Hotel industry has a role to play mitigating climate change by reducing carbon emissions. This article explores the energy saving potentials in hotels by simulating several currently available scenarios at different climates by using methodical and iterative processes to evaluate potential decisions and achieve long-term goals. The information provided in this research work is based on a review of relevant literature and the results of EQUEST simulations for 3 hotels certified with LEED V3 across Turkey. Three locations were selected to represent the three climate zones in Turkey. Green criterias are evaluated according to LEED V3 certification system. Based on the findings presented in this paper, it is suggested there exists significant energy savings potential for the Turkey’s hotel industry if hotels are designed and built with sustainability principles. The main finding after compairing the three hotel...

It means that current carbon dioxide concentrations are accurately observed, but the root causes and their potential solutions against global warming fall short of achieving the goals of the Paris agreement by almost 45% in terms of decarbonization efforts, as shown in this paper. This result applies to all activities, including the green facility concept. In this respect, the primary aim of this paper is to raise awareness about the essence of the Second Law of Thermodynamics in expanding the green facility concept to reach more effective and sustainable rating methodologies concerning the climate crisis. A new evaluating and rating model with a set of exergy-based green building metrics that relate additional carbon dioxide emissions to irreversible exergy destructions has been developed. Examples about apparently green buildings according to the First Law of Thermodynamics are given by showing that these buildings are not green due to additional carbon dioxide emissions responsibility due to exergy destructions. An airport terminal building case is elaborated. It has been shown that although part of the electricity comes from a third-party wind energy provider, it ends up with carbon dioxide emissions responsibility because it is not entirely used in exergy-rational demand points and compares less favorably with an on-site cogeneration system using natural gas by about 30% more emissions responsibility. The results and derivations of new metrics are discussed, which shed light on adding new criteria to existing green building certification programs.

The construction sector’s sense of social responsibility is also generating a demand for certification systems to measure the environmental performance of buildings. This paper summarizes the approach used by some of these rating methods, demonstrates a comparative approach between these rating systems, and discusses the minimum conditions available in Turkey that will enable the effective use of these standards. The authors aim to provoke a discussion about whether Turkey needs its own green building accreditation system. They suggest developing a system which better aligns with sustainability principles and free flows of information based on the lessons learnt from other certification systems.

Water scarcity may therefore go beyond having important consequences for people, society and ecological systems but may also pose a threat to economic growth. Optimizing water management systems like rainwater harvesting (RWH) and utilization is an environmentally sound solution for single-family residences. A RWH system can alleviate the impact of stormwater runoff, save potable water, reduce energy use, and can contribute to groundwater preservation. Rainwater can provide an important source of drinking water with appropriate treatment as well as a useful source of water for blending with other water sources to reduce the levels of contaminants of health concern, such as arsenic and fluoride. Due to the green building movement, RWH systems are becoming more popular in the US and other countries.

Because earthquake engineering is experience-driven, the only time we can truly study the engineering effects of large earthquakes is when they occur. Each earthquake functions as a lab, a unique earthen university that helps us to discover more about earthquakes, how they function, and what they can do. The earthquake that struck on August 17 southeast of Izmit in Turkey can teach us much, for there are numerous corrolations between the North Anatolian fault and the San Andreas fault in California.

For this purpose, an experimental room is selected and heated to a high degree and then left for cooling, during which the reduction in the room temperature is measured with time. The time–temperature record provides the basis for determining the heat storage and heat conductivity coefficients through an objective standard curve matching procedure as the main context. These coefficients help to calculate the heat performance of a single room and, accordingly, the whole building, depending on its surrounding environment, construction material, volume and meteorological conditions. The proposed methodology depends on the one-dimensional heat flow event assuming that the construction material is homogeneous and isotropic and that the heat scatters uniformly in the room. The novelty in the paper is the standard curve for time–temperature d...
