Instead the context of OT settings in Byzantine art shows a different relation between OT and NT. It is caracterized by a continuum which makes the OT tradition a very important part that is not surpassed by the NT. Furthermore OT and NT are part of a history that has its telos in the future. This thesis and its implications for Byzantine art is laid out in this paper and has to be validated by further research.

At the same time, it becomes obvious that this hierarchization is not as important for the faithful as the theosis, i.e. the direct contact between God and men through the Eucharist.

Most of them are to be found in the Old Testament and were illustrated in Early Christian and Byzantine art. Judging by these monuments, there is a difference between the Byzantine and the Western iconography. Whereas the artists in the West obviously had no qualms about depicting God as three persons, the Byzantines found other solutions to avoid the portrayal of God the Father, while showing that the God of the Old Testament is the Triune God of the Christians.

But what is more important as place of heaven is the bema, the sanctuarium. All relevant sources show that here at the point where the altar stands the real heaven is to be found.
