Just a quick note

Just a quick note to apologise for the lack of my Wikipedia activity recently. I will be semi-inactive for at least the next week. This is due to exams, so don't give up on me yet = ). Orphaned non-free media (Image:Chiodosbros album.jpg)

Your granting of rollback

Hey there Malinaccier, we edit conflicted trying to give rollback to User:GO-PCHS-NJROTC (I was trying to approve him as well). I noticed that you left a very nice message on his talk, and was wondering if that was a template/from your userspace, or just something you made up? Hello yet again. I regretfully inform you that the bot we were using to update the user status at Wikipedia:Highly Active Users, SoxBot V, was blocked for its constant updating. With this bot out of operation, a patch is in the works. Until that patch is reviewed and accepted by the developers, some options have been presented to use as workarounds: 1) Qui monobook (not available in Internet Explorer); 2) User:Hersfold/StatusTemplate; 3) Manually updating User:StatusBot/Status/USERNAME; or 4) Not worry about it and wait for the patch to go through, which hopefully won't take long. Proper Name moves

Hello, I noticed that Hal Jeffcoat was moved to Harold Jeffcoat, with the reason given, "Move to more proper name". He has always been referred to as Hal, and baseball reference sites refer to him in the headers as this as well. Is this some sort of policy, and if so, why has Ken Griffey Jr. not been moved to his proper name, George Kenneth Griffey Jr. or George Griffey Jr., or Sammy Sosa to Samuel Sosa? His son, another baseball player, is also named Harold Jeffcoat. I do not understand why this change was necessary. SashaNein (talk) 14:03, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

My admin coaching request

I know that I have not been active for very long here, but since I became active, I've mostly been doing things like vandal-fighting and taggin. I ask how much of my edit history you looked at, as, as of late, I have not been very active in the main space. The reason for this is that my computer is nearing death. Every once and while I must quit my browser so that my computer does not crash. Some times I have to quit it because it cannot load diffs. So, I have not been doing much, mostly userspace editing as you saw. When I am able to acess other computers, like my brother's, I usually become more active against vandalism, as his computer can handle the scripts I have installed, such as TW.

I know I have not been here long, and I may not have enough experience in some aspects, but in others I do, and having a coach would greatly improve my understanding of the current standing policies and guilelines.

Based on the nature of the comments (extreme and or/racist vulgarity), I don't think anyone would have a problem you using rollback in that case - though RFPP would've been a better way to resolve the situation. xenocidic (talk) 10:17, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

My RFB

Thank you for your comments in my RFB. Since it was only at 64%, it was a shoo-in to be unsuccessful, so I withdrew. I didn't want it to run until its scheduled close time because my intent in standing for RFB was to help the bureaucrats with their workload, not give them one more RfX to close. Through the course of my RFB, I received some very valuable feedback, some of it was contradictary, but other points were well agreed upon. I have ceased my admin coaching for now to give me time to revamp my method. I don't want to give up coaching completely, but I'm going to find a different angle from which to approach it. As for my RFA Standards, I am going to do some deep intraspection. I wrote those standards six months ago and I will slowly retool them. This will take some time for me to really dig down and express what I want in an admin candidate. If, after some serious time of deep thought, I don't find anything to change in them, I'll leave them the way they are. I'm not going to change them just because of some community disagreement as to what they should be. Will I stand for RFB again in the future? I don't know. Perhaps some time down the road, when my tenure as an administrator is greater than one year, if there is a pressing need for more active bureaucrats, maybe. Two editors have expressed interest in nominating me for adminship. AWC

You probably don't know who I am, but I am a user who also supports the AWC. Because it's most likely going to be deleted, I have begun to work on a new page, the Challenge Center (I didn't add the link because writing my username is repetitive. If you want to see it, it's on the top of my userpage.) Anyway, looking at the MFD for AWC, I saw the deletionists want updaters. Therefore, I intend to have three overseers of the site. Around the World

Request

You were highly recommended to me. As an especially wiki-capable individual.

I'll be co-coordinating a major collaboration, the "Around the World Competition", at the WP:AWC July 15th.

The problem is, I don't have any co-coordinators yet, and time is rapidly running out. I'm looking for a couple skilled and dedicated Wikipedians.

It will entail 1) preparing for the event, and 2) overseeing the actual event.

The competition may run for several months, or even longer. There's no need for you to commit to the whole thing, I can find others later after it's started if you should get pulled away or burnt out.

But I need some help getting this up and running, through mid-August at least.

The competition, a fun way to frame a collaboration, will focus on the development of a set of 200+ pages to be transferred to article space when they are completed (some of them are complete enough that they are in article space already, and those are included in this project too). It would take a single individual years working full time to complete these by himself, so it is necessary to seek the community's help. And we might as well make it fun, to attract as many people as possible.

Each contestant will be using advanced tools like AWB and Linky to improve a single information item at a time across the entire set.

That will allow the building of skill with respect to tracking down and presenting each data type, which should improve the overall efficiency and quality of the project. And it's a novel approach which presents the World itself as a sort of race track for the contestants to compete on.

