The aim of our study was to investigate the possible protective role of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) admi... more The aim of our study was to investigate the possible protective role of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) administration on ascorbic acid (AsA), vitamin E (vit E), and lipid peroxide (LP) concentrations in the blood of rats chronically treated with cadmium. Results were compared to those obtained in control animals, as well as to those obtained in animals treated with olive oil. Compared to that of the control animals, the AsA concentration was significantly increased in rats treated with CoQ10 and olive oil, whereas vit E concentration was significantly increased in animals treated with cadmium, CoQ10, or cadmium + CoQ10. A significant decrease in LP concentration was noted in animals treated with cadmium or with cadmium + CoQ10o, whereas a significant increase was seen in animals treated with olive oil. Compared to that of the animals treated with olive oil, the ascorbic acid concentration was significantly decreased in rats treated with cadmium or with cadmium + CoQ10, whereas vit E concentration was significantly increased in animals treated with cadmium, CoQ10, or cadmium + CoQ10. LP concentration was significantly decreased in rats treated with cadmium, CoQ10, or cadmium + CoQ10. Our study showed that CoQ10 administration in rats chronically exposed to exogenous cadmium exerts beneficial effects on the nonenzymatic components of the antioxidant defense system, such as AsA and vit E, resulting in a decreased concentration of LP in the blood.

Cd exposure (15 mg Cd/kg b.m./day as CdCl(2) for 4 weeks) resulted in increased lipid peroxidation (LP) in both organs (p<0.005 and p<0.01). Vitamin C (Vit C) was decreased in the liver (p<0.005), whereas vitamin E (Vit E) was increased in the liver and kidneys (p<0.005 and p<0.05) of Cd-exposed animals. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities were decreased in both tissues (p<0.05 and p<0.005), whereas catalase (CAT) activity was decreased only in liver (p<0.005). The activity of cytosolic antioxidative defence enzymes in the liver and white muscle of thinlip ... more The activity of cytosolic antioxidative defence enzymes in the liver and white muscle of thinlip gray mullet (Liza ramada Risso) were compared in winter and spring in the Adriatic Sea. Activity of antioxidative enzymes is functionally organized due to metabolic demands: analyses of variance and correlation analysis revealed tissue- and seasonal- specific organization of antioxidative enzymes. In winter GST activity increased in both tissues compared with spring. At the same time decreased GSH-Px and GR activities were observed and this effect was more pronounced in liver then in white muscle. From correlation analyses it is concluded that the antioxidative components correlate, but the composition of the antioxidative defence system is different in respect to season and tissue. This means that the antioxidative defence system reorganizes its structure due to oxidative demands and to protect the tissues against reactive oxygen species and to establish homeostasis. Male Wistar albino rats (3 months old) were treated with cadmium (0.4 mg Cd/kg b.m., i.p., 24 h before the experiment) or with vitamin E + Cd (20 IU Vit E/kg b.m., i.m., 48 h + 0.4 mg Cd/kg b.m., i.p., 24 h before the experiment). The hematological parameters were assessed: red blood cell counts, hematocrit value and hemoglobin concentration were significantly decreased in the blood of Cd-treated rats. Intoxication with cadmium was also followed by significantly increased lipid peroxide concentrations. Chronic echinococcocal disease is the parasite human disease caused by the penetration of larval ... more Chronic echinococcocal disease is the parasite human disease caused by the penetration of larval (asexual) stages of the canine tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus) in the liver of humans. After the penetration of the parasite, the host organism react by activating complement-depending immune response. The aim of this study was to elucidate the influence of larval form of Echinococcus granulosus in the liver on the activity of antioxidative defense enzymes in the blood of patients before and after the surgical intervention. We investigated the activity of antioxidative defense enzymes: copper/zinc containing superoxide dismutase (CuZn SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) in the blood of patients before and after the surgical intervention in respect to the controls, clinically healthy persons. Our results showed that the activity of the GSH-Px was significantly decreased in the plasma of the patients with echinocococal disease before the surgery in respect to the controls. The activity of GST was significantly higher in the blood of the patients after the surgery in comparison to the controls. Chronic liver echinoccocal disease caused significant changes of some antioxidative defense enzymes, first of all Se-dependent enzyme GSH-Px, which could be a suitabile biomarker in the biochemical evaluation of the disease. This work represents a first comprehensive study of the activity of antioxidative defense enzymes in cronic liver echinococcocosis in the patients before and after the surgical intervention in respect to the clinically healthy persons.
This study investigated seasonal variations of antioxidant defense enzyme activities: total, mang... more This study investigated seasonal variations of antioxidant defense enzyme activities: total, manganese, copper zinc containing superoxide dismutase (Tot SOD, Mn SOD, CuZn SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione reductase (GR) and biotransformation phase II enzyme glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity in the liver and white muscle of red mullet (Mullus barbatus). The investigations were performed in winter and spring at two localities: Near Bar (NB) and Estuary of the River Bojana (EB) in the Southern Adriatic Sea. At both sites, Mn SOD, GSH-Px, GR and GST activities decreased in the liver in spring. In the white muscle, activities of Mn SOD, GSH-Px, GR and GST in NB decreased in spring. GR decreased in spring in EB, while CAT activity was higher in spring at both sites. The results of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) based on correlations indicated a clear separation of various sampling periods for both investigated tissues and a marked difference between two seasons. Our study is the first report on antioxidant defense enzyme activities in the red mullet in the Southern Adriatic Sea. It indicates that seasonal variations of antioxidant defense enzyme activities should be used in further biomonitoring studies in fish species.
We examined the concentrations of vitamin E (vit E), sulphydryl groups (-SH), total protein and p... more We examined the concentrations of vitamin E (vit E), sulphydryl groups (-SH), total protein and protein electrophoretic profiles in the hepatopancreas, the gills and muscle of three freshwater crayfish species: Noble crayfish (Astacus astacus), stone crayfish (Austropotamobius torrentium) and spiny cheek crayfish (Orconectes limosus). Vit E concentration in the hepatopancreas of O. limosus was lower compared to A. astacus, while in the gills of O. limosus it was lower compared to both A. astacus and A. torrentium. The concentration of -SH groups was lower in the hepatopancreas of A. astacus compared to A. torrentium and O. limosus. In the gills of A. astacus and A. torrentium the concentration of -SH groups was higher compared to O. limosus. Protein concentration was higher in the hepatopancreas of A. torrentium compared to A. astacus and O. limosus. A lower protein concentration in muscle of A. torrentium was found compared to O. limosus and A. astacus. Electrophoretic analysis of proteins indicated species and tissue specifities between investigated crayfish species. Our results represent the first study of its kind and provide the basis for future studies that will consider our reported parameters as potential biomarkers for biomonitoring of basic environmental conditions and some anthropogenic impacts.
