ABSTRACT: Variational linguistics offers a diversity of tools for the analysis of French. In the sub-discipline of historical lexicology, analysing regional variation in the French-speaking world with the comparative approach allows identifying how its usages evolve over the time and how they move from one dialect to the other. Traditionnally, this approach is largely based on metalinguistic data. At the same time, corpora are more and more considered as mandatory to describe real usage. Do they exempt from working with metalinguistic data in comparative historical lexicology? Considering this methodological question, this article presents a case study of a polysemic modern French adjective, prime. A detailed analysis of its semantic, syntagmatic, dialectal and diachronic features will allow for identifying their evolution and their regional distribution in French whilst examining how textual and metalinguistic tools contribute to the analysis of such a polysemic unit.

The paper offers an overview on the main corpora that are, or could be used for the lexical study of diatopicisms in contemporary French in the northern part of the francophone world, whether it be traditional, mostly literary corpora, journalistic texts, recent web corpora, or 'oral' corpora. The author examines their suitability for identifying diatopicisms with their spatial distribution in a francophone perspective, presents current methods of text analysis, and points out various problems related in particular to text location, regional annotation, discourse genres and treated subjects, but also to formal compatibility, text size and practical access. The article therewith underlines the need, in a close future, of comparable data for the different varieties in the francophone world in order to enhance the description of diatopic variation in modern French.

The methods that have been developed for their analysis are as old as they are numerous. Yet the concrete tools with which linguists go into the field are rarely made available to the research community. This document aims at filling this gap. It presents the materials that are being used by a team of field researchers within the ‘Third Way’ Project on ‘Prepositional Adverbials from Latin to Romance' (dir. Martin Hummel), funded by the Austrian Science Fund: a guide, which presents the protocol for the standardised part of the interview, based on the example of French (Quebec), a questionnaire template, based on the example of Italian, as well as a series of worksheets, based on the example of Spanish (Mexico).
