Abstract
WE have found that branches of Salvia mellifera, an aromatic shrub that grows in coastal southern California, produce sufficient quantities of terpenes to make a significant contribution to the atmospheric content of organic compounds. Our simultaneous qualitative and quantitative analyses of compounds volatilised by intact plants in controlled conditions represent an advance on previous measurements of organic compounds in the atmosphere surrounding plants1â3.