This is going to be a blast.

When completed, each page will be a profile/outline/(web)site-map of a country of the World. The set will be a valuable reference aid and a showpiece of Wikipedia.

Once it begins, co-coordinators will need to be on hand to help answer participants' questions on the talk page, and to dole out the assignments. Also, I'll be dividing the responsibility of presenting the awards, amongst the co-coordinators. One per award type.

This project is the largest wiki-collaboration I've ever attempted. Bigger than the main page redesign, bigger than the Tip of the day project, and even bigger than the help system overhaul.

I'm in the process of writing up the instructions for the contest, and I've been working with graphics designers to create the awards that will be given away. And I've been working on the pages themselves, because there needs to be enough quality content there for participants to easily envision what they will be working to complete. The AWC's newsletter is being used to promote the event, but the event also needs to be promoted far and wide on Wikipedia itself (on relevant pages) when the time comes (after the awards are ready). I've contacted the editor-in-chief of The Signpost, but have not received a reply, so I'll probably have to start visiting their newsroom on a regular basis.

As you can see, I have my hands full, and I could sure use some help.

The page titles leave something to be desired, yes, but I'm working on that. ;)

The above are the most developed pages so far, and even these are far from being finished. They're missing images, the standard design these are based on is still under development (and these all get changed when the design changes, receiving new standard links, being rearranged, etc.), some are missing maps, and so on.

Once they are refined, they will be even more impressive than they are now. But they're useful in their present states, so I moved them to article space so users can benefit from them.

Imagine if we had one for every single country.  :)

Well, we do!

But the rest are in much rougher shape than the above. See the list at Wikipedia:WikiProject Lists of basic topics. Notice the region section and government section are in error on many of them, because they utilize temporary standard links (generated by template) to provide a starting point for editing (not all countries have parliaments, for example).

Each standard item must be checked on every list, and if you make a pass with AWB on all 200 lists for the hundreds of items that are currently on the lists (and there will be more), you can see this would take a single person many months.

Which makes this perfect for a collaboration.

But there are certain sections I think should be completed before the competition begins, to give the participants a sense of what these will become, and to avoid confusion. The intros need to be completed (lead paragraph, location map, flag, and coat of arms). Then the administrative division section, and the government branches sections - these have the most customized information and I'm not sure if they can easily be doled out one item at a time to participants. Besides, the coordinators need to be familiar with making passes on these with AWB and/or Linky, to be able to help others with their questions, and to provide tips on how to do it effectively (there are many tricks and shortcuts).

Also, I'm not sure yet how the collaboration on the history section will be handled either.

But we'll figure something out.

By the way, it's already been announced that the the competition will be held at the AWC, but we can run it on a subpage.

One of my strategies is to boost the subscribership of the AWC newsletter as much as possible, and use that to announce updates to this event. I've already arranged this with Sharkface and have his complete cooperation and permission. The competition will need to be promoted before and during, to help keep the excitement and enthusiasm level up up up.

By the time the competition starts, I hope to have the AWC's newsletter subscribership up to over 200. So far it's at 57.

Since you are on the project now, could you post the following notice somewhere on your user or talk page so more people can see it?

Plans / task list

Here's a better organized list of what I'm trying to get accomplished:

  • Get approval for changing the names of all the pages in the set (and the superset they belong to) - pending
  • Produce the awards (at least 3)
    • Design the concept for each award (their general look) -  Done
    • Find graphics designers to help with creating the images for the awards - ongoing, until they are complete. In communication with five currently.
    • Assign the image for each award to a graphics designer to create/complete
      • Globe - requested submissions, one more element (a globe stand) is needed for compositing

    • Refine the set's standard design (the template) based on ideas, suggestions, and feedback generated during the competition, and add corresponding challenges to the queue (note that the template won't actually be used, it just happens to be where the standard design is, by virtue of being designed there initially. The template was used to create the pages, and update them before customized info was added to them.)

First task

I guess it's time to get your feet wet.  :)

The outlines each need a flag and coat of arms.

I used standard file names to generate links for them, but that only matched some of them.

I need you to fix the red links, so that the flag and coat of arms display on each page.

Linky can be used for this, as can AWB.

An effective approach for isolating the pages with redlinks would be to place a list of all the outlines in a sandbox, and then use search/replace to convert those file names to the standard name used for the flag links. The links that don't work will turn up red, showing you which pages need its flag link to be replaced. Remove the blue links from the list, and then convert the links back to the outline names, and there is your working list. Repeat the process in another sandbox for the coat of arms links. Make sense?

The flag and coat of arms are displayed on the article for each country.

Actually, since the task is visually intensive, you'll find Linky more effective. But it requires Firefox.
Once Linky is installed, you can select (holding down the left mouse button) an area of your screen, and then hit the right mouse button to get your pull-down menu. Linky will be on there. Click linky and load the highlighted links on your screen into tabs (it can handle 99 tabs at a time). Switch between tabs with Ctrl-tab. Once you are done working on a country in a tab, press Ctrl-W, and that will instantly close the current tab and display the next one with the next country in it. It's lightning fast once the tabs are loaded initially. For this type of editing, it dances circles around AWB. (AWB is great for searching and replacing; Linky is great for hands-on editing of multiple pages where you need to see what you are doing, viewing, previewing, etc.).


