Sometimes the nexus between development ideas can seem contradictory. In 1983 Cavin Kare introduced shampoo sachets in rural India coining the term ‘sachet revolution’ where products are made available in small quantities at affordable prices. Unilever and Procter & Gamble adopted the marketing strategy and today 87% of shampoo alone is sold in sachets in rural Indian markets. On the one hand the shampoo sachet brings the aspirations of ‘development’, while on the other, it creates mass scale unrecyclable packaging waste that gets disposed in local residential areas, making the water, land and air unhealthy to live in. Might obliquity answer this catch-22 and provide a solution to this larger systemic problem?

If the bottom of the pyramid is to be equipped to bring the next wave, other parts of the puzzle need to be obliquely addressed. Based in Perumugai, a village in South India, this study uses auto-ethnography to examine the gap in reality that prevents progress. Designing oblique methods for awareness toward progress, this project focuses on interdisciplinary communication methods to nudge community into a state of confidence to initiate change in their community.

Labmovel is a platform for sharing art and knowledge that works using digital media activities and workshops on the street in places where institutional arts are scarce. The lab’s base is a modified Kombi, a Safari VW Bus, whose goal is to take advantage of mobility to expand and recognize the concepts of art and culture outside of traditional spaces, reaching various communities in underprivileged areas. Curated by Gisela Domschke and Lucas Bambozzi, Labmovel invited artists to experiment with the public in various environments with the creation as well as publishing of shared production.

Labmovel é uma plataforma para compartilhamento de arte e conhecimento que atua por meio de atividades com mídias digitais e workshops de rua em lugares onde há escassez de oferta artística institucional. A base do laboratório é uma Kombi modificada com o objetivo de aproveitar a mobilidade para expandir e reconhecer os conceitos de arte e cultura fora dos espaços tradicionais, alcançando várias comunidades em áreas desprivilegiadas. Sob a curadoria de Gisela Domschke e Lucas Bambozzi, os artistas convidados do Labmovel experimentam junto ao público de ambientes diversos tanto a criação quanto a veiculação da produção compartilhada.

Event that brought together 55 artists, designers and researchers from Brazil, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, to discuss perspectives on multidisciplinary collaborations on environmental issues (CCSP/MIS, 2009). Curators: Bronac Ferran (RCA, London), Annet Wolfsberger (Virtuel Platform, Amsterdam) and Gisela Domschke (MIS, São Paulo). The event, organized by the British Council of São Paulo, had partnerships with AHRC, Goldsmiths University and Royal College of Art (UK) and Mondriaan Fund and Virtueel Platform (NL).
