Unexplained deletion of my attempt to talk to EdJohnston

Why did you revert my attempt to talk with User talk:EdJohnston? Batternut (talk) 09:19, 26 May 2016 (UTC)

TPS that looks like an accidental rollback, they probably won't even aware they'd done it - its all too easy to do. WCMemail 09:26, 26 May 2016 (UTC)
Correct. Sorry Batternut, it's a mystery to me, certainly unintentional. Can't for the life of me see how that happened, especially as I don't have EdJohnston on my watchlist, or you. Cheers. Moriori (talk) 21:37, 26 May 2016 (UTC)

Hello. Please refrain from repeatedly adding the pseudoscientific designation "cryptid" to the introduction of Loch Ness Monster. Per WP:UNDUE, we don't provide undue emphasis on pseudoscience. Instead, let's stick to folklore rather than its interpretation via a largely internet-based pseudoscience. Thanks. :bloodofox: (talk) 01:49, 14 June 2016 (UTC)

You were mentioned at WP:AN/3RR

Just letting you know your name came up at a recent WP:AN/3RR report. Fyunck(click) (talk) 05:59, 14 June 2016 (UTC)

Hi!

Thanks for reminding me about the 3RR, but according to the Wikipedia page on edit warring, reverting obvious vandalism is exempt from the 3RR. If you still believe that my actions constitute edit warring, please leave a message on my talk page. 24.15.68.186 (talk) 22:05, 27 June 2016 (UTC) Update: Sorry, my wifi switched. My device loves to hop on to my neighbor's unsecured wifi. Anyway, you can leave a message on my own talk page. 42.118.196.184 (talk) 22:09, 27 June 2016 (UTC)

The silly season came early this year

It’s ok, I have a thicker skin than some around these parts. But it would have been nice to be advised that I was named and mentioned in this hilarity and had been given opportunity to comment. It opened at 12.15am today and was closed at 3.48 am (my time) so I was asleep and therefore had no opportunity to contribute my 2c.

Funny thing is I got alerts notifying me that there were editors (who I have never ever interacted with) who took the trouble to thank me for my edit at the RfA page. They clearly saw that what some say was a snide remark was a harmless dig at unmistakable hypocrisy. Funny how people react sometimes. The silly season gets earlier every year. name it twice

Thank you for quality articles such as Thomas Bracken, for adding (attractions, slogan ...) to it's so nice they named it twice, for warning of unconstructive editing, 10 years ago and now, for precision and "hell, no fun", for a lasting image, - you are an awesome Wikipedian!

License tagging for File:Lydia Ko - 27067658976 A.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Lydia Ko - 27067658976 A.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.

To add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 02:05, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

Why not upload derivatives to Commons? That way, the image is available to other than the English Wikipedia, too. And cross referencing for licensing purposes is somewhat easier. Schwede66 06:16, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
Do you not know how to upload to Commons? Do you want a hand? Schwede66 02:00, 27 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the offer Schwede, but I've decided to stop uploading images. I'm too chronologically challenged to put up with the hassles that always seem to surround images/commons. I uploaded an image of a stamp which I photographed, showing Francis Chichester who was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for becoming the first person to sail single-handed around the world by the clipper route, and the fastest circumnavigator. He was also an aviator and the stamp I uploaded was issued by Norfolk Island and showed Chichester approaching the island in his Gipsy Moth on a historic flight. But no, someone found a reason why it should get zapped. Don't remember exactly what it was, but I simply was not prepared to debate for commonsense with a commons person. I also uploaded an image of a stamp featuring our Scott Dixon, issued by New Zealand Post for its Champions Of World Motorsport series. Same result -- down the gurgler. Plus others too. I uploaded three images last week, and after doing so, I thought to myself, no more, can't take the risk of deletion anymore, hence I am retiring the 500D. My blood pressure is dropping already. Hi!

