This article explores the development of the Junior OTC in the years before the Great War.  It argues that the Junior OTC was not the failure that it is sometimes portrayed to be and that it provided effective and integrated training for the boys who went on to be Junior Officers between 1914 and 1918.

Timothy Halstead was educated at Uppingham and for studied for an MA in British First World War Studies at the University of Birmingham.  His MA dissertation examined public school ethos in the Great War using Uppingham as a case study.  He has had papers published on Uppingham in War and Society (August 2015) and on the Junior OTC before the Great War in the British Journal for Military History (February 2017). He has recently completed A School in Arms:  Uppingham and the Great War which will be published in October 2015. Future publications also include a chapter on the British Army’s junior officer corps in 1916 in a volume edited by Dr Spencer Jones.  He is a member of the British Commission of Military History and Treasurer of the Army Records Society.  When he is not researching and writing about military history he advises on data protection matters.

This thesis presents the history of Oneness Pentecostalism in the Philippines for the first time. It traces the origins, development and current state of this movement. This work will attempt to supply that information, and do so in a manner that recognizes the vital roles of the Filipinos. It argues that schism within the movement was unavoidable due to historical and cultural predispositions of the Filipinos when combined with the paternal methods of the missionaries, and the schismatic nature of Pentecostalism. Important leaders are examined and presented with heretofore-unpublished details of their lives and works, including missionaries and national leaders such as Diamond A. Noble and Wilde Almeda. Some of the many organizations are studied from the perspective of schism and success, and a summary of the entire movement is offered with an analysis as to why people have migrated into it and within it. It attempts to present a way of understanding Oneness Pentecostalism in the Philippines through the examination of schism; understanding that may contribute to a global understanding of the Oneness movement, or even of Pentecostalism as a whole.

Paper presented during annual Challenge Week at the Apostolic School of Theology (now Wilson University) in Elk Grove, California 30 September 2011. The presentation challenges a prevailing leadership paradigm in a leading Oneness Pentecostal organization.

Paper presented to the Centre for Pentecostal and Charismatic Studies at the University of Birmingham, UK 30 September 2014. This paper highlights the difficulties of researching Oneness Pentecostalism (or any movement considered unorthodox), and the suggested methods for doing so.

Paper presented to the Centre for Pentecostal and Charismatic Studies at the University of Birmingham, UK 29 September 2015. The paper addresses the phenomenon of visibly seen fire resting upon places where people are being filled with the Holy Spirit baptism. It goes on to compare the visible fire with the invisible infilling of the Spirit, evidenced by tongues.

Paper presented to the Centre for Pentecostal and Charismatic Studies at the University of Birmingham, UK 30 September 2014. As the title suggests, the paper suggests certain similarities shared between Oneness Pentecostals and Catholics, Evangelicals and Reform theology, as well as Islam and Judaism, that is not shared by the wider trinitarian Pentecostal movement, thus seeing the possibility of Oneness Pentecostalism being a bridge to those religions in ways that trinitarian Pentecostalism cannot.

In 2011 the US administration announced its intention to rebalance its foreign policy towards the Asia-Pacific region.  News of this change in strategy received mixed responses in Europe, where since 1949 the Atlantic Alliance has been considered the only viable and credible instrument of collective military power in the region. 
The proposed US rebalance has resulted in calls for a reappraisal of the role of Europe as an international actor in the security arena.  However, the only potential future alternative, the EU, is itself is creaking under the pressure of institutional fault lines and the sovereign debt crisis.  EU collective military action is currently limited to low intensity operations and ‘soft power’ missions; it is therefore in no position to fill the vacuum of any strategic withdrawal of America from the region.  Furthermore, while Europe is currently peaceful, it exists in a tough and volatile neighbourhood in which the use or threat of force remains an essential instrument of policy. 
Within this difficult context, the UK and France have recently cemented enhanced levels of operational cooperation through the 2010 Lancaster House treaties.  As the US shift in strategy develops, NATO stands to benefit greatly from the continued cooperative leadership of these two nations.  However, if the rebalance, or any future prospect of war in the Pacific, leads to US strategic disengagement from Europe, the options for France and the UK to act alone, as a partnership, or even through the EU will be severely limited.  NATO will remain the instrument of choice.  Therefore the overall aim of the Anglo-French alliance, as the rebalance develops, must be to build on existing successes in order to elevate the partnership to a truly strategic level, the influence of which can be brought to bear in order to shore up NATO on both sides of the Atlantic for the benefit of America and Europe alike.
