The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of the neutral beam injector (NBI) operation regime on the saturation phase of the Alfven Eigenmodes (AEs) in DIII-D plasma. The analysis is done using the linear and nonlinear versions of the gyro-fluid code FAR3d. A set of parametric analyses are performed modifying the nonlinear simulation EP \b{eta} (NBI injection power), EP energy (NBI voltage) and the radial location of the EP density profile gradient (NBI radial deposition). The analysis indicates a transition from the soft (local plasma relaxation) to the hard MHD (global plasma relaxation) limit if the simulation EP \b{eta} >= 0.02, leading to bursting MHD activity caused by radial AEs overlapping. MHD bursts cause an enhancement of the EP transport showing ballistic-like features as avalanche-like events. Simulations in the soft MHD limit show an increment of the EP density gradient as the EP \b{eta} increases. On the other hand, there is a gradient upper limit in the hard MHD limit, consistent with the critical-gradient behavior. AEs induce shear flows and zonal current leading to the deformation of the flux surfaces and the safety factor profile, respectively, particularly strong for the simulation in the hard MHD limit. Simulations in the hard MHD regime show a decrease of the AE frequency in the saturation phase; this is caused by the destabilization of a transitional mode between a 9/3-10/3 TAE and a 9/3 RSAE that may explain the AE frequency down-sweeping observed in some DIII-D discharges. Reducing the EP energy in the nonlinear simulations leads to a weakening of the plasma perturbation. On the other hand, increasing the EP energy causes the opposite effect. Nonlinear simulations of off-axis NBI profiles indicate a lower plasma perturbation as the EP density gradient is located further away from the magnetic axis.

The aim of the present study is to analyze the effect of the electron cyclotron heating (ECH) on the linear stability of Alfven Eigenmodes (AE) and energetic particle modes (EPM) triggered by energetic ions in Heliotron J plasma. The analysis is performed using the FAR3d code that solves a reduced MHD model to describe the thermal plasma coupled with a gyrofluid model for the energetic particles (EP) species. The simulations reproduce the AE/EPM stability trends observed in the experiments as the electron temperature (Te) increases, modifying the thermal plasma beta, EP beta and EP slowing down time. Particularly, the n/m=1/2 EPM and 2/4 Global AE (GAE) are stabilized in the low bumpiness (LB) configuration due to an enhancement of the continuum, Finite Larmor radius (FLR) and e-i Landau damping effects as the thermal beta increases. On the other hand, a larger ECH injection power cannot stabilize the AE/EPM in Medium (MB) and High bumpiness (HB) configurations because the damping effects are weaker compared to the LB case, unable to balance the further destabilization induced by an enhanced EP resonance as the EP slowing down time and EP beta increases with Te

The aim of the present study is to analyze the saturation regime of the Toroidal Alfven Eigenmodes (TAE) in the LHD plasma, particularly the MHD burst. The linear and nonlinear evolution of the TAEs are simulated by the FAR3d code that uses a reduced MHD model for the thermal plasma coupled with a gyrofluid model for the energetic particles (EP) species. The linear simulations indicate the overlapping of 1/2-1/1, 2/3-2/4 and 3/5-3/6 TAEs in the inner-middle plasma region and frequency range of 45-75 kHz, triggered by EPs with an energy of Tf = 45 keV and EP beta = 0.022. The nonlinear simulations show that 2/3-2/4 and 3/4-3/5 TAEs are further destabilized due to the energy transfer from 1/1-1/2 TAE, leading to a broad TAEs radial overlapping and the MHD burst triggering. The energy of 1/1-1/2 TAE is also nonlinearly transferred to the thermal plasma destabilizing the 0/0 and 0/1 modes, inducing the generation of shear flows and zonal currents as well as large deformations in the thermal pressure and EP density radial profiles. The nonlinear simulation reproduces the same succession of instabilities and the same frequency range with respect to the experiment. The instability propagates outward during the bursting phase, showing a large decrease of the EP density profile between the middle-outer plasma, pointing out the loss of part of the EP population that explains the decrease of the plasma heating efficiency observed during the MHD burst.

