The study focuses on the Third Book of Stromateis, which provides insight into the different Christian views on marriage at the end of the second century. Study of the Third Book of Stromateis also reveals Clement’s unique method of argument, by means of which he corrects the theological positions of his opponents. Last but not least, Clement’s discussions of family life provide a window onto the social life of the Late Empire from the point of view of a second-century Christian philosopher.

Colloquium Clementinum III: Clement of Alexandria’s Paedagogus
Nyíregyháza (Hungary), 20 – 22 April 2023
Clement of Alexandria's Paedagogus was written as basic instructions for an inexperienced Christian: it directs catechumens and neophytes to the person of Jesus Christ, assures them of God's care, gives very specific advice for daily life, and deals with important issues concerning theology and spirituality. During the conference, the following topics will be discussed: • the lifestyle and approach to body recommended in Clement's Paedagogus, • literary, philosophic and natural scientific sources of the ideas present in this writing, • Clement’s original theological concepts. Contributions comparing Clement's teaching in his Paedagogus with teaching of other early Christian authors are also welcome.
Speakers will include: Annewies van den Hoek Lenka Karfíková Emanuela Prinzivalli Jana Plátová Marco Rizzi Leonardo Lugaresi Vít Hušek
The conference languages are English, Italian and French. We intend the conference to become the basis for a collective monograph (written in English) on Clement's Paedagogus, which would be a useful source for readers of this work. The contributions can also be published in the Eastern Theological Journal, which publishes papers in English and in other world languages. PhD students are also invited to attend the conference.
Communication proposals, with an abstract of up to 300 words and a brief curriculum vitae, should be submitted by 31 October 2022, to ColloquiumClementinumIII@gmail.com. Please note that the time limit for each presentation is 20 minutes. The deadline for submission of the papers for publication in the collective monograph will be 30 June 2023.
Lunch and dinner is included for each participant on the conference days, and all participants will be invited to the closing dinner on Saturday 22 April. The organisers will be pleased to arrange individual transport from the airport (or city centre) in Debrecen or Budapest on Wednesday 19 April, on request. Conference fee: 60 Euros.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like us to arrange accommodation.

The writings of Plato and Philo of Alexandria testify that understanding the meaning of “place” is a recurrent problem for both philosophy and theology. Plato testifies to the serious difficulty of this issue with inferential, almost mystical silence, while Philo offers a confident explanation. Does the existence of beings depend on their having a place? Or does the existence of place depend on the existence of beings? Perhaps these were the questions that Clement had in mind when wrestling with the theme of place in John 1. In any case, it is a fact that, when Clement reflects on place, he relates it to the question of the existence of beings. This involves a train of thought composed of elements of physics, metaphysics, and theology that Clement believed pervaded the Prologue of John. Here the main character is the Divine Logos, who is the guarantor of both of place and existence.

It is a symbol thanks to which Clement was able to interpret the new identity of the Christian man. The cross is thus not only a sign of the theological teaching that explains partaking of Christ’s suffering, but as a reflection on the doctrinal debates of the second century, also a symbol of partaking of Christ’s divinity. In the case of our researched author, the cross is also an allegory of the method of Christian philosophy and of the weapon against Gnostic teachings.

During the conference, the following topics will be discussed:
• the lifestyle and approach to body recommended in Clement's Paedagogus,
• literary, philosophic and natural scientific sources of the ideas present in this writing,
• Clement’s original theological concepts.
Contributions comparing Clement's teaching in his Paedagogus with teaching of other early Christian authors are also welcome.
Speakers will include:
Annewies van den Hoek
Lenka Karfíková
Emanuela Prinzivalli
Jana Plátová
Marco Rizzi
Leonardo Lugaresi
Vít Hušek