I noticed that you blocked this IP address indefinitely! Per WP:IPBLENGTH this should very rarely be done! Is there a reason you believed that an indefinite block was necessary? A User (contribs) 12:37, 7 September 2016 (UTC)

Please do not block IP addresses indefinitely! It is terrible practice! If you fail to lift or provide a satisfactory reason for each of these blocks, you may be desysopped! Thank you. A User (contribs) 06:12, 8 September 2016 (UTC)

Indef blocks can be made, but yes, you make a point here. Tell you what, I will unblock, and trust you will put the IP on your watchlist. Moriori (talk) 22:34, 9 September 2016 (UTC)

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Moriori. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:48, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Moriori.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Hello, Moriori. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Mdann52 (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

More on Jack Nissenthal

Hi Moriori. Just to fill in. I intend to use James Leasor's 1975 work Green Beach as the backbone source for the article. It will initially suffer from relying on a single source I know, but it will be a start I think for a worthy subject. There appears to be other material that I am coming across. I need a photo too. This will be my first article. I have always wanted to create a fully fashioned article with all sections in place, not just a stub. Equally I have always been somehow intimidated by the prospect of creating an article. Dunno why. Fear of my incompetence being exposed probably. After I can surmount this rather odd phobia I assume the others will be easier, and I have at least half a dozen interesting and untouched subjects in mind. I will keep you updated. Irondome (talk) 01:11, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the update Irondome. Go for it, and don't be too bothered if a tweak here or there is required. He is a very interesting subject. Cheers. Moriori (talk) 01:42, 30 November 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for your feedback

Hi thank you for your participation here! Just a heads up, there is no one singular title being proposed. I am looking for editors to make their own suggestions, or to write 'Keep' if they are happy with the current one. Your Oppose is a little out of place and might confuse editors who come to the discussion. Any chance of you editing your comment to maintain the format by typing KEEP followed with your original reason? Thanks if you can make the change. Veritycheck✔️ (talk) 03:28, 14 January 2017 (UTC)

Indefinite block of IP

See Special:Contributions/117.24.120.171. I assume you mistook it for an account MusikAnimal talk 01:38, 17 January 2017 (UTC)

Reviewing your blocking log, I must say, with all due respect, you might be a little harsh with the block button. You've been around for quite a while so maybe policies have changed, not sure, for instance disruption from this this IP extended no more than 15 minutes but you blocked the IP indefinitely. First off, in general we never indefinitely block IPs. See Wikipedia:Vandalism-only account#IP addresses; IPs are not accounts and cannot be treated as such. Unless there's a lengthy history of disruption, you should assume someone innocent will eventually come by and edit behind that IP. So start with the standard 31 hour block, then if they continue to disrupt try a week, month, and so forth. Jumping to lengthy durations seems punitive and is contrary to the open philosophy of the wiki. Also only use options like "Block user from sending email" if they abused that privilege. Overall I recommend giving Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Blocking a read. Again, please don't be offended, I'm only trying to help. I am sure you mean no harm, and I hope this friendly advice finds you well MusikAnimal talk 04:52, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
It does, and your advice is accepted in the spirit given, and is noted. Thanks. Moriori (talk) 23:50, 17 January 2017 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a discussion on the backlog of unpatrolled files, consensus was found to create a new user right for autopatrolling file uploads. Implementation progress can be tracked on Phabricator.
  • The BLPPROD grandfather clause, which stated that unreferenced biographies of living persons were only eligible for proposed deletion if they were created after March 18, 2010, has been removed following an RfC.
  • An RfC has closed with consensus to allow proposed deletion of files. The implementation process is ongoing.
  • After an unsuccessful proposal to automatically grant IP block exemption, consensus was found to relax the criteria for granting the user right from needing it to wanting it.

Technical news

  • After a recent RfC, moved pages will soon be featured in a queue similar to Special:NewPagesFeed and require patrolling. Moves by administrators, page movers, and autopatrolled editors will be automatically marked as patrolled.
  • Cookie blocks have been deployed. This extends the current autoblock system by setting a cookie for each block, which will then autoblock the user if they switch accounts, even under a new IP.

Stig Harder, Fashion Net & Lumiere

Hey Moriori,

Could you help restore the articles for FASHION NET at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fashion_Net, Lumiere at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lumiere_(magazine) and my own at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stig_Harder? I read the reason was there weren't enough references online to establish notability.

