What does it mean to be Mexican American in Houston, TX?

For the Mendoza-Martinez family, the answer to this question is complicated and evolving. In this fascinating memoir, author Dr Louis Mendoza tells his family’s story over three generations, exploring the ongoing efforts to negotiate intense racialization in Texas. Examining questions of community, belonging and home, migrancy, and social strata, the book considers the interconnectedness of ethnic identity and place through the lens of lived experience.

Explicitly addressing the challenges of constructing—or reconstructing—a multi-generational family narrative when the traditional resources of family archives are limited, this memoir will enhance and illuminate courses in Latinx or Latin American studies, migrant studies, American studies, sociology, oral history, and cultural anthropology.

This chapter uses the concepts of belonging and cultural citizenship to examine how people of Mexican descent who have lived in the U.S. for multiple genera tions as well as more recent migrants make and sustain community. In particu lar, I focus on how Mexicans and Mexican Americans conceive of and practice citizenship to create mutually constitutive experiences of belonging and home, especially when they are neither fully socially integrated in the United States or their countries of origin. In this analysis of Mexican descent communities, the concepts of comitatus, community, and citizenship will be central because collectively they provide contextual and analytical lenses to examine Mexi cans' status as perpetual outsiders, their resilience against systemic violence, and their efforts to actively create and sustain community.

The poetry, memoirs, essays, letters, prison journalism, and other forms of writing by Raúl Salinas (1934–2008) were grounded in his commitments to social justice and human rights. He was an early pioneer of contemporary Chicano pinto (prisoner) poetry whose work was characterized by a vernacular, bilingual, free verse aesthetics. Alongside other notables like Ricardo Sánchez, Luis Talamentez, Judy Lucero, and Jimmy Santiago Baca, Salinas helped make Chicana and Chicano prisoner rights an integral part of the agenda of the Chicana/o Movement through his writing and activism while incarcerated (1959–1972) and following his release. He was also a prolific prose writer in prison, and much of his journalism, reflective life writing, essays, and letters from his archives were published following his release. As important as his literary and political production in prisons was for establishing his literary recognition, it is important to note that the scope of his writing expands well bey...

This essay examines how Latinoization, the cultural and social change resulting from the profound demographic shifts of Latino birthrate and migration, has created a new cultural geography in the Midwest. The project draws on original oral histories from Latina/o citizens and new immigrants, as well as non-Latino cultural mediators who have grappled with the challenges to social and economic integration resulting from real and perceived cultural differences. It discusses many examples where Latinos helped revitalized inner city neighborhoods and become an essential workforce of rural communities experiencing out-migration, even as they are often labeled as outsider and encounter regional cultural frameworks like Minnesota Nice that impede people’s recognition that Latino newcomers and the mainstream community share a mutual destiny.

Latina/o literature is a growing field of study. It is both an emerging literature and a rich historical one that continues to be documented and uncovered in archival and personal collections. The Oxford Encyclopedia of Latina and Latino Literature offers a sweeping introduction to a variety of genres and themes in Latina/o literature from its Latin American origins in the precolonial period to contemporary texts and perspectives. The collection illustrates the historical, social, and political contexts in which successive generations of Latina and Latino authors have written, exploring the interrelationship between geography, national origin, race, gender, sexuality, and other cultural and ethnic identities. Led by Editor in Chief Louis G. Mendoza and an editorial board of experts, this collection throws light not only on how Latina/o texts have evolved since the contact period, but also on how we have come to understand and conceptualize this work over the past three generations. ...

At the turn of both the 20th and 21st centuries the United States witnessed sweeping social, political, economic and demographic transformations, changes that were accompanied by a rise in xenophobia and a rhetoric that yoked social ills with foreigners and foreigners with germs and contagion.  Despite significant advancement of global health care in both eras, new immigrants have been and are consistently associated with germs and contagion and thereby maligned in the popular imaginary. This chapter explores how anti-immigrant rhetoric and policy have often been articulated in the media through an explicitly medical language framework, one in which the line between perceived and actual danger is slippery and lends itself easily to hysteria and hyperbole.  These powerful anti-immigration narratives that link foreigners to disease thrive despite facts that refute these claims. By examining how immigrants have been stigmatized as the source of a wide variety of physical and societal ills at critical junctures in national history, I also examine important questions about the shifting nature of citizenship and national belonging.

Mendoza and an editorial board of experts, including Arturo Arias,  Raul Coronado, Yolanda Martinez-San Miguel, Ben V. Olguin, and Sandra Soto, this collection throws light not only on how Latina/o texts have evolved since the contact period, but also on how we have come to understand and conceptualize this work over the past three generations. From the Chicana/o identity to Caribbean and Central American diasporic literature, from Latina/o letters to bilingual texts and graphic novels, the collection explores a variety of issues that are central to the 21st century's American experience, such as feminism, LGBTQA groups, indigeneity, environmental justice, social movements, migration, and US-Mexico borderlands. Each article paints a nuanced and in-depth portrait of Latina/o literary history in a dynamic, complex, and deeply engaging field of study that is at once highly popular, historical, and theoretical. One of the most extensive and detailed surveys of Latina/o literature to date, this encyclopedia shows the historical and cultural significance of this literary tradition in the American context, challenging readers to revisit conventional literary notions and expand the borders of American literature.