The aim of this study is to analyze the stability of Alfven Eigenmodes (AE) in the China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR) plasma for steady state operations. The analysis is done using the gyro-fluid code FAR3d including the effect of the acoustic modes, EP Finite Larmor radius damping effects and multiple energetic particle populations. Two high poloidal beta scenarios are studied with respect to the location of the internal transport barrier (ITB) at r/a = 0.45 (case A) and r/a = 0.6 (case B). Both operation scenarios show a narrow TAE gap between the inner-middle plasma region and a wide EAE gap all along the plasma radius. The AE stability of CFETR plasmas improves if the ITB is located inwards, case A, showing AEs with lower growth rates with respect to the case B. The AEs growth rate is smaller in the case A because the modes are located in the inner-middle plasma region where the stabilizing effect of the magnetic shear is stronger with respect to the case B. Multiple EP populations effects (NBI driven EP + alpha articles) are negligible for the case A, although the simulations for the case B show a stabilizing effect of the NBI EP on the n=1 BAE caused by alpha particles during the thermalization process. If the FLR damping effects are included in the simulations, the growth rate of the EAE/NAE decreases up to 70 %, particularly for n > 3 toroidal families. Low n AEs (n<6) show the largest growth rates. On the other hand, high $n$ modes (n=6 to 15) are triggered in the frequency range of the NAE, strongly damped by the FLR effects.

The aim of the present study is to analyze the saturation regime of the energetic-ion-driven resistive interchange mode (EIC) in the LHD plasma. A set of non linear simulations are performed by the FAR3d code that uses a reduced MHD model for the thermal plasma coupled with a gyrofluid model for the energetic particles (EP) species. The hellically trapped EP component is introduced through a modification of the averaged drift velocity operator to include their precessional drift. The non linear simulation results show similar 1/1 EIC saturation phases with respect to the experimental observations, reproducing the enhancement of the n/m = 1/1 resistive interchange modes (RIC) amplitude and width as the EP $β$ increases, the EP beta threshold for the 1/1 EIC excitation, the further destabilization of the 1/1 EIC as the population of the helically trapped EP increases and the triggering of burst events. The frequency of the 1/1 EIC calculated during the burst event is 9.4 kHz and the 2/2 and 3/3 overtones are destabilized, consistent with the frequency range and the complex mode structure measured in the experiment. In addition, the simulation shows the inward propagation of the 1/1 EIC due to the non linear destabilization of the 3/4 and 2/3 EPMs, leading to the partial overlapping between resonances during the burst event. Finally, the analysis of the 1/1 EIC stabilization phase shows the excitation of the 1/1 RIC as soon as the flattening induced by the 1/1 EIC in the pressure profile vanishes, leading to the retrieval of the pressure gradient at the plasma periphery and the overcoming of the RIC stability limit.

The aim of this study is to analyze the stability of the Alfven eigenmodes (AE) in the Chinese First Quasi-axisymmetric Stellarator (CFQS). The AE stability is calculated using the code FAR3d that solves the reduced MHD equations to describe the linear evolution of the poloidal flux and the toroidal component of the vorticity in a full 3D system, coupled with equations of density and parallel velocity moment for the energetic particles (EP) species including the effect of the helical couplings and acoustic modes. The Landau damping and resonant destabilization effects are added in the model by a given closure relation. The simulation results indicate the destabilization of n = 1 to 4 AEs by EP during the slowing down process, particularly n = 1 and n = 2 toroidal AEs (TAE), n = 3 elliptical AE (EAE) and n = 4 non circular AE (NAE). If the resonance is caused by EPs with an energy above 17 keV (weakly thermalized EP), n = 2 EAEs and n = 3 NAEs are unstable. On the other hand, EPs with an energy below 17 keV (late thermalization stage) lead to the destabilization of n = 3 and n = 4 TAEs. The simulations for an off-axis NBI injection indicate the further destabilization of n = 2 to 4 AEs although the growth rate of the n = 1 AEs slightly decreases, so no clear optimization trend with respect to the NBI deposition region is identified. In addition, n = 2, 4 helical AE (HAE) are unstable above an EP \b{eta} threshold. Also, if the thermal \b{eta} of the simulation increases (higher thermal plasma density) the AE stability of the plasma improves. The simulations including the effect of the finite Larmor radius and electron-ion Landau damping show the stabilization of the n = 1 to 4 EAE/NAEs as well as a decrease of the growth rate and frequency of the n = 1 to 4 BAE/TAEs.

