Crowdsourcing with the help of mobile phones can replace linguistic fieldwork
successfully in ce... more Crowdsourcing with the help of mobile phones can replace linguistic fieldwork successfully in certain cases. In the field of migration linguistics, the GPS function is particularly worthwhile because the mobility of the speakers can be tracked automatically without their intervention. Then, the geographic data thereby collected can be enriched with sociolinguistic information entered by the users themselves. Especially within the Francoprovençal area, where nowadays the use of French and Italian is widespread, the traditional graphical representation of the Sprachraum is obsolete. Rather, it can be imagined as perforated and superimposed by the national languages. The objective of the proposed smartphone application is to actualise the representation of the Francoprovençal area by considering the multilingualism and the mobility of the speakers. The app users create a profile in which they indicate general linguistic and biographical data. Then, over the course of a week, the participants register the varieties they use in the encountered situations, which the app combines with their actual geolocation. A synoptic map illustrates the results of the collected data, i.e., the places, hours and situations in which Francoprovençal was spoken. In practice, the app also facilitates contacting other Francoprovençal speakers who authorised the visualisation of their actual location on a map. The objective of the smartphone application is thus threefold: in addition to new insights into the geographic and situational use of Francoprovençal, the app enables speakers to become aware of their language choices and, on a larger scale, fosters the use of the minority language.

This paper presents the preliminary considerations for the development of a smartphone application that displays language and variety choices of multilingual speakers in the Francoprovençal area, based on their geographic mobility. One part of the app gathers sociolinguistic and biographic data about the participants by means of a questionnaire. It also tracks their mobility behaviour during a week and asks the users to register the varieties they use. The other part of the mobile app provides a map to access geographic information about the collected data. As well, it offers users the option to get in touch in the real world with other Francoprovençal speakers. The objective of this crowdsourcing project is to gain new insights in the field of migration linguistics at the intersection between diachrony and synchrony at a micro- and meso-social level. A second objective of the project is to foster the use of Francoprovençal. By evaluating and illustrating the participants’ individual geographic and linguistic behaviour, they become aware of their own variety choices. The summary map of the collected data related to the use of Francoprovençal varieties can also encourage users to talk to unknown people in the minority language. A critical literary review of similar web and mobile applications for linguistic research serves to identify the crucial considerations for the conceptualization of a new linguistic app. Conclusions can be drawn about programming possibilities, user incentives, data management and privacy. These findings subsequently can be adapted to the present project.

There are between 49 and 145 lemmata beginning with this stem in commonly used dictionaries for Portuguese, Spanish, Catalan, French, Italian and Romanian. The analysis and comparison of six sub-corpora illustrates the similarities that the port*- lexemes exhibit in each of these languages. Language contact is a crucial factor here, as there are many loan translations from French among the port*- compounds, while in French almost all lexemes of this structure are indigenous word formations. Given that information on the first usage and etymology is not equally available for all of the investigated languages, lexical, semantic and morphological criteria are needed in order to evaluate the extent to which the French language has influenced port*-noun compounds in other Romance languages. The units of analysis are ranked and classified according to their properties to show whether they are more likely to have been adopted from French or formed of pre-existing elements in the language. Lexemes of the six Romance languages, which refer to the same concept or which are composed of equivalent morphosemantic constituent parts, are correlated to assess the dimension of pan-Romance parallel developments of terms with port*-. The results of this analysis demonstrate that language-specific frequencies of this formation component are related to the nature of the verbal element. This depends on whether the component is an indigenous, latinate or loan component in the language in question, as well as on the number of formations based on the model of a French compound. In total, the corpus includes 122 port*- series of formations in two or more of the languages with morphosemantic similarities to varying degrees. This suggests that the Romance languages tend to use the same word formation pattern and even the same component to create a neologism denominating the same referent. However, the considerable amount of language specific port*- formations without similarities in other Romance languages indicates that the composition with this particular verbal element is productive and evolved independently in each language, albeit with different intensity.

The area was governed by the same authorities for several centuries. For about only one and a half centuries though, borders divide the domain into a French, a Swiss and an Italian part today. Thus, a common Francoprovençal language policy turns out to be difficult. However, the present local population still sustains the idea of being a transborder community due to its similar cultural, socio-economic and ecological circumstances. Despite being separated by high mountains, the speakers have always stayed in close contact to each other. The reasons for mobility and linguistic competences have changed over time. Nevertheless, relations among the local population never declined in intensity. This article gives an overview of the types of internal mobility and the contact situations within the Francoprovençal domain from the 9th to the 21st century.

Along with the enhancement of the discipline, the question arose how passers-by perceive the linguistic landscape (LL) and to what extent the signs impact on their language behaviour. This study pursues an interdisciplinary approach and adopts the methodological principles used within perceptual psychology to explore the pedestrians’ reactions on the LL. By means of experiments and interviews conducted in the multilingual town Aosta in Italy, the level of attention paid to the signs and the manner of verbalising their content was analysed. The results of the pilot study prove that the psychological method is fruitful for unveiling the laypersons’ degree of consciousness and for explaining their responses to the LL.

While in French almost all porte- compounds are indigenous word formations, there are many borrowings from French among the Italian lexemes of this structure. Furthermore, French porte- compounds emerged earlier and more numerously than the Italian ones. It seems therefore to be likely that the emergence of indigenous Italian porta + noun compounds was catalyzed by means of language contact. By comparing the Italian and French corpus according to etymologic and morphosemantic criteria, Italian lexemes can be classified into three categories: as results from language contact with French, as coincidental parallel developments where language contact is unproven but not improbable, or as language-specific word formations. Their chronological distribution shows at which time and to what extent French model words had an impact on the emergence of Italian porta- compounds.
