James Edward Tomayko

One of the most frustrating things for any computer user is when the machine or its software seems to have a mind of its own, and does not do what the user wants. Erickson has found a way to explore this situation in order to reduce these disjunctive events to a minimum: stories. He encourages potential users of new systems to tell stories of their experiences with unpredictable computers, and uses these stories to help shape design features of new systems. Erickson might consider a change in title from “Design as Storytelling” to “Design Using Storytelling,” but otherwise this short piece is an excellent addition to the all-too -sparse literature on growing systems rather than trying to birth them whole from an inflexible specification.
