An Article
editI was thinking you might appreciate this article that I created today. Perhaps you might even expand it a bit if you have time? I've included enough sources to write up a decent biography, I just didn't have time today. User:Maunus ·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 02:28, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for your help! Great work! I have nominated the article for DYK, and I have also created the article Silvio Ranieri if you are interested.User:Maunus ·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 15:06, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- Wow! That cubist Mandolin is amazing, and the story is even more so!User:Maunus ·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 17:19, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks. It was a very lucky find. Researchers and that auction house have made this article easier to put together.Jacqke (talk) 17:23, 25 June 2013 (UTC)

Musical instrument name
editHi,
I am working through African lutes for an article I am creating on the English-language Wikipedia. I am contacting you to see what you know about an image File:Diffa Niger Griot DSC 0177.jpg. On [3 October 2021] you made a change to the caption, indicating the musician is playing a Komsa. I think you are right (based on the research I am doing for my article.) Can you tell me anything about what led you to put that name on the instrument. Everyone else seems to want to call it a Xalam (which is another class of instrument altogether). Anything you know or even guess would be helpful for me trying to sort out this image. The original has disappeared from Flickr.

Peer review
editHello, I left a cursory review of Earth Abides, which you added to the Novels WikiProject PR page. You can read my comments [Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels/Peer review/Earth Abides here]. Do let me know if you have any questions or comments. María (habla conmigo) 17:50, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
- You're very welcome for the review, but I wouldn't sweat the small stuff too much. You're already off to a great start; I'm very impressed that you were able to find that many reliable sources (aside from the Wikipedia articles, that is)! I've found that researching is the easiest part about writing an article; it's the anal retentive attention to Manual of Style details that will kill you. If you ever have five hours to kill, there's always WP:MOS to keep you busy. :) Good luck! María (habla conmigo) 18:10, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
Earth abides/La Terre demeure
editHello Jacqke,
I wrote the short page about "La terre demeure" in the french wikipedia. This few words don't explain the impact this book had on me. The french edition is no more available and I live with its souvenir.
Your version is very extensive and covers many points of view : bravo !
Hello, do you have any sources for your statement that the fiddle player in the photo that you linked to in the Shultz article ist Clarence Wilson? To my knowledge, the fiddler is believed to be "Uncle Pen" Vandiver. The yodeling cowboy (talk) 14:16, 14 September 2010 (UTC)
- Hi, My source for that link is from the book "In the Country of Country" by Nicholas Dawidoff. Dawidoff seems to me a credible researcher who spent a great deal of time researching the origins of Country Music. That being said, I am still pursuing a definitive answer on that, so that the photo can be used on Wikipedia.Jacqke (talk) 15:19, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

editHello. You placed an article that you said in your edit summary that was supposed to be a personal sandbox, but it was misplaced in the main encyclopedia space. I have moved it back into your userspace for you, it is located at User:Jacqke/draft article on mandores. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact me. Thanks --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 01:14, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
Thank you! Never used the sandbox before.Jacqke (talk) 01:19, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, to get a user subpage it must have your username and then This→/← type of slash (I can never remember which is the backslash and which is the forwardslash). Then you can title it whatever you want. So it would be User:Jacqke/insert title here. Again, If you have any questions I am happy to answer them. --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 01:41, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
refs
editIf you name a reference, you only have to type it once, then just call the ref name after that. Ref's go after punctuation, but I'm sure you knew that being a wikipedia copy editor and all that goes with it. Merry Christmas!--Mike - Μολὼν λαβέ 03:32, 25 December 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Seattle Cartoonists' Club
editIf this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Seattle Cartoonists' Club requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 23:14, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
The article Benjamin Brown Martin has been proposed for deletion because, under Wikipedia policy, all newly created biographies of living persons must have at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article. The nominator also raised the following concern:
- All biographies of living people created after March 18, 2010, must have references.
If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Yasht101 07:50, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
A pie for you!

Replaceable fair use File:Cubist Embergher Mandolin.jpg
editThanks for uploading File:Cubist Embergher Mandolin.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that this media item is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails the first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media item could be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media item is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template. - On the file discussion page, write the reason why this media item is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Fut.Perf. ☼ 22:24, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

Gittern
editMany thanks! It's taken me a while to get the nerve up to join in the work, I am a bit slow with anything other than Sibelius or Cubase (and I'm not an expert with these either!). Hopefully we can eliminate the speculative theories many reference works tend to repeat as fact and use actual historical source material to expand the early instrument articles. Apologies - no talk button, haven't figured that out yet Pupsikon 05:09, 10 October 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pupsikon (talk • contribs)
- Hi Jacqke, here's a line of thought I would welcome your assistance with. I see articles on the guitar and related stuff which constantly repeat the hoary myth (in my humble opinion) of the Arabic origin for the guitar, gittern, and so forth.
Here's a provisional list of the problems I have with it - I would be grateful for feedback.
1. No actual historical sources - nothing in any documents, letters, etc., from the period to support the theory. Nada absolute. I keep finding a reference to 'guitarra latina' and 'guitarra morisco' with no attributable source or context, so if you know where this comes from (apart from modern encyclopedias trotting out the theory) - it's a good place to investigate further I think..
2. The Cantigas de Santa Maria illustration appearing in articles like the one on the guitar (third one down) to support the idea. There are no captions on the original document to go with the illustrations, and no indications in the text to support the identification of any instruments, let alone the guitar. So it's all guesswork really... I could say the picture in question has an instrument on the right which resembles a gittern and one on the left that resembles a citole. Would I be wrong?
3. The assumption made that no instruments like the gittern existed in Iberia before the Arab conquests just frankly doesn't hold water. Apart from the linguistic evidence (which deserves more attention for a whole number of reasons), it's worth considering what kind of society existed there prior to the invasion.
The fact the 'Iberians' (I'm using the term loosely here to support the line of thought) lacked the military capacity (or even did not wish), to resist the invasion; is no indication of the musical culture existing at the time. I won't waste your time with text here, but if you check out Wiki stuff on the history of the Roman Empire in the Iberian peninsula I think you'll get the picture of my drift here.
There's loads more - if you want to collaborate further please feel free to get back to me. User:Pupsikon Pupsikon 21:03, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

