On line with previous studies by Hadjimanolis (1999), this study conducts an analysis of innovation barriers in two emerging economies, Mexico and Turkey. In addition, we evaluate the institutional context to determine if it plays a role in the innovation barriers for firms located in Mexico and Turkey. We conduct our analysis using three sources of data to then build a comprehensive database. For Mexico, we use data from the ESIDET, 2010; for Turkey, we use data from TurkStat, 2010; while the institutional country context indicators were gathered from a set of international databases. Our results suggest that firm and context characteristics matter to tackle innovation barriers, and there are also differences between successful innovators and unsuccessful innovators. This paper contributes to the literature on innovation barriers in providing a comparative analysis of barr...

For this, we utilised fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) using data from 137 Turkish SMEs. Our results suggest a single significant path for explaining SCRM in young SMEs, while we found three significant paths for explaining SCRM in mature SMEs. Furthermore, the results indicate that demand risk is the only external factor for young SMEs to realise SCRM success. For mature SMEs, demand risk and/or relative performance are essential to explain SCRM performance. Based on our findings, we theoretically contribute by unravelling the pathways through which external factors influence SCRM performance. Moreover, practitioners could align their strategies towards these pathways when constructing a strategy for achieving SCRM performance.

This article, therefore, seeks to fill this gap by examining institutional and infrastructure supporting factors and the impact that they have on university patenting within an emerging economy higher education system, namely Turkey. The analyses use logit regression to test a set of hypotheses on a large-scale sample of Turkish universities. The findings highlight the positive role of supporting factors on a university's patenting performance, acting complementarily to the role of Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs). This article will be a guide for managers and practitioners to use supporting factors complementing the activities of TTOs in emerging economies in increasing patent applications. Finally, this article highlights future research directions and limitations of the research.

The knowledge is one of the key inputs for innovation and therefore the managing the knowledge is crucial. Open innovation urges companies to collaborate with external partners to obtain maximum benefit. The aim of this chapter, while explaining the importance of open innovation and the successful implementation results, is also to explain the risks that companies face in the implementation of open innovation. In this chapter, we first explain the risks companies face in different archetypes of open innovation process such as outside-in, inside-out, and coupled open innovation processes. Secondly, we recommended some precautions companies can take to minimise this risk and maximise the advantages. This chapter provides that knowledge risk is inevitable during the implementation of open innovation no matter what the size of companies. To minimise this, it is recommended to implement some tools for better manage the knowledge such as knowledge map, IP, need assessment, and innovation management tools. Additionally, to increase motivation and dedication of staff and enhancing their skills via internal and external training are suggested.

This is particularly true when it comes to innovation activities of family firms in efficiency-driven environments with limited indigenous innovation potential, low quality of innovation systems and weak innovation policies. The sample consisting of 293 family firms and we reveal that in such setting internal competencies, collaboration, and public support facilitate innovativeness and diminish the negative effects of firm maturity and innovation barriers among family firms. Tacit R&D knowledge and internal absorptive capacity outweigh the negative effects on innovation of family firms.

More precisely the purpose of this study is to highlight a combination of external and internal variables that predicts whether Turkish companies (i.e. family and non-family companies) will introduce new products. The study highlights the importance of location, competition in the sector (external factors), educational level, new approaches to problem solutions and management´s commitment to support new product development both financially and emotionally (internal factors) in order to meet the aim of new product introduction. Design/methodology/approach – Taking the purpose of our study, our research was based on a quantitative research strategy. We collected data from 692 Turkish companies from Turkey and used binary logistic regression analysis to predict the introduction of new products using different predictors. Originality/value – This study provides fresh insights into external and internal factors that influence whether or not new products are introduced. The findings were obtained from Turkish companies, thus we expand our understanding of the topic in different parts of the world and at different levels of economic development respectively. Practical implications – Based on the study’s findings we propose a number of measures to better manage the process of new product introduction. These measures may be useful for companies operating in other industries and countries as well.

With the proliferation of the open innovation paradigm and against the backdrop of increasing external knowledge transfer activities, knowledge management is more important than ever for innovation and firm performance of any type of organization. In fact, knowledge management is no longer a pure intra-organizational activity but constitutes a vital interface function between the organization and its external partners/stakeholders.
Throughout the book, readers will obtain both a broad overview of the two main concepts namely open innovation and knowledge management and its interplay. In addition, research will be presented which will help the readers to develop and/or expand their understanding of the phenomenon. This broad approach can also support in broadening the mindset regarding the topic under investigation and its application. Thereby, this book will primarily focus on SMEs and their approach with respect to the interplay in question.
In order to achieve the above-mentioned aim, the book consists of ten chapters that are assigned to three parts. Part 1 introduces to the main concepts, namely, SMEs, Open Innovation, Knowledge Management, and the interplay between open innovation and knowledge management in SMEs. This is followed by Part 2, which provides empirical research insights into the phenomenon of interest. The book concludes with Part 3 which addresses promising future avenues regarding the study of open innovation and knowledge management in SMEs. All the chapters are written by leading international researchers in the respective fields, which makes the book a unique piece of work.