The aim of the present study is to perform a theoretical analysis of different strategies to stabilize energetic-ion-driven resistive interchange mode (EIC) in LHD plasma. We use a reduced MHD for the thermal plasma coupled with a gyrofluid model for the energetic particles (EP) species. The hellically trapped EP component is introduced through a modification of the drift frequency to include their precessional drift. The stabilization trends of the 1/1 EIC observed experimentally with respect to the thermal plasma density and temperature are reproduced by the simulations, showing a reasonable agreement with the data. The LHD operation scenarios with stable 1/1 EIC are identified, leading to the stabilization of the 1/1 EIC if the thermal plasma density and temperature are above a given threshold. The 1/1 EIC are also stabilized if the rotational transform is modified in a way that the 1/1 rational surface is located further away than 0.9 times the normalized radius, or the magnetic shear in the plasma periphery is enhanced. Also, LHD discharges with large magnetic fields show a higher EIC destabilization threshold with respect to the thermal plasma density. If the perpendicular NBI deposition region is moved further inward than 0.875 times the normalized radius the 1/1 EIC are also stabilized. In addition, increasing the perpendicular NBI voltage such that the EP energy is higher than 30 keV stabilizes the 1/1 EIC. Moreover, Deuterium plasmas show a higher stability threshold for the 1/1 EIC than Hydrogen plasmas. The experimental data shows a larger time interval between EIC events as the power of the tangential NBI is increased providing that the perpendicular NBI power is at least 13 MW. This implies a stabilizing effect of the tangential NBI.

The Landau damping and resonant destabilization effects are added via the closure relation. The simulation results show that the n=1 EPM and n=2 Global AE (GAE) in Heliotron J plasma can be stabilized if the magnetic shear is enhanced at the plasma periphery by an increase (co-ECCD injection) or decrease (ctr-ECCD injection) of the rotational transform at the magnetic axis iota0. In the ctr-ECCD simulations, the EPM/AE growth rate decreases only below a given iota0, similar to the ECCD intensity threshold observed in the experiments. In addition, ctr-ECCD simulations show an enhancement of the continuum damping. The simulations of the LHD discharges with ctr-ECCD injection indicate the stabilization of the n=1 EPM, n=2 Toroidal AE (TAE) and n=3 TAE, caused by an enhancement of the continuum damping in the inner plasma leading to a higher EP beta threshold with respect to the co- and no-ECCD simulations.

We analyze the effects of the passing energetic particles on the resistive ballooning modes (RBM) and the energetic particle driven modes in JT-60SA plasma, which leads to the prediction of the stability in N-NBI heated plasma. The analysis is performed using the code FAR3d that solves the reduced MHD equations describing the linear evolution of the poloidal flux and the toroidal component of the vorticity in a full 3D system, coupled with equations of density and parallel velocity moments for the energetic particle (EP) species assuming an averaged Maxwellian EP distribution fitted to the slowing down distribution, including the effect of the acoustic modes. The simulations show the possible destabilization of a 3/2-4/2 TAE with a frequency (f) of 115 kHz, a 6/4-7/4 TAE with f=98 kHz and a 6/4 or 7/4 BAE with f=57 kHz in the ITER-like inductive scenario. If the energetic particle beta increases, Beta induced AEs (BAE), Toroidal AEs (TAE) and Elliptical AEs (EAE) are destabilized between the inner-middle plasma region, leading to the overlapping of AE of different toroidal families. If these instabilities coexist in the non-linear saturation phase the EP transport could be enhanced leading to a lower heating efficiency. For a hypothetical configuration based on the ITER-like inductive scenario but an center peaked EP profile, the EP beta threshold increases and several BAEs are destabilized in the inner plasma region, indicating an improved AE stability with respect to the off-axis peaked EP profile. In addition, the analysis of a hypothetical JT-60SA scenario with a resonant q=1 in the inner plasma region shows the destabilization of fishbones-like instabilities by the off-axis peaked EP profile. Also, the EPs have an stabilizing effect on the RBM, stronger as the population of EP with low energies (below 250 keV) increases at the plasma pedestal.

New simulations with the Kinetic Orbit Runaway electron (RE) Code KORC show RE deconfinement losses to the wall during plasma scrape off are the primary current dissipation mechanism in DIII-D experiments with high-Z impurity injection, and not collisional slowing down. The majority of simulations also exhibit an increase in the RE beam energy due to acceleration by the induced toroidal electric field, even while the RE beam current is decreasing. In this study, KORC integrates RE orbits using the relativistic guiding center equations of motion, and incorporates time-sequenced, experimental reconstructions of the magnetic and electric fields and line integrated electron density to construct spatiotemporal models of electron and partially-ionized impurity transport in the companion plasma. Comparisons of experimental current evolution and KORC results demonstrate the importance of including Coulomb collisions with partially-ionized impurity physics, initial RE energy, pitch angle, and spatial distributions, and spatiotemporal electron and partially-ionized impurity transport. This research provides an initial quantification of the efficacy of RE mitigation via injected impurities, and identification of the critical role played by loss of confinement due to plasma scrape off on the inner wall as compared to the relatively slow collisional damping.