Clippings allow you to identify particular articles, extract them from the original full sheet newspaper, and share them through unique URLs. Wikipedia users who click on a clipping link in your citation list will be able to access that particular article, and the full page of the paper if they come from the clipping, without needing to subscribe to Newspapers.com. For more information about how to use clippings, see http://www.newspapers.com/basics/#h-clips .

Classical mandolinists
editTo your first question: sure, I don't see why there couldn't be a category dedicated to classical mandolinists. It can certainly be populated.
To your second question: yes, you can paste the newer list over the older one, as long as you're not eliminating any information from the older one. That said, it might be better to do a history merge, which will require administrative oversight - let me know if and when you'd prefer that. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:39, 27 September 2015 (UTC)
- Any time. Let me know if you'd like a hand getting the category off the ground, too - if I have a decent list to work from I can populate it easily using AWB. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 19:00, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

Tim White-Sobieski Article Nominated for deletion
editDear Jacqke,
I see that the English Wikipedia page for Tim White Sobieski has been nominated for deletion just today or yesterday. Prior to that, it was in good standing. I changed a few things re: updating links that were no longer valid, changed punctuation, and checked grammar, and it seems due to these changes the page is up for deletion.
Is there any way the page can be removed from this category? What shall I do? Should I revert all the changes back to the way the page originally was?
Thank you so much in advance for your advice and help.
I am an educator and curator, and due to the amount of publications, shows, and press this artist has gotten, I consider his work worthy of being in the encyclopedia.
Thank you again.

- @Paulinapaulina3030: I have been annoyed by this before, but I think I understand how to help. Another editor has tagged it for deletion. What that means is it needs to have additional references added to it and be rewritten to make it more "encyclopedic". At an undetermined point, an administrator will review changes (and any arguments we make for importance) and decide to keep or delete it. The good news is that there is a lot of material to use to cite as references. Best are newspapers and books, but museum exhibition catalogs can work and even online websites (these are of the least value to establish notability). There is also the editor Butterbeanne interested in saving the article, a new writer who might have access to good info sources. I will be available off and on to help. If it takes me a while to answer, my life probably is busy, but I will help you. Don't list hope as it can be saved. Idk your experience with Wikipedia, but if you need help with any aspect, especially with the things like how to add references, let me knowJacqke (talk) 18:28, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
Thank you Jacqke, I have added 28 other references, and have updated the bibliography with the correct format and as many ISBN numbers as I could find.
Please let me know what else I can do to elevate the status of this page as an educational resource.
Thank you!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Paulinapaulina3030 (talk • contribs) 02:50, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi Jacqke! sending you some requests and thanks
editI saw that you put some effort for the Rory Gallagher article. THANK YOU! It was on my "to do" list but I got really sick and into a coma, and am learning to walk again; all that stuff. I know I'll probably not edit much but hope it will increase in time... Also, I have the hardback book that Gerry McAvoy-- Rory's bass player wrote and am willing to mail it free to someone like you to pick out the details and make a great article. Are you interested? Leave a note on my talk page. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 02:16, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
I was a very busy editor here for many years but a little over 2 yrs. ago and became really sick, and the complete atrophy following a coma, (learning to touch two fingers together, nursing homes, etc. prevented me from really doing much editing, though I am getting back the desire to edit some while I continue to heal
Deletion pending for File:1925 Gibson F5.jpg

File permission problem with File:Boy playing rawap.jpg
editThanks for uploading File:Boy playing rawap.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.
If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 16:23, 17 January 2017 (UTC)

No hard feelings
editHopefully no hard feelings over the recent COI Noticeboard I mentioned you in. Though I was conflicted about confronting an established editor with such scant evidence, I thought that it was my role to do so. On a personal note, I fully respect your decision to help an article subject by writing his page, I as believe (and you said) that this will prevent him from seeking out more dubious methods to do so, like paid editing. Furthermore, this whole situation has given me an opportunity to educate myself about Ed Seeman, which I probably never would have done otherwise. Cheers, and I hope we meet again under better circumstances. Keep up the good work.--SamHolt6 (talk) 01:37, 4 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi, Jacqke, I noticed your recent edit to this article. Is there a specific reason why the images are not lined up? Thank you for your time. Lotje (talk) 13:18, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
- You could for example use the <gallery widths="154px" heights="200px" class="center" caption="Altar servers in art"> (like in Altar server), that could make things easier for you. Lotje (talk) 13:21, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
- @Lotje: Hi Lotje, I have indeed had problem with images in the gallery. They tend to look fine until I add captions. I tried your advice, going even larger on the width. That seems to have helped on the desktop, less on my phone screen. I appreciate your help.Jacqke (talk) 13:47, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

