[edit]From 蛇 (hebi, “snake”) + 食い (kui, stem of 食う (kuu, “to eat”)) + 鷲 (washi, “eagle”). Compare Chinese 蛇鷲 / 蛇鹫 (literally “snake eagle”), Korean 뱀잡이수리 (baemjabisuri, literally “snake-catcher eagle”), Vietnamese diều ăn rắn (literally “snake-eating hawk”), English serpent eagle, snake eagle.