The aim of the present study is to analyze the stability of the pressure gradient driven modes (PM) and Alfven eigenmodes (AE) in the Large Helical Device (LHD) plasma if the rotational transform profile is modified by the current drive of the tangential neutral beam injectors (NBI). This study forms a basic search for optimized operation scenarios with reduced mode activity. The analysis is performed using the code FAR3d which solves the reduced MHD equations describing the linear evolution of the poloidal flux and the toroidal component of the vorticity in a full 3D system, coupled with equations for density and parallel velocity moments of the energetic particle (EP) species, including the effect of the acoustic modes. The Landau damping and resonant destabilization effects are added via the closure relation. On-axis and off-axis NBI current drive modifies the rotational transform which becomes strongly distorted as the intensity of the neutral beam current drive (NBCD) increases, leading to wider continuum gaps and modifying the magnetic shear. The simulations with on-axis NBI injection show that a counter (ctr-) NBCD in inward shifted and default configurations leads to a lower growth rate of the PM, although strong n=1 and 2 AEs can be destabilized. For the outward shifted configurations, a co-NBCD improves the AEs stability but the PM are further destabilized if the co-NBCD intensity is 30 kA/T. If the NBI injection is off-axis, the plasma stability is not significantly improved due to the further destabilization of the AE and energetic particle modes (EPM) in the middle and outer plasma region.

We use the reduced MHD equations to describe the linear evolution of the poloidal flux and the toroidal component of the vorticity in a full 3D system, coupled with equations of density and parallel velocity moments for the energetic particles species, including the effect of the acoustic modes, diamagnetic currents and helical couplings. We add the Landau damping and resonant destabilization effects using a closure relation. The simulations with multiple NBI lines show three different regimes: the non damped regime where the multi beam AEs growth rate is larger compared to the growth rate of the AEs destabilized by the individual NBI lines, the interaction regime where the multi beam AEs growth rate is smaller than the single NBI AEs and the damped regime where the AEs are suppressed. Operations in the damped regime requires EP species with different density profile flatness or gradient locations. In addition, the AEs growth rate in the interaction regime is further reduced if the combined NBI lines have similar beam temperatures and the beta of the NBI line with flatter EP density profile increases. Then, optimization trends are identified in DIII-D high poloidal beta and LHD low density / magnetic field discharges with multiple NBI lines as well as the configuration requirements to operate in the damped and interaction regimes. DIII-D simulations show a decrease of the n=2 to 6 AEs growth rate and n=1 AE are stabilized in the LHD case. The helical coupling effects in LHD simulations lead to a transition from the interaction to the damped regime of the n=2,-8,12 helical family.

Alfven Eigenmodes (AE) can be destabilized during ITER discharges driven by neutral beam injection (NBI) energetic particles (EP) and alpha particles. The aim of the present study is to analyze the AE stability of different ITER operation scenarios considering multiple energetic particle species. We use the reduced magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) equations to describe the linear evolution of the poloidal flux and the toroidal component of the vorticity in a full 3D system, coupled with equations of density and parallel velocity moments for the energetic particles species including the effect of the acoustic modes. The AEs driven by the NBI EP and alpha particles are stable in the configurations analyzed, only MHD-like modes with large toroidal couplings are unstable, although both can be destabilized if the EP beta increases above a threshold. The threshold is two times the model beta value for the NBI EP and alpha particles in the reverse shear case, leading to the destabilization of Beta induced AE (BAE) near the magnetic axis with a frequency of 25-35 kHz and Toroidal or Elliptical AE (TAE/EAE) in the reverse shear region with a frequency of 125-175 kHz, respectively. On the other hand, the hybrid and steady state configurations show a threshold 3 times larger with respect to the model beta for the alpha particle and 40 times for the NBI EP, also destabilizing BAE and TAE between the inner and middle plasma region. In addition, a extended analysis of the reverse shear scenario where the beta of both alpha particles and NBI EP are above the AE threshold, multiple EP damping effects are also identified as well as optimization trends regarding the resonance properties of the alpha particle and NBI EP with the bulk plasma.