Is this Ruan Lingyu?
editThis person looks nothing like her. Do you have a source? Timmyshin (talk) 18:35, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
- According to [1] (p. 122, 138th page) this person is Yan Yuexian which you just created (great job btw). So I'm going to remove this image from the Ruan Lingyu article. Thanks! Timmyshin (talk) 18:42, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
- Timmyshin, I submit to your judgment. My source had similar feelings about the identification; I got my information for many of these cover images from an enthusiast online, calling himself the Landlord. He was uncomfortable with the identification being Yan Lingyu but said that the magazine identified her as such. "The cover character of the 29th issue of 1928: Yan Lingyu (Liangyou said that it is Yan Lingyu, the landlord feels a bit different) Yan Lingyu (1910.4.26—1935.3.8), formerly known as Feng Fenggen..." Since there is this much uncertainty among sources, it is probably best not to put it in an article until that is cleared up. Should I attach a note to the image mentioning the uncertainty among sources? I should add that the translation software I used made this passage very touchy, even contradicting itself, depending on which characters touched one another.
- Thank you for looking in (and I do mean that). I try to fact check as I go, but this one was difficult. BTW that document you linked to is very good. Jacqke (talk) 02:09, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for the source. I'm surprised you don't read Chinese! These articles on Chinese silent film stars must be a lot of work for you! Regarding this picture I don't think there's any uncertainty: compare it with the one in Yan Yuexian's article, and the resemblance (at least to me) is too obvious. I knew how Ruan Lingyu looked because I have watched some of her films. (Chinese silent films from the 1930s - at least the ones I watched - couldn't even compare with American films from the late 1910s, but I would recommend Ruan's films. She's no beauty by today's standards, but she's incredible.) Timmyshin (talk) 03:17, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
- Timmyshin, Editing Chinese wasn't possible for me before Google. I have to be wary of problems caused by translation, but I have enjoyed the process. I try only to go from other languages to English, as I have no way to know if the translation looks good going the other way. I saw that you have been correcting names in the Commons files I added; thank you! Would you mind looking over The Young Companion, which I have been working. I think all the names I added are correctly translated, but...(?)Jacqke (talk) 12:14, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
- The article looks great! I corrected a couple of names. Only thing is the gallery doesn't exactly line up in my browser. Timmyshin (talk) 16:36, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you! You're right, there is a prob with the gallery. I don't think it was meant to have captions. I tried resizing at one point which helped some .Jacqke (talk) 16:41, 3 August 2018 (UTC) That photo you found looks great!Jacqke (talk) 16:42, 3 August 2018 (UTC)

Dingjiazha tomb
editHi Jacqke, thanks for writing Dingjiazha Tomb No. 5, it's a beautiful article! I've moved the article to the current title because "Yanju" is not the name of the tomb's occupant, but is an archaic word meaning "leisurely life", describing the mural in the tomb. I included the section of a magazine article in a ref, talking about possible dates this tomb was made. Would you mind looking at that to see if you understand it better than I. This has been a contentious issue, with amateur researchers going back and forth over the possible date of the paintings. Speedy deletion nomination of Tro che
editHello Jacqke,
I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Tro che for deletion, because it doesn't appear to contain any encyclopedic content. Take a look at our suggestions for essential content in short articles to learn what should be included.
If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.
You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 17:13, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
- SkyGazer 512 Hi, I appreciate your looking at the article and for having a high standard. I agree that I need better resources. Perhaps I can find someone in Cambodia to talk to. I have found only one academic document so far, and haven't checked it yet. For the moment, before I dig into the sources, I am just trying to sort out all the instruments. They are difficult, both because of language issues and because of imprecision of local use of terms for instruments. It makes finding a simple definitive word a battle, and I've had to delete and rename and restart pages. I will certainly purse non-blog sources if I can find them. I chose these simply because the information transmitted clearly came from a printed source, even if they didn't identify it. As I work, please let me know if there are other issues. Jacqke (talk) 17:43, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
- SkyGazer 512 Just to let you know, I already had to rearrange article names, once I checked the academic source. It turns out there are two Cambodian instruments with nearly identical names (in English at least) that don't translate well. I'll let you tag them as needed, but the two articles are now Kong mon and Kong mong. The Thai instruments are nearly identical.Jacqke (talk) 19:23, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
- Hey Jacqke. Sorry for not getting back to you sooner; pings don't work if you get them wrong the first time, you have to either resign or ping the pingee again in the edit summary in order for it to go through. Anyways, yeah, for obscure subjects like this, it's often very difficult to find reliable sources covering them in-depth, and I appreciate that you're willing to find what you can to create these articles. Unfortunately, I'm on mobile atm so I can't really look at the new source deeply, which I apologize for, but in short, if the PDF provides significant coverage and seems reliable enough, there should be no issue with removing the tag. I'll look into this more when I get home; perhaps I'll be able to scrape up some more sources. Cheers, --SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 19:34, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
- The PDF looks good enough. I've removed the tag for now. However, more sources for verification would certainly be great, but I wouldn't worry too much about it. I've also reviewed Kong mon, and tagged it is a stub. Happy editing!--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 23:52, 16 October 2018 (UTC)

Roneat thong moved to draftspace
editAn article you recently created, Roneat thong, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. — Newslinger talk 16:12, 25 November 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for starting the new article on the Salo (instrument). The article has been tagged as a "stub" because it is obviously very short. Please consider finding more information that could flesh out the article, such as notable players, notable songs in which it has been used, and the like.

Additions to Pierrot page.
editHello.
Thank you for your contributions to the Pierrot page. Unfortunately, they're misplaced: they belong in the early 20th-century sections of the page, not the 19th-century sections, so I will move them, if you have no objections.

