The subject of this research is the relation between politics and ethics in the modern Dubrovnik drama, i.e. in dramatic texts arising of the period from the mid-19th to the first decades of the 20th century in Dubrovnik, the authors of which are people of Dubrovnik, and which are based on the old Dubrovnik literature, on the prevailing sense of particularism, and in the changed social conditions. First of all, we are interested in the way in which ideology influences the shaping of the dramatic works literary world, genre structure and characters, and in what way it relates to ethical opinions set forth in the plays. The analysis shows that the drama texts rely on the old Dubrovnik literature regarding the motives and the topos of Dubrovnik's political culture. The novelty compared to the old Dubrovnik literature is Yugoslav ideology, which is represented in line with the changed historical circumstances and the loss of freedom of Dubrovnik in the plays. Along with the voices of power, the voices of ethical dispute are present in the works, questioning the legitimization of vengeance and human sacrifice in the name of ideology. The texts which lack this ethical voice refer to a political discourse of low artistic value.

the relationship between them. The thesis of this paper is that the absence of the main characters and distinct characterisation in these works
derives from the rhetorical character of the composition on the one, and specific rhetorical strategies of the frontier of christendom, on the
other side. It turns out that Oriesntalism, which is conceived in this period, has a significant impact on the work of both authors. Image of
Turkey as other Gundulic largely takes from Sasin’s work. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the conceptualization of this rhetoric in
Gundulic’s epic and Sasin’s epic chronicle.

In this paper, it is demonstrated that the author manifests resistance towards the discourse of authorities and a critical antagonism towards common interpretations of the national ideologeme, such as: territory, liberty, family, rights and duties, whether ours and foreign. The author’s narrative strategy does not represent a new political doctrine or a positive political strategy, but a passive act of individual resistance to all ruling political doctrines, ideologies, and myths.
Serbian culture is deeply nationalized with regard to its experience and its understanding of the world. Language, religion, tradition, customs, mythology, scientific and notional awareness are all part of those indicators with help of which we can specify cultural belonging relatively objectively. However, a problem arises with their interpretation, which can be personal, group or national. Moreover, from a historical point of view, changes in particular periods can easily be observed.
In this play, history is, above all, exposed to depathetisation, with the emphasis on the realistic outcome of nationalistic concepts – the victims, who are after every war left without a real representative. The ideological response coresponds to the genre structure of the work, transgressing the genre conventions of melodrama and growing into a commentary of the mentality features.
Key words: national identity, ideologeme, authority, country, liberty, family, narrative strategy.

Starting from these observations, the paper explores the extent to which New Historicism truly represents a turning point and a novelty in the approach to a literary work. Confronting the views of the right New Historicism with the foundations of the New Rhetoric approach as well as the understanding of Claus Uhlig’s textual palingenesis, the author of the paper searches for new possibilities of literature rehabilitation and returning to the theory of literature.

Marxist literary criticism tended to vulgarize the drama by interpreting it as a patrician philippic against Ragusan wealthy commoners who, dissatisfied with their status, demanded greater participation in the public and political life in Dubrovnik. Close reading of the content confirms Dubravka’s alogical dramatic construction. Basing the article on more recent interpretations of the political-alegorical grounding of the play, the author establishes that Gundulić employed and at the same tame manipulated with the formal characteristics of a pastoral in order to emphasize ideological overtones which run through the play.

However, if it is used for ideological purposes, literature becomes a commonplace propaganda, an aesthetically empty piece of text. The relation between politics and literature is an issue that dates back from the time of Plato’s polemics, continues throughout centuries, finally becoming particularly topical during the twentieth century totalitarian political regimes. The aim of this paper is by observing the relation between literary creativity and ideological orientation in the example of the periodical Mladost, to demonstrate the influence of the ideological feature of literary criticism on literature, and, to try to substantiate the thesis on ideology as an integral part of literary structure. The research begins with the works of literary criticism, notes, reviews, feuilletons which represent a particular literary concept.
