DYK

Sorry for removing some content from Canyon Kid's Corner that you added. I also removed content that I added. I don't understand why the reviewer doesn't want information about the host in the article when he is pretty much only known for that. I was also planning on redirecting Jim Henry to the article due to the information about him. I don't know what to do and I don't know if there is a relevant guideline that can help. My head is hurting so badly due to this. Pinging theleekycauldron because I discussed the nomination with them once before. SL93 (talk) 05:58, 13 June 2022 (UTC)

@SL93: Sounds like this is something I should dig in to. Give me some time to figure it out; meanwhile, I'd advise that you take some downtime and come back to this with a clearer head :) theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 06:02, 13 June 2022 (UTC)

Logo alttext

Thanks so much for the tip, I didn't see it was throwing an error on my end. I do have another question though; for those multi-image infoboxes (see WDJT-TV) I don't see the alttext is rendered in the pop-up; is there any way to fix that? Nate (chatter) 03:06, 19 June 2022 (UTC)

@Mrschimpf: The infobox supports two images natively—and two-image support is fairly recent for this template, so it's not as heavily used as it should be. I would remove all but the CBS 58 logo on that one. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 03:16, 19 June 2022 (UTC)
I didn't even want those three images there, honestly as it needlessly clutters the box, and I'm glad to hear that they added a second image (that's all we really need outside oddball cases like Yuma). Nate (chatter) 03:20, 19 June 2022 (UTC)
It's technically there for cases more like Wowow — logo + studio image. It's much more common in the Japanese/Korean articles. When I harmonized the code of the various TV and radio infoboxes of this type, I made sure to bring it to the whole field. IMO, the MeTV logo should not be there either — it's a national logo with a city name under it, which if you're not (say) The CW or PBS is not quite a fit. @Fox4fan, is it covered in any reliable sources? Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 03:29, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

Yes Fox4fan (talk) 03:32, 26 June 2022 (UTC) https://fox4kc.com/news/fox4-launches-new-4pm-newscast-featuring-more-live-local-stories/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fox4fan (talkcontribs) 03:33, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

In this case, @Fox4fan, I'd rather have an article from (say) TVNewsCheck or NextTV, not just a press release on a station site. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 03:45, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

Ok Fox4fan (talk) 03:45, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

Why rv Fox4fan (talk) 03:53, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

The file you uploaded was incorrectly tagged for license reasons. Logos need to be tagged with an appropriate fair use rationale, and it wasn't added correctly to the infobox, either. I did go and get the correct new logo from the site and put it up with the correct metadata. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 03:57, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

Ok Fox4fan (talk) 04:01, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

Another note: In infoboxes, you shouldn't use [[File:]] syntax in most cases. e.g. |logo=Example.jpg instead of |logo=[[File:Example.jpg]]. This breaks several sizing mechanisms in the infobox code. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 04:04, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup 2022 July newsletter

The third round of the 2022 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 180 points, which is a lower figure than last year when 294 points were needed to progress to round 4. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose, with 746 points, a tally built both on snooker and other sports topics, and on more general subjects.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132, with 683 points, garnered mostly from "In the news" items and related DYKs.
  • Sammi Brie, with 527, from a variety of submissions related to radio and television stations.

Between them contestants achieved 5 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 51 good articles, 149 DYK entries, 68 ITN entries, and 109 good article reviews. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article nomination, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. New QPQ rules at DYK

Hi @Sammi Brie -- I just saw your comments on one of Kaleeb18's DYK nominations. I did indeed miss the rule change (whoops) about DYK reviewers now counting a user's nominations instead of credits for the QPQ requirements. I'm wondering: what's the best way to track a newer user's DYK nominations? The QPQ Check tool only flags credits after they've been given. Is this something we just have to take on good faith from the nominator? Thanks, Alanna the Brave (talk) 13:13, 18 July 2022 (UTC)

Separate dates

I was thinking of working on WTGS now that Beaufort and Hilton Head Island newspapers were on Newspapers.com. Turns out that while the page (and probably FCC documents) states that broadcasting started in 1982, sources from the time state that it signed on in 1985. Which date would be more correct? wizzito | say hello! 02:31, 27 July 2022 (UTC)

