On the one hand, data on their biological endowments, such as in biometrics or measurements of organic processes with biomedicine devices. On the other hand, data about their "forms of life": habits, opinions, even emotions, such as in data mining. Between "fingerprint" and "digital footprint", then, is stretched out one of the main lines of force of the techno-scientific intelligibility grid about what we are and what we could be. I will discuss three strategies with which some contemporary artists appropriate the new technologies for recording information from living bodies to unveil critically the mechanisms of capture of individuals and individuations they realize. In the end, I will resituate this question: what is at stake in the incitement to understand ourselves as a "data set"?

At the same time, population density and social inequalities grew as never before. The coronavirus pandemic is a consequence of the combination of these vertigos: a “normal accident” of this era, which I call Tecnocene, which has among its key milestones the Chernobyl nuclear accident, the attack on the Twin Towers and deployment by Y2K. Life on the planet is at stake and will be for hundreds of generations. A global politics of risk control through cooperation becomes the only vital politics, or affirmative biopolitics, that we could consider reasonable.

On the one hand, data on their biological endowments, such as in biometrics or in genetic data banks. On the other hand, data about their "forms of life": habits, affective relations, opinions and even emotions about different events, such as in data mining. Between "fingerprint" and "digital footprint", then, is stretched out one of the main lines of force of the techno-scientific and governmental intelligibility grid about what we are and what we could be. . At one of its poles, the meticulous identification of the bodies; at the other, the elaboration of behavioral profiles based on statistical correlations that "occur". On the one hand, the actual or possible observation of a biological individual; on the other hand, the construction of a statistical simulation of what an identity could be , which functions as a reductive but highly effective mirror. In this context, some contemporary artists attempt to focus on these methods of capturing individuals and individuations critically , as the Heather Dewey-Hagborg has done in her pieces Stranger visions and Be invisible, regarding biological surveillance. Others allude to them, questioning their procedures and speculating about the possible errors that may emerge from the technologies themselves. Such is the case of the italian Emilio Vavarella, in pieces like Digital Pareidolia: A Personal Index of Facebook's Erroneous Portraits. I will propose a brief analysis of these works in light of the processes described above, seeking to describe their artistic strategies, to understand their critical potential, and to consider the paradoxes they do not fail to elicit.

In recent decades, a significant part of public and private governmental efforts has been devoted... more In recent decades, a significant part of public and private governmental efforts has been devoted to developing technologies to collect and analyze data about living beings.

Talking about "forms of life", Lash suggests, implies positioning oneself on the crossroads between natural-biological and socio-cultural realities (Lash, 2002: 40). And referring to "technological forms of life" implies including a third term in that scene, technique, which enters a composite regimen with the other two and points toward a movement of action "at a distance", beyond the anthropomorphic limits of the own body. In that book, Lash put that term in the scene, but did not develop it further than a few paragraphs. I intend to deepen that notion sketched out by Lash succinctly, since I consider it particularly fruitful due to various reasons. Mainly because it allows to highlight the intimate connection between two processes that have been frequently analyzed separately: on one side, the progressive politicization of biological life (or biologization of politics; that is, the biopolitical thesis developed from certain writings, courses and conferences dictated by Michel Foucault in the decade of 1970) and, on the other side, the growing technification of productive processes, of human capacities and even of the modes of life. Synthetically, the process of technification in its restricted aspect appears, in our age, bound to the extension over the human life and body of principles regarding autonomization, improvement, optimization and individual responsibilization regarding the caretaking of the psycho-physical endowment (of inherited or acquired "human capital"), characteristic of a particular combination of the technical industrial-capitalist code (Feenberg, 2002) and the emerging modes of neoliberal governmentality.
