Geiger mode APD's for the underground cosmic ray experiment EMMA
Abstract: Multi-pixel photodiodes operating in a limited Geiger mode will be used for photoreadout of scintillator counters in underground cosmic ray experiment EMMA. Main parameters of photodiodes and the performance of EMMA scintillator counters are presented.

Multi-pixel Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode and wavelength shifting fibre readout of plastic scintillator counters of the EMMA underground experiment
Abstract: The results of a development of a scintillator counter with wavelength shifting (WLS) fibre and a multi-pixel Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode readout are presented. The photodiode has a metal-resistor-semiconductor layered structure and operates in the limited Geiger mode. The scintillator counter has been developed for the EMMA underground cosmic ray experiment.

On the level of background in underground muon measurements with plastic scintillator counters
Abstract: In this short note we present results of background measurements carried out with a polystyrene based cast plastic 12.0x12.0x3.0 cm^3 size scintillator counter with a wavelength shifting fibre and a multi-pixel Geiger mode avalanche photodiode readout in the Baksan underground laboratory at a depth of 200 meters of water equivalent. The total counting rate of the scintillator counter measured at… ▽ More

A LED Flasher for TUNKA experiment
Abstract: A LED flasher has been developed for TUNKA-133 EAS Cherenkov detector. A blue ultra bright InGaN LED is used as a light source in the flasher. The flasher's driver is based on a fast discharge of a small capacitor via a complementary pair of fast RF transistors. The light yield of the flasher is adjusted in the wide range of from 0 to up to 10**9 photons per pulse. The results of studies of the… ▽ More

Powerful nanosecond light sources based on LEDs for astroparticle physics experiments
Abstract: Powerful nanosecond light sources based on LEDs have been developed for use in astroparticle physics experiments. The light sources use either matrixes of ultra bright blue LEDs or a new generation high power blue LEDs. It's shown that such light sources have light yield of up to 10**10 - 10**12 photons per pulse with very fast light emission kinetics. The described light sources are important f… ▽ More

Photoelectron backscattering in vacuum phototubes
Abstract: In this article we describe results of a photoelectron backscattering effect in vacuum phototubes: classical photomultipliers (PMT) and hybrid phototubes (PH). Late pulses occurring in PMTs are attributed to the photoelectron backscattering and distinguished from pulses due to an anode glow effect. The late pulses are measured in a number of PMTs and HPs with various photocathode sizes covering… ▽ More