See here and here for sources. wizzito | say hello! 02:33, 27 July 2022 (UTC)
@Wizzito Definitely 1985. They got the CP 11/17/81, call letters were assigned 3/22/82 (which might be where the problem lies), but no license to cover was filed until 9/6/85. That's about the time of the link. First mention I can find in SC was [1] in March of '82. Sure sounds like the CP was sold at some point! Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 02:38, 27 July 2022 (UTC)
Thx. Going to add that to the article as a start. wizzito | say hello! 02:42, 27 July 2022 (UTC)
@Sammi Brie: Wizzito's edits could use some work. Some copy editing may be in order. Mvcg66b3r (talk) 02:51, 27 July 2022 (UTC)
I'm going to say something here, @Mvcg66b3r. I had planned on looking at/assisting with this once Wizzito had done a bit more. You don't need to pounce five minutes later on me and say "his edits could use some work". Please, I implore you, stop telling me what to do. I don't mind suggestions; I don't mind hearing about articles in bad shape. I do mind being told what to do while working on other projects, and I do mind someone criticizing a well-meaning editor's work within minutes of its publication. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 03:24, 27 July 2022 (UTC)
Yeah, my apologies (again). I don't mean to be telling you what to do, I was just offering suggestions. Mvcg66b3r (talk) 03:27, 27 July 2022 (UTC)
I used a previous edit by an IP that was removed as being "irrelevant" (I felt it wasn't) as a basis for what I was going to write. That part is complete now. wizzito | say hello! 04:23, 27 July 2022 (UTC)
I'm now going to start working on 1986-1987 events, including the near-bankruptcy of the station wizzito | say hello! 04:24, 27 July 2022 (UTC)
I'm about to publish a bit more material and then back out for a bit. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 04:41, 27 July 2022 (UTC)
I think I'm done for right now, Wizzito. End goal with this could be the GA pipeline... Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 05:00, 27 July 2022 (UTC)

BTW you said in a recent edit summary that local newspapers on Hilton Head pre-1999 weren't available; I think you're mistaken; quite recently, Island Packet got issues back to its founding in 1970. wizzito | say hello! 21:27, 27 July 2022 (UTC)
@Wizzito I meant NewsBank's holding of the Savannah Morning News... A few more years of that would be immensely useful for when WTGS was taken over by WJCL. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 22:19, 27 July 2022 (UTC)
Ohhh, okay. Thanks for clarification wizzito | say hello! 01:17, 28 July 2022 (UTC)

Hoping to resolve this matter

I was hoping to fix this issue without resorting to an ANI thread. Any help would be appreciated in case I missed something and need to improve. HangingCurveSwing for the fence 21:01, 3 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi @HangingCurve, this makes me happy to see.
I think my first step would be thinking about sourcing and when to add content:
  • There are a lot of extraneous synthesized facts that I see you add to articles. For instance, WTVK thus became one of the few stations in the country to have been a primary affiliate of all of the Big Three networks. or While this was part of a larger affiliation deal with KDNL's then-owner, Cox Broadcasting, most of the markets in KPLR's cable footprint had enough stations by this point to provide a local Fox affiliate. This would have made the prospect of KPLR as a multi-state Fox affiliate unattractive to the Koplars in any event. Would there be a reliable source to say that? When I write articles, I like to ensure as many of my sentences as possible can be cited to a reliable source—the way it should be. That's the approach that has helped improve so many articles. I don't have much tolerance for uncited mush in a topic area that has long been rich with it. No source will say "Detroit should have supported three independents..." In some cases, such as CKMI airing Global shows in the 1980s, my own research found no backup for the assertion that CKMI aired any Global programming.
  • Consider how wording changes can introduce subtle and hard-to-detect errors, one of the issues that I know someone brought to you.
I'd also consider familiarizing myself with the Manual of Style. In the TV stations topic area, we tended to do our own thing for a long time. Then we finally were made to realize that we're part of a larger encyclopedia that has a Manual of Style. Particularly I'd note these since you undid them in your edits:
In terms of finding better sources, The Wikipedia Library is a big help. I personally have applied through TWL for Newspapers.com access, which has opened a lot of doors in this field (look at all the improved pages that have followed—hundreds of them since 2019!). It doesn't make for improvement in every part of the country, but it does help.
Hopefully this helps. I'm available on Discord as well if you prefer that; you can find me by joining the community server. The Discord is also a great place to meet other quality editors who have been part of encouraging me to improve my work, too. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 03:11, 4 August 2022 (UTC)
  • @HangingCurve: Much better on CKMI. I also think you might want to see MOS:LOGICAL for info on the use of logical quotes. There's also a place where you added an extra comma to a sentence that didn't need it, but that trips people up at GA (and I'm thinking of writing a little essay to explain it). Need help to find a fine DYK

