψ_{\rm EP}|$. The azimuthal correlation is studied as a function of both the trigger and associated particle $p_T$. The subtractions of the combinatorial background and anisotropic flow, assuming Zero Yield At Minimum (ZYAM), are described. The correlation results are first discussed with subtraction of the even harmonic (elliptic and quadrangular) flow backgrounds. The away-side correlation is strongly modified, and the modification varies with $φ_s$, with a double-peak structure for out-of-plane trigger particles. The near-side ridge (long range pseudo-rapidity $Δη$ correlation) appears to drop with increasing $φ_s$ while the jet-like component remains approximately constant. The correlation functions are further studied with subtraction of odd harmonic triangular flow background arising from fluctuations. It is found that the triangular flow, while responsible for the majority of the amplitudes, is not sufficient to explain the $φ_s$-dependence of the ridge or the away-side double-peak structure. ...

We report on K*0 production at mid-rapidity in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 62.4 and 200 GeV collected by the Solenoid Tracker at RHIC (STAR) detector. The K*0 is reconstructed via the hadronic decays K*0 \to K+ pi- and \bar{K*0} \to K-pi+. Transverse momentum, pT, spectra are measured over a range of pT extending from 0.2 GeV/c to 5 GeV/c. The center of mass energy and system size dependence of the rapidity density, dN/dy, and the average transverse momentum, <pT>, are presented. The measured N(K*0)/N(K) and N(φ)/N(K*0) ratios favor the dominance of re-scattering of decay daughters of K*0 over the hadronic regeneration for the K*0 production. In the intermediate pT region (2.0 < pT < 4.0 GeV/c), the elliptic flow parameter, v2, and the nuclear modification factor, RCP, agree with the expectations from the quark coalescence model of particle production.

Our measurements of the products κσ^2 and S σ, which can be related to theoretical calculations sensitive to baryon number susceptibilities and long range correlations, are constant as functions of collision centrality. We compare these products with results from lattice QCD and various models without a critical point and study the \sqrt(s_NN) dependence of κσ^2. From the measurements at the three beam energies, we find no evidence for a critical point in the QCD phase diagram for μ_B below 200 MeV.

Abstract:
In this work, we extract the QCD Equation of State (EoS) using experimental results of the $φ$ meson produced in nuclear collisions at AGS, SPS and RHIC energies. The data are confronted to simple thermodynamic expectations and lattice results. The experimental data indicate a first order phase transition, with a mixed phase stretching energy density between $\sim$ 1 and 3.2 GeV/$fm^3$.

The variation of average transverse mass of identified hadrons with charge multiplicity have been studied for AGS, SPS and RHIC energies. The observation of a plateau in the average transverse mass for multiplicities corresponding to SPS energies is attributed to the formation of a co-existence phase of quark gluon plasma and hadrons. A subsequent rise for RHIC energies may indicate a deconfined phase in the initial state. Several possibilities which can affect the average transverse mass are discussed. Constraints on the initial temperature and thermalization time have been put from the various experimental data available at SPS energies.