You are clearly extremely well-versed in the usage and development of the mandolin and mandola, but I wonder if you are familiar with the above named outfit (now sadly defunct). I was lucky enough to see The Bad Shepherds twice in concert. Ade Edmondson played both of those instruments to a more than competent level, but the virtuoso instrumentation of Troy Donockley and Andy Dinan brought the ensemble together. The originality of performing predominately punk rock and new wave music on traditional instruments was, to my ears, a real treat. If you are unaware of them, then any of their performance pieces on YouTube, or wherever, may interest you. Maybe, just maybe, Edmondson at least deserves listing under [Category:British mandolinists]. Regards,

- Hi, Derek R Bullamore! I've benefited from some wonderful researchers and writers. I have given up on knowing everything, which lets me enjoy information as it appears. I thank you for bringing these musicians to my attention. I have to admit my tastes have run more toward bluegrass and classical lately, but punk/new wave mandolin sounds like it needs to be explored. Thank you!Jacqke (talk) 03:04, 3 May 2019 (UTC)

FULBERT (talk) 13:51, 3 June 2019 (UTC)
- FULBERT I appreciate your looking over the History of the mandolin article. I had to split it from Mandolin due to that article being too long. I agree that the intro needs work and I will do that, if someone else doesn't tackle it before I get to it. Regarding the photos, I am not sure. I know that Wikipedia often tends to be sparse. I have tried to pick images targeted to content. The content covers more than a thousand years of obscure history, and if one looks in one of the encyclopedias (Groves Dictionary of Musical Instruments), they have adapted a similarly photo-heavy approach to deal with lute family and violin/fiddle family instruments). I also understand that my liking of content could be emotional attachment as creator, and if enough editors say I put too much in, then I will cull the images. I tried to use the images to chunk information (photos with photos in a box). Maybe this is not a good approach; I don't know. I appreciate your input and will consult you after I get some changes made. Jacqke (talk) 10:26, 4 June 2019 (UTC)
- I think the images are helpful in this article Jacqke, and it is more an issue of placement and perhaps too many images that then distract, rather than add to and support, the text. You may want to check out the suggestions in MOS:IMAGES for some guidance and suggestions. I agree with you that images are important in this topic, so clarifying them and using them to add to the information is most ideal. --- FULBERT (talk) 21:57, 4 June 2019 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Kong ring (គង់រេង) tube zither.jpg
editThank you for uploading File:Kong ring (គង់រេង) tube zither.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Speedy deletion nomination of Mandolins in North America
editHello Jacqke,
I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Mandolins in North America for deletion, because it seems to be copied from another source, probably infringing copyright.
If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to rewrite it in your own words, you can contest this deletion, but don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.
You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!

- @SportingFlyer:, I am shocked. I have spent a great deal of time researching for that article. I don't understand what material is copyrighted that you are referring to. If so, then it can certainly be modified without killing the entire article. The first indication I had of a problem was the notice that the article was deleted. How about letting me know you spotted a problem? What is to be done?
Sending this to both people who I saw involved in the deletion. Need conversation. Need it reversed.
I got a shock when I got home from work tonight. An article that I spent years researching was taken down. I don't understand what copyright was broken, but if there was some copyrighted material, surely that can be taken out without killing the article. I have spent a great deal of time getting quotes right and indicating where material came from. I paraphrase and rewrite and tell who said what. Simply seeing the article go away without getting the chance to redress any complaints (or even know there was a problem with my work) is very discouraging. I have been very active on Wikipedia, but I still don't know where to begin to talk to anyone about this.
- Two pages were mentioned as unambiguous copyright infringements. The first <acousticmusic.org/research/guitar-information/guitars-stringed-instruments-general-information> is actually a copy of the Mandolins in the United States article, when it was part of the Mandolin article. I wrote that material!
The second cited was a conversation on MandolinCafe <https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/threads/114005-Who-was-the-first-American-mandolin-manufacturer/page3>. I started that conversation as part of my research for this article. The material said to be a copyright infringement was a quote on MandolinCafe of a paragraph from from Wikipedia:
"Mandolin awareness in the United States blossomed in the 1880s, as the instrument became part of a fad that continued into the mid-1920s.[57][58] According to Clarence L. Partee a publisher in the BMG movement (banjo, mandolin and guitar), the first mandolin made in the United States was made in 1883 or 1884 by Joseph Bohmann, who was an established maker of violins in Chicago.[201] Partee characterized the early instrument as being larger than the European instruments he was used to, with a "peculiar shape" and "crude construction," and said that the quality improved, until American instruments were "superior" to imported instruments.[201] At the time, Partee was using an imported French-made mandolin.[201] [59] By the year 1900 mandolin sales constituted 10.6 percent of the nation's "small goods" musical instrument sales, less than the 21.3 percent that music boxes held and more than the guitar's 9.6 percent.[202] The mandolin also outsold zithers, "Apollo harps" and autoharps at 8.6 percent and brass instruments for bands at 7.5 percent of total sales.[202]"
A simple check in the history of the Mandolin article will show the above material being created, with all the first drafts, typos and corrections.
That was me on MandolinCafe, quoting what I had just written on Wikipedia for the article! If there are any other areas, please tell me.
Please speedy undelete this article!!!!Jacqke (talk) 05:09, 11 July 2019 (UTC)