I got in touch with Justlettersandnumbers and she/he informed me I could request a WP:deletion review with the reason "significant new information has come to light since a deletion that would justify recreating the deleted page." At the Deletion Review article, I read I should talk to the closing administrator first.

"Norfolk Wave"

I'm not claiming that the wave is somehow "unique", but that it's a part of the culture there. The link indicates that it's part of the culture there (which was the point), and something the locals are keen to preserve. I know there are other links/citations which say the same, but I'm still hunting for those and will add them when I get the chance. The fact that people in rural communities tend to wave to each other is neither here nor there, as the article doesn't say it's unique and neither does the reference. The link provided does in fact mention the fact that the Islanders are descended from the population of Pitcairn, but since that wasn't the issue there, it's irrelevant to the point - there are plenty of references elsewhere in the article regarding the Pitcairners. BigHaz - Schreit mich an 02:23, 12 May 2017 (UTC)

It may be part of the culture there, as it is in the community where I live, but that doesn't make it notable. It's really "so what?" trivia. Moriori (talk) 02:37, 12 May 2017 (UTC)
Which is why there's not an article on it by itself. I would suggest that if the custom is something the locals are particularly fond of and keen to preserve (on a recent visit there, there was a much stronger focus on what they do differently from the Australian mainland, although personal experience doesn't count as a source), that makes it at least slightly notable. This is to inform you that an attempt is being made to overturn an RfC that you voted on

This is to inform you that an attempt is being made to overturn an RfC that you voted on (2 RfCs, actually, one less than six months ago and another a year ago). The new RfC is at:

Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#RfC: Allow private schools to be characterized as non-affiliated as well as religious, in infobox?

Specifically, it asks that "religion = none" be allowed in the infobox.

The first RfC that this new RfC is trying to overturn is:

The result of that RfC was "unambiguously in favour of omitting the parameter altogether for 'none' " and despite the RfC title, additionally found that "There's no obvious reason why this would not apply to historical or fictional characters, institutions etc.", and that nonreligions listed in the religion entry should be removed when found "in any article".

The second RfC that this new RfC is trying to overturn is:

The result of that RfC was that the "in all Wikipedia articles, without exception, nonreligions should not be listed in the Religion= parameter of the infobox.".

Note: I am informing everyone who commented on the above RfCs, whether they supported or opposed the final consensus. --Guy Macon (talk) 03:17, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

Hello Moriori,

I was the person who was suggesting that the phrase "alternative medicine" and "psuedo medicine" be removed from "Osteopathy". I appreciate your edits, but I wanted to explain why I would like those terms removed even though the rest of the article does explain osteopathy is different from osteopathic medicine.

The concept of osteopathy cannot be completely separate from osteopathic medicine. Let's talk about osteopathic manipulation first. I am a medical student at a D.O school, and I don't believe that osteopathic manipulation works all the time. But extensive research is being done to find out how much of it is supported by evidence. There are some evidence that some components have therapeutic value and some don't. Therefore, I don't think osteopathic manipulation is alternative medicine or pseudoscience. Now let's talk about osteopathy. Frequently at school people use the word osteopathy, so I had no idea that "osteopathy" was different from "osteopathic medicine" untill I saw that there were two separate articles on Wikipedia. If a osteopathic medicine school used the terms interchangeably, I could only imagine a lay person confusing the two. Therefore, using the tag "alternative medicine and pseudo medicine" damages the reputation of osteopathic medicine and the descriptions are not even true. I hope you could consider keeping the terms "alternative medicine and pseudo medicine" out of this article. Thank you.

Invitation to Admin confidence survey

Hello,

Beginning in September 2017, the Wikimedia Foundation Anti-harassment tool team will be conducting a survey to gauge how well tools, training, and information exists to assist English Wikipedia administrators in recognizing and mitigating things like sockpuppetry, vandalism, and harassment.

The survey should only take 5 minutes, and your individual response will not be made public. This survey will be integral for our team to determine how to better support administrators.

To take the survey sign up here and we will send you a link to the form.

We really appreciate your input!

