In practice, it leads to the acquisition of knowledge / skills and is often commodified by awarding certificates / degrees adapting to the demands of the labor market. Mezirow's transformative theory has influenced the field, educators, and researchers as well. Critical reflection constitutes a necessary condition for transformative learning and a term often found in adult and higher education and which is considered a critical aspect of personal, educational, and professional development. Mezirow and Brookfield are two important scholars who have explored transformative learning and critical reflection, presenting nevertheless differing views on the subject. Brookfield, interpreting the term critical as conceived by critical theory of the Frankfurt School, views the analysis of power, the uncovering of hegemony and ideology critique as an integral part of critical reflection and transformative learning. He argues that all interactions in adult education are framed by power, a view consistent with Freire who supports that no (educational) action is neutral and Foucault who, by redefining the concept of politics, expanded the influence and consideration of power relations in fields that until then were perceived as non-political. Thus, for Brookfield ideology does not concern just our beliefs about economic, social, and political systems but also shapes interpersonal relationships and the way we perceive and make sense of the world. Brookfield's position is at the same time narrower and broader than Mezirow's. Narrower because of its very focused interpretation of critical reflection and broader because this interpretation permeates all aspects of life and human action. In his view, critical reflection of assumptions is the only form of critical reflection. Mezirow, however, argues that critical reflection can also be implicit such as "when we mindlessly choose between good and evil because of our assimilated values" while when referring to critical reflection of assumptions (subjective framing) he distinguishes between many categories (narrative – systemic – organizational -moral/ethical – therapeutic - epistemic), with systemic critical reflection being closer to Brookfield's perception. Another divergence between the scholars’ views is their stance towards action. For Mezirow, making a decision constitutes an action in transformative learning and his perspective focuses more on the individual, pursues self-realization and progressive change of society. Brookfield argues that critical reflection is a collaborative endeavor, his view is critical/radical, and aims at profound and drastic social change where collective action is essential.

Second Chance Schools as an institution in Greece, (Law 2525/97) came to realize stated goals of lifelong learning (White Bible, 1995), which were basic principles of educational policy developed within the context of institutions and agencies of the European Union's strategy of further education and training, as well as the strategy to combat social exclusion through education (at least initially) and socio-cultural development. They are alternative public schools where their philosophy, structure and function are dictated by the needs, interests, capabilities and motivations of adult learners who are over eighteen years old, and they haven't completed compulsory education. The Schools aim for a comprehensive approach to their needs (Κόκκος, 1999). The SCS seek through leveraging diversity and the experiences of the trainees to encourage them to new learning experiences in order to lead them to the strengthening of critical reflection and self-reflection and to the "holistic reconsideration of the way they perceive, think, feel and act" (Kokkos, 2007, p.11), i.e. transformative learning. Adult learners attending the SCS carry a wide stock of experiences, which are a crucial factor in their learning, especially when many of those experiences are the product of an uncritical acceptance of the influences of socio-cultural environment that restrict how they think, act and feel and inhibit new ways of learning, perception and behavior. Therefore, the primary role of each adult educator is the personal empowerment and emancipation of the learners, and the enhancement of the framework of their problematic interpretations and beliefs. Instructors, undertake a leader role, which facilitates and strengthens the learning in order to contribute to the transformation of dysfunctional beliefs and assumptions, while transferring the power to the trainee group/class to help adult learners realize their potential to make, critically thinking, more informed choices (Mezirow, 2007, p.68). In recent years, there exists a significant amount of research on transformative learning in adults. Mezirow & ass. (2007) in their study illustrates the most advanced research paradigms that were conducted internationally as well as their contribution to the progress of the theory and practice of the transformative learning in diverse educational contexts. Additionally, in a recent study Taylor (2007) presents published research papers, and 45 unpublished research papers, mostly, doctoral dissertations, from the period of 1982 to 1998, while the study is complemented by subsequent investigations by Wilhelmson (2002), all of which are investigating the relationship of transformative learning and the lifestyle of adults and/or changes in their careers. These research papers cover a wide range of empirical data and focus on critical thinking, while they investigate the role of context in adult learning and other ways to learn, up to how transformative learning can be supported in an educational environment (D'Amato & Krasny, 2011; Kreber, 2006; Franz, 2005). There is also an increasing level of research concerning transformative learning of adults in Greece, mostly master

In the era of lifelong learning and education the critical reflection aims at the learner's emancipation and autonomy in order to gain better control of rapid change and facilitate decision making both in their personal and professional lives and public issues as well and thus it has become crucial for education (Franz, 2007; Kokkos, 2005; Jarvis & Griffin, 2003; Brookfield, 2005). In the last decades a wide range of researches study the interrelation between teachers' personal theories and practices in education (Brookfield, 2005; Merriam, 2002; Mezirow, 1991 & 2000; Gioti, 2010) and specifically the role of critical reflection, as a continuous process of reassessment and improvement of educational praxis and its underlying values, in the professional development of educators (McAteer & Dewhurst,

Both the PAEI and a researcher-created demographic sheet were sent to the overall population of state primary teacher counselors so as to explore the adult education philosophies that guide their educational theory and practice while implementing in-service teacher training programmes. The respond rate was very high 72,46% (N=179). Frequencies, means, correlational and multivariate analyses were used to describe and analyze the research results. It was shown that the most predominant philosophical preference of the counselors was: progressivism, followed by behaviourism, radicalism, liberalism, and finally, humanism. The ranges proved that the scoring patterns for the majority of the counselors could be described as eclectic. It was also examined whether there were differences in the counselors’ preference toward each of the five philosophical orientations according to their age, gender, studies and academic degrees, education or training in teacher education and/or adult education, and teaching experience in different groups and educational settings. Statistically significant differences were found.

