After an overview of the development in material culture studies and anthropological research of home, the author discusses two examples of anthropological writing about home: a description of home from Margaret Mead´s autobiography and Inge Daniels´ contemporary anthropological study from Japan. The analysed examples show, that the symmetrical approach in anthropology may be one of the possible ways we are able to deepen our understanding of human and nonhuman actors, how we could bridge the dichotomies between nature and culture, or as in this case between people and places and things, and thus understand more fully to multi-layered life-world(s).

There used to be several garden colonies in the suburban Prague district of Kbely. In recent years some of them had to disappear in order to make space for new development of Kbely. We propose an
analysis of how this change was reflected in the local municipal paper “Kbelák,” which is funded by the municipality and is distributed free to every household in the district.

People exist in the world both as physical beings and as members of societies, and as such, they have sophisticated structures of behavior, many ways of thinking, and various cultural traditions and roles. Because people interact with and experience their world through these structures, roles and traditions, their interactions with the environment occur in diverse complicated ways. These interactions, with people, animals, plants, communities, climatic conditions, accessible resources, hydrology, etc., create what we call "built environments". Althoughincreasingly sophisticated methods in the natural and formal sciences are opening new opportunities for archaeological research of these built environments, we still need to address the problem of methodological applications not being informed by social and humanistic sciences, and theory not being informed by data or the scientists who compile the data. In Central European archaeology specifically, stopping at the stage of methodology and working without an explicit theoretical agenda, as if interpretation refers only to describing or reorganizing data, remains aproblem. We therefore strive toincorporate social theory in human-environmental research, and offer scientific methods and social theories that complement each other. By reconstructing complete palaeo-landscapes and considering how people may have experienced, altered and (re)experienced their built environments, we believe amore complete and inclusive archaeology is possible.

sociální a kulturní antropologii (Gibas – Pauknerová 2009).

Zahrádkáři a zahrádkářství představují v postindustriálním urbánním prostředí specifický fenomén.

On the most general level, wecan understand educational trails as an expression of a modernist relationship to the natural and culturalheritage. The oldest educational trails were built in Germany and the USA in the 1920s and 1930s,the oldest Czech educational trails date from the late 1960s. After 1990, resp. 2000 we can observe, dueto the strong wave of new regionalism and environmentalism in the Czech Republic and the mass supportof building educational trails from various subsidiary programs, an unusual boom in buildingeducational trails. Their number on our territory can be estimated at almost 1000. Academic attentionthat has been devoted to the educational trails so far can be described as quite inadequate. The study is therefore, on one hand, introduction into the study of educational trails and, onthe othe...

In the text, we concentrate on garden colonies in Prague and their contemporary struggle for existence. Rather than analysing the current situation, we plea for garden colonies to be taken seriously by social science researchers because – as we argue – they can prove extremely intriguing. The text has been written as the opening of an interdisciplinary student research project we would like to launch at the Faculty of Humanities, Charles University in Prague. Within the project, students from bachelor as well as master courses are invited to participate in an interdisciplinary research of Prague garden colonies. They will thus have an opportunity to acquire first-hand research experience in a theoretically and methodologically stimulating field.
We divided our presentation of garden colonies as a potentially fruitful research field into four main sections. At first, we offer a general theoretical background to gardening and garden colonies in order to show how theoretically rich the field is. Then we position Prague garden colonies historically and legislatively. In the end, we sketch out a preliminary analysis of a discourse Prague garden colonies are now embedded in. We hold that garden colonies represent an alternative to post-socialist urban space of Prague possessed by economic forces and we argue that the socio-political negotiation about the (non)existence of Prague garden colonies is more than it seems. For it is also the negotiation of urban space, our experience of it, and of our approach and relationship to it. And by means of negotiating the urban through garden colonies as a specifically post-social phenomenon, the position of the past and the shape of the future of the city have come to the fore.
We maintain that the sensory qualities of home co-produce its emotionality as complex on both the actual and imaginary levels: processing of food, cleanliness, ambiances, particular smells, tastes, surfaces and textures or absence thereof are of extreme importance for becoming at home, taking care of it, imagining it but also play a role in experiencing/remembering home as a place of fear, abuse, violence or guilt. Sensoriality and emotionality intermingle at home and it is the role of senses, emotions and their interconnection in the ways we become at home that represent the key focus of this session. We invite papers on 1, Research of how senses and/or emotions are employed in production and consumption of home; 2, Explorations of sensorialities of home and the ways they contribute to the emotionality of feeling at home and the ambiguities/contingencies of home; 3, Explorations of emotionalities of home and the ways in which they are related to sensory dimensions of particular homes and their material groundings; 4, Methodological issues related to the research of sensorialities and emotionalities (of and at home); and 5, Theoretical engagements with the interconnections of senses and emotions regarding home and home-making.
Deadline for paper proposals is 7 November 2016.
This panel calls for contributions exploring changing landscapes including liminal, peripheral, post-military, post-industrial and other that allows us to question the status quo and explore its changes. We want to encourage discussion on topics including:
- (accelerating) changes to past and present landscapes
- growing emphasis on an explicit engagement with non-/more-than-human
- modes of scholarly exploration (empirical research, conceptual and theoretical engagement, methodological concerns)
We aim at drawing together empirical, methodological, theoretical and experimental contributions.
This workshop explores the many ways in which we as ethnologists, anthropologists and scholars from related disciplines study landscapes in the making, how we become part of their transformations and how we acknowledge, conceptualize and make methodological use of their more-than-human properties.