Asking for help

Hope you remember me, the odd editor from Jayne Mansfield. Twofingered Typist has finished a thorough copy-edit of the article. Very nice job. (S)he left a few comments and observations. I haven't seen many high capacity editors interested in the article so far, and you have given me a hope in that regard. Can you, if you have time, take a look at the observations on the talk page? May be lend a hand or something. I have messed up the copy so much in the past that I think I really need help there. With your and TT's help I hope to get this to a featured article level. Aditya(talkcontribs) 17:22, 19 November 2017 (UTC)

I haven't much time to spend help improve articles so I am afraid I will be of little help. I can see it would need some effort to achieve FA. Good luck.Moriori (talk) 20:42, 21 November 2017 (UTC)

Rfc notice

More options have been added to the Rfc at Charles, Prince of Wales. You may want to add that article to your watchlist :) GoodDay (talk) 16:46, 21 November 2017 (UTC)

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Moriori. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

Hi Moriori. Re your revert(s): there now is a redirect for "History of homosexuality in Great Britain and Ireland (#REDIRECT Timeline of LGBT history in the United Kingdom) I understand your first revert but the second time it's not redlinked anymore. I'd appreciate if we can resolve this amicably. Regards. DadaNeem (talk) 09:16, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

Of course. Let's look at the problematic paragraph:
"Hyde later in 1972 wrote the first history of homosexuality in Great Britain and Ireland, The Other Love, perhaps his most memorable and long-lasting work. With its rich and detailed narratives, "fusing legal knowledge with illustrative anecdotage," it was the most extensive book on the subject. Antony Grey, secretary of the Homosexual Law Reform Society (HLRS) provided case histories and cuttings from the society's files for its contemporary section."
The link in the first sentence does not go to a first history of homosexuality in Great Britain and Ireland, or to the book The Other Love. It goes to a redirect to a Wiki list which is hardly the same thing. Another point, the paragraph is missing references.
Maybe I am seeing a problem where there isn't one, so tell you what, I will copy this over to the article's talk page to hopefully get more input. Moriori (talk) 22:58, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, a new section has been added to the username policy which disallows usernames containing emoji, emoticons or otherwise "decorative" usernames, and usernames that use any non-language symbols. Administrators should discuss issues related to these types of usernames before blocking.

Miscellaneous

  • Over the last few months, several users have reported backlogs that require administrator attention at WP:ANI, with the most common backlogs showing up on WP:SPI, WP:AIV and WP:RFPP. It is requested that all administrators take some time during this month to help clear backlogs wherever possible. It should be noted that AIV reports are not always valid; however, they still need to be cleared, which may include needing to remind users on what qualifies as vandalism.
  • The Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative is conducting a survey for English Wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works (i.e. which problems it deals with well and which problems it struggles with). If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be emailed to you via Special:EmailUser.

Hello,

I am not quite sure I understand the objection you made to a recent edit on the above article. Although the deleted text does seem to round out the article, it is not crucial to a reader's understanding. Perhaps I am missing something?

Georgejdorner (talk) 22:15, 26 December 2017 (UTC)

You surprise me. This article has an intro which says a woman from Vancouver was found dead in a Los Angelus hotel. The background section doesn't explain when she left her home, why she did so, or what she planned to do. Essential to a well rounded, informative article IMMHO. Please use rollback to undo vandalism

Hello, pleas use rollback (or an equivalent tool) to undo vandalism ... at Jonas Salk, the vandal, made two vandalism edits, but you only undid one of them. Also, I've updated the archive number on your talk page header; hope you don't mind. Graham87 05:53, 31 December 2017 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC has closed with a consensus that candidates at WP:RFA must disclose whether they have ever edited for pay and that administrators may never use administrative tools as part of any paid editing activity, except when they are acting as a Wikipedian-in-Residence or when the payment is made by the Wikimedia Foundation or an affiliate of the WMF.
  • Editors responding to threats of harm can now contact the Wikimedia Foundation's emergency address by using Special:EmailUser/Emergency. If you don't have email enabled on Wikipedia, directly contacting the emergency address using your own email client remains an option.

Technical news

  • A tag will now be automatically applied to edits that blank a page, turn a page into a redirect, remove/replace almost all content in a page, undo an edit, or rollback an edit. These edits were previously denoted solely by automatic edit summaries.