Whereas they consider that training on issues related to the field of the 4th industrial revolution is important for their work. The university is considered to be the best institution for organizing training seminars. Also, teachers think that training should be optional, should last six months, and should be implemented with the use of a blended learning method (synchronous - asynchronous actions with a limited number of face-to-face sessions). The main training topics should be the new technologies and their use in education. Finally, there is a positive correlation between the demographic characteristics of the sample and the teachers' perceptions of the 4th industrial revolution and their training needs.

It takes many forms and is offered through a variety of means and methods and by a wide range of mainly private providers. that takes place in the leisure time of the participants. It has become one of the growing areas of Adult Education and lifelong learning, since its wide dissemination has also contributed to the emergence of the important function of leisure education in people's personal - and not only professional - development. In our study, we will briefly examine the concept of leisure time and its changing meaning during its historical evolution, the type of activities it includes and their providers, the motivations and barriers to participation in leisure activities, as well as new emerging trends and adversities in the wake of the post-economic crisis and in the aftermath post-Covid-19 pandemic era related to learning and education in leisure time.

The research data were collected from 422 teachers with the quantitative method and the use of a questionnaire. The results of the research show that the secondary education teachers of the sample have a low level of knowledge about the 4th industrial revolution.

The purpose of the dissertation was to explore the educational philosophy that establishes educational theory and guides the practice of Primary School Counselors as adult educators. The various philosophical currents of adult education have attempted to answer how to teach adults and how education functions as a social and state practice overall. Through this perspective, we studied the views of School Counselors, as a set of educational theories, beliefs, perceptions, ideologies and worldviews, which they themselves explicitly state that they adopt in their practice, but also apply intentionally to the decisions and initiatives of actions that they undertake daily during the exercise of their institutionally determined task of ...

To this end, we conducted a mixed methodology research (triangulation) by implicating both the students and the teachers of the institution. The data collection methods were: 7 semi-structured interviews with the teaching staff and student questionnaires (n=98). Results show that a lot of the features of teaching are in line with the principles of student-centered and adult learning. Students appear to be satisfied with the teaching and the overall learning experience. They state that the climate is positive, the teachers friendly and accessible. However, despite the use of many teaching techniques (discussion, brainstorming, working in groups), the results show that enriched presentation remains the technique most frequently used. Finally, a significant correlation was found between students' academic background (major) and the way they perceive teaching (teacher-centered or student-centered).

This resulted in an impressive rise of social movements during the period of 2009-2015. In this paper, we study the social movements' influence to an informal and collective type of learning which adults acquire from them, whether as direct and active participants or as indirect ones. In particular, we study their influence on the ability to reform the comformist character of everyday consciousness in the prevailing social reality and on the formulation of a consciousness that is emancipated from the dominant ideology and aims on social change. The questioning of the memorandum policies does not entail, in a self-fullfilling way, the awakening and social emancipation of the participants from the opposed movements. However, the crisis overthrows the limits of the operational efficiency and compromise of everyday consciousness, thus raising disorienting dilemmas and conflicts that demand reconsideration. These processes create the conditions for a transformative learning, providing the opportunity for a meaningful connection with the very essence of phenomena, in order to achieve knowledge and comprehension of social reality. It is a fact that may lead to an active involvement and conscious aspiration to change this reality.

SCSs adopt the principle of multiliteracies and critical literacies in order to fight social exclusion. Through the findings, what is confirmed to a large extent are the implementation of the premises and the guidelines of Curriculum Specifications (CS). Thus a more coordinative and animating role of the educator prevails, as well as the content’s adaption to the needs and interests of the learners, along with practices based on dialogue and communication, participation and collaboration. Finally, the aim is not only the language development of the learners, but also their personal emancipation and social empowerment, which are identified with the principles of a humanistic-progressive perspective for personal development and adaption to the given social reality.

Their student-centered approach and the theories they embrace are consistent with their teaching practice to a satisfactory degree (role, climate, teacher-student relationship, objectives, connection to reality). However, an issue detected is the relatively limited use of the most active teaching techniques.

We conducted 14 semi-structured interviews in spring of 2018 in the Municipality of Monemvasia in Greece. The adult participants were questioned about their viewpoint on leisure and the leisure education programs they chose (dance, theater, art, choir) and about the factors that either motivate or block their participation. Findings revealed the changing nature of leisure meaning in the period of economic crisis. Leisure has been seriously restrained and the most important motive to seek non-formal creative leisure activities in community-based programs is to become distressed and relaxed from the pressures of everyday life.

The findings concern the School Counselors' theories of action and theories-in-use upon the motivation, the obstacles and the individual differences in the learning of teachers, in the context of continuing education/training as it is conducted in the framework of their institutional role. The research outcome shows that Counselors' espoused theories draw mostly from radical and progressive educational philosophy of adult education, while their theories-in-use are controversial and eclectic, mainly grounded to a humanistic and progressive framework. Their theories-in-use emphasize to meet teachers' needs and instigate their learning providing positive motives and blunt the obstacles that result from their individual differences and the imposed institutional frame of teachers' training.