- @SportingFlyer: I understand. I had to spin it off from the Mandolin article because it had gotten too big. Also History of Mandolins and Mandolin playing traditions worldwide. I appreciate that you did what you did when you saw it. I just discovered a straight lift from someone's research paper, while writing the current article in my sandbox. One suggestion...it took me a lot of looking before I found out what you had seen; the links to the pages were only found in one place, and after the article was deleted, I couldn't see those links. Once I did, I was able to examine and figure out what happened. I'll make mention on the talk page of those links for the future. I never realized that working in two places at once (Mandolin Cafe and here) could cause that kind of conflict; I'll need to be more emphatic when I quote.Jacqke (talk) 12:49, 11 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Jacqke: As I noted on the other talk page, there were several different websites with high to low level copying. I would recommend running the article through Earwig once it's restored - not the only tool used, but you can get a sense of what text lives elsewhere, and incorporate that into the talk page statement. Good luck, sorry for the inconvenience. SportingFlyer T·C 17:22, 11 July 2019 (UTC)

editThanks @Jacqke for yr encouragement. Actually I am quite busy with my college works. I will help contribute other Cambodian related articles that lacked the information. I am bilingual, Khmer is my native and English is my second language, so I can translate and understand well or what should be translate or what is a proper translations should be. Google translate might gives a wrong translation. Be careful with that. Actually there are many research papers regarding the articles I edited and expanded as well as other Cambodian related articles on Wikipedia, however, those research papers or scholarly articles haven't been translated into English that's why many information is lacked on Wikipedia article. I'll try my best in my free times adding the necessary information regarding the articles I can help. Seriously, I am quite concerned regarding the Copyrights policy of Wikipedia after getting alerted as I afraid I might be blocked from editing by Wikipedia haha. Anyway, will help as much as i can in my free time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Antony Willianson (talk • contribs) 12:08, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
- Antony Willianson You have done well; copyright is a constant focus, and you are aware of it now. I have had many issues with translators and have to keep my writing very simple when I use Khmer, Thai or Chinese sources. I asked, because I like asking native language speakers occaisional questions.
- When you have time, would you re-read the pinpeat article. I worked on the history section for sentence flow; I was confused about when the pin and pinpeat came to Cambodia. Was it during the Funan kingdom (1st-6th centuries)? My other question-- you wrote that 250 songs (or a list of songs) was found on the street after the fall of the Khmer Rouge. Can you say more about that discovery? It is a great fact and really needs a source (even if that source is a blog).
- CHEERS, Jacqke (talk) 17:05, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
Thanks Jacqke for yr response. The history of pinpeat can be traced back with the introduction of Pin in Cambodia or the Indianization process in Southeast Asia which mean the early Funan era.
So to understand more about the history of pinpeat we have to track the history of pin in Cambodia which was used as a premiere instrument in Pinpeat orchestra or literally pin gave the name to the historical pinpeat ensemble. Although pin has been absent for hundreds of years and now being revived and re-accompanied with other Pinpeat instruments, the ensemble is called as Pinpeat as a remembrance of its past. However, the earliest surviving depiction of Pin (harp) was carved on a temple at Sambor Prey Kuk (UNESCO) at the end of the Funan era which is in the begining of Chenla era (7th CE). However, according to a record (I cant find the direct source, will add as reference if i found) but was quoted in many articles and research papers, there was a mention of group of musicians namedPinpangsimilar to Pinpeat, which used Pin-an instrument introduced from ancient India during the Funan era that's why many researchers believed that Pinpeat is probably established at least during the Funan era (1sth-6th CE). Hope u can understand my explanation. I will try to make the text flow when I am free or u can help me as well.
About that 250 plus list of Pinpeat song/ musics were discovered on the street of Phnom Penh when the capital was liberated in 1979. This document was published in a Newpaper in the similar years. I try to find the primary source as well. Note that during the Khmer Rouge, countless documents were destroyed, even the Reamker's (Cambodian Ramayana) poem and large part of its story description havent revived or discovered yet as they were lost in this tragedy as well. As I remember, the list of Pinpeat Song here was posted by a blog or a writers which cant be cited when I was adding this part, I will try to put the reference later. However, this source is very significance because It is a rare surviving document regarding the pinpeat musics list which were lost in the tragedy only some of them are being revived, the rest remained only name. The list are all in Khmer (I romanized) and I translated some of their title, I will try to translate the rest into English as well, but it takes time.
Message me if u want to have any verification or question. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Antony Willianson (talk • contribs) 09:48, 21 August 2019 (UTC)
- Antony Willianson, I need to work with the text for a bit; my additions are starting to mess with the flow of the history section. - Hello Magog the Ogre
- Hoping you might have an suggestion. I submitted the image in 2009, now up for deletion. Fair enough...I never secured written permission at the time. The copyright holder agreed free use over the phone, as long as credit to his comoany was attached to the image.
- I am going to approach the copyright holder again to get written permission. What is the easiest way for him to confirm consent? If he reaffirms the permission he gave over the phone, I don't want to scare him away with a complicated process.Jacqke (talk) 21:38, 10 November 2019 (UTC)
- Sure. Does this person have access to email? That would make this a lot easier. You can send that person an email with a form to fill, and you can forward that email to our OTRS team. The form is here: c:Commons:Email templates. Magog the Ogre (t • c) 23:25, 10 November 2019 (UTC)
ArbCom 2019 election voter message
editGoogle Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!
editHello,
Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.
I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!
From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.
If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.
Thank you!
Carlo Curti rename
editHello! What would you think of renaming the page Carlo Curti (1807-1872) to 'Carlo Curti (Bolognese composer)' or 'Carlo Curti (Bolognese musician)'? In your mind does that sufficiently differentiate from the Italian-American musician Carlo Curti? —Waldhorn (talk) 22:29, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
- Waldhorn, that sounds fine. I made the article without thinking of a way to organize. Thanks, Jacqke (talk) 22:37, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
Hello! I saw your post at the Teahouse and made some edits to the above article. It's a very well-written article! The main problem, in my view, is that it contains way too much detail to be encyclopedic. If there is away to delete about half the material, you will be on the way to having those tags removed. The information is fascinating, but there is too much of it. For example, the article on the Museum_of_Modern_Art is 69KB; the ABM article is about 45KB. The Museum of Fine Arts Houston is 20,330 bytes. Perhaps have a look at some articles on large museums and you will see what kinds of trims are needed. I would guess htat most of the information on the specifics of the collection would have to go. The Just my two cents.ThatMontrealIP (talk) 04:09, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
- ThatMontrealIP, I appreciate your looking. I am planning to take about half out for the banjo article's history section. Maybe by eliminating so much history it will look Les essayish? Thank you!Jacqke (talk) 04:18, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
- You know, it's a pretty stellar detailed description overall! But if you consider that we do not have any detailed coverage of the collections of the above extremely notable museums, you will be on the right track to making adjustments to ABM. I think you might look also at Musical_Instrument_Museum_(Phoenix), Musical_Instrument_Museum_(Brussels) and Berlin_Musical_Instrument_Museum, you will see some inspirational examples, in terms of trimming. All the same, it will be sad to see all that good detail go.ThatMontrealIP (talk) 04:30, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
American Banjo Museum c/e
editHello, Jacqke. This is a courtesy notice that the copy edit you requested for American Banjo Museum at the Guild of Copy Editors requests page is now complete. All feedback welcome! Cheers, Baffle☿gab 04:37, 9 March 2020 (UTC) |
- Hi Jacqke, I've finished my c/e; you can find most of the text I removed on the article's talk page. To further improve the article, you could move some of the images to the gallery section; excess images clutter the page and make it difficult for the reader to follow the text. One image in short section and two or three in larger section are acceptable. Cheers and good luck with the article, Baffle☿gab 04:37, 9 March 2020 (UTC)
- Baffle gab1978, Will do. Their place in the article will have to change. Thank you, Jacqke (talk) 04:43, 9 March 2020 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:True Grit (Charles Portis novel).jpg
editThanks for uploading File:True Grit (Charles Portis novel).jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, Kong mon. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – Khong mon. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Khong mon. If you have new information to add, you might want to discuss it at the article's talk page.
If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. MistyGraceWhite (talk) 09:05, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
Mandolin documentaries
editDear Jacqke,
due your showed interested on the mandolin I point your attention to these mini-documentaries we are producing with the topic on the mandolin history through its Italian cities. They are intended as cultural pills with the aim to get more people interested around the instrument and clarify what the instrument really was and it is against the common stereotype.
I hope you find them interesting (sorry they are only in Italian so far) and I invite you to keep in touch. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2q_PBCdUi6tcRYVhoN60tiYxSG0IOtba

