Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:03, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi,
I relicensed this picture, using Wikimedia-screenshot, the license tag for Wikimedia projects screenshots.
This license supersedes the one you selected as there aren't elements on this picture giving you copyright, as it's a screenshot of a zh.wikipedia without no personal addition. --Dereckson (talk) 16:00, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Notification about possible deletion
[edit]Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.
If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Autopatrol given
[edit]Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. -- RE rillke questions? 15:09, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

File tagging File:Nanjing Metro Cable-stayed bridge 01.jpg
[edit]This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Nanjing Metro Cable-stayed bridge 01.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Nanjing Metro Cable-stayed bridge 01.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

- Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
- State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
- If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
- Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
- Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.
If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.
It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.
You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.
Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:SOSO街景视图覆盖地区.png, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.
If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Regarding your deletion request at -hans, I've done it. In order to successfully fallback to Template:Community tabs/zh on both the zh-hans and zh-hant versions of the Village Pump I had to make some related changes:
- I switched Commons:互助客栈/Header to use instead of Community tabs/zh-hans.
- I changed Template:社群導航 into a redirect to Community tabs/zh instead of using its own code (see page history).
- I changed Template:社區導航 from a redirect to Template:社群導航 to instead redirect to Template:Community tabs/zh.
- I changed Template:社区导航 from a redirect to Template:Community tabs/zh-hans to instead redirect to Template:Community tabs/zh. It looks like Template:社区导航 could probably be deleted, because it does not appear to be used.
However, I don't read Chinese, so I'd appreciate it if you could verify that everything is working OK. —RP88 (talk) 20:27, 13 December 2015 (UTC)
- Hmm.. I wasn't confident in the two zh-hant related changes I made, so I reverted my changes to Template:社群導航 and Template:社區導航 (please feel free to undo my self-reverts if my fixes to those pages were actually correct). —RP88 (talk) 20:52, 13 December 2015 (UTC)
- It seems the main issue is that some other non-translation-enabled translated pages done by creating separate pages are transcluding these translation pages. Currently, source code of Template:Community_tabs/zh is in zh-hans. Two of four tabs point to such non-translation-enabled translated pages. zh-hans versions of them are transcluding Template:Community_tabs/zh and seem working correctly now. zh-hant versions are using home-made translation in Template:社群導航 and need fixing. Liangent (talk) 23:19, 13 December 2015 (UTC)
- I made a copy of Template:Community_tabs/zh at Template:社群導航 and changed text to zh-hant. I think all pages are displayed correctly now although the solution might not be perfect. Liangent (talk) 23:29, 13 December 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you, I appreciate you taking a look at this. —RP88 (talk) 23:41, 13 December 2015 (UTC)
- If you are interested in adding Chinese translations to templates, PD-old-warning-text gets shown on millions of file pages, and is incompletely translated into Chinese. It's a protected template, so fixes have to be suggested on its talk page (via Edit request). Let me know if you'd like other suggestions for templates to look at (e.g. PD-Art-two, Licensed-PD, Licensed-PD-Art). —RP88 (talk) 23:59, 13 December 2015 (UTC)
- It seems zh-hant translations exist there. You can just feed them to Google Translate (choose Chinese -> Chinese (Simplified)) and results would be almost perfect (at least usable). Liangent (talk) 00:51, 14 December 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the tip, that sounds useful. However, the last two LangSwitch groups at PD-old-warning-text are only in English, so your tip won't work for those two. —RP88 (talk) 00:58, 14 December 2015 (UTC)
- I scanned the whole page and found that all translations marked as zh-hans are actually in zh-hant... zh-hans translations of new strings are listed below and use Google Translate to turn them into zh-hant. Liangent (talk) 01:55, 14 December 2015 (UTC)

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:Np88 support.jpg
[edit]This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Np88 support.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |
