Leia Zhu[1] (Chinese: 朱蕾雅, born October 2006 in Newcastle upon Tyne) is a British-Chinese classical violinist.

In 2019, she became the youngest artist to be managed by the London-based artist agency HarrisonParrott at the age of 12.[2]

Zhu performed with the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle at BMW Classics at the age of 14 live at London Trafalgar Square.[3][4]

Leia debuted with Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich under Paavo Järvi performing Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in April 2023.[5]

In October 2023, Leia opened the Philharmonia Orchestra's regional season in Leicester and Canterbury.[6]

Zhu made her BBC Proms debut at the Royal Albert Hall in July 2024, performing at the CBeebies Proms at the age of 17.[7][8]

Zhu made her Wigmore Hall debut in October 2024.[9]

Roles Zhu has within the classical music industry include Artist-in-Residence with the London Mozart Players in 2021 since the age of 14,[10][11] Patron of the HarrisonParrott Foundation since the age of 15,[12] and Education Ambassador of the London Mozart Players since the age of 16.[13]

In December 2021, Zhu joined the Irish band Westlife, performing a violin solo in ‘You Raise Me Up’ during their WeChat livestream which amassed nearly 28 million views.[14]

BBC Music Magazine Christmas Edition 2021 named 15 year-old Leia as 'Rising Star'.[15] In July 2022, aged 15, Leia was the youngest musician to be included on the list of 30 brilliant young musicians all under the age of 30 by Classic FM for its 30th birthday special edition.[16]

At the age of 16, Leia released her first book titled "Bows, Strings, and Dreams".[17][18][19][20]

Zhu has had a busy international performance career since the age of 9, performing with orchestras such as London Philharmonic Orchestra,[21] Philharmonia Orchestra,[6][22] Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich,[5] Russian National Orchestra,[23][24] Belgian National Orchestra,[25][26][27] Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra,[28] Festival Strings Lucerne,[29] Russian State Symphony Orchestra,[30][31] Mariinsky Orchestra,[32][33] London Mozart Players[34] and English Chamber Orchestra,[35] at venues and festivals including Salzburg Festival,[36] Rheingau Musik Festival,[37] Royal Festival Hall,[38] Barbican Centre,[39] Cadogan Hall,[35] Berlin Philharmonie,[40] Queen Elizabeth Hall,[41] Royal Albert Hall,[7][8] European Parliament,[42] London Milton Court,[43][44] and Wigmore Hall.[9]

Early life and education

Leia Zhu was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.[45] Her parents are not musicians and introduced music to Zhu through the radio.[46][45]

Zhu attended St. Edward's School Oxford.[47] On weekends, she studied at Junior Guildhall.[48]

Zhu began playing the violin at the age of three and a half after receiving a toy violin as a present from her grandmother.[49]

At the age of 4, Leia made her debut at the North East Last Night of the Proms in Newcastle City Hall.[50]

At the age of 5, Zhu joined the English Philharmonic Ensemble for the Candlelit Christmas Concert Tour in four cities in North England.[49]

In January 2013, Zhu, at the age of 6, was invited by the Los Angeles-based Classical Concert Chamber Orchestra to perform as a soloist for a nine-city tour in Spain.[51][52]

2014-2015

At the age of 7, Zhu made a recital at Hexham Abbey at Hexham Music Festival.[53] In 2014, when she was 7, she also performed a recital at Newcastle Cathedral.[54]

Aged 9, she performed a recital in Lower Machen, Wales for Lower Machen Festival.[55]

2015-2016

In 2015, at the age of 8, Leia performed Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the Moscow Gnessin Special School of Music Orchestra.[56] Shortly after turning 9, Zhu performed the same concerto with Russian National Orchestra at Tchaikovsky Concert Hall.[57][28]

In 2016, aged 9, Leia performed Sibelius Humoresque No. 2 with London Schools Symphony Orchestra in Royal Festival Hall[38] and Barbican Centre.[39]

In April 2016, Zhu performed Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the Surgut Philharmonic in Surgut and Khanty-Mansiysk.[58][59]

In June, she performed Lalo Symphonie Espagnole with Belgian National Orchestra under the baton of Maxim Vengerov at BOZAR in Brussels.[25][27] In the same month, she performed with Lerman Chamber Orchestra at Moscow Meets Friends at Moscow Academic Musical Theater.[30][31]

In October, she performed at Berlin Philharmonie's lunch concert.[40]

2017

In May 2017, she performed Paganini Violin Concerto No. 1 with the Symphony Orchestra at St Petersburg State Capella at the Musical Olympus Festival.[60]

One month later, in June, she performed two concerts at MozartFest Würzburg[29] in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Würzburg Residence. She performed Tchaikovsky Souvenir d'un lieu cher and Bazzini Dance of the Goblins and a selection of Bartók 44 Duos for 2 violins with Festival Strings Lucerne.[29]

In July, she performed Schubert at the Großer Saal Stiftung Mozarteum at Salzburg Festival.[36] She also performed Paganini Concerto No. 1 at Tel Aviv Performing Arts Center.[61][62]

In September, she returned to Berlin Philharmonie, where she performed Mendelssohn Violin Concerto and Sarasate Navarra with Berlin Philharmonic concertmaster Noah Bendix-Balgley.[63]

In October, she performed Bach Violin Concerto in E Major and Haydn Violin Concerto in C Major with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra[64] at Rapperswil Castle.

In November 2017, at the age of 11, Zhu performed with Russian State Symphony Orchestra[30][31] for TV channel Russia-K's 20th anniversary, performing Carmen Fantasie by Waxman and Monti Czardas with Roby Lakatos.

2018

In March 2018, Zhu performed Waxman Carmen Fantasy with Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra at the Trans-Siberian Art Festival.[65] In the same month, she toured with Kazan Chamber Orchestra La Primavera in Russia.[66]

In June, she gave a recital at Milan Conservatory. The programme included Beethoven Sonata No. 3, Waxman Carmen Fantasy, Mozart Adagio K261, Mozart Rondo K373, Kreisler Recitativo and Scherzo Caprice and Paganini La Campanella and Kreisler Marche Miniature Viennoise.[67]

Zhu performed Zoltan Kodaly's Duo for Violin and Cello with cellist Amit Peled[68] in Israel and returned to Tel Aviv Performing Arts Center, performing Ernst Last Rose of Summer in August 2018.

In September 2018, she reunited with Festival Strings Lucerne,[69] performing Mozart Adagio KV 261 and Paganini La Campanella at KKL Lucerne at Lucerne Festival.[70]

In December 2018 at the age of 12, Leia reunited with Junior Guildhall School Symphony Orchestra,[44] performing Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto.

2019

In January 2019, Zhu toured six cities in Israel with Tel Aviv Soloists Ensemble: Petach Tikva, Akko, Gush Etzion, Haifa, Tel-Aviv and Ashkelon. The programme was Mozart Violin Concerto No. 5, Sérénade mélancolique by Tchaikovsky, Carmen Fantasie by Waxman and Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso for Violin and Orchestra by Camille Saint-Saëns.[62][71][72]

In June 2019, she performed Wieniawski Violin Concerto No. 1 at White Nights Festival[73] with Mariinsky Orchestra[74][75] at Mariinsky Theatre.[74][75][76]

A month later, she toured with Festival Strings Lucerne in 3 cities in Switzerland and Germany: Morcote, Rheingau and Passau. During the tour, she made her debut at Rheingau Musik Festival[37] and Festspiele Europäische Wochen Passau. The programme included Paganini Cantabile, Saint-Saëns Havanaise and Paganini La Campanella.[77] In September, she performed with Festival Strings Lucerne at Olten Music Festival.[78]

In October, Leia performed two concerts at Golden Violins Festival Odessa;[79][80] she performed with Itzhak Rashkovsky and the Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra at the Odessa Philharmonic Theatre and Saint-Saëns Concerto No. 3 with Odessa National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet at the Odessa Opera and Ballet Theater.[79]

At the age of 13 in November 2019 she performed Sibelius Violin Concerto with the Classical Orchestra of Espinho in Portugal.[81]

2020-2021

In January 2020, she performed a recital in 1901 Art Club London which was presented by Cathy Newman.[82]

One month later, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, she performed Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E Minor and Dvořák Romance, with the English Chamber Orchestra at Cadogan Hall.[83]

Zhu was due to perform Beethoven Violin Concerto at the Interlaken Classics Festival on Easter Sunday 2020, but the event was cancelled due to the pandemic.[84]

In 2020, Leia also launched the partnership between Google Arts and Culture and HarrisonParrott; on her own YouTube channel and on Google Arts and Culture platform, Zhu shared her research and created a story introducing the composer Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst and performed two of his works The Last Rose of Summer and Der Erlkönig.[85][86][87]

In August 2021, at the age of 14, Leia performed Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso with the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle at BMW Classics. Thousands watched the performance live in London Trafalgar Square and it was live-streamed worldwide.[3]

In October 2021, she appeared on BBC Radio 3's In Tune programme with host Sarah Walker.[88]

Zhu was appointed Artist-in-Residence with the London Mozart Players in 2021.[10][89] She embeds herself within the orchestra, performing as a featured soloist, leading play/direct programmes and in chamber music, while also playing a crucial role in the orchestra’s community residencies in Croydon and Hastings through educational projects.

At the age of 15 in November 2021, Leia toured 3 cities in Italy with Festival Strings Lucerne.[90]

2022

On New Year's Day 2022, Leia performed at the Glasshouse International Centre for Music with the Royal Northern Sinfonia.[92]

In February 2022, she returned to Cadogan Hall and reunited with the English Chamber Orchestra, performing Bruch Violin Concerto.[93]

Zhu performed a recital tour in London, Germany and Switzerland, culminating with a recital at the Tonhalle Zürich[94] in March 2022.

In April 2022, she returned to the KKL Luzern, this time with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra.[95] Zhu also performed the Korngold Violin Concerto with the das Orchester Recreation, conducted by Patrick Hahn.[96]

In May 2022, at the age of 15, Leia became a Patron of the HarrisonParrott Foundation. Her focus is on expanding interest in classical music for all generations.[12][97] She performed a recital at St. Martin-in-the-Fields,[98] and returned a month later to perform Mozart Concerto No. 5 with the London Mozart Players.[99]

Leia made her Gstaad Menuhin Festival[100] debut in summer 2022, performing works by Mozart, Stravinsky, Poulenc and Sarasate. She returned to Barbican Centre,[101] performing Brahms Violin Concerto.

In November 2022 at the age of 16, Leia reappeared with London Mozart Players.[102] She performed a programme of Schubert, Poulenc, Hindemith and Franck sonatas at a recital at Oxford University's Trinity College.[103] Zhu performed Beethoven Violin Concerto with the Bath Philharmonia.[104]

In December 2022, Leia made her debut with London Philharmonic Orchestra.[21] She also reunited with the Lucerne Festival Strings.[105] Zhu performed at the carol concert for cancer charity Maggie's at Royal Hospital Chelsea; the concert was broadcast on ClassicFM on Christmas Eve, presented by Fiona Bruce.[106]

2023

On New Year's Day 2023, Zhu performed Korngold Violin Concerto with Wuppertal Sinfonieorchester under the baton of Patrick Hahn at Historische Stadthalle Wuppertal.[107]

In January 2023, Leia made her debut at Queen Elizabeth Hall,[41] Southbank Centre, performing Beethoven Violin Concerto with the London Mozart Players. She toured the concerto in a three-city tour in Israel.[45]

Leia returned to BBC Radio 3's In Tune programme in February 2023, with host Katie Derham.[108] She performed Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra at the Sheldonian Theatre.[109]

