Despite the importance of the senses in human experience, archaeology has generally neglected the sensory dimension of the material world. In response to this lacuna, the contributions to this volume incorporate all the senses in imaginative scenarios, in order to stimulate new ways of seeing and conceptualising archaeology and bring back the “self” to this science.
The international character of the essays brought together here, including researchers and case studies from across the globe, provides a variety of perspectives on this topic from a number of scales of analysis. The book will appeal to a wide range of readers, including academic researchers and the general public concerned with archaeology, history, anthropology, and sociology, and will provide readers with a greater understanding of the dynamics of the senses, the relationship between narratives and societies, and the cultural world.

The history of military repression in Latin America in the 1960s-1980s has been particularly challenging to study, with many holes in the historic accounts. Several Latin American dictatorships emerged during this period, particularly during the Cold War and the Cuban Revolution. Military regimes remained in power for decades, until internal and international changes allowed democracy to take over a firm hold. Due to military and governmental upheaval, written sources on clandestine repression are scarce and fragmentary, with many of these sources destroyed deliberately by repressive governments. New archaeological methods must be employed to reconstruct the true history of this period, helping shed light on repressive mechanisms, to recover missing history. Not only do the contributions of this important volume shed light on the specific case of Repression in Latin America, but the techniques described will be a valuable resources of information for archaeologists working to reconstruct other historical periods without reliable written sources, and shed light on the nature of political repression of worldwide.

In this chapter we discuss the material dimension of the Anthropocene in Antarctica from an archaeological point of view. First, we describe our initial approaches to the subject, when we were still constrained by an orthodox understanding of the material world. Second, we critically reflect on our previous work and explore new possibilities for analysis, considering a challenging definition of the material world, bodily experience, and the interconnectedness of the webs of life.

Cook felt that his ambition had led him “… not only farther than any other man had been before, but as far as I think it possible for man to go …” (Beaglehole, 1955-74: Vol. 2, 30 Jan 1774).
