Dimitrios Katsaros

This book will be an excellent source of information for a young and exciting research field: information processing in wireless sensor networks. The authors have conducted research on various topics in the field. The book contains adequate material for this area of research, and is written by prominent researchers in this community. The book seeks to provide a succinct introduction to the field of wireless sensor networks, by synthesizing the diverse literature on key elements of sensor network design, such as sensor information organization, querying, and routing. The unifying theme throughout the book is the high-level information processing tasks that these networks are tasked to perform. Zhao and Guibas begin with the canonical problem of localizing and tracking moving objects, then systematically examine the many fundamental sensor network issues that spring from it, including network discovery, service establishment, data routing and aggregation, query processing, programming models, and system organization. The book is well written, and contains many technical topics, discussed in great depth, and with great insight. It is written for practitioners, researchers, and students, and is relevant to all application areas, including environmental monitoring, industrial sensing, the automotive and transportation industries, security and surveillance, military and battlefield use, and large-scale infrastructural maintenance. Overall, this is a book we have been waiting for: a concise, yet detailed introduction to the basic concepts of, and methods for deploying, wireless sensor networks, with an information processing approach.
