T... more The act of watering a garden greatly increases domestic water consumption in residential areas. This issue has caused local governments and managers to become concerned over how homeowners shape and maintain their gardens. This subject is critical along the Mediterranean coast, where residential urban sprawl has expanded over the last few decades and water resources are scarce. Suburban residents from the Girona region of Catalonia, Spain were surveyed to determine the main landscaping typologies used on suburban properties. Four garden typologies were identified and characterised: ornamental, vegetable, lawn and tree. Furthermore, a multinomial logistic regression analysis revealed how each landscaping pattern is associated with particular sociodemographic characteristics of the households (e.g., age, size, unemployment, length of residency). Management guidelines for water users, real estate companies and local governments are provided in the conclusions, focused on raising awareness and cooperation.

This paper is based on information obtained from 230 surveyed residents in 9 municipalities of Girona (northeast Catalonia, Spain). First, we seek to define the socio-demographic profiles of the various population groups according to their members' birthplace. Subsequently, based on the existing literature, we analyze the relationships between social groups, their socio-demographic characteristics and their attitudes and behaviors regarding residential water use. Finally, after applying a Generalized Linear Mixed Model with panel data from 77 respondents, we examine whether the birthplace of the surveyed residents and their attitudes toward the conservation of water in homes are relevant factors in determining domestic water consumption. The results demonstrate the significance of birthplace (with its related socio-demographic and urban dynamics) and water conservation attitudes on residential water use and, therefore, the need to take these factors into account when managing this resource.

Based on a study of suburban residents from the Girona region of Spain, this article seeks to determine whether such variables are associated with pro-environmental water-conservation attitudes and behaviours. Results show no significant or consistent relationships between these predictors and a suite of attitudinal and behavioural variables, suggesting that the characteristics and descriptors of place attachment and pro-environmental behaviour may need further discrimination if relationships between the two are to be used to inform policy and intervention.

A mapping and statistical approach (cluster analysis) was applied to the information obtained from 568 questionnaires answered by the shops and the workshops located in the flood risk area. The results obtained allowed the authors to determine five different flood vulnerability profiles of the commercial establishments analysed. These profiles paint a picture of little individual adaptation to the risk and the possibility of suffering, sooner or later, large economic losses due to overflowing of the Onyar River. The authors established a methodology for carrying out a detailed multidimensional analysis of the flood vulnerability of the city's commercial establishments in order to provide the foundations for local government policies and for strategies for shop owners to reduce flood vulnerability.

Perception is then related to vulnerability, flood management, and citizen's preferences regarding alternatives to curb flood losses in the future. The study concludes that flood awareness and the willingness to take actions regarding this hazard are clearly related to the degree of social involvement with the affairs of the local community. Furthermore, participatory settings such as Focus Group sessions appear to enable a better environment for assessing and implementing flood management options that attempt to modify human activities rather than modify natural processes as has been frequently the case in the past.
