Three topics, namely, body scale, pilgrim behavior, and time–space perception, are discussed. A space model based on mapping and measurement by former scholars is created to facilitate and visualize the analysis of the body scale of the cave space; the restriction of body scale suggests certain pilgrim behavior in the cave, whereas the occurrence of body behavior results in perception in the dimension of time. How time and space are related must be understood to comprehend the motif of Buddhist expression. This study is an architectural approach to spatial analysis that integrates the design, construction, and use phases through the scale, behavior, and perception dimensions. It is dedicated to broadening and enriching the cognitive dimensions of the space value of Mogao caves to reveal the original value of caves as religious spaces and completely preserve their...

However, they have faced significant challenges in their survival and appearance due to factors such as wars, dramatic lifestyle changes, and changes in ownership since the late Qing Dynasty. Yuyuan Garden, as an excellent cultural heritage preserved to this day but repeatedly damaged and reconstructed, is a typical example. The restoration work of Yuyuan Garden has become an important topic in the field of classical garden heritage conservation and inheritance. This paper focuses on the historical process of Chen Congzhou's supervision of the restoration of the eastern part of Yuyuan Garden in the 1980s. It explores how through practices such as historical research of Yuyuan Garden, restoration of historical appearance, and renewal and reconstruction, Chen Congzhou achieved the integration of scenery and sentiment in the restoration of the eastern part of Yuyuan Garden, as well as the reorganization of its functions and reconnection with the city. It analyzes Chen's research attitude towards historical issues of classical gardens, his rich garden design thoughts with cross-era characteristics and penetrative power, his interpretive understanding, and integration application of various traditional arts under the same cultural influence, and his profound

It reveals how the neglect of maintenance and management of City God temples by local governments in the mid-to-late Qing dynasty spurred the active involvement of the gentry class and ordinary townsfolk. They gradually became the driving force behind the flourishing of City God temples and affiliated suburban temple gardens in 18th-century Shanghai. These temple gardens gradually transformed into public spaces for local residents' activities and economic endeavors. Yuyuan, Qiuxiapu, Qushuiyuan, and Guyi Garden successively became affiliated gardens of City God temples in various prefectures and counties. This paper also explores the historical background behind the transformation of these classical gardens into suburban temple gardens.

A large number of Chenghuang Temple and affiliated gardens were built in Qingpu during the Ming and Qing dynasties, of which two Chenghuang Temple and affiliated gardens in Qingpu County and Zhujiajiao Town are the most famous. The construction process of temples and gardens in both regions has gone through twists and turns, and there are many similarities: from the beginning of construction in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, to the destruction caused by war during the Xiantong period, as well as the reconstruction during

This transformation, marked by an East-meets-West fusion, deviates from the conventions of traditional gardens. In this study, we delved into the historical evolution of these private gardens into urban parks against the canvas of evolving urban life and point out that the construction of the city-park interaction mechanism hinges on how to consolidate transformation motives and empower urban space. Focusing on the case study of the Huang Family Garden owned by the Qing Gang tycoon Gold Wing and employing a spatial culture research perspective, we illuminated how the metamorphosis of a private garden into an urban park catalyzed the development of an urban area and scrutinized the spatial transformation of the Huang Family Garden amid Shanghai's urban modernization. Furthermore, our results revealed the inherent public nature of the Huang Family Garden's evolving garden space, along with the continuous manifestation and strengthening of this characteristic through successive urban renovations. The results emphasized the role of gardens in urban resilience and sustainability, highlighting the contribution of garden spaces as public domains. The features exhibited during the transformation of private gardens into urban parks create conditions for enhancing urban resilience, while providing insights into the significance of understanding garden traits in the evolution of cities.
The Kangxi Southern Inspection Tours strengthened the Qing Dynasty’s control over Jiangnan Buddhi... more The Kangxi Southern Inspection Tours strengthened the Qing Dynasty’s control over Jiangnan Buddhism, thereby promoting the standardization and officialization of Jiangnan temples and externalizing imperial power through images and physical space. Taking Jinshan Temple as an example, this study combines spatial analysis of architecture and image analysis used by art historians to examine the transformation between physical and pictorial spaces in Jinshan Temple, revealing the spatial operation of imperial power. The intervention of imperial power sparked the space reconstruction of Jinshan Temple through a process of “merger-occupation-infiltration-adjustment”. Thus, the control measures of Kangxi are revealed, including the emphasis on the geographical significance of the temple, space occupation of royal buildings, change in landscape, and the adaptation of monks by adjusting their imagination of the sacred space. By determining the spatial reconstruction, we observe that the spatial strategy of power reflects Kangxi’s religious attitude toward Buddhism of “neither promoting nor suppressing, but treating it reasonably” 朕惟置之焉能有無之間, which may enrich our understanding of the influence of Kangxi’s Southern Inspection Tours on Jiangnan’s religious space.

Landscape sacralization is a key modality by which sacred meaning is constructed. This paper takes several examples—the Tidal Sound Cave (“chaoyin dong” 潮音洞), the Well of the Immortal Mei (“Meixian jing” 梅仙井), the Well of Ge Hong (“Ge Hong jing” 葛洪井), the Well of the Immortal (“xianren jing” 仙人井), and Duangu Pier (“Duan Gu daotou” 短姑道頭)—to analyze the three types of processes of sacralization. The Tidal Sound Cave is a re-construction of the founding myths; Well of the Immortal Mei, the Well of Ge Hong and the Well of the Immortal reflect harmony between local legends of Daoist immortals and the sacred Buddhist site; and the Duangu Pier accomplished its sanctification process in the course of local pilgrimage activities. By sorting out the mechanism and process of landscape sanctification and exploring the generation and renewal of landscape meaning, we can observe the logic of the cons...

The traditional Dali Bai House is an example of these active building techniques which has a unique architectural culture. There are abundant carpenter verbal stories, concise and comprehensive building mnemonic rhymes in Dali Bai settlements. These stories and mnemonic rhymes are a consummate sum-up of the building techniques and measurement device in common use of the Bai traditional wood frame house. Research on Mnemonic Rhymes for Building Dali Bai Traditional Houses is important conservational work, which is the timely record of intangible cultural heritage of Dali Bai traditional building techniques.