Hey Sammie. hope you doing well. Can you read Ahmad Abd al-Ghafur Attar to find a fine DYK. Personally i admire his being good with female relatives in a patriarchal society (his granddaughters stated that). But his prison time has some stories, but i can't change it to a well-written DYK, don't wanna waste a nomination. With Regards. Ruwaym (talk) 23:25, 1 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi Ruwaym, sorry for being a bit slow to respond. I can't find that hook here, though. The imprisonment could work, too.
By the way, you should read Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Titles of works; I suspect you're not familiar with when to use italics and when not to for work titles in English. There's also a paragraph needing an ending citation (on street naming). Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 01:28, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
Hey agian. Thanks for the help, I hope to get skills and these articles become good examples, so that I can contribute here even after the competition, Wikipedia:Kateb Maktub. I have to read MoS carefully. But how about Non-English list of works? I mean Ahmad Abd al-Ghafur Attar#Works. About streets named after, I have no source, just google search results. --Ruwaym (talk) 14:40, 5 August 2022 (UTC)

FAC image and source reviews

Hi -- I saw you did an image review (and asked for feedback; it looks perfect to me), and I thought if you're planning to do image reviews you might like to know that at the top of WT:FAC there's a list kept of which FACs currently need image and/or source reviews. Once one is done you can cross it off that list, or just delete it; FrB.TG already did it, here, for your review, so it's not obligatory to update it; others will if you don't. But that page might be a useful reference for you if you want to find other FACS needing image reviews. That list only includes FACs getting close to promotion, for which the lack of those reviews may be an obstacle to promotion, but you can also skim the top of WP:FAC for newer nominations that don't have image reviews either. Seasons in magazine issue dates

Thanks for the review and the GA pass. I hadn't seen that line in MOS:SEASON, and I think you're right that it indicates the season should have a lower case initial letter, so your edit was fair. However, I think the MoS is wrong in this case, and wanted to let you know I'll post a note on the talk page there suggesting an edit to exempt magazine issue dates in some circumstances, in case you want to join that conversation. You just made my day. DYK runs at two speeds, and at slow speed, it can take a bit for my articles to show up. It looks like one more DYK will run this month and then one on September 1. In addition, six more stations are in the hopper for DYK. Plus, I have a massive pipeline of Good Articles to nominate, get promoted, and then propose for DYK. By your IP, you might even enjoy learning that one of them is KXTV! Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 19:52, 21 August 2022 (UTC)

In case you're interested...

Thanks for reviewing my DYK for the Schiller Woods pump. I see you have a definite interest in radio and broadcasting - so you're the one who makes all those station articles I always see at DYK and GA review! In any case, it occurred to me that you might be interested in helping out with the 30 kB drive going on at WikiProject VA, particularly the article on broadcasting. We're trying to get all vital articles to a decent size, and broadcasting hasn't been worked on by anyone yet. It's pretty close - already 24,000 bytes! Thought I'd mention it just in case you're interested. Happy editing! —Ganesha811 (talk) 13:16, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup 2022 September newsletter

The fourth round of the WikiCup has now finished. 383 points were required to reach the final, and the new round has got off to a flying start with all finalists already scoring. In round 4, Bloom6132 with 939 points was the highest points-scorer, with a combination of DYKs and In the news items, followed by BennyOnTheLoose, Sammi Brie and Lee Vilenski. The points of all contestants are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

At this stage, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For the remaining competitors, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them, and importantly, before the deadline on October 31st!

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. The judges are Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth.