John Henry Hintermeister moved to draftspace
editAn article you recently created, John Henry Hintermeister, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:

When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution
edit Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Bandurria into History of lute-family instruments. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution
. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. Please provide attribution for this duplication if it has not already been supplied by another editor, and if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, you should provide attribution for that also. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. If you are the sole author of the prose that was copied, attribution is not required. — Diannaa (talk) 15:49, 2 August 2020 (UTC)

Concheras
editHello. Here in Mexico we call those instruments concha(s), conchera(s), guitarra(s) conchera(s), mandolina(s) conchera(s), guitarra(s) de concha, mandolina(s) de concha.
S is used for plural in both adjective and sustantive.
Example, 2 instruments: "dos mandolinas concheras".
"Danza concheras" is grammatically incorrect, you need s on danzas, and is also lexically incorrect, since "danzas concheras" refer to "dance of concheras", and the article is mainly about the instuments.
--Opus88888 (talk) 20:51, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
- Opus88888, I appreciate that. My Spanish (from school) has atrophied.Jacqke (talk) 20:53, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
- Would it be best to label them as a group, "conchas?" Jacqke (talk) 20:58, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
- When I created this article, it was intended for instruments only, there wasn't a text about history of the dances. The dances are covered in concheros article. Danzas concheras would be translated as "concheras dances".
Conchas or concheras would be a descriptive name for that group of instruments, but conchas is used for other sustantives, like concha bread, animal shell, sport protector for testicles, an many more. --Opus88888 (talk) 21:13, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
- In other words, you have put an article name for dances, and the article is for instruments, not dances: danzas concheras = concheras dances. --Opus88888 (talk) 21:22, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
- Opus88888|Opus88888, I wondered about the meaning of danzas concheras. I thought it might not be referring to the instrument, although the source used it that way. Does concheras connect to concheros -- the words look the same to me; the endings don’t enlighten me as to meaning. Do you thinkI should change the title back to concheros string instruments?Jacqke (talk) 21:26, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
- 'Concheras' are the instruments 'concheros' play. 'Concheros' play 'concheras' and dance "danzas concheras".
'Concheros' string instruments = instruments of string of 'concheros'
= instrumentos de cuerda de los 'concheros'.

