Şakir Dinçşahin
I am a Professor of Political Science and International Relations at Istanbul Gedik University. My academic path has been paved by engaging experiences at Yeditepe University's Department of Political Science in Istanbul, where I served from 2002 to 2016, and at Hasan Kalyoncu University in Gaziantep until 2021.
I completed my doctoral studies under the supervision of Professor Feroz Ahmad, delving into the rich canvas of Turkish political thought. The findings, which I later refined for publication as State and Intellectuals in Turkey: The Life and Times of Niyazi Berkes by Rowman & Lexington in 2015, were a humble contribution to understanding the dynamic interplay between the state and intellectuals in Turkey.
My academic background includes a master's degree in International Economics from Yeditepe University, which I earned in 2004, and a bachelor's degree in Political Science from Boğaziçi University, obtained in 2000.
I've explored themes such as populism, nationalism, ethnicity, and Turkey's intellectual history through my research, and have been published in journals like Nations and Nationalism, Government and Opposition, and the History of Sport.
Outside the realm of academia, I've taken part in civil society initiatives in Turkey. As part of GEA, an international search and rescue team, I've assisted in numerous humanitarian efforts—experiences that have taught me the value of solidarity and global citizenship.
My journey has also been marked by learning opportunities such as the Marshall Memorial Fellowship from the German Marshall Fund of the United States and enriching exchanges as a visiting scholar at SOAS, University of London, and at Temple University—a scholarship supported by the US State Department. These encounters have expanded my horizons and have reminded me of the collective pursuit of knowledge.
I strive to impart the principles of cooperation, understanding, and lifelong learning to my students and all those with whom I collaborate.