The aim of this study is to perform a theoretical analysis of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability and energetic particle effects on a LHD equilibria, calculated during a discharge where energetic-ion-driven resistive interchange mode (EIC) events were triggered. We use the reduced MHD equations to describe the linear evolution of the poloidal flux and the toroidal component of the vorticity in a full 3D system, coupled with equations of density and parallel velocity moments for the energetic particles species. We add the Landau damping and resonant destabilization effects using a closure relation. The simulations suggest that the helically trapped EP driven by the perpendicular neutral beam injector (NBI) further destabilizes the 1/1 MHD-like mode located at the plasma periphery (r/a = 0.88). If the beta of the EP driven by the perpendicular NBI is larger than 0.0025 a 1/1 EIC with a frequency around 3 kHz is destabilized. If the effect of the passing EP driven by the tangential NBI is included on the model, any enhancement of the injection intensity of the tangential NBI below beta=0.025 leads to a decrease of the instability growth rate. The simulations indicate that the perpendicular NBI EP is the main driver of the EIC events, as it was observed in the experiment. If the effect of the helical couplings are added in the model, an 11/13 EIC is destabilized with a frequency around 9 kHz, inward shifted (r/a = 0.81) compared to the 1/1 EIC. Thus, one possible explanation for the EIC frequency chirping down from 9 to 3 kHz is a transition between the 11/13 to the 1/1 EIC due to a weakening of the destabilizing effect of the high n modes, caused by a decrease of the EP drive due to a loss of helically trapped EP or a change in the EP distribution function after the EIC burst.

Alfven Eigenmodes and magneto-hydrodynamic modes are destabilized in DIII-D reverse magnetic shear configurations and may limit the performance of the device. We use the reduced MHD equations in a full 3D system, coupled with equations of density and parallel velocity moments for the energetic particles (with gyro-fluid closures) as well as the geodesic acoustic wave dynamics. The aim of the study consists in finding ways to avoid or minimize MHD and AE activity for different magnetic field configurations and neutral beam injection operational regimes. The simulations show at the beginning of the discharge, before the reverse shear region is formed, a plasma that is AE unstable and marginally MHD stable. As soon as the reverse shear region appears, ideal MHD modes are destabilized with a larger growth rate than the AEs. Both MHD modes and AEs coexist during the discharge, although the MHD modes are more unstable as the reverse shear region deepens. The simulations indicate the destabilization of Beta induced AE, Toroidal AE, Elliptical AE and Reverse Shear AE at different phases of the discharges. A further analysis of the NBI operational regime indicates that the AE stability can be improved if the NBI injection is off axis, because on-axis injection leads to AEs with larger growth rate and frequency. In addition, decreasing the beam energy or increasing the NBI relative density leads to AEs with larger growth rate and frequency, so an NBI operation in the weakly resonant regime requires higher beam energies than in the experiment. The MHD linear stability can be also improved if the reverse shear region and the q profile near the magnetic axis are in between the rational surfaces q=2 and q=1, particularly if there is a region in the core with negative shear, avoiding a flat q profile near the magnetic axis.

Alfven Eigenmodes are destabilized at the DIII-D pedestal during transient beta drops in high poloidal beta discharges with internal transport barriers (ITBs), driven by n=1 external kink modes, leading to energetic particle losses. There are two different scenarios in the thermal beta recovery phase: with bifurcation (two instability branches with different frequencies) or without bifurcation (single instability branch). We use the reduced MHD equations in a full 3D system, coupled with equations of density and parallel velocity moments for the energetic particles as well as the geodesic acoustic wave dynamics, to study the properties of the instabilities observed in the DIII-D high poloidal beta discharges and identify the conditions to trigger the bifurcation. The simulations suggest that instabilities with lower frequency in the bifurcation case are ballooning modes driven at the plasma pedestal, while the instability branch with higher frequencies are low n (n<4) Toroidal Alfven Eigenmodes nearby the pedestal. The reverse shear region between the middle and plasma periphery in the non-bifurcated case avoids the excitation of ballooning modes at the pedestal, although Toroidal Alfven Eigenmodes and Reverse Shear Alfven Eigenmodes are unstable in the reverse shear region. The n=1 and n=2 Alfven Eigenmode activity can be suppressed or minimized if the neutral beam injector (NBI) intensity is lower than the experimental value (betaf < 0.03). In addition, if the beam energy or neutral beam injector voltage is lower than in the experiment (Vth,f / VA0 < 0.2), the resonance between beam and thermal plasma is weaker. The n=3,4,5 and 6 AE activity can't be fully suppressed, although the growth rate and frequency is smaller for an optimized neutral beam injector operation regime. In conclusion, AE activity in high poloidal beta discharges can be minimized for optimized NBI operation regimes.