A month later, Zhu performed Beethoven Violin Concerto at the Macedonian Philharmonic with the Macedonian Philharmonic Orchestra in Skopje, North Macedonia.[110] Zhu also performed a recital of Mozart, Strauss, Debussy, Wieniawski and Sarasate at the New York University Abu Dhabi for Abu Dhabi Festival's 20th anniversary.[111]

In April 2023, Leia debuted with Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich under Paavo Järvi, performing Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto, supported by Orpheum Foundation.[5]

Leia debuted with Philharmonia Orchestra in October 2023, opening the orchestra's regional season in Leicester and Canterbury. Together, they performed at the De Montfort Hall (Leicester) and Marlowe Theatre (Canterbury).[6] She reunited with the Royal Northern Sinfonia, performing Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E Minor at the Darlington Hippodrome.[112]

In November 2023, Leia performed at the Lord Mayor's Appeal, hosted by the Lord Mayor of London Nicholas Lyons in Guildhall.[113]

2024-present

Zhu performed the Mansurian Violin Concerto No. 1 with the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra in her debut in Yerevan, Armenia in January 2024.[114]

In February 2024, Zhu made her return to the Abu Dhabi Festival, engaging in a residency program at The British School Al Khubairat. The residency concluded with a concert where Zhu served as the host, conductor, performer, and director.[115][116]

In February 2024, Zhu performed the Dvořák Violin Concerto with the Symphony Orchestra of the Balearic Islands.[117]

In March 2024, Zhu made her debut in Ireland, performing Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E Minor with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland at the National Concert Hall in Dublin. The concert was broadcast live on RTÉ lyric FM.[118]

In May 2024, Zhu performed in Poland[119] and Beethoven Violin Concerto in Extremadura, Spain.[120] She performed at the Flâneries musicales de Reims in July 2024.[121]

Zhu made her BBC Proms debut at the Royal Albert Hall in July 2024, performing at the CBeebies Wildlife Jamboree Proms at the age of 17.[7][8]

Zhu made her Wigmore Hall debut in October 2024.[9]

Personal life

During the pandemic, Leia made a series film/video news programmes with her brother Leo.[122] The pair not only produced but also presented the news items; one of the films was shortlisted by the prestigious Cinemagic 2020.[34][123]

Zhu has made appearances on a variety of UK television channels, such as BBC News[124] and Channel 4,[125] among others. Additionally, she has been featured in several UK newspapers, including The Telegraph,[126] the Daily Express[127] and Chronicle Live.[128] and interviewed in BBC Music Magazine.[129]

The Strad has featured Zhu's performances since she was eight years old.[130][131]ClassicFM featured her performances since she was 10.[132]

Musiq'3 broadcast Zhu's performance of Lalo Symphonie Espagnole 5th Movement with Belgian National Orchestra under the baton of Maxim Vengerov at BOZAR in Brussels when she was 9.[27]

Deutschlandfunk Kultur broadcast her live recording of Tchaikovsky Souvenir d'un lieu cher op.42 with Festival Strings Lucerne at MozartFest Würzburg when she was 10.[133]

BBC Radio 3 broadcast Zhu's live performance of Carmen Fantasie by Waxman with Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra at the Trans-Siberian Art Festival in 2018 when she was 11, and broadcast her Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the London Mozart Players in 2021[134] She has appeared on BBC Radio 3's In Tune programme twice, in 2021[135] and 2023.[136]

RTÉ lyric FM broadcast Zhu's performance of Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland at the National Concert Hall in Dublin in March 2024.[137]

Playing style and artistry

Zhu has been dubbed the "violin princess".[138] She has been described as "the complete package";[139] her playing has been described as "highly expressive"[140] with "emotional intensity"[141] and a "calm, solemn, with beautiful, warm and well-rounded sonority".[142] Her artistry has been deemed as "revelatory"[143] and her style is considered "bold, courageous and honest",[139] which produces "rich nuances and chiaroscuro".[90]
