editAttested earliest in the Chu Ci and Guanzi (translated based on Rickett, 1998):
- 鵝鶩之舍近,鵾雞鵠䳈之通遠,鵠鵾之所在,君請式璧而聘之。 [Classical Chinese, trad.]
- From: Guanzi, 5th century BCE to 220 CE
- É wù zhī shè jìn, kūnjī hú bǎo zhī tōng yuǎn, hú kūn zhī suǒzài, jūn qǐng shì bì ér pìn zhī. [Pinyin]
- Resting places for geese and ducks are near by, [...] but jungle fowls / cranes, game cocks, swans, and bustards fly far away. I suggest you used jade bi 璧 to invite peopleliving where there are swans and jungle fowls / cranes to come to court.

Liu (1999) relates it to 鯤 (OC *kuːn, “mythical large fish”).