Energetic particle populations in nuclear fusion experiments can destabilize Alfv\' en Eigenmodes through inverse Landau damping and couplings with gap modes in the shear Alfv\' en continua. We use the reduced MHD equations to describe the linear evolution of the poloidal flux and the toroidal component of the vorticity in a full 3D system, coupled with equations of density and parallel velocity moments for the energetic particles. We add the Landau damping and resonant destabilization effects by a closure relation. We apply the model to study the Alfv\' en modes stability in Large Helical Device (LHD) inward-shifted configurations, performing a parametric analysis in a range of realistic values of energetic particle $β$ ($β_{f}$), ratios of the energetic particle thermal/Alfv\' en velocities ($V_{th}/V_{A0}$), magnetic Lundquist numbers ($S$) and toroidal modes ($n$). The $n = 1$ and $n = 2$ TAE are destabilized although $n = 3$ and $n = 4$ TAE are weakly perturbed. The most unstable configurations are associated with density gradients of energetic particles in the plasma core: TAE are destabilized even for small energetic particle populations if their thermal velocity is lower than $0.4$ times the Alfv\' en velocity. The frequency range of MHD bursts measured in LHD are $50-70$ kHz for $n=1$ and $60-80$ kHz for $n=2$ TAE, consistent with the model predictions.

Neoclassical transport in the presence of non-axisymmetric magnetic fields causes a toroidal torque known as neoclassical toroidal viscosity (NTV). The toroidal symmetry of ITER will be broken by the finite number of toroidal field coils and by test blanket modules (TBMs). The addition of ferritic inserts (FIs) will decrease the magnitude of the toroidal field ripple. 3D magnetic equilibria with toroidal field ripple and ferromagnetic structures are calculated for an ITER steady-state scenario using the Variational Moments Equilibrium Code (VMEC). Neoclassical transport quantities in the presence of these error fields are calculated using the Stellarator Fokker-Planck Iterative Neoclassical Conservative Solver (SFINCS). These calculations fully account for $E_r$, flux surface shaping, multiple species, magnitude of ripple, and collisionality rather than applying approximate analytic NTV formulae. As NTV is a complicated nonlinear function of $E_r$, we study its behavior over a plausible range of $E_r$. We estimate the toroidal flow, and hence $E_r$, using a semi-analytic turbulent intrinsic rotation model and NUBEAM calculations of neutral beam torque. The NTV from the $\rvert n \rvert = 18$ ripple dominates that from lower $n$ perturbations of the TBMs. With the inclusion of FIs, the magnitude of NTV torque is reduced by about 75% near the edge. We present comparisons of several models of tangential magnetic drifts, finding appreciable differences only for superbanana-plateau transport at small $E_r$. We find the scaling of calculated NTV torque with ripple magnitude to indicate that ripple-trapping may be a significant mechanism for NTV in ITER. The computed NTV torque without ferritic components is comparable in magnitude to the NBI and intrinsic turbulent torques and will likely damp rotation, but the NTV torque is significantly reduced by the planned ferritic inserts.

We present the field-line modeling, design and construction of a prototype circular-coil tokamak-torsatron hybrid called Proto-CIRCUS. The device has a major radius R = 16 cm and minor radius a < 5 cm. The six "toroidal field" coils are planar as in a tokamak, but they are tilted. This, combined with induced or driven plasma current, is expected to generate rotational transform, as seen in field-line tracing and equilibrium calculations. The device is expected to operate at lower plasma current than a tokamak of comparable size and magnetic field, which might have interesting implications for disruptions and steady-state operation. Additionally, the toroidal magnetic ripple is less pronounced than in an equivalent tokamak in which the coils are not tilted. The tilted coils are interlocked, resulting in a relatively low aspect ratio, and can be moved, both radially and in tilt angle, between discharges. This capability will be exploited for detailed comparisons between calculations and field-line mapping measurements. Such comparisons will reveal whether this relatively simple concept can generate the expected rotational transform.
