This two year prospective study was performed to determine the clinical signs and haemato-biochemical alterations in eleven buffaloes suffering from caecal dilatation, in hospital admitted population of 357 buffaloes which were confirmed to have gastrointestinal dysfunction. Ten clinically healthy buffaloes were considered as control. The diagnosis of caecal dilatation was made on the basis of physical examination, after ruling out other gastrointestinal disorders. Complete anorexia, colic, constipated faeces, reduced to nil rumen motility, mild to moderate dehydration, distension of right flank and ping sounds on simultaneous auscultation and percussion of right paralumbar fossa were the most pronounced clinical symptoms. Affected buffaloes had significantly higher neutrophil count and lower lymphocytic count than control group. Biochemical analysis showed significant increase of total bilirubin, AST, globulin, lactate and blood urea nitrogen levels and significant reduction in cal...

This article describes the clinical findings, haemato-biochemical alterations, and conservative treatment of a buffalo suffering from caecal dilatation. The clinical findings were anorexia, scanty faces, reduced rumen motility, distension of right flank, ping sounds on auscultation and percussion of right flank and dilated caecum at pelvic brim on per-rectal examination. The hemato-biochemical alterations were neutrophilic leukocytosis, increased AST, BUN and lactate, and low calcium levels. Conservative treatment resulted in uneventfully after a period of five days.

Rumen impaction in buffaloes is commonly associated with ingestion of fibrous feed material, coarse grain, polythene and jute bags and ropes. The present paper describes the clinical findings haematological alteration in an outbreak of acute rumen impaction in Murrah buffaloes of Punjab associated with feeding of mature bajra (Pennisetum typhoideum). The prominent clinical signs were sudden anorexia and loss of defecation, abdominal pain, dehydration, abdominal distension and tympany. Hematological alterations were neutrophelia and reversal of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio. All the animals recovered uneventfully within a period of three days after aggressive fluid therapy, oral purgative and lubricant and electrolyte therapy, and other supportive care.
