This article discusses the cognitive influence of cataloging tools in the stamp seals research project carried out between 1981–2013 at the Department of Biblical Studies of the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. As visual knowledge tools, the roughly twelve thousand index cards used by the Fribourg school helped to analyze, translate, and deconstruct visual artifacts into historical/archaeological data in the form of textual descriptions. In terms of media theory, the process entailed the translation of structural (nonlinear to linear), cognitive (synthetic to consecutive), and syntactical (dense to nondense) features. The semiotic analysis of the cards seen against the group’s socio-academic context shows that the cards were not only central methodologically but supported the group’s conceptual and methodological transition with direct outcomes in their historiography. The case study thus addresses an important issue in and for digital humanities, namely the conceptual role of knowledge tools in scholarship interpreting the past.

From social-material lenses, it addresses the foundation and development of the perspective, often construed as the explanation of the Bible with contemporary pictorial material. Starting with Othmar Keel and the Fribourg Circle's works and reaching scholars from other academic environments, such as South Africa, Germany, the United States, and Brazil, the paper describes the transformation of the perspective from research interest to research circle and its formalization as a subspecialization within Biblical Studies. The outlook highlights commonalities and particularities of the perspective and its enabling factors and comments on its characterization and definition.

Ultimately, the article presents a taxonomy of historical sources to tentatively propose an antidisciplinary framework to fuel innovation by focusing on the research object.

The opinion was based on the difficulty of overcoming the multiple ideologies and textual layers of the late biblical texts that portray the region at the time. The present paper, from the conceptual framework called "Magical-Mythical Networks," tries to take up the challenge by integrating the data from local visual culture to the previous textual and archaeological studies in the analysis of Benjamin's Plateau in the Iron Age I-IIA. In using the social organization and the data from multiple sources, it is proposed two levels of deities that may have been part of the religious experience of the inhabitants, such as the possible identification of them.

While in the early works of the emerging “Fribourg School” the pictorial evidence of the southern Levant as well as of the great cultures on the Nile, Euphrates, and Tigris, which alternately dominated this region, were initially used as illustrations of biblical texts, their value as a historical source was gradually recognized and established, thus creating an independent field of research within Old Testament scholarship. The INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL is a great opportunity to combine theoretical insights of iconography with practical experience in image analysis and to meet students and lecturers from different academic contexts.

This research investigates the religious practices in the region around Benjamin’s plateau, current Israel/Palestine, in the Iron Age I-IIA (c. 1125-875), place and time of the probable origin of “Ancient Israel.” It sustain two hypotheses, respectively of empiric and theoretical dimensions: (1) that Benjamin’s plateau in the Iron Age I-II have seen and an identifiable religious-symbolical system; (2) that this religious system can be visualized from the (original) concept of Magical-Mythical Networks. Regarding the theoretical objectives, it was conducted a bibliographical research in the seminal works of the History of Ancient Israelite Religion and, from its critical evaluation, it was suggested that Benjamin’s religion can be seen from the concept of “Magical-Mythical Networks”, i.e., religious-symbolic systems expressed in shared oral communication (e.g., myths, stories, legends) and materialized in objects (e.g., pottery, seals, talismans, figurines) in circular communication structures centered on ranked villages, whose peculiarities creates and were created due to the contact with the environment and social dynamics. In addition, in response to the empirical hypothesis, nine archaeological sites excavated in the region were analyzed in the region (Beitin; Tell el-Jîb; Et-Tell; Khirbet Abū-Musarraḥ; Khirbet ed- Dawwara; Khirbet Nisieh; Khirbet Raddana; Tell el-Fûl; Tell en-Nasḅeh), from which material, visual, and textual cultures were researched. From the proposed methodology, it was possible to probe the existence of a Benjaminite religious- symbolical system that could be described in practices and beliefs. The practices were distributed in two levels; (1) familiar (i.e., related to the house and family), in residential and funerary architectural compounds, and with practices linked to preoccupations within the domestic environment; (2) village level (i.e., related to the village and collective), in village sanctuaries and open-air cults, and with practices connected to preoccupations of the village, as food production. Regarding the beliefs, three central concepts emerge transversally in the record, and that were considered central to the socio-religious imagination of the Benjaminites: (1) the idea of extended family; (2) beliefs in the after-life; (3) violence and war.
