For the first time, bucchero vases are the subject of a complete study. The bucchero black vases form an exceptional documentation which is extremely large and varied, indicating the initial phases of western iconography and writing which testifies to the cultural exchanges with the Greeks and Phoenicians. This publication allows an initiation to this world of shapes, and geometric or figurative decoration. The readers will find an exhaustive view of the diverse aspects of this national ceramic material of the Etruscans which includes exceptional pieces as well as more common standardized ware. This text gives elements indispensable for an understanding of the origins of bucchero as well as its evolution and diffusion. The only coastal site with continuity from the Middle Bronze Age to the Etruscan and Roman times is La Castellina, south of Civitavecchia. Recent researches by the CNRS from Paris, and the University of Zaragoza, in close cooperation with the University of Tübingen and other European institutions, has been developed here. Pottery vases and coinage imported from Greece and the Greek western colonies, from Carthage, Sardinia and the Iberian Peninsula have been documented. Moreover, a centre of recovery and smelting of bronze objects related to the production and distribution of aes rude was discovered. It was originally located at the summit of the hill, during the 8th to the 7th centuries BC, and subsequently relocated to occupy the slopes. The principal traces of this metallurgic and early premonetal activity are cut ingots, fragments and drops of melted bronze, as well as possible weighing instruments. The surroundings of La Castellina revealed a dozen bronze deposits which contained: broken artefacts of the Iron Age and possibly the end of the Bronze Age, several thousands of aes rude and cut ingots and finally the so called tesoretto di Santa Marinella.

The statistical study and case-by-case examination (review) of the ceramics of this Etruscan oppidum, which was occasionally occupied during Roman and Medieval eras, has constituted an ongoing epistemological central theme of international research during the past 15 years. In our paper, we present the essential functions that articulate the field work, the data-base, the study of discoveries in their context, which, after several preliminary publications, have been finalized in a joint publication (Roma, l’Erma di Bretschneider, 2010). The dossier of black-glazed pottery has been selected here as symbolic of this work, since they are situated in a crucial period of the site and have to do with the cognitive and documentary bases of pottery from the Archaic period, as well as of those from the Roman era.
The working methodology applied to black-glaze ceramics has permitted an analysis of approximately 2,000 fragments. The most significant pieces selected for the publication have been analyzed individually to identify their peculiarities, and the groups of local or regional workshops that produced them (the “Small Stamp Workshop” and its imitators, others located in neighbouring cities of Pyrgi, Caere or Tarquinia, etc…). The different vessels have also been classified by groups of services, according to their use. The data derived from this study ought to link to the group of tableware in use during the various chronological periods of La Castellina.
