The research has yet to consider what factors buffer the negative outcomes of emotional labor? Accordingly, we examined the influence of surface acting as a mediator on the relationship between job demand and employee well-being and further investigated the moderating effect of emotional intelligence on the relationship between surface acting and employee well-being. We used two- wave data from a sample of 207 emergency medical technicians to test our hypotheses. We found that job demand has an indirect effect on job satisfaction and emotional exhaustion via surface acting. The results of moderated mediation shows that the negative relationship between surface acting and job satisfaction was low when emotional intelligence was high and the positive relationship between surface acting and emotional exhaustion was low) when emot...

Additionally, the moderating role of project team members’ emotional intelligence (EI) between despotic leadership and emotional exhaustion is also examined. Data were collected from the project-based employees working in telecommunications organizations (n = 250) using a time-lagged survey in three waves. The result indicates that despotic leadership has a significant negative influence on project success, and emotional exhaustion partially mediates this relationship. Moreover, conforming to a rare line of inquiry that there is a dark side to being emotionally intelligent, our findings show that the effect of despotic leadership style on emotional exhaustion is stronger when a project team member is highly emotionally intelligent. We...

This seriously influences the online retail industry in developing countries that are already struggling to move toward digital trading through e-business. Pakistan being a developing country is no exception, and it is, therefore, pertinent to examine factors that contribute to digital trading. Employing theories of reasoned action and the technology acceptance model, this study aims to investigate how personal innovativeness and perceived usefulness impact consumers’ online purchase intentions through a serial mediational model. The data were collected through an online survey from 410 respondents. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to test the proposed model. This study showed significant results for the direct effect of personal innovativeness and perceived usefulness on online purchase intentions as well as the indirect s...
This study investigated the effect of workplace loneliness on work-related subjective well-being ... more This study investigated the effect of workplace loneliness on work-related subjective well-being by proposing work engagement as an explanatory mechanism in the workplace loneliness—job dissatisfaction relationship. Moreover, the study examines the need to belong as a coping mechanism in the relationship between workplace loneliness and work engagement. Specifically, the study posits that workplace loneliness reduces the positive and fulfilling state of work engagement that in turn increases job dissatisfaction and that this mediation depends on the employee’s level of need to belong. Data were collected from employees (N = 274) working in diverse domestic and multinational organizations in Lahore, Pakistan. Results showed that workplace loneliness reduced the work engagement of lonely individuals that in turn increased their job dissatisfaction. However, the deleterious effect of workplace loneliness on work engagement was weaker for individuals having a higher need to belong. Thes...

Specifically, we tested a mediating mechanism, an interpersonal conflict that has received less consideration in the workplace incivility literature. The authors also tested the organizational climate (i.e. a resource) as a moderator in the perceived workplace incivility–employees’ deviant work behavior relationship.Design/methodology/approachTime-lagged research design was followed to explain the relationship of variables. Survey data were collected at time 1 and time 2 from 220 service sector working professionals to test the proposed model.FindingsThe findings suggest that intrapersonal conflict partially mediates the workplace incivility–deviant work behavior relationship. Further, the authors found that the harmful effects of workplace incivility on employees’ deviant work behavior attenuate in the...

The internet has been widely accepted in every modern society, and the act of purchasing products or services over the internet, known as online/internet shopping, has revolutionized business. This study was designed using the technology acceptance model and theory of reasoned action. This study identified important factors such as perceived awareness of security, perceived usefulness, personal innovativeness, and perceived ease of use in purchasing, together with the effects of these factors on online purchasing intentions and the mediating role of consumer attitudes toward online purchasing. The results show that the identified factors are positively and significantly related to consumer intentions and attitudes toward online purchasing. This study has the potential to guide online retailers and managers in expanding online pu...

Based on 453 responses from project team leader–project team member dyads working in a single organization, our findings suggest that servant leadership enhances project success predominantly by mitigating project work withdrawal, rather than accentuating work engagement. Additionally, when team members’ project identification is high, the servant leadership–work engagement relationship is weakened, whereas the servant leadership–project work withdrawal relationship is strengthened. We contribute to the nascent literature that positions servant leadership as an effective style in the project context.