placement of sound file
editHello Jacqke, Since you agreed with me on the musical instruments project talk page (and since you mentioned Mandolin there and I saw that that's your particular interest), I went ahead and placed 1 sound file in the (IMO) correct place on that page. This message is to give you a heads up about that but if you disagree you can just reverse it and I'll leave it alone. Regards, --Dutchy45 (talk) 16:31, 5 December 2020 (UTC)
- Dutchy45, I think that looks fine. I have focused on lutes mandolins, etc. for a while, but am moving my focus to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Musical Instruments, because I think there hasn't been serious activity to standardize articles, create new articles or assess articles for some time. My current focus is new articles and assessing the backlog of unassessed articles. I think anything you do to contribute is great. Jacqke (talk) 16:38, 5 December 2020 (UTC)
- Dutchy45, I didn't like the look when I tried to put the sound clip at the beginning of Nose flute; it was confusing to look at there, with all the boxes competing for the viewer's eye. In that one, I placed it inside the infobox under "more articles or information" and I think that looks good. It works well when I pulled it up on my phone too. The article Perma-Bound has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
No indication of notability, fails WP:COMPANY.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. JayJayWhat did I do? 02:25, 18 January 2021 (UTC)
MOS:FOREIGNITALIC
editHallo Jacqke,
Please see here for the policy: MOS:FOREIGNITALIC. If you have questions it's better you take it up on the talk page there. Concerning consistency with the remaining articles it's a tedious manual task, so your help in completing the rest would be truly appreciated. Thank you. Gryffindor (talk) 01:04, 28 January 2021 (UTC)
- Gryffindor, I appreciate the information. I didn't realize article titles could be italicized, but you are right. I stand corrected. A question then... the article rebab which is now italicized in the article title. Looking through that article, I see the word is not italicized later on in the article. Does it need italicized throughout, or in initial appearance or each time it appears? I don't see anything about repetitive use of the word, which happens when explaining and comparing. Thank you, Jacqke (talk) 04:20, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

Guitar
editEagledj, I think you are right about Guitar needing improvement. Would you like to work together on the article? I tend to make articles more complex when I am very interested in a subject, but that shouldn't be a problem with guitar. At the least, I'm willing to talk to someone else that is actively working the guitar article.
I would suggest that, as far as is possible, some thought should be placed into creating a common organizational structure for guitar, mandolin and lute, which are all similar subjects and are all vital 4 articles. For example, maybe "construction" should be placed at the top of the articles. Best wishes, Jacqke (talk) 11:58, 18 February 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Jacqke,I have other projects going and I can only look in intermittently on guitar. You've done a bang-up job on lute and mandolin, good work. These two are good because they have a dominant author, YOU. Guitar has so many different contributors that it is a patchwork without a leader. I do not have time to go over paragraphs of unreferenced content, trying to find legitimate sources for someone else's words. I will, however, keep in touch and help when I can. Check out Lap steel guitar which I have just finished. I had to do a total re-write without one word of its original state (which was then totally without refs). An image
editHello, I recently saw you adding this image File:Chennakesava Temple Sculpture detail (3925681370).jpg to Krishna article; with the caption that it is vina. However, there is no iconographical association between the two and most probably, he is holding a flute in the sculpture. You may remove this controversial image. .245CMR.•👥📜 04:18, 25 May 2021 (UTC)
- 245CMR, no controversy nor offense is intended. There are a number of images of Krishna dancing with a vina. I am uncertain of religious aspects, my only interest being historical. If it bothers you, please feel free to revert the addition. I am doing my best to put images to good use as I find them. I am certain that it is a vina and not a flute; details from different angles in various photos include a resonator between the instrument and his shoulder, the visible string, especially at the instrument's top, the bottom of the instrument which matches the look of other tube/stick zither images from sculpture. The article for the instrument is in progress at Alapini vina and eka-tantri vina. Respectfully, Jacqke (talk) 04:35, 25 May 2021 (UTC)

Alapini Vina
editHi the article Alapini Vina is essentially a cut and paste copy of Eka-tantri Vina. Can you please tell me why we have effectively one article under two titles? Isn’t there a better way of organising the material? Thanks Mccapra (talk) 17:20, 27 July 2021 (UTC)
- Mccapra, I appreciate your contacting me about this. You are right that the articles are nearly identical; they started out as one article but it was suggested they needed separating, so I did. I need to rework them with newer sources. That will have to wait a bit, as I've gotten busy working again. I think it needs to be done though, because to are right about the way they are at the moment. Jacqke (talk) 03:32, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

editTemplate:HS number/311.2211 marked for speedy deletion
editI have marked {{HS number/311.2211}} for speedy deletion, with the following rationale: "The creator was apparently attempting to create Template:HS number/311.211 (note template content matches that number) but made a typo. See List of musical instruments by Hornbostel–Sachs number: 31 for verification that there is no such number." If I have done so in error, and the template has been deleted, you can request its recreation. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:08, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
The file File:James Francis Cooke.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
There is the free image of the same name at Commons. Andrei Romanenko (talk) 21:39, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.
Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
Replaceable fair use File:James Francis Cooke.jpg
editThanks for uploading File:James Francis Cooke.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and add the text
{{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}}
below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing<your reason>
with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable. - On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 14:43, 23 May 2022 (UTC)
Cleanup of Mandolin traditions worldwide
edit@Dom Kaos: Hi Dom, I am contemplating work on Mandolin playing traditions worldwide, which you tagged last year for cleanup. Would you mind looking at it again, to identify any sections that stick out to you? I wrote much of the article and I have a hard time seeing problems with my own writing. Plus, there are sections that predate me... I think I need to tackle the United Kingdom section first, as that section is largely unreferenced and seems opinionated. If you see anything, please let me know. Please answer here so I'll see it. Thanks Jacqke (talk) 00:14, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of String drum
editIf this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on String drum requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. editHello, I think the English version of the article was well done. The pictures are also beautiful and plentiful. However, finding the English transliterations of Old Aramaic words requires a little attention. I'll try to help too. It would be nice to find someone who understands Old Aramaic. - @Villanueva and Villanueva: Thank you! It has been fun. I am embarking on a series of translations of your articles this week; I am working on angular harps and bow harps next. I just finished with [[Maghreb rebab]]. Any help you can offer is appreciated. I know enough of languages to sometimes judge the efficacy of Google Translate, but Hungarian and Aramaic are both challenging for me. I had thought of writing these myself, but as I looked at Wikipedia in all its languages, your articles stand out (as do those in German. I will keep at work and let you know how things are progressing. Best wishes,Jacqke (talk) 16:26, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
Nine Sons of the Dragon moved to draftspace
editAn article you recently created, Nine Sons of the Dragon, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more in-depth coverage about the subject itself, with citations from reliable, independent sources in order to show it meets WP:GNG. It should have at least three. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page.Onel5969 TT me 13:47, 18 November 2022 (UTC)

