Immediately after Islam had emerged in the Arabian Peninsula in th... more MOSAIC IN ISLAMIC ARCHITECTURE Immediately after Islam had emerged in the Arabian Peninsula in the first half of the seventh century, it expanded into a vast geographical area in the first 100 years. The generation of its own cultural identity, correspondingly its religious, political expansion and strength occurred in that period, as well. It is appreciated that a style to be characterized as Islamic Art originated in the architectural works of art which belonged particularly to the Umayyad authority with the impact and contribution of the ancient indigenous elements. That art was advanced in subsequent periods and gained a unique feature especially with the Seljuks. In this study, it is discussed that the mosaic technique, whose origins can be traced to antiquity and experienced an extensive process throughout the Middle East, was implemented in Islamic architecture, such as mosques, palaces, and tombs. It attempted to introduce that the practice of those mosaics was developed according to the principles of Islamic faith by means of calligraphic bands, floral and geometrical arrangements in the process from its beginning until the extension of tilemosaic and tile techniques.

Dini ve siyasi yayılımı ve gücüne paralel olarak kendi kültürel kimliğinin oluşumu da bu dönem içinde gerçekleşir. Özellikle Emevi hakimiyeti dönemine ait mimari yapıtlarda, eski yerel unsurların da etkisi ve katkısıyla İslam Sanatı olarak nitelendirilebilecek üslubun oluştuğu anlaşılmaktadır. Devam eden dönemlerde bu sanat geliştirilmiş, özellikle Selçuklularla birlikte özgün bir karakter kazanmıştır. Bu çalışmada; kökeni antik çağlara kadar uzanan ve Ortadoğu coğrafyasında geniş bir kullanım süreci yaşayan mozaik tekniğinin, cami, saray, türbe gibi İslami yapılardaki uygulamaları ele alınmış; başlangıcından çini-mozaik ve çini tekniğinin yaygınlaşmasına kadar geçen süreçte, bu mozaiklerin İslam inancının prensiplerine göre şekillendirilerek ağırlıklı olarak kaligrafik kuşaklar, bitkisel ve geometrik düzenlemelerle kullanımı öne çıkan örneklerle tanıtılmaya çalışılmıştır. Lafz-ı mezburinde'l-baz Rumi lügatidir (Mütercim Asım: 2684); füseyfisâ: reng-a-reng boncuklar veya çakıl taşı ve sırça vesaire ile donatılmış satıh ki fr. " mozayik " denilir. [her ne kadar lisanımızda isti'mal olunmamış ise de, böyle bir lugata eşedd-i ihtiyacımız olduğundan kabulü elzemdir.] (Şemseddin Sami: 770); fusayfisâ: A sort of pearl or bead fixed on the inner walls of houses (Johnson 1852: 929).
