For the first time, this volume brings together an international group of experts on the topic of early modern military encampments in Northwestern Europe. Despite the flourishing of conflict archaeology across the continent, the discipline lacks a consistent terminology and adequate typology for describing and interpreting the large variety of structures in encampments and the finds they contain. On a methodological level, it remains difficult to detect these large-scale but low-impact military features in the small windows offered by trial trenching. Many of these sites go unrecognized, as a result of their ephemeral nature and lack of comparative framework and are therefore subsequently destroyed. The authors in this book take on this challenge, giving an overview of the documents, features and finds that are linked to military encampments and the methodologies that can be applied for their identification and interpretation

Although we have only limited knowledge of the Virgin
Tower's soils archive, it still provides a useful contribution
to the study of this architectural monument. This article
gives a summary of observations during small-scale
archaeological research by the Antwerpse Vereniging
voor Bodem- en Crotonderzoek (Antwerp association
for soil and cave research) in the early 1980's as well as
by the Flanders Heritage Agency during the restoration
works in 2013.
The first discovery were square foundations, probably
remains of defensive platforms. Secondly the exterior
walls seem to have been covered with ironstone
parament. Then late mediaeval pottery and kitchen
garbage was discovered in the layers of debris around
the construction, probably - at least partially - thrown
out through a latrine. Finally the excavations and site
supervision gave insight into the consecutive layers in
the tower's immediate vicinity. Underneath the layers
of debris are deposits of the Demer river's flooding.
Underneath is an organic, grey-black layer, possibly
remains of a moat as represented on a 16th century
map by Jacob van Deventer.

Due to its geographical and political position, Belgium was centuries on end the scene of many battles. Sometimes taking up to several months, armies travelled through and camped within the current geopolitical territory of Belgium. Archaeological research allows us to study among other things daily
life, logistics and armaments of former soldiers as well as the composition and organization of armies. It also allows us to gain understanding in their military actions. Until recently, these temporary camp sites were rarely found during archaeological research in Belgium. At least that's how it seemed. Since more attention has been paid worldwide to this type of context, a number of interesting sites were also discovered in Belgium. The archaeological (pre–)investigation of temporary military camps requires a specific approach consisting of a custom methodology and specific research questions. Moreover, it requires a custom mindset during fieldwork as well as post–excavation interpretation. The lecture aims to tackle the previous aspects in the archaeological evaluation of temporary military camp, using the results and experiences from recent archaeological research in Belgium.