editHi there, there's a few things to notice with your references on bugle; mainly, don't use Wikipedia library links, they're only going to work for editors with access. Please use the original links instead, or better yet for Grove Online, use the {{Cite Grove}} template. Also, you don't have to, but if you could make larger, less frequent edits, it would make my head spin a bit less! — Jon (talk) 03:47, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

Edit bombing the cornett article
editHi, I appreciate your enthusiasm but can you please consider making fewer, broader and better proofed edits? In the last month you have made 420 edits to the Cornett article. It makes it difficult to track progress and identify when/where errors occurred, not to mention slowing/overburdening some automated tools and bots that query article history. If fear of losing edits is the problem, there is a very handy Firefox add-on called Textarea Cache which will keep a log of your changes to an edit area; I'm sure there's something similar for other browsers. Also, I'm concerned the cornett article makes too much hay from some of the references; the Marceuse dictionary entry is used 30 times and amounts to a single page, for instance. — Jon (talk) 01:04, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
I do apologize for the "edit bombing"; the habit does indeed reflect much lost work, from poor internet connections on a mobile phone where I do much of my work. If you know of an Android-phone solution, that would be useful. As to proofing, yes I will try to slow down. I don't catch mistakes that I make in editing until after the publish button has been hit, and in crappy-internet land, preview often loses my work. As to Marcuse, yes I used her books a lot for some sections; she wrote densely, with a good deal of information in one place. Also she gave details when others assumed knowledge in the reader. I don't think removing her refs is a good idea, unless they can be replaced; other refs need to be brought in. I appreciate that you are taking the time to read through the edits; in the years I have been at this, you may be the only one to comment on the process, to actually act as an editor instead of a writer (which is what I think I do). I will indeed work on broader better proofed edits. Best wishes, Jacqke (talk) 12:37, 21 February 2023 (UTC)

Autopatrolled
editHi Jacqke, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the autopatrolled user right to your account. This means that pages you create will automatically be marked as 'reviewed', and no longer appear in the new pages feed. Autopatrolled is assigned to prolific creators of articles, where those articles do not require further review, and may have been requested on your behalf by someone else. It doesn't affect how you edit; it is used only to manage the workload of new page patrollers.
Since the articles you create will no longer be systematically reviewed by other editors, it is important that you maintain the high standard you have achieved so far in all your future creations. Please also try to remember to add relevant WikiProject templates, stub tags, categories, and incoming links to them, if you aren't already in the habit; user scripts such as Rater and StubSorter can help with this. As you have already shown that you have a strong grasp of Wikipedia's core content policies, you might also consider volunteering to become a new page patroller yourself, helping to uphold the project's standards and encourage other good faith article writers.
Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! – Joe (talk) 08:17, 22 June 2023 (UTC)

Musical instrument name
editTo Wiki-uk:
I am working through African lutes for an article I am creating on the English-language Wikipedia. I am contacting you to see what you know about an image File:Diffa Niger Griot DSC 0177.jpg. On [3 October 2021] you made a change to the caption, indicating the musician is playing a Komsa. I think you are right (based on the research I am doing for my article.) Can you tell me anything about what led you to put that name on the instrument. Everyone else seems to want to call it a Xalam (which is another class of instrument altogether). Anything you know or even guess would be helpful for me trying to sort out this image. The original has disappeared from Flickr.Jacqke (talk) 12:16, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
Clappers
edit@Why? I Ask. You maintain the percussion instruments template, so I thought I would see if you had an answer for me. I have been looking at 13th century A.D. images and came across the following: File:Cantiga 330 Cantigas de santa maria.jpg. I seem to recall seeing blocks like those in her hands somewhere in western music, but cannot place where. Is there a better name for what she is holding than "clapper?" After looking videos of the Thai krap saepa being played, I'm pretty sure the blocks can sound like a sharp snap or a series of clicks like castanets, and also have a rattling sound. Is there something modern like this in western band music? Best wishes Jacqke (talk) 23:50, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
- This painting is actually discussed in Percussion Instruments and their History by James Blades: "We also have the Cantigas de Santa Maria by Alphonso X "The Wise" (1252–84) giving early evidence regarding the use of castanets in Spanish song" (pg. 193). He says they are castanets, although they do simply look like basic clappers. Why? I Ask (talk) 00:33, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Why? I Ask I appreciate your sharing. Judging by the image, and others from that era with similar clappers, they must have been able to bring a lot of energy. Jacqke (talk) 00:55, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