I just finished repairing the location map links using Linky to preload and display the pages. And now I'm using Linky to preload the pages so I can easily insert lead paragraphs into them.
Interiot swears by tabs, and says if you aren't hitting Ctrl-tab or Ctrl-W a lot (referring to the Firefox keys), then you just aren't going fast enough.
It's hard to grasp it until you actually try it. I didn't get it either until I experienced it. Linky + tabs rock. The Transhumanist    21:11, 12 June 2008 (UTC)


Just in case you didn't know, you have to be listed on the AutoWikiBrowser's Checkpage on Wikipedia before AWB will work. Admins can add and delete users from the checkpage. The Transhumanist    21:15, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

CAUTION: If you use AWB on the set, be sure to have "Auto tag", "Apply general fixes", and "Unicodify whole article" disabled. The pages don't need tags (we already know they're drafts), and the general fixes have some bugs (it ruins "main" links with pipes in them) - also, these pages are works in progress and utilize non-standard syntax to guide editors in their development (they remove or upgrade the temp syntax as they do their fixes). Things like empty links that are there to be filled in, temporary pipes that are there as place holders to be replaced by the actual pipe, etc. AWB's auto features wipe all that out, so be careful. First task (nearly) complete

I have completed the first task of placing a flag and coat of arms picture on every needing article. The only problem is that the Coat of Arms for these two countries is missing. Nice job. Those pages are already starting to look good.
There were a few coats of arms that were missing or suffered from some glitch. I've fixed the ones I could. I couldn't find one for:
A bot came by and removed the coat of arms image from:
Fair use applies - the articles are about those countries, their governments, their symbols, etc. Note that the coat of arms identifies a country (in the same way a logo identifies a company; e.g., see IBM), and can be used when covering that country. We need to find what workaround allows the main articles and templates for those countries to display the coat of arms without the bot coming along and removing them, and use the same workaround.
For those that are missing, they can probably be found on each country's website. When uploading the images, be sure to include a fair use rationale tag.

Take a look at the pairs of flags and coats of arms displayed on these pages (speed tip: use Linky, then cycle through them with Ctrl-W):

And then Quiddity reminded me that admins have "move subpages".

Please delete Wikipedia:WikiProject Topical outlines (I copy/pasted it), and then move Wikipedia:WikiProject Lists of basic topics along with all of its subpages to Wikipedia:WikiProject Topical outlines.

It will save me a lot of work.  :)

For future reference, I thought of a way to move more than 100 subpages. Unclick or disable "move subpages" and then move the parent page back. Then reactivate "move subpages" and do the move again. No. I tried that, but because redirects are automatically created for moved pages, when you try to move the page again, you automatically move the same pages you already moved (now as redirects) and get an error. We'll have to think of something else. :\ Malinaccier (talk) 22:51, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
I'm not sure we are talking about the same thing. 1) Move page 1 with 100 subpages to page 2. 2) Disable "move subpages". 3) Move page 2 back over the redirect at page 1. 4) Delete page 2 (it's now a redirect page). 5) Reactivate "move subpages" 6) Move page 1 with another 100 subpages to page 2. That's exactly what I'm talking about :). Because every automatically moved page is recreated as a redirect, when you try to move the subpages again it automatically tries to move the first 100 subpages (alphabetically), which are still there but in redirect form. Status report

Things are moving ahead pretty much on schedule.

Getting the rename approved took over a week (at the Village pump), and the rename should be completed in the next day or two (by a bot operator).

The main set now looks like this. Be sure to check out the countries listed on there. I believe the new names are more professional and representative than the old ones were, and profoundly affect how they may be linked to and presented throughout the encyclopedia. When completed, these outlines will be perfect companions to the articles on those countries.

One of the images for the three awards is almost complete, and currently looks like this:

We're also working on two more images for two more awards: a globe-in-stand and a trophy. For the globe we're waiting on a stand for the globe to be set in, and the conceptual prototype for the trophy looks like this:

I'm a little behind on the promotion, as a newsletter is due to be sent out.

Prepping the pages in the set is also moving forward. You did an excellent job on fixing the flag and coat of arms image links, and I've started adding lead paragraphs. After the leads are added and the image sizes of the flags and coats of arms are adjusted to match each other, the intros will be done! Then the main problem we will have will be the regions and government branches sections. Those are intensive. We'll need more co-coordinators to complete those, and...

I'm in the process of recruiting more co-coordinators.

Concern re rollback

Hi. I wonder if you'd take a look at some edits by an editor to whom you recently gave rollback capability. This diff rolled back a spelling correction, the next one, which I queried at the editor's talk page and which he/she has since self-reverted, removed stats added to an infobox, and the next one removed an interwiki link.
